    I worked at Circuit City in the Bay Area during the early to mid 90’s. We had athletes from the A’s, Giants, Raiders, the Olympics, and local College athletes come in all the time. Jose Canseco, Mark Maguire, Brian Boitano, Matt Biondi, etc. One weekend there’s a little bit of a commotion. Turns out Michael Jordan was in the store. He had come in to buy a portable CD player & a set of powered speakers because he was playing golf at one of the local clubs with one of the Warriors players(I forget his name), & they wanted some tunes. So my friend ends up selling him the portable CD player & I sold him the speakers & checked him out. Super nice guy. He paid cash & pulled out this wad of money so thick he had to use a rubber band instead of a money clip. I’m sure it was probably for betting on the golf game. I was super nervous helping him, and I just realized I may have forgotten to sell him batteries to make the speakers work in the golf cart 😳. Somewhere I still have the sales receipt with his signature on it.

I’ve been bitching for almost 17yrs to ask them to get my stuff down. Hasn’t worked yet. Hopefully this summer. There’s A LOT up there, so we can only do it in the summer when we can move the cars out & empty the boxes into the garage.

      In the U.S sure, but he didn’t have that level of fame outside of the U.S.
      I’m not gonna be one of those contrary people that pretend I’d never heard of him or anything - his name was known for sure - but we’d didn’t know much more other than he was a huge star in the states (and American soft power was very strong in the 90’s……we did hear of some sports stars, though only basketball really).
      So for Europeans (and people elsewhere), it might be hard to comprehend how big of a star he was/is in the U.S, as it might he equally hard for Americans to comprehend how little fame he has elsewhere in the world.

      @@westington1, thats fair and understandable for anyone thats been outside of the U.S.

    • @westington1
      @westington1 4 месяца назад

      @@dlphil24 Yeah for sure, and there’s people that exaggerate his lack name-recognition just to be contrary.
      I do think that there’s a lot of people that find it frustrating that there are so many Americans that can’t seem to handle that American sports aren’t really followed outside of the U.S.
      Not only that, but that football’s popularity around the globe absolutely dwarf’s that of, well all the Americans sports put together by a clear distance, and probably all the other sports in the world added to that.
      I do think it’s hard to really grasp the scale of the love and following football has around the world, if you were raised in the U.S, though it is maddening that some Americans see stuff like viewing figures etc, yet still try and argue their sport-stars are more famous (or greater etc).
      When people put M.J up against Messi, or Ronaldo, Maradona, Pele, Zidane, Beckenbaur, Cruyff, Maldini, G.Best etc etc etc (you get the picture, and I’m just listing some of the top 20 all time greats there - there’s 1000’s and 1000’s of stars of each generation), it’s a little ridiculous and kinda insulting as footballers compete in a game with 1000’s of leagues worldwide, and I mean professional leagues. MJ is an undeniable great, and that combined with the marketing and advertising industry all combined to make him a huge star in the 90’s, but it didn’t penetrate outside the states in the way you might think, and I personally think it’s ridiculous to compare a player who played a game where there were less than 1000 professional players in it, and a game with only one league of any note, against football where there are 11 professional leagues in England alone (and I do mean England, not the British isles . There is a Scottish league pyramid as there is an Irish one too).
      So, and sorry if this seems like a rant, but there are sports around the world that dwarf American sports in terms of popularity - and football’s popularity is more than that of all the rest of the worlds sports combined, by about 75% ……! So you see the problem with comparing MJ to any footballer of recognition?

      Met Sanders twice and it is a crazy story that no one will believe because the odds of it happening are so low, but here you go. First time was in LA at a traffic light.
      I was driving a Ram and he was in a Bentley. I said "hi Mr Sanders. Congratulations on your success. I always enjoyed watching you play". To which he looked at me, mumbled "whatever" and rolled his eyes. Fast forward to 15 years later I am at a traffic light again in LA. By this time I had become what I believe to be a successful person and am in my Gallardo Spyder with the top down and he was in an F430. I was hesitant to say anything remembering my interaction with him previously, but did anyways. I said "hi Mr Sanders. I enjoyed watching you play, thank you for helping SF win the super bowl in 94" and he replied "yes sir! I loved that team! Wanna race!?" And smiled. (We were in moderate traffic with no shot of getting on it) to which I just smiled and gave him a thumbs up. I like to believe the first interaction was just him having a bad day and not because he felt like I was beneath him judging me by the vehicle I was in at the time vs the second interaction when I was driving some of what he perceived as an equal to his car. I have read that he was always the best teammate in the locker room and good with fans. So in my mind he was just having a bad day, which everybody has, except normal people like us don't create lifelong memories for complete strangers. Okay that's my long winded story 😂

      What myth did MJ create? Elaborate please.

    • @blackgeekfandom
      @blackgeekfandom 4 месяца назад +2

      @katrinagwen The Last Dance was a MJ propaganda piece. The comment isn't a 100% indictment of MJ, but hero worshipping.
      In aspects of Black America, people talk about black love, yet MJ was a serial cheater. He was a terrible team owner. People have stated he's a terrible tipper and is crass with fans. When Scottie held out for his bad MJ, he had a problem with it. Would it have been nice if "The Last Dance" interviewer would have asked, "Hey, what about helping Scottie" with Nike. I can't really get him on that because Scottie is a grown man, but MJ can not do any wrong because of the Nike, Gatorade, ESPN, McDonald's the NBA and society created.
      He is the athlete zero of never meeting your role models. Arguably the greatest NBA player and top 5 athletes of all time in organized sports, but the epitome of hero worshipping.

    • @katrinagwen
      @katrinagwen 4 месяца назад

      @@blackgeekfandom Thanks for your explanation. I understand and concur with your perspective, and I believe MJ would as well. This could explain his discomfort with the relentless attention he receives, particularly in recent times, with the exception of the documentary that has been in the works since the 90s. While some people might view him as a hero, others simply admire MJ’s approach to the game and his mindset.

    Tbh I have also thought about this and I also wouldn’t want to meet MJ, I’m afraid it would be the case of “never meet you heroes”
    He’s such a motivational and inspirational person to me that I had a bad experience meeting MJ it would destroy me

    Actually, that's not as crazy as it sounds. All too often, you're disappointed when you find out the truth about your "heroes".

    If i ever met Jordan, i would just say whats up and keep it moving. A lot of athletes dont want to be bothered. If you catch em on a good day, it might be ok!
