Shõgun was one of my father's favourite books, he read it so many times it was litereally falling apart. I remember when the TV series was showing he was working afternoon shift so I had to sit there and record it for him on the VHS. One funny moment was when I forgot to pause it during a commercial, however it was a commercial for Singapore airlines or something, and the first part of the ad showed a colourful little boat with red sails against a sunset. It fit so well and looked like part of the series he never noticed. Years later the series came out on DVD and he sat through it yet again for the umpteenth time; he's been gone for 16 years so now it's part of my own movie collection. This new version does look good, hopefully it's as good as the trailer.
The trailer is an overt promotion of healthy heterosexual relationships lol And there's not a single Negros among the samurai! In today's mainstream, that's an unacceptable luxury. It's a scandal, I'm not afraid of the word!
I read the book when I was 15. Saw the movie afterwards. This DOES NOT LOOK GOOD. This looks like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets Tom Cruise horrendous samurai BS. It looks like a f***ing joke. But I guess that samurai are back on mainstream with Sekiro, Nioh, AC Codename Red and Rise of the Ronin, not to mention animes and whatnot, so why not a historically inaccurate drama with flashy comic battles, right?
@@metodoinstinto Well speaking for myself, I loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Last Samurai, House Of Flying Daggers, Curse Of The Golden Flower and Red Cliff. Sure, CT-HD and HoFD have a touch of the fantasy about them, but I didn't mind that, so sounds as if I'll like this new version of Shõgun. I guess they're not for everyone.
James Clavell's novel is brilliant, what a great read! Richard Chamberlain, Tishiro Mifune and Yoko Shimada's performances in the 1st series are outstanding. Can't wait to see this version!!
My favorite out of the Asia Novels. And yes, Toshiro will be tough shoes to fill, But Hiroyuki will do just fine. The one that I am worried about is Frankie Sakai who played Yabu. What a performance that was! Hopefully they won't stray too far from the Novel.

