    For the life of me, I don’t understand why people continue to compare David’s solo releases to Pink Floyd or anything Roger does. The band broke up 30 years ago (The Endless River notwithstanding) and Roger left 40 years ago. David has made it very clear, he doesn’t want to recreate what the band did, before or after Roger left. IMO, David made 2 brilliant albums in On an Island and Rattle That Lock, and if The Piper’s Call is any indication, we’re in for another musical treat come September 6! (Roger’s birthday incidentally, which cannot be a coincidence) I like the song more and more every time I listen to it. The sort of “asymmetrical” structure, how it builds as it progresses, a great bass phrasing by Guy, and the layering of the classical & lap steel guitars, all capped off by a wonderfully aggressive lead from his Les Paul Goldtop. And the sudden end to the song just leaves you wanting more… 4 months to wait.

      David Gilmour is his own artist. Anyone that complains because he doesn’t sound like Pink Floyd, or for that reason he should quit making music, are idiots.

    As to your comment about Pink Floyd's subsequent releases without the entire band, you obviously never truly listened to "Momentary Lapse of Reason" or "Division Bell," which in my opinion are fantastic albums, and right up there with their best. Thank God i gave "Piper" a shot, because had i listened to you, i would have deprived myself of audio-nirvana. It was great, and i mean great. My anticipation for the new album, after listening to "Piper " just once, quadrupled. There is no upcoming release that i look forward to more than "Luck and Strange," and i know i'm not alone.

      No offense, but for me Lapse is a bit off. Seems to be missing something. Keyboard heavy.

      @TrackXTrack  5 месяцев назад +2

      Momentary Lapse was how I discovered Pink Floyd. It was my gateway album. I practically wore out the cassette. It’s a very good album. But it doesn’t reach the level of the work they did before it. Just my opinion, of course… though arguably a majority opinion. I’m glad you so enjoyed Gilmour’s new song.

    I absolutely love this song and really can’t wait to hear the rest of the album, David Gilmour is an absolute legend and at 78 he’s still giving us incredible music

      He’s a legend for a reason

    Just to make things clear to the criticism. Gilmour has nothing to prove.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  5 месяцев назад +2

      Certainly true. But an indisputable legacy does not obligate anyone to praise or even like a legend’s late-career output. I greatly respect David Gilmour, but I will never give him or any artist of any stature a “free pass” on any release. I also fully accept the fact that Gilmour does not care in the slightest what I or you think about his music.

    I am enjoying this track. And really looking forward to the album. These days in my life, David Gilmour’s music appeals *much more* to me than Roger’s does.

    I’m a huge fan of Gilmour. Not too keen on the on the verses of the song but growing on me but his voice in the chorus matches up to anyone sounds amazing and powerful for his age. You can definitely tell his songs are written by a very smart novelist his wife Polly.

    This song is "cruising" music!! I liked it!! ..the more times you listen to it, the more you like it.
    Pink Floyd has been my favourite band, beggining my journey with Meddle many years ago. I dont expect "Pink Floyd" I expect David Gilmour, which is not Pink Floyd, so changing ones expectations is a good start. Post Pink Floyd, Division Bell was sensational!! Some great tracks on Davids first solo album also. I look forward to the release of Luck & Strange in September.

    My first thoughts about this song were, "oh, it's good", perhaps this being indicative of not expecting him to still be so original and fresh. Putting aside a maybe crippling need to perpetually compare him to Floyd's back catalog and other more acerbic members of the past band, I feel like he kinda knocks it out of the ball park with this one. It's rare for an artist to remain this good for this long. Gotta celebrate that!

    I'm reserving all judgement until I hear the full album, and then listening to it a few times. However, I think this is a fair assessment of this initial release. Always excited to watch one of your reviews, especially if it is in the Pink Floyd sphere.

    First listen I was not really convinced, but the more tries I do, the better it sounds( it happens quite often with Gilmour stuff) and cool gritty solo to cap it off

    If it wasn't for David gilmour joining way back when, Pink Floyd would have drifted off into obscurity. Dave still would have gone on to major success.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hard to say. Neither has been very successful as a solo act beyond appealing to the massive fan base of Pink Floyd. Gilmour’s talent as a guitar player is unmatched, so he might have found success in another band where he didn’t have to shoulder the entire burden of songwriting. But Roger does not play well with others. I think he’d have struggled to find success.

      If Syd Barrett would not have had his breakdown Pink Floyd was well on their way stardom. Syd's material was better than anything the Floyd put out during that same period of time.

    I’ve no desire to hear him recreate Pink Floyd but I find his solo stuff fairly dull. Just not much to get excited about.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  5 месяцев назад +1

      That’s totally fair. I respect Dave for making the kind of music that fuels him creatively at this point in his life, but it obviously isn’t going to appeal to some fans of the older music. I won’t call his music dull, but I won’t call it exciting either.

      @colingoodall7719 That’s the point I talk about throughout the video. He doesn’t sound like Pink Floyd, and I appreciate that. Were you not listening or just too eager to post a “rolling eyes” emoji? If you paid attention instead of commenting without listening, you might find we have similar opinions on Gilmour’s solo sound.

    Upon first listen, I thought to myself, "haven't I heard this before?" Sounds like Today and Take A Breath mixed in with shades of Faces of Stone. Slow tempo, familiar chord progressions and vocal style. Lyrics are annoyingly blah. Overall fairly underwhelming and forgettable. Hopefully the other tracks will have more 'bite'.
