This is a really perfect example to point to when some idiot calls George Harrison a bad guitar player... which happens way more often than it should! I think George is one of the most underrated guitar players of all time! In my opinion he pretty much invented the anthemic "rock" guitar solo and should be recognized for having done so. His solos are so melodic and so beautiful, and when he started playing solos with a wah and a slide, he took his genius and created yet another completely unique approach to playing guitar solos. If you think his solos are simple, a) just try learning his solos yourself and I think you'll find they're deceivingly complex, and b) just try taking a stratocaster and a slide while using a wah-wah pedal, and I think you'll find it will take you a really long time to get that approach down, if you ever can at all! Long live the Master, long live George Harrison! 🕊️❤️🕊️❤️🕊️
Ayla, I'm 53 years old and have been playing bad rhythm guitar for years. Since watching your channel, I've upped my game considerably. Great content and so simply walked through. Myself and my 13 year old Daughter thank you!
This may be a masterclass of the solo, just never overlook the masterclass in writing and chord progresion. We know how Sinatra adored the song, but Elton John was quoted to say ..."something is one of the best love songs ever written. Better then yesterday, much better. It's like the song that I've been chasing for like 35 years". As for the solo... George performed the solo in one take with an orchestra accompaniment
That lick haunted me for years. I wouldn't even try to learn it because it was "magic" and the reason I started playing in the first place. I have never played a Beatles tune in public, and never will; they were done perfect in the first place to my ears. You have such a clean style, bravo ! 👏
Teenager in the early sixties, how lucky was i, ,grew up in England listening to the Beatles ,saw them in 1965 what a great player George was, what a legacy he left behind.........Fab,
In videos of George and Clapton on tour, it certainly appears he is playing those notes but in a different place on the fret board. Looks like he’s playing higher and on different strings. It’s definitely a solo he worked out in context with the chords he’s playing over. George always did his best to make the song better with his contribution. He understood what “serving the music” was really about and excelled at it.
This song has one of the most beautiful solos I've ever heard: every note placed perfectly on the chord and at the exact moment. Very beautiful. Thank you so much for the video, Ayla = )
Ayla, beautifully played. I have had to play this solo hundreds of times and unfortunately, I sort of changed it up a bit over the years, though I used to play it identically to what GH played, like you are showing here. It's one of the most beautiful songs every written by GH or anybody else for that matter, and certainly a beautiful solo. People sometimes don't realize the genius of the Beatles, because they WROTE these songs, the music, and these solos and sounds are what made these songs so incredible and instantly identifiable with the Beatles. Great Job
That is amazing how the technical and mathematical side of music can be figured out, understood, and played. I wish I could do what you do on the guitar. You are awesome, highly intelligent, and a very beautiful person. You've got me mystified while being demystified.
I recently learned his solo on Dig a Pony and it has a similar melodic, target the cord tones, feel. It’s deceptively simple sounding but contains several interesting note choices that make it distinctly George. At one point he does a 1 1/2 step bend up high (d) and resolves way down to the b7 of the G7 chord (f). Wow! It’s a dissonant note but sounds killer. And like Something he resolves out of the dissonance by sliding into the major third of the chord as it changes. Great stuff. Nice lesson!
You are great Ayla. You played de solo greatly. Something is a heavenly inspiration George Harrison had. Unforgetteble for ever. Thank you so much Ayla. God bless you.
This solo a perfect blend of melodic lines and playing over chord changes. And yes it really is one of the tastiest solos ever played. Larry Carlton does the same thing on his solos.
George played a lot of good stuff across the years, and wrote some fine songs, but this little solo is truly a gem. There's a little blues, a little jazz, and a rock and roll sensibility, but mostly there's a melody inherent in his choices that carries your ear through the changes. Which, I know, is a lot of what you said.
I so appreciated your treatment and theory explanation of this song. I was 13 the evening The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan in 1964. Keeping attention on their music is a noble task by carrying it into the future. Bravo.
Ayla, accolades here are so true. Your lovely, knowledgeable presentation of one of the greatest songs ever written is wonderful **something** all musicians appreciate! Thank you.
SO WONDERFUL to see younger (than me!) generations still appreciate, learn, understand and PLAY the music that I love and grew up with!! So much so that her playing and narrative brought a tear to my eye. Subscribed!👍
I learned this solo years ago by ear. Like you, I found it gorgeous and melodic. I never dissected it in the way you have. I appreciate the lesson and will refer to it again when I am writing songs with a similar mood. There are a lot of people who are unaware of how sophisticated some of the Beatles music was. In fact, they were versed in jazz chords very early on. And punctuated their songs and melodies with them often. I doubt George Harrison went through this kind of analysis in constructing the solo. But he sure knew his instincts and the structure he was playing to. Thank you for this video.
Truly you are a very knowledgeable guitar player. The vocabulary associated with all the changes are of a person who has a great understanding of the neck board. I really enjoyed your explanation and realized I have catching up to do!! Fantastic eye opener!!!!!