I don't get the hype. It looks like another Hollywood "white man goes to savage land, finds himself in a conflict with locals, gets rejected at first but eventually everyone on the good side accepts him and he helps them, and in the end he sleeps with an exotic local girl". How many of these types of movies/shows do we need to have? LOL
@@darthvadeth6290 As many as they want to make? As many as we want to watch? Both? But I also don't get the hype. My guess it's the same people that leave a 5/5 ⭐️ review on episode one, knowing there's a 90% chance that the rest of a show will flop.
@@darthvadeth6290 It's a remake of a very popular and well done movie series. The series is an adaption of a very good bestseller. And that bestseller based his novel on the historical figure of William Adams. While many events of the series are fictional of course, William Adams WAS the most influential foreigner in Japan of that period, he WAS key advisor of a shogun and he DID become a samurai. And the hype is mostly due to the fact that the original series was very well done but 45 years old. We are just eager so see an updated version with modern technology and budgets. It's certainly more interesting than another installment of John Wick, Fast&Furious or stupid superhero movies. EDIT: I want to add that, since you seem to be not familiar with the material, the story is NOT the usual "westerner goes east and introduces western values and they all love it". Telling the story through the eyes of a westerner is the easiest way to introduce westeners to a culture and period that we aren't familiar with. And this IS all about japanese culture and that period. John Blackthorne (the fictional book version of Adams) isn't converting anyone to become western. He learns to love the culture and ultimately decides to stay there voluntarily. By the end of the story he despises the west and doesn't want any of that anymore. So, no, not the usual tropes.
Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend. Him just being in it is worth the watch. Anna Sawai, who played Kiriko in Ninja Assassin is a very underrated pick up. The novel (Shogun) is one of the greatest stories ever written. It's up there with The Lord of The Rings series, Dune, Journey to the West, the Harry Potter series, and A Game of Thrones (Song of Ice & Fire series). It isn't talked about enough actually compared to those books. If you haven't read it and you're reader, give it a read. It's worth your time, especially if you like history.
As a kid I was fascinated by the story. As an adult, I deeply enjoyed the old series. And no be sure, this will be my personal No. 1 Start of a new TV-series this year!
Shogun remastered! James Clavell’s unsurpassed historical masterpiece brought to the screen once more was long overdue. The visuals-showing the turmoil, the passion, the intrigue, the bloody battles among the warring samurai- are stunning. This is my must-see-TV event of 2024.
Shogun is an amazing book. The way it captivates the reader and draws attention to Japanese culture and the stark differences between it and western culture at the time was done with respect with respect. I hope, if this series is based on the book, all the writers are fans and attempt to honor the book properly by conveying it accurately.
@@OmoshiroiWagunura-op9fy yeah, the endowment fascination can get old, but it is a real thing. If it exists today (it does, from personal and anecdotal experience, one of the first 10 questions I'm asked is about my endowment. The response from the men is, "yeah, that's amazing, but ours are very hard". The response from women varies), it certainly existed back then. It may be annoying that it appears as often in the book just as it comes up often in real life, but it's real. More to the point of respect (with admission that I may be viewing the book through rose tinted glasses as it's been years since I read it), Blacthorne goes on at length, repeatedly, about the organization, cleanliness, and hidden social tactics of the culture. He falls in love with the people and takes on their hearts. It may not sound like respect to some but it does to me. None of that, true or false, would call for a modern revision to satiate the appetites of imaginary modern audiences though, which is the thing I hope doesn't happen. I purchased another copy and will reread (it's been years) to remember what does and doesn't happen, then I'll consider giving the show a go.
There is almost nothing about Japanese culture or European culture in either the old series or this one. Almost the entire series pompously tells about the political structure of stunningly cruel feudal Japan against the backdrop of Europe, which is already emerging from feudalism. The book is a look at Japan from the side of a feudal lord. A highly embellished look. Propaganda.
@@chestersleezer8821 It certainly looks bloodier than the 80s mini-series. I'll definitely be re-reading Shogun before I watch this series. Oh. And don't forget Clavell also wrote "Gai-Jin", set 20 years after "Tai-Pan" and is about Malcolm Struan, the son of Tess and Culum Struan. Pretty good book. Gotta read all four (including the masterpiece that is "Noble House") again, soon.
that is a LARGE estatement. The novel is good, etc but as all historical novels the historical value is VERY limited and this is no exception. They normally full certain characters with many modernizing aspects that in many ways go against the historical sources. I can recall some with, for example, Gaius Marius as an honorable man with good aspirations and a victim of other's plans when, according to historical sources of the moment he was a master of assasinating his oponets.....
I read it when I was teenager and the only part I remember is when all the Japanese women were amazed by the size of his penis. Like I said, I was a teenager...
I didn't even know this was being made. Read the book and saw the original series back in the day ... and reread it as recently as a year ago. I hope this is as good as it looks ... the book and the series were both fantastic !
Same here. Borrowed the book in Jr High and never returned it lol have read it countless times. One day saw the mini series on DVD in HMV...and bought it. Still have it. The book is a true masterpiece. I hope this new series does it justice.
good for you I learn more about japanese history with Japan's video games displaying all the major actors of the period with their background etc .... and it was way more exciting than the fictional garbage of a random white dude on Japan's history
@NapoleonAquila You can "keep" your stupid silly games. I'd rather learn about ancient Japan by reading both historical fiction as well as straight history.
@@NapoleonAquila The white dude was not so random, though, he was based on William Adams, an English sailor in service of a Dutch expedition to Japan. He eventually became an advisor and diplomat in service of the Tokugawa shogun, together with Jan Joosten they became one of the first non Japanese samurai. Honestly just going by the trailer they clearly didn't focus too much on the western characters which is ideal - the real drama is amongst the Samurai and they're just caught up in it. Works well in the book as a western reader "self insert" and should do so here too!

If they ever did a movie about Toshiro Mifune's life. Sanada would be perfect for it. To the uniniated. Mifune was the John Wayne of Samurai films in the 20th century. He was the inspiration for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The original ABC miniseries was an event. It was an impressive and thrilling show, from one of the best historical novels ever written. This remake looks equally impressive, with a heck of a cast and awesome looking production values. Definitely am pumped to see this.

No man alive is able to fit in Mifune-san's footsteps. But if someone comes very close, then it's Sanada-san. Love the man since Ujio in Last Samurai. As long time fan (almost 40 years now) of the book and the 80s TV series, I'm looking forward to this one. Goosebumps and tears. Can't wait to meet Toranaga and Blackthorne again!
@@galept I like Watanabe-san as well. Great actor. But I don't see him in Crouching Tiger at all. Chow Yun-Fat is a versatile martial artist and fits way better on the role. Ken is only trained in Kendo, I think.
There are two ways to depict Tokugawa Ieyasu (and by extension, Toranaga) in popular culture: as a charismatic leader that is patient and knows how to wait for the right time and lay down when needed (conceding Hideyoshi to rule Japan after the battles of Komaki and Nagakute) or as a cunning fox that can deal with alliances and politics (rise to power and establishing a shogunate). Toshiro Mifune’s interpretation of Toranaga was the first one, the gentle, and as he is unrivaled it is logical for Sanada to go the other route, the cunning. That way he doesn’t engage in a battle he cannot win against Mifune’s interpretation, give us something original instead of copying the acting we already have from the first Shogun series, and has room to shine for himself and not under another’s shadow.
From the trailer above, it does not look like it. Women beating up men in physical fights? Lady Mariko (the No. 1 woman in the story) was a strong (in character) woman in the original Michener's expansive novel (and a worthy story co-protagonist) but she was not involved in any physical fight with men, let alone win one.
Season 2 should be produced. The Battle of Sekigahara between Toranaga's 70,000 troops and Ishido's 80,000 troops, and the winter and summer battles at Osaka Castle after the unification of Japan. The battle between Ochiha and Toranaga. The novel ends with Season 1, but Japanese history is interesting from there on.

