Your videos are great so thank you so much for doing them, just purchased a Suffolk Punch 17sk for £300 with scarifier and it is the first time using cylinder mowers. It has needed work like the carburetor clean and pulley change. Just wondering does my mower have the pinion upgrade or is it only ATCO mowers. I also have a question on the petrol to use, would you recommend using E5 petrol over E10 ?
Hi.. use E5 NOT E10. Or the best fuel is aspen 4. It's expensive but last for 5 years .. unopened and two years opened.. yes you can use the same Atco upgrade for your mower ..
Just followed this for my Attco Balmoral 20S - Changed the pinion gear, the belts and the ring gear. Step by step instructions are amazing. The roller is a little tricky to get the screws back in especially doing it on your own but follwed it and works a treat. Thank you so much Mick.
@@jasonbocchi7736 no worries mate .... Glad it helped
I've just replaced the pinion and gear but now I can't push the mower it moves when pulling leaver but can't manually push it now?
Have you put the new Pinion gear plate on as well?
I'm fascinated with the machinery you Gents have on the other side of the pond. Thanks for the video Sir Mick!
They cut very well I use a bigger one on my lawn..
I was thinking the same thing! That thing looks like it will outlive us all it's made so well.
Hi Mick. Quick question have you ever come across the pinion bolt for the drive pulley that keeps working itself loose and stoping the drive. Then you tighten it back up and it works then next time you use it same thing?
Use some lock tight.. maybe that will sort it
@@themowerman that was my thought. Thanks
What was the part called or what was the number of it Mick please?

How's she goin'? Nice repair Mick!!! The upgrade sure took care of the grinding problem. Nice unit now. Thanks for sharing. Take care!!!
Hello Mike, Great videos, Can i ask have you ever sharpened a suffolk punch 14s . have you any videos on that model. I think it dont have the 24mm socket wheel and only has a small fixture that you cant attach a drill on. and its a left handed any ideas how to back lap this model. Thanks Vic
Hi I have a atco balmoral 17s. Have a drive issue. Replaced ring and pinion gear. Roller spins when not on the floor but rainy drive the mower when it on the ground. Any idea on the cause? Thanks.
Sounds like a belt or cable needs adjusting..
Great video as usual. Almost rebuilt mine after watching your videos. One video I can't find is about the pull cord kickback issue. Which I have. Any idea how to fix it? Thanks.
Could be out of timing.. check the flywheel key for alignment or it could be the valve
O was just commenting that the eqpt seems to be very different than what we are accustomed to in the US 🇺🇸 ,the good thing about is there is a lot more parts to play with!
Once again, cool looking mower. It's great when someone does the math and comes up with a fix to a reoccurring problem, makes life much easier. Great fix. Stevo
Interesting watch Mick,,, looked easy too
Mick, great video. I’ve new around here a bit of a novice sadly.
I was recently given a qualcast classic 43s and have the same noise when pulling the mower back and when it engages with the throttle.
Would these same parts work on my motor or could you be so kind to point me in the right direction please.
Keep up the great videos
I would say it would fix it mate ...
Hi Mick, love the channel. I have a Qualcast 43s, bought it from a charity shop but it has issues, my biggest concern is the drive train. I'm struggling to set it up. Finding the sweet spot where it just idles and does not move and why when I pull back does the back roller lock? Any help or a video on the subject much appreciated.
Hi mate .. I have lots of videos on upgrades and how to get it sorted.. have a look in my cylinder mower playlist..
I have an Atco Royale b24 making a similar noise when pushed forwards. Works ok other than this. Is it a bearing wear issue like this?
Could me mate
I have a Suffolk punch 14sk and it wont pull backwards thinking it might have the same problem
Yeah probably mate
Hay, mine had this already on my mower however still crunches etc all of a sudden? Assume this can fail over time. Would you suggest replacing? Not very expensive so guess it’s worth a try right?
Yes mate ... you got it
Thanks for doing these really good educational videos my suffolk punch 17sk has been sitting around in the shed for a few years now and you have inspired me to get it out and fixed up replaced the front roller only to find its not quite rolling right the drive pully is wobbly so using this video I'll strip it down tomorrow and check both the pinion gear and housing thanks again
No worries
Hi I run a mowing service which has been running for 50yrs, can tell your subscribers to stop ringing me as our company name is mick's mowing service cheers
Lol oops everyone stop ringing this fella lol
Mick Thanks for a great video I have a Suffolk Punk sk14 It cut ok and can be pushed forward when the engine is running and dive does engage. When the engine is of can only pull back, push forward and yes the crunch. The machine in the video looks as if it's the same. Would it be the same for me to do as you have done on my suffolk.
Thanks for a great set of videos.

