See now this is awesome!!!! Very beautiful country!!! I think I might have to make a venture in to Canada and do some real snowmobiling!! How’d the skandic seem to do? I’ve been thinking about buying a new one, my father had one that he bought in1998 brand new and it’s a complete tank! I love riding it!

Chuck, Super video well done! Nice adventure, I would be thinking of a reason (or making one up!) to do that trip every year. I use a Ski-doo Expedition Extreme here in Maine.
I know this video was made a few months ago, but I just found & enjoyed it immensely. I especially enjoyed the scenery, wide open spaces, and those awesome little villages. Are these Natives/Inuit's settlement? Other than fishing/hunting, how do people make a living? I'm from Northern Ontario, all we got here is trees, trees & more trees. While going for a sled ride, we burn, almost, as much gas on chainsaws, cutting the blowdowns, as we do on the snowmachines...:-). Final question, if I may: Did you ever have a chance to compare your SWT vs. a WT ? Awesome video, new subscriber. Thank you Sir.
Thanks for the detailed comment! Yes it was quite the trip and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves for certain. Most of the communities along this coast were primarily Inuit and innu. There are fish plants in some communities and just outside of Nain there is a huge nickel plant (Vale). Beautiful people who would give their heart to anyone. To answer your other questions regarding WT vs SWT: I had three VK 540 (Yamaha) snowmobiles and out approx 65,000 kms collectively on them. They were awesome machines but then I acquired a SWT (600 ace) in 2013. I was absolutely amazed at the difference the wider track made (plus the four stroke engine etc). I used that machine for 5 winters and then upgraded to the 900 ACE SWT. I honestly don’t think I’d ever be able to downgrade now. I think a WT would be more than sufficient in an area where there wasn’t much snow, but we have so much here and the temps never go below zero degrees and therefore it stays quite powdery. So we need a machine that will “float” better to keep from getting stuck.
Wow! I didn't expect such a quick response, especially while commenting on an older video. Thank you so much. I've been to NS & PEI, always wanted to visit NFL, but couldn't make it. Life & work got in the way. Seeing your videos, makes me sorry that I didn't. I own a 2017 Vk540, it's ok, the price was right, it floats in powder snow. Takes a football field to get it turned around...not ideal in heavy wooded areas. Sorry for another lengthy comment. Take good care.
That was a machine that my friend was delivering to someone else who owned it in one of the communities we passed through. He was doing them a favour by driving it up. It was a great trip. We are planning another as we speak 👍
I certainly would....this is my second one now. My first one was a 2013 600 ace skandic SWT. I love both machines and still have them both. They work incredibly well and an added bonus to the skandic design is that the A-arms are not exposed but rather contained within the main body👍
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Thanks! I'll go see the dealership Monday they have 2 in stock and one almost sold I think I'll pay myself a treat! I would say see you on the trail but where I plan to go there's no trail! Cheers from the prairies!
Great trip. Do you prefer pulling the Pelican sled or something on skiis? payload in 1/2 ton truck enough or you prefer 3/4 ton HD? You have 900 Skandic wide track but do you think I can get by off 600 wide track Skandic, saves me some money on 15k machine. Do you carry ramps and a winch in truck bed in case no snow bank to load the snow machine?
Hey Tony I prefer the Pelican sled hands down. I would prefer to have the 3/4 ton truck but very expensive. I compromised and put an extra leaf spring in the back and a lifter in the front. I owned a 600 ace for many years before the 900’s came out. Suited me just fine. Unless you’re into carrying huge sleigh loads of gear, carrying a person in back with you a lot, or riding in deep deep snow, a 600 would be just fine. For my lifestyle, the 900 suits me better I carry A folding ramp with me all the time. No winch. Often times I just use a bank of snow. Cheers bud👍
The bombardier is the best snowmobile in both performance and comfort. I’ve owned several models of snowmobile and I wouldn’t change anything now that I’ve driven the bimbardier. (Skandic/expedition)
how many km did you put on the 600 ace swt . ? Any issues with engine ? Do you still have it ? I have a 2014 skidoo renegade 600 ace 16" wide track 137" Gary Christian Marathon On
I put over 8000 on the 600 ace before I upgraded to the 900 ace. That machine still runs flawlessly. First click of the starter and runs smooth. In fact I used it last week and put over 100 kms on it and I was thinking then how trustworthy it’s been.