the original serie (i have it in 1080p) will be WAY better than this @Sscarecrow and i really doubt you ever read the book or watched the serie back then...
One thing I can say is that I was reminded of the charm and high recognition of samurai. Opinions, whether for or against, are free to express themselves. However, this work has already become extremely popular.
Last Samurai when I was 13 was epic. Little did I know I'd be in Japan in my twenties and watching Shogun from 1980 from my kotatsu. Really going to be interested in seeing this!
The rule of war in Japan's Sengoku period was that if an enemy general was killed, he was always decapitated. The head was proof that the battle had been won. The flashy armor and helmets also had meaning. They were based on motifs of animals and insects from nature that the warlord worshiped. This was to bring their spiritual powers into oneself.
O M G. First time seeing this trailer and it’s the most excited I’ve been for any show in a long time. It looks so good. Like, you can tell when a show will live up to the trailer. This is one of those ones. The cast is stacked! Plus, FX doesn’t miss. Usually.
I just wanted it to be brutal and grounded and I’m very happy. Just finished the book I’m so hyped! That scene with the pistols was so badass and from the book. IIE! Mariko looks gorgeous. I hope they nail Yabu he was my fav character after Toranaga.
In the original series Yabu was played by a famous comedian/funny man in Japan. Seeing him as someone who boiled men alive was a shock to many in Japan. I love the original series and the book is my all time favorite book. The original series did a good job of condensing the story around Blackthorn over three nights to make an intelligible story. With a larger series we will hopefully get more of the story from the book which had to be left out for the original series.

Sanada Hiroyuki belongs to Sanada family. It's unique knowing he played a western intepretation of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the Shogun that eliminated a part of the Sanada clan.
The Sanada Clan survived the sengoku jidai. The elder clan decided to divide their support, the elder brother supported tokugawa, the younger brother (the famous sanada yukimura) fought for toyotomi.
The Emperor still existed in this era. However, no one attacked the Emperor. Because the Emperor was a sacred being, no one attacked him, not even the Shoguns.

Wow. I have long wanted to watch such Japanese films about shinobi samurai and about Japan Ancient and the Middle Ages, especially like this. I'll watch this movie. =) ❤
Been reading a manga set in this period called Shigurui -- absolutely brutal and graphic violence, but not in the typical manga/anime way. That's the vibe that this show seems to have from the trailer. It's ironic but unsurprising that it took a western production to capture this kind of tone. Japanese period dramas all typically seem to re-use the same kind of "chanbara" style of action developed in the 50s-70s. Stock sound effects for sword clangs, bright red blood spurting like fountains from a wound (or no blood at all). It's nice to see something that captures the gritty medieval vibe of the Sengoku period, and doesn't shy away from showing the graphic brutality of that era.
This looks amazing. I would like to see an adaption of the The Nicholas Linnear/Ninja Cycle series also. It has some of the most detailed description of Japan. It would be unbelievable if a studio could pull it off.
Samurai are heroes of the Japanese people It's not easy for everyone. Even if you have a problem, help the weak. There is a saying that only one who can stand up in the storm can become a samurai. from japan
Samurai are most definitely a major part of Japanese identity, but you really have no understanding of it. Literally only noble families or clans were samurai and often samurai were not the heroes you imagine them to be. It was not uncommon for samurai to kill people on the street for merely bumping into them or a misunderstood slight the perceived as disrespectful or a threat.
@XX38919 to truly understand what the 'Sengoku Jidai' was in Japan, is to merely understand what The Robber Baron Wars was to The American West.. but only this time. The Only armies belonged to The Robber Barons. Samurais and Bushido was merely The Rising Sun's version of Knights and The Code of Chivalry. OF COURSE The Purpose of it was to Inspire People to Become a Better Part of Themselves, and become an Inspiration to Society as A Whole. But what ends up happening is what always Happens in Human Society when Greed Gets involved. You get Corruption, and then you Get Titles issued by those Corrupt Few, to those who would benefit them and them alone. As time drags on, corruption gets worse, and you get nothing but Cowboys who don't care about Honour; no matter how much they Regurgitate it.. and unchecked Greed amongst The Elite, and Poverty amongst The Unfortunate. Sound Familiar? 😐 “History Doesn’t Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes” - Mark Twain
If you only saw/believed romanticized depictions of samurai through media and/or have a cursory knowledge of busidho, then totally. Otherwise, they were mostly just militarized stooges for Daimyo's & emperors. They weren't mythical white knights, they behaved exactly like soldiers & mercenaries behave.

