Absolutely. I had one of these issues; that scrappy business at the bottom compliments of a stylist who over layered my already thinnish hair and cut too far back from my ears. (maybe noticeable in my pic) I consulted with a new stylist who is super talented. Since you can't ADD back length 😁, she created a blunt chin length bob that made my hair look full, healthy and amazing.
100% I like layered styles. My hair is just past my shoulders and it can be so difficult getting the right layered look. So many stylists don’t know how to layer hair so it looks good.
Very good... I have a new shag cut... or layered bob, and I was checking my front to back layers, side layers and ends in the back during this video. 😉 I have a very talented stylist, a master barber of 22 yrs, who totally gets how to layer my hair. I went from a longish pony tail with bangs to just below shoulders with layers and bangs. Your videos helped me know how I wanted to transition out of ponytail/bangs to an awesome easy and flattering layered cut. How about doing a video explaining the shag cut and a "do this, not that" tutorial to rock that style. BTW, you are a treasure ❤ Thank you for your time and passion. You are truly valued and appreciated.
More likely because my hair is very curly and frizzy and it’s really difficult to manage and it isn’t long so options are limited. I let them do what they want. 🤷🏼♀️
Your spot on.. my last haircut looks like 2 haircuts in one.. hate it. It’s disconnected. Fine hair has to have long layers or none.. So disappointing always waiting for my hair to grow out because the stylist has no sense of style!!
I hear you. It seems there are no stylists that do. Frustrating. With COVID I lost a lot of hair and it's so thin on top and sides but thinker at back bottom. It looks like a weird triangle on profile.😅
Hi,love your advice and videos! Could you please do a video for hairstyles for women over 50 who start having issues with sagging jaw lines, nose and mouth areas, something that might not draw attention to those facial features? Are bangs ok ? Thank you!!!
I don’t know if you’ve ever been a hair stylist instructor but your knowledge and ability to articulate the art of hair cutting is amazing. I never knew about the fact that there are styling rules or truths and also that you can take a hair cut and personalize it to the individual by cutting in volume in specific places all the while adhering to guidelines about where in the head layers should begin or end (i.e in front of the ears etc.) Great video so informative!
I love those "mullets". I'm in my 70s and grew up with the rocker styles, like Joan Jett. My hair is naturally wavy, and lots of layer look great on me.... at least I think so.
Me too! I had hair down to my back and cut it 8 inches off with some layers but Im still throwing it up in a damn bun. I think I’m going to go pixie because I’m sick of being a bun lady.
Oh BTW my friend was the singer of the opening band for JJ way back and when they were in Japan she saw JJ sitting at the bar and asked her how she was doing and JJ said, “I would feel better if you got the F away from me.” So not a big fan of her.
I would let you cut my hair ANY DAY! You know what you’re talking about and I’m so glad you pointed out that some women can even rock a wrong style if it’s on the right person! 🙌🙌
I like the first hairstyle you’re criticising, better than some of the haircuts I’ve had before I started cutting my own hair, my hairstyle has always been admired since. Deanne
I have been cutting my own hair in the last year (and coloring it) never had the best comments. Saves a lot of money and looks the way I want it! Better than than the way the stylist thinks it should look.
Mir ging es auch so In der lockdown Zeit habe ich meine Haare geschnitten Früher auch manchmal. Ich wurde gefragt welcher Friseur. Wo ich hingehe. Das war Gott Zufall?
The mistakes you point out absolutely make sense. The "mistakes" all make the hairstyles extreme or a bit odd requiring a conscious and deliberate intent in wearing them to pull them off and look edgy rather than odd. The examples you show really illustrate your points well and make even me, with no hair knowledge, get it!
Great video! I went to a stylist that made some of the mistakes mentioned as cutting the front next to the ears too short and a bang that didn’t connect to the cut. The result was an aged look and I hated it. But at that time I didn’t know what was wrong… Now I know! Thank you for the video! About my hair, I needed to wait 6+ months to cut again and was not an easy fix for the other stylist.