Hi mate .. yes exactly the same

thanks for that fix sir mick great job
Another top class video, did as you suggested and it’s fixed the problem. Brilliant thank you.
Your welcome mate .. glad it fixed your problem
That was a very slick video production, you handled that fix with confidence..
Thanks Ian.. that means a lot for a man with some vintage behind him
Super fine job Mick thanks for the tip 👍👍👍👍
Good one Mick - hope it sold well :-)
That's great to know there's an upgrade for that problem. Thanks for the info Mick. Fantastic vid
Your welcome mate
Great video but I can’t remove the drive pulley from its spindle, any suggestions Terry
It will come off.. a lot of wiggling..
Good fix mick have just ordered the upgrade and gear thanks for the tip mick 👍
Good luck mate
Are cylinder mowers still sold new over there?
Yeah mate .. big Money too
where are the part numbers you talked about, cannot see them anywhere, please help ?
What part are you after
Sold! Nice mower there Sir Mick. Repair looked pretty straight forward and your description made it look easy! 🇬🇧🇺🇸 Roger
Thanks mate
Good video!!!
Mick, are you familiar with alkylate petrol? Have you ever used it?
No mate
Nice tutorial Mick and after being let down with a delivery date on my workshop i managed to get a full refund. The good news is i managed to get another which is being delivered the end of this month 😀.
Fantastic mate
Never seen that model of mower Mick ! Thanks for showing it , looks pretty complex .
Oh quite simple in design.. but lots to go wrong when the parts get old..
Nice fix . On for the memory bank.
ta mate
very nice repair.

Yeah I fitted both parts
New belt?
It's had a recent new belt on

Hi Mick. I have the Qualcast Classic 35s petrol mower. Had it for a few years identical gearing as the one you worked on. I have never encountered this before but I know what to do if I do. Thanks.
PS are you going to tell where you got that yellow tray you used when cleaning that carb?. Pretty please. Thanks.
Here you go mate www.versi-tray.com/
Thank you Mick. 👍
Got my Versi tray in the post today👍👏
Great fix mick
Get in there 👍
Hey up mate, hope all is well!? Literally on one of these machines with the same issue as I type!! Watching your video now with interest on this new part! 👌
Fantastic it does the job.. I have done 4 now.
From all the ones stripped, I’ve noticed the more modern made ones, defo post 2000, probably around 2004 seem to come with those elongated bearings, much better. I’m currently on a 1996 balmoral 17s and it has various design changes to the internals and the same bearing you removed from your 14. Good fix though mate, cheap to! 👍🏻
interesting video on the upgrade. The problem i have on my Balmoral 17s, is that i dont have the nut below the bearing and drive gear. Seems to be flush!!
Email me a photo mate .. what's the problem micksmowers01@gmail.com
@@themowerman what i did after looking at your video, was to replace the single 3 point bearing with the full size upgraded bearing carrier. The bottom hole that holds the threaded shaft isn't there. Its flush. The pushing forward is not exactly a hindrance, but i suspect the drive belt tension needs to be reduced further, or maybe have a look at both the main bearings that support the twin rollers.
Keep up the good video's!!
@@skodanut ok cool.. ta for y
Hey Mick, who's Julio?
Say what
@@themowerman At 3:56.
You mentioned a feller name of Julio.
I found your channel while watching Taryl Dactyl the other day and been catching your vids ever since.
You got some unique machines over there. First time I ever saw a mower like the one in this video.
Will this upgrade part fit a Qualcast Classic 43S?...cheers.
Yes mate
@@themowerman Cheers Mick...much appreciated...
@@garytroman5657 your welcome
What part was that u used for the drive thanks
What do you mean
Nice one Mick .
Well done.
Is that just a bushing added to an aluminium casting? Do you know the inside measurement of the good bush? I could make them in bronze so that you could drill out the existing hole, and fit a new bush.
I does have a bushing but it's longer then the old one..
@@themowerman Any idea what the diameter of the shaft is and the length of the extended bushing?
@@BensWorkshop no I will try and find out
@@themowerman I am just being curious as to whether parts could be made to adapt the original rather than replace it.
@@BensWorkshop yeah a good idea
The color of your videos is so vivid now.... And great fix.
I have put some different lighting up.. I think it looks better

