Backlapping a Cylinder Mower

- Note- We advise you to wear glasses/goggles during the back-lapping process as the paste can spit off the cylinder at times. It is also a good idea to have the cylinder at a comfortable height while you're doing this and please be careful as the blade will be sharp.
If your blade is stone damaged it is still worth giving back lapping a try- if you don't have any luck doing this you can take your cylinder to your local Allett Dealer who will do this for you using a grinder. We advise you to always take your cylinder to an Allett dealer to have it sharpened- back-lapping is meant as a temporary sharpen e.g. during a busy tournament where grounds teams don't have the time to visit dealers etc.
24mm socket for Kensington, liberty 43 and Classic petrol
The 1 and 1/8 socket *28mm) will be needed for the
CLASSIC 12E
SANDRINGHAM 14E
LIBERTY 30 and 35
We also say in the video that you need a drill with a reverse direction. That isn’t correct. The drill just needs to turn the cylinder clockwise from the cylinder drive end, which is the conventional direction for a drill.
www.pitchcare....
The smartest dressed backlapper in the history of lawnmowers. Great vid!
Haha I had to drag austin away from his desk for this 😂
I'm astounded how he didn't get lapping compound on any of his clothes. The sign of a professional I suppose! @@ALLETTMOWERSUK
By far the most concisely useful backlapping tutorial on youtube.
I totally admire this man for stooping that long and getting nothing on his clothes or shoes, well done and in great shape!
He does ultra marathons for fun 😂
Well done for an excellent tutorial and for managing to do that in your good shirt and trousers without ending up wearing the paste :)
this was like an intro from a safety video with a freak accident, imagine if you lose you balance and lean against or fall on the blades....
@@jkntrds9635 they look worse than they are. sure you wouldnt want to put your fingers in the reel while if its being powered by something, but the edges are actually squared off and not knife edged at all.
Man. I just had my first mow with the new Kensington. You guys make such bad ass lawn mowers! Hats off
Please share some of your lawn photos with us on our ALLETT socials!
Great video! Well done for staying crouched for so long...and in your Sunday best, too!
I was waiting for him to say " fcuk my wife is gonna kill me " while spending the last 7mins of this video explaining how to remove lapping paste and fine metal shavings from a nice shirt...
Thanks for this, I did exactly as you explained (I used engine valve grinding paste) and my mower now cuts perfectly.
Very helpful, I have just bought a Liberty 43 and I'm looking forward to receiving it and years of proper maintenance.
A first class video. I will certainly do this when required on my new Kensington 20B when she needs it. This is a great channel, keep them coming 👍🏼
I like the way you give your drill a “wash”, only kidding, thanks for the tutorial,
I am going to try using an angle grinder very gently.
Greetings from Australia.
I have a lovely T shirt covered in water and paste when i did this! Just a word of advice use old clothes. lol
I’m surprised you didn’t wear most of that paste, also I’m amazed at the length of time you can stay in that position!
He’s used to doing 250km runs across the desert / Antarctic so he can cope with 5 minutes of kneeling for my videos 😂😂
Tried this today and it worked a treat, thank you
Daniel Craig 007 not just in the movies hahahaha great video cheers
From what I'm seeing here, the Allett reel is much easier to backlap than a McLane reel mower. In the latter case, you have to remove a main sprocket gear and chain to allow the reel to spin freely in reverse. Also to tighten the contact areas between bed knife and reel blades for sharpening, it is much more cumbersome to adjust on a McLane reel(essentially requires loosening three 1/2in bolts on each side of reel mower mounts). Using only a large flat-blade screwdriver to do the same, Allett gets the prize for maintenance of reel blades, IMHO.
I like to use a feeler gauge to check the critical clearances between bed knife and reel blades. Just a difference between a few thousandths of a inch on either side of reel blade mounting can reduce the precision of cuts on a lawn. Truing the straight edge of an older bed knife is best left to professional services, as it has to be absolutely in a straight line with the reel blades to cut properly as designed.