I hope you have something on longer curly/wavy hair. Everything I see is straight hair. I have too much hair to straighten, nor do I want to. So hard to find the right cut at age 55. I hope you have some tips or video!
Crazy good! Watching you has made me realize I’ve had some really bad haircuts over the years. Thankfully I’ve found a stylist that knows me and my hair well. We work well together keeping me from getting carried away with something that won’t work for me. Thanks for sharing all your tips and tricks.
Thank you for helping us older ladies know how to wear our hair. I have fine hair that is receding a little bit and basically a little longer in front than back shoulder length and wondering what I can do to look more youthful. Also have highlighted grey hair that I try to keep cooler tones in but always ends up brassy and I struggle with shine. If anyone can help me with this it would be you Justin. Thank you for your cool videos and your love of nature. We need to appreciate our natural environment and care for that as well as our hair!
You are so right Justin, I agree with the layering. I can see the difference. Now I need to get a good cut because I like layering and I need it done right. How I wish I could get a cut from you! Love your videos. I learn so much. Thank you Justin!
Would luv to c u do a curly girl bangs video. Bangs on curls r complicated, but us curlys deserve to have that option too! There has to be a way to make em work without adding a ton of maintenance! Would luv to c your take on it!
I think your educated opinions are right on! All the wrong haircuts remind me of my small hometown where people don't have much better to do than to go to the "beauty shop."
I gotta say, what I do love about these heavily layered and texturized haircuts, is that they lend themselves very well to air drying hair. On my thick and dense, wavy hair, at least. These type of cuts might look a little too 'extra' when carefully blowdryed, but if you leave the hair to just dry or diffuse it into it's natural texture, they can really bring out waves and loose curls. And when the hair does that, the layering suddenly looks *way* less extreme and choppy. Whereas the kind of layering and texturing appropriate for smoothened hair is hardly noticeable then.
Yeah, agree totally. When hair isn't layered enough in back, I end up frustratedly trying to scrunch it just to give it more of that layered look, more SHAPING.
Agree. I constantly tell my stylist, who has been cutting it for years lol, shorter, choppy, layers. Shorter on the crown. Shorter on the sides. All I want to do is shake and go, honestly. Now I myself, my hair will actually make nice curls without anything. She’s stuck on “feathering”. And she’s absolutely horrified with how short I like my bangs lol. They’re not baby bangs, but that’d be ok. I get a lot of compliments on it, so idk. I do have to say I have thick hair with a natural curl. Which I didn’t discover until I cut it short. I’ve pretty much always had long hair. About waist length. But whoo boy. I LOVE it short. I tell her, I don’t want to feel my hair lol
Yes! I just had my hair cut and asked for a lot of the bulk on the bottom in back to be taken out. When I blow dry it, it creates a weird shape. Last night, I dried it about half way and let it air dry the rest because I was too hot to finish drying it. It actually looks so much better, and I even had it in a clip to get it off of neck earlier today and when I took out the clip it looked amazing!
I love hearing your opinion. Of course some people can have weird edgy hair styles and it looks great on them. But still, it's great to hear opinions from a hair stylist. I learn so much from your videos. Thank you.
I really appreciate this explanation! It means a lot to find someone who puts so much thought into the look, presentation, and “the feels” of a haircut and style. I’m fortunate to have a great stylist who pulls straight up and scissors down into the hair and then textures lightly at angles out to the side of my head, just like you showed. I love my hair and in the thirteen years that I’ve trusted her with my hair, I only had to use someone else once in a pinch when she was sick and I had a reunion. This was back in May of this year, and I’m still trying to recover, lol. Thanks, I’m going to be binge watching your vids til way too late in the night to see what else I need to know 😃
You popped up in my feed today and as a stylist I agree 100%. Having the experience and ability to communicate to clients is everything. Thanks for the language. I tell clients “we just make it look easy.”