I am not the greatest person for info on the Beatles but this is one of the songs you know it when you hear it -- Such a great tune and a great breakdown of it!
Very impressive! I’ve been playing guitar since I was 14 and my 17 year old daughter is taking guitar lessons right now. I’m a proud poppa & hope she becomes a great guitarist like you!
@Jason Peterson the drummer in my band used to mock Ringo for his "basic" style, then he tried playing some of his beats for a cover we were trying.... he couldn't do it justice. He stopped mocking him after that!
The amount of free information we have access to is awesome. I used to best myself up for only learning from tabs and not being classically trained but had to realize if I'm not getting better I'm being lazy. Started playing again for the love and started watching videos like these and I'm getting better so quick. Can't wait to shred like my favea
A simply lovely lesson! Sometimes you listen to songs without paying attention to how pretty they really are. Thank You for reminding me with your lovely playing!
This is great! Thanks for the lesson! I hope you do even more analysis like this one, cause the best thing is to really understand what's behind the melody and not just playing it.
Thank you for this and other guitar lessons. You are truly a nice guitar teacher with that fantastic smile. Thank you for teaching us this George Harrison solo.
You are right on. I think the proof is in the pudding... When he played this, live in Japan in 91, he added a beautiful intro. Extreamly well crafted. In case you didn't know, George did this one take solo while a bunch of orchestra musicians were playing along
Not a musician by any stretch of imagination but, I love the the tone of a Les Paul and the one thet you are playing in this tutorial is beautiful and moving
Excellent work! It’s amazing to see your skills in breaking this down and describing each note and it’s purpose in the context of the song. It’s also so nice to see your deep appreciation for the knowledge and skills of the original creators, George Harrison and The Beatles. It’s nice to see their legacy son the generations.
Think she nailed the theory and it’s execution behind this wonderful song. Of course George’s musical ability and talent added to its beauty. Saw the video of him playing this live in Japan with Clapton. He may have been playing a Fender Telecaster and Clapton played a Stratocaster. Sounded great live. Looking forward to the Beatles Get Back series beginning on Nov 25,2021.
Nobody but you could start with : "hello internet " and still make me feel you speak to me 😁 .. great content nicely presented, perfect rythm of teaching for me. Take care!
Beautifully presented, Ayla. I've always enjoyed playing this solo (from my favourite Beatles' song) but now I understand why it is composed the way it is. Thank you.
Thank you for this breakdown of this solo and explain how ut follows the chord progression. I begin to understand how chord progression and pentatonic scale are related. I learnd something from this analysis of this beautiful solo by Harrison.
Ayla sono un italiano iscritto al tuo canale da poco sei bravissima fai dei tutorial stupendi....poi i Beatles è il top congratulations sei pure bellissima.✌👍😊😊😊
It is striking just how many truly iconic guitar solos tend to follow the chord tones in creative, aesthetic ways-follow the chords you can't go wrong.
Ayla, love your giving this solo a spotlight. George Harrison was such an economical yet beautiful, melodic player. Feel and notes were everything in his playing, even in the early Beatle days. “something” is his masterpiece as far as soloing and you play it really well. On a side note, interesting to see you in the Gibson camp!
The musicians of this era do not think too much on scales, they just play. As said by SRV that he could be playing a Baug11 chord and he didn’t know, he just played what sound good to his ears… that’s it.
I think that's how all the best players do it no matter what generation. I think the best musicians have a weird, abstract understanding of music and some great musicians in their own right try to understand it through names and memorization. I think most of the greatest musicians in every era go by feel and I think people who delve into the theory are important to go into deep dives on the abstract the musicians feel. It's an interesting dichotomy that has always been there. Every music teacher teaches through scales but all of the greatest musicians taught guitar to themselves and then felt it out along the way.
Kurt Cobain always said music theory stifles creativity and he had a point. It’s better to go by what sounds good as opposed to what you’re supposed to do
i don't think that ayla made the claim anywhere that george harrison used theory to come up with the solo. she merely explained why it worked so well. i'm pretty sure that the wright brothers weren't aerospace engineers either but they did understand aerodynamics or the kitty hawk would have ended up as a pile of lumber at the end of the runway.

Wow! One take? George must have been very inspired. But Patty wasn’t really that excited when George told her about the song made for her.
That lick haunted me for years. I wouldn't even try to learn it because it was "magic" and the reason I started playing in the first place. I have never played a Beatles tune in public, and never will; they were done perfect in the first place to my ears. You have such a clean style, bravo ! 👏

No doubt this girl teaches guitar she's that good.
It’s a beautiful tune for sure , I always like to think back and imagine when George found all these great notes and how he blended them so beautiful.
Greatest solo ever, for it adds to the story not just accompany it. No flash, no acrobatics. Honest and sincere, like saying I love you.

did the guitar solo in this song in a band that I was in , so much fun to play this one, time to go over this again- very nice reminder- thanks !

George was a very underrated guitarist. He wasn't flashy, but everything he did sounded amazing and would fit the song perfectly.

You've made me appreciate this solo a lot more, Ayla. Thanks 😊