Hi mick awesome videos as per quick one I’ve got a Hyundai rear roller self propelled mower but the self drive is hardly moving ? I’ve covered all the basics and still no joy any ideas ?
Cable or belt adjustment. ?
@@themowerman can’t adjust the drive can only adjust the cable ? It’s baffling me the mower model is Hyundai HYM530SPER Self-Propelled Petrol Roller Lawnmower it’s not the electric start model
@@Robsenginerepairs so have you adjusted the cable
@@themowerman yeah the cable is fully adjusted

What parts do you need mate
@@themowerman the pinion gear upgrade kit
@@wmartonejr hi.. ok this is the part number.. don't know if you can get it over your side F016103210
Nice fix Mick
Thanks grandpa
Great video, Mick! I have the same issue with a Qualcast Classic 43s, which appears identical to the ATCO in your video. On the inside of the roller, is it just a ring gear around the outer circumference of the drum? My mower has a bracket like your new one, but the roller does not seem to fit snugly in the bracket. The pinion gear is in good condition, as is the ring gear, but I get a clunk when in drive, and it will not push forward. The play where the drum sits in the bracket seems to be the issue. I would appreciate your expert opinion.
Take the ring gear out and clean or replace it.. that may help mate
@@themowerman Thanks, I will try that in a few minutes. I wondered if there was a connecting gear between the outer ring to add stability and drive? It appears to be the pinion and the outer ring only.
@@daveraybould63 yes.. sometimes with the ring gear it gets full of dirt and muck.. so take your time to clean it properly.. if it's had the upgrade aluminium part then it should be fine..
@@themowerman I reassembled the roller without the plastic cover so I could rotate it by hand and check the gearing. The aluminium ring was not too dirty, but I cleaned it thoroughly and can see my pinion gear looks okay visually, but it is not engaging correctly. Is the 35s pinion the same size as the 43s? Sorry to hijack your video!
@@daveraybould63 yeah they are all the same.. take the belts off and see if it will roll without the belts..
Good fix mick well done
Ta mate
. Hope you are well
@@themowerman yep all well in shed trying to put atco back together its had a full frame strip down and painted so all getting put back together now
Hi mick - I’ve tried to undo the nut to take off the drive roller pulley , but the hole thing turns ?
Is there a small hole in the pulley?
@@themowerman yes - I’ve done the upgrade last year , but when I engage drive - nothing - tried to undo the nut , but the nut turn with the bolt as well - also put a Alan key in to stop the pulley turning -
Hey Mick, great video, thanks for making it. I’m going through most of your videos for tips now! :)
I just picked up a pre-2012 Balmoral 20S, which is a bit grindy, so I’m going to replace the pinion and do the upgrade.
I can’t find the part on Amazon, do you have a trusted alternate source for the part please? I want to make sure I get the right part.
Also, have you found any difference between the genuine ATCO/Allett pinion and the non genuine?
Thanks!

@@themowerman awesome, thank you so much! I ordered a load of bits from GHS after watching your videos, which were super helpful. Next stage, cleaning the tillotson carb after watching your video guide. Something I really wasn’t looking forward to before. 👍
@@tastyfish1032 good luck with the carb clean.. don't forget the 3in 1 tool to remove the long jet.. let me know how it goes
@@themowerman thanks! I bought a new carb just in case it all goes Pete Tong…. I was going to do it tonight, but ran into a problem with the upgraded drive pinion bearing holder. Since fitting, it seems to mount the roller pulley a few mm further out, which causes the belt to jump off when you first engage drive.
Have you ever experienced this? (It’s a pre 2012 model, I checked the model number against the part on GHS).
Thanks
Top notch video Mick, I bought the same mower and restored it thanks to your previous videos and it runs great, I've saved this job info for future reference if I need it cheers mate. 👍