He looks like Daniel Craig doing a Allett mower video in England! - Michael 007!
Grinding paste is available in different grits. How harsh does the grit level need to be?
80 or 120
That’s a very nice pair of shoes to be wearing for this task…
I stole him away from his desk to shoot this video unprepared 😂
What type of extension is attached to the drill to accommodate the 24m socket.
Hi there I have a atco windsor 12s and I'd like to Sharpen/lap my blades, how do I do it with my machine? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
This method hones the bottom blade and the rear edge of the cylinder blade, but not the cutting edge of the cylinder?
backlapping instructions for the big 24inch machine Buckingham
What grit number are you using? 80 grit? 120?
Very informative. Many thanks!
How do i know that the blade is adjusted accordingly so it hits against the plate
ha great video sir thers no grass in Kensington is there ha Daniel Craig turned to mowing after bond 😃
Good job the shirt survived!
Tis knocking lovie..where is your Allen wrench? Are you being lazy?lol i have a quick question then, love. Im so poor can i use my Comet cleanser mixed with just enough water to make a toothpaste consistency? Turn the reel on its back and back lap by hand then? Ive no money for fancy gadgets but if i dont sharpen these push reel blades i shall die of exhausting dragging that beast to and fro...the mailman will find me belly up out cold having kicked the bucket from heart attack.
Does the stationary bottom blade need to be sharpened too? If so, how?
No George you’d wear it out
Just get a new one when you need it
@@ALLETTMOWERSUK Hi, thanks for the reply, I've since had a go at backlapping 3 or 4 cylinder mowers and seem to have got the hang of it now 👍 cheers!
Hello, great video. What kind of grid of backlapping compount is best to use. Regards from The Netherlands
I do this and it just backs the nut off the bolt. Haha. What am I doing wrong?
What lubricant do you suggest using on the reel once paste is washed off?
I'd try fluid film. It's lanolin based and wont kill grass and prevents rust.
What grade grit should I use, 80, 120, 180 or 240 for regular maintenance
80/120 is fine :)
I use 80 for fairways and tees and 120 for greens. Also, adjust it so there's no squeaks. Reel to bedknife shouldn't make noise.
can you get the same result by just using a file on top of the blades?
You probably could but the problem with that is you probably won't end up getting exactly the same about of material ground all along the cutting edge of every blade so it won't cut consistently. The beauty of backlapping is that the tool hones itself so its always perfectly tuned.
Can you do this with the Windsor 14 s?
Great video! Thanks.
Any advice on cutting blade bearings
What kind of material i should buy and where?
Backlapping paste from pitchcare 80-120 grit
@@ALLETTMOWERSUK thanks
What paste did you use
What grade was the cutting compound ? Course , medium ???
🙂👍 very good video, Thank you
Not sure if I’m being stupid here but if the drill is in reverse gear, doesn’t that turn the blade in “normal’ rotation rather than reverse?
In case it makes a difference, my mower is a Suffolk Punch.
Michael Ganner you are completely correct. If your drive wheel is at the other end then it would need to be in reverse
Depends on whether or not the drill is used in the northern or southern hemisphere... Basics man 👨
You're not the only one to stop the "reverse function" is called clockwise to the rest of us. I suppose if Allett standardised on left handed threads (like is used in the plastic gear being used to drive it) a reverse drive is normal to the rest of us.
He looks like the James bob actor.
nice
I remove the white drive gear and replace it with two left hand thread M12 nuts that I lock together which then allows a 19mm socket to get a good drive on the spindle.
sweet
Where can I buy the grinding paste ? I can only find the small pots for valve grinding
wow
Bit over dressed to be working on gardening equipment. Looking good.
Why are you squatting????
So he’s close to the cylinder?
8 mins.
You mean a reel mower
Britain invented the modern lawn mower in 1830. The original inventors saw how a cutting cylinder trimmed cloth in a textile mill and applied the idea to a piece of machinery to trim grass blades... the rest is history but it's clear to understand why it's called a cylinder mower.