I can already tell this is going to be one of my favorite shows. Holy damn.
Not sure yet, but it most certainly will be one of the 2024s shows!
The original was great. Good timing for a remake, too.
EDIT:
I want to add that, since you seem to be not familiar with the material, the story is NOT the usual "westerner goes east and introduces western values and they all love it".
Agreed with Shogun, just not with your whole list 🙂

Propaganda.
One of the all-time greatest novels ever written. James Clavell, master of the historical novel.
Yes and this is looking far better than the 1980 mini-series, James Clavell had a really good trilogy with Shogun, Tai-Pan & Noble House.
Then we can see Yabu, Toranaga, Mariko, Ishido... N at last our Anjin-san..
I didn't even know this was being made. Read the book and saw the original series back in the day ... and reread it as recently as a year ago. I hope this is as good as it looks ... the book and the series were both fantastic !
The book is really amazing. I really hope the movie doesn't disappoint.
I wouldn't hold my breath. But the sex scenes should make up for the gaps.
That whole series that James Clavell wrote ( Shogun, Tai-Pan, Noble House ) and a few others are really good reads.
Same here. Borrowed the book in Jr High and never returned it lol have read it countless times. One day saw the mini series on DVD in HMV...and bought it. Still have it. The book is a true masterpiece. I hope this new series does it justice.
I read all of Clavell's series. Have you read Shibumi by Trevanian?
Through his work, he dispelled the misunderstood image of Japanese samurai held by the West.
I read Shogun when I was 10 years old and watched the series with my parents. Really, really excited about this new version

I also like Ken Watanabe. I read that he was offered the lead role in Crouching Tiger but turned it down. He does great stuff.
@@galept I like Watanabe-san as well. Great actor. But I don't see him in Crouching Tiger at all. Chow Yun-Fat is a versatile martial artist and fits way better on the role. Ken is only trained in Kendo, I think.
The cringe is real, Gaijin. 🤢🤮
After i saw last samurai with Hiroyuki i was like he needs his own movie now we have a whole show to look forward lol nice!

Samurai are heroes of the Japanese people
It's not easy for everyone.
@@shadowgl9 you just went about the long way of explaining what a Knight is. 😂

Also, looks like Fox really spent a pretty penny on this series. They better deliver!
That is why his head got chopped off. A time when Japan closed it's borders to outsiders. Likely because of the missionaries spreading Christianity if I remember correctly.
@@loki76 Japaneses hated the peacefull Ainu too you are a mere ant of the Japan colony, even today, their coldness is has turned against them, depression, birthrate 0 etc.
@@loki76 And its a great excuse for the media to kill Christians (their ultimate fantasy) and hide behind historical accuracy. Its like if the Nazis made schindler's list lol
first time I have been excited about a show in decades
I loved Hiroyuki Sanada on The Last Ship.
That was where I first saw him and I was very impressed with his acting there. Feels like a Japanese Liam Neeson type actor.
Wow!! Looks intense and unlike the 80’s mini series this one appears to focus on the fighting. Coupled with the political intrigue, thus should be great. The book is amazing.
Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend. This is gonna be epicly awesome
Hiroyuki Sanada is the Samurai from all the best movies of Samurais. Thank you for your amazing career. Here's a quote from Samurai: ''Defeat your enemy, but let him go thinking he won. True victory is free from one's own ego.
It sounds like a zen quote.
damn that 00:41 gave me chill fr 🔥🔥🔥
I´m very excited to watch this series and it´s hard to wait till its weekly release. It looks much more opulent than the old movie with Richard Chamberlain. Disney made some magical movies and i´m openminded to believe the same for this production.
This is perfect. The time this year where I really got into playing Total War Shogun 2. Finally completing a campaign. And trying out all the other total war games. Getting really into strategy games. Chess. And Total War likesaid. And then these trailers and movies coming out. Great timing.
I bought TW Shogun 2 13 years ago, playing it right know. Best rts game ever made ahah. Can't wait for this tv show.
Can't wait for "our general is in Grave danger my Lord" and "our men are running from the battlefield shamefully display"