That method is called a "Swedish Candle" and I use it from time to time in my cook-ups. Always reliable and lasts a long while, depending on the size of stump of course 👍
Personally I would go with the Skandic 900 as I know it's capabilities. The tundra's are relable as well. I dont have much experience with the Voyager....maybe others could chime in here? Two main factors are what type of snow you get and and what you intend to do with the machine (haul heavy loads, trail vs off-trail, etc). Here in the North, we have 6 feet average of powdered snow and I haul a sled at least 50% of the time. Hence i went with the Skandic 900 as its a work horse, and with teh 24" track, it keeps me from getting stuck when off-trail. I'd definitelt go with a 4-stroke as they are so quiet, easy on gas, no fumes, and very relaible with less maintenace.
Great trip ! Pretty dam cool if you ask me. What is the reason for going that far for the Yamaha, I heard you say he bought it, but nothing closer ? Just curious.
He was lucky enough to win that snowmobile on a public auction so we incorporated getting it back to his hometown around our trek. All worked out great👍
No not at all. Roughness isn't really an issue at all. In fact, I have the upgraded struts which could in theory make it rougher again....but not an issue
My first and only sled was a 1979 5500 Blizzard with leaf spring front end suspension. It does not get much rougher but I never spent much time thinking about how rough the ride was. I was 18 at the time so my body would have a different opinion at 50... Great video. I would take this over a tropical island vacation any day of the week. Very few women share that opinion, including my wife.
I spent a great year in Happy Valley Goose-bay in the mid 90's. I went caribou hunting in Nain..amazing country. How do you like the SWT as opposed to the WT?
In Labrador a SWT is a must when you travel in the places I do (and mostly alone). My goal is to never get stuck which means if they had a 40" wide track I'd most likely have it lol
I guess I don’t do much side hill driving other than it I’m trying to access a rough area. It’s certainly not built like a mountain machine. The swt is designed for travel in deep snow and carrying heavy sleigh loads. Worked perfectly in that realm.
Beautiful trip. Is this the trip in Newfoundland that is very tuff and many people don’t make it but if you do it’s a thing and you may even get a plaque or ribbon?
Roughly 15 mpg but highly depends on the load you’re hauling and the snow conditions. Some days with no sleigh and on groomed trail I get better. However hailing a sleigh full of firewood in powdered snow would be much less
Absolutely not. Those rigs are here everywhere, and although they are really good for snow travel, they won’t go where the 24” wide track will go. If the atv “bottoms out” then it gets stuck…..bad sometimes of course
Those cabins are out there by the snowmobile clubs that groom the trails. We pay an annual membership fee and the club grooms the trail and provides the “warmup shacks”
I’ve used many John, but this one came with the snowmobile. It is a Garmin Montana 680t. It certainly isn’t the newest/largest one on the market, but I find it very, very easy to use and I’ve followed it for thousands of kms now. Coupled with this is the nice mount that comes with it and it starts/stops in conjunction with the machine starting/stopping.
We had a different trip planned for the South Coast of Labrador this past Spring....but of course, the virus changed those plans. We will complete this Spring though if all goes well....can't wait!!👍
Hello Chuck. I am seriously considering getting a Skandic. The local dealer has a 20 inch track with a 600 ace. I will use it for recreation plus hauling some wood up a moderate hill. I want to buy the right thing the first time. Would I be ok with just the 600 or would it be a big advantage to get the 900?
Hey Dean. I used a 24” SWT skandic with a 600 ACE in it for 5 winters and found it great. Although there were times when I wished I had more power, it always handled my towed loads. Our snow in Labrador is powdery for the most part and if we make a track beforehand, it usually hardens fairly quickly. Given those situations, I could haul any load of wood I wanted. Having said that, the 900 Ace bridges the gap I was looking for and now I really am left with no wants at all. Check out this video where you see us hauling wood with my old 600 Ace (yellow hood) and my newer 900 ace: ruclips.net/video/yvTkSm8adzs/видео.html

how many km did you put on the 600 ace swt .
600 ace is the most reliable snowmobile engine i know people that have over 30 000km on them
Just a great video... Wished I was tagging along..
Jim! Tyip chuck!
Thanks jim👍
Watched it again!!!!
Hah!! You have the record!!!
I am steel gunna watch this video on tell 2020!!