I agree! I loved all the rock and roll cuts, I’m wearing one right now, lol! My hair is wavy, and I love the way it falls with that “disconnect” layering.
She is incredibly beautiful. Anything she wants to do with her hair will work. Kind of a waste when the comparison can’t compete with a beautiful smile.
Yes. I have very tricky hair: very wavy on one side and considerably straighter on the other. I have a side part on the straighter side, and I keep that side a bit shorter as it hangs a bit lower. I don't like blow drying or using a curling iron or curlers. It has to look natural without a lot of products.
Menopause needs to be brought into consideration… big time layering and thinning in my styles since hot flashes started… still want long hair and don’t want to wear a ponytail or bun head all the time… short layers on top in the back help you get volume for different styles… but good point to be careful about a mullet!!!!
I gotta admit that I “rocked” the 80’s Sassoon cut. Heavy straight bangs with a shoulder length blunt cut. I loved that hair cut. Crazy thing is as many times as I’ve tried to get that same cut since then has failed .😅 so I have stopped trying. Now it is almost waist length with more glitter highlights(gray strands) appearing every year😂
You are so right. I found the back of my hair was layered and looked great but front had no connection to back other than Farrah feathering on sides. Growing out the sides . Then start looking again at your videos for style.Turning the big 70 in Sept. I don't look like it and want to keep my med length hair. No old lady cuts for me!! THank you for always teaching us how to take control of our style. Your the best!!! Thsnk you!!
Seriously? They look dated and like mullets. I’m a hairstylist and he is spot on as to what he is talking about. I just moved to Tucson as a hairstylist and I keep seeing clients with these horrible disconnected haircuts that looks like the 70’s all those layers look terrible like they are wearing two different haircuts
The best. I needed this. I didn’t know what to do.? I saw what wasn’t looking right.12:54 Where to go and how do I begin to 12:54 explain to a hairstylist what I want.? I’ve considered cutting my own hair. Saying lots lots of prayer. Your the best. You get me. You are a true treasure to your profession. Blessings CeliaG
Yes it all made sense! I am extremely happy that I found you!!!!!! I agree with each and every point that you made. I have thin fine hair and it's a challenge to say the least to find someone who knows how to "deal" with my hair. I actually have to "teach" the hair stylists what to do and what not to do--it's not an easy task since I am NOT a hair stylist. Thank you!
Love your videos Justin. Would you consider a video addressing fine and frizzy hair that is difficult to manage when humid. Also, types of straightening treatments. I have a Brazilian cacau treatment every 6 months. It works, but I wonder if I'm doing damage having this done. Thanks and keep up the great work 😊 Sue
I wonder if people realize what all goes into creating a great hairstyle for people. Their basic hair, their height and weight, their lifestyle ( and what they will do to maintain it), what they want, versus what is possible with their hair….I considered every haircut I did a work of art. Communication with the client is key. And to explain what won’t work for them, and why
It is extremely difficult to find a stylist like that. I have found most stylist, at best, can do one hairstyle well. And they just do that style - usually Rachel from friends in the 90s - no matter what you say. And that is best case scenario.
I have found most stylist don't take into consideration your hair texture (ie: naturally coarse or fine, whether its naturelly straight, wavy, or curly, etc...). They also don't ever ask about your styling abilities & how much time you want to spend trying to style. They all want to cut my hair as if its straight & not coarse, & that I actually have skills/abilities with a blow dryer & **want** to blow dry & iron my hair 🙄
All of this makes sense. I have learned so much from your channel. I have one of the hair styles that is not recommended… It is a longer mullet kind of style, which is a little straggly on the ends. I finally found someone who does razor cuts. I have been looking for that for 15 years with no luck until now. I am in my mid 50s, but somehow this style rocks on me. For the first time in my life, I am getting compliments! I cannot tell you how many bad haircuts I have had in my life. SO MANY. I even got a compliment from my hairstylist friend (I have learned not to mix friendship with business, so I have not gone to her, but it was a great confirmation!) So Justin is right that it really all depends on the person’s personal style.
