I grew up in Southern CA in the '60's, listening to James Brown (along with all the other greats of that period). NEVER, in my wildest dreams, did I ever think that 50 years later, I'd have a white, teenage, girl, from Canada, explaining the technicalities of Mr. Brown's music. Life is FULL of surprises, isn't it?
Hi, great lesson, thanks. quick question! It really looks like you are muting that D string (the G note) in the Eb9 at 1:45. Are you? Seems like you really only hit the top 3, sometimes 4, strings anyway -- so ... ?
James Brown wasn’t really an instrumentalist. He was a fantastic, energetic dancer with a screamin’ voice, but not much for developing guitar chord voicings, so I give most cred to his geetar man

Thanks great lesson. Because I have short stubby fingers my fingering reach is somewhat limited. I cannot bring my finger down flat enough to bar that lower E string and for the Eb9 chord I have to slightly move my fingers off the pressing of that cord to give me the reach to the 8 fret. Despite these limitations this is something I can incorporate into my playing. Great that you show the chords on the left side in a good size and provide the link. I take a photo of them with my smart phone and pull them up when I practice. I was unlucky not to be born with long bony fingers but I am able to get by with what I have. Thanks and have a great day.