A good idea with the tree stump to heat water
That method is called a "Swedish Candle" and I use it from time to time in my cook-ups. Always reliable and lasts a long while, depending on the size of stump of course 👍
I can’t pick between the skandic 900 the tundra 600 or the voyager 550 opinions
All worked out great👍
Chuck Porter - Everything Outdoors ahhh ok makes sense , sure was some sites to see.
that was quit the trip, i am wondering how your Skandic handled on the ice, did the struts make it a rougher ride?
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors I have the 900 Ace WT. I always carry a come along ..these babies are Heavy!
What is your take on the swt. Does it make side hill driving to hard and no fun?
I guess I don’t do much side hill driving other than it I’m trying to access a rough area. It’s certainly not built like a mountain machine. The swt is designed for travel in deep snow and carrying heavy sleigh loads. Worked perfectly in that realm.
Beautiful trip. Is this the trip in Newfoundland that is very tuff and many people don’t make it but if you do it’s a thing and you may even get a plaque or ribbon?
No this trip took place in the Labrador portion of the province
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors awesome trip. I enjoyed a full watch.
What’s the name of the kettle that y’all set on top of the pan full of burning wood?
Kelly kettle.
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Sweet! Going to go find one for my winter adventures here in Utah.
Looks like an epic trip! Gotta ask... on the blue sleigh are those cross members bolted thru the runners or are they screwed together ?
Screwed together 👍
how many miles per gallon would you get with the 900 Scandic?
Roughly 15 mpg but highly depends on the load you’re hauling and the snow conditions. Some days with no sleigh and on groomed trail I get better. However hailing a sleigh full of firewood in powdered snow would be much less
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors thanks a lot for the info. Great video
Will the ATV with the tracks go places that the Scandic won't go?
Absolutely not. Those rigs are here everywhere, and although they are really good for snow travel, they won’t go where the 24” wide track will go. If the atv “bottoms out” then it gets stuck…..bad sometimes of course
I see these small cabins you stop at and wonder if they belong to the group?
Those cabins are out there by the snowmobile clubs that groom the trails. We pay an annual membership fee and the club grooms the trail and provides the “warmup shacks”
Watch ed this video at least 10 times great video chuck!
Haha!! You've watched it about 9 more times than I have!! lol Good stuff buddy, glad you enjoyed!!👍
Can't help myself
Hahahha 😂😂 hilarious!! lol. Glad you enjoy bud👍
👍👍👍👍
Great video Chuck
Great trip by the looks of it. What do you use for a GPS on your machine?
I’ve used many John, but this one came with the snowmobile. It is a Garmin Montana 680t. It certainly isn’t the newest/largest one on the market, but I find it very, very easy to use and I’ve followed it for thousands of kms now. Coupled with this is the nice mount that comes with it and it starts/stops in conjunction with the machine starting/stopping.
I guess being from Wabush , you probably know Brian Greening.
John Adams yes I do! Small town and small world!!
He's my brother in law. Like you, he has many thousands of kms on his machines over the years.
Yes he certainly does his share of going for sure. Thanks for making the connection!
What is one of my favorite snowmobile videos?
Wicked ya needs more skandic videos!
Weld Weld we have between 6-7 months of winter so won’t be long and I’ll be riding her again!!!
When are you going back to nain?
We had a different trip planned for the South Coast of Labrador this past Spring....but of course, the virus changed those plans. We will complete this Spring though if all goes well....can't wait!!👍
nice trip
Great and subbed
Thanks Jeff 👍
Check out this video where you see us hauling wood with my old 600 Ace (yellow hood) and my newer 900 ace:

I have a Skandic WT with a 600 ACE and do the things with it you want to do, absolutely no problems.
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Thank you for the feedback. Getting my first snowmobile and learning as much as I can before I purchase. Left the big city and moved to a rural area.
@@wespuckdog3897 Thanks for the comment. Good to know the 600 is up to the task as well.
Thanks for the feedback once again. Based on that I decided to get an Expedition LE with the 900 Rotax. I can go trail rding and back woods exploring. Nice torquey cruising machine.
Great movie! I loved the box you got on your Scandic, could you send me a link or point me in the right direction so i can get ahold of one?
Stig
Arctic Circle, Norway.
Stig Roger Evenesdal thanks for your kind words! I love the cargo box as well-it is the best accessory I have on it. However, it was made privately and I bought it off of another person and don’t know the maker of it. It’s really too bad as many many people have commented on it and are interested. I’m going to keep trying to find out it’s maker and in the event I am successful I will definitely post! Thanks again!
Another trip to the coast this year?
Absolutely. Plans in the making now