I totally agree about not mixing friendship with business (at least when it comes to hair). A friend was excited about moving on to a new salon after years of being unhappy at her old one. When I booked an appointment with her, she was thrilled. She gave me a great cut, HOWEVER, the assistant who washed my hair was in a pissy mood and threw a wet towel on my face. That was so inappropriate, unprofessional, and downright nasty. Plus I wear contact lens, and she could have hurt my eye. I said nothing because I was shocked. It put a bad taste in my mouth and I never went back to the salon.
@@BeYounique...Maryanne I am sorry to hear you had such a horrible experience. However, I would definitely have mentioned the incident to your friend. Maybe this was a one-off incident or perhaps this is normal behavior for the assistant and needs to be addressed. Also, not letting your friend know what happened may leave her thinking you were dissatisfied with her service, when in fact you were. I think it would be a good thing to share your experience with her since the assistant may be doing the same or worse to many clients and that is a problem for the clients and the people who work there - your friend already lost you as a client because of this incident. Just a thought.
Loved your valuable expertise and advice! I'm over 60 and have thin hair. I do best with the lift and some curl I get from layering. Then my hair doesn't look lifeless and flat. And when there's gentle blending with bangs into the layering, it looks more graceful for my face. Great inspiration!
Agreed. I want to be able to rock those loose, shaggy short looks, but I get a reality check when I look back at styles I’ve tried over the years. Everything from a pixie, to Beatles bowl cut, to long layers and waist length hair… it seems like choosing the right shapes, lines, & focus means more than the hair style. I have been for focused on style (Bob or shag) and not focused on what the shape and lines are emphasizing. Probably not a great candidate for a messy shag & probably not the right shape for me. I’m still on the hunt.
You nailed it on the head! It’s really easy to want to dictate your hairstyle by styles you see, and like, but working around your hair, texture and face shape is huge! If you can figure out a way to marry those two along with a style you like then you are really in good shape!
Very enjoyable, I learned things about layering that I’d never considered. I like that you are creative and can make exceptions to the rules. Thank you!
You asked what we want to see. I would love to see some hair with texture/waves/curls in the examples shown with all of the different hair cuts and such. I have a daughter with very curly hair, one with curly hair and one with some texture-y waves. My hair is soft waves. I know (oh, how I know) that showing hair with actual texture/waves/curls is difficult to find online and such, but it would sure be helpful. I understand, straight hair is easier to show off cuts/styles, but it's like very thin models showing clothes. Nice but not necessarily beneficial for everyone. Thank you for all of the effort you put into your content.
This was pretty good info, thank you. Makes me remember a couple of these I had and that they didn't work for the reasons you stated. I would like to to mention one hairstyle that not EVERYONE should wear: parted right straight down the middle. Just not flattering on everyone and all face shapes or ages. I'll be so glad when that trend is over. It's way too cookie cutter and again, doesn't do justice to many otherwise pretty faces (too harsh!). Thanks Justin!
It's important to be able to communicate to our hairdresser what you want in a haircut. You have given us not only the concepts but the language. Makes perfect sense structurally.
Absolute true what you are saying. It’s key to any haircut. As a hairstylist I can’t help seeing these faults myself. You are an excellent stylist keep helping people feel and look good about themselves.👍🥂
I really wish you would do something for those of us who have curly hair and don’t want to straighten it. All the hairstyles are for straight hair. It is a struggle for those of us who prefer to keep our curls.
You just explained so many consultation points in a very articulate manner. It really is the person wearing it, the trends as they come and go, and principles of cutting that have to be considered. 👏🏻
This video is "Justin" time! I'm getting my haircut this Saturday and we will be discussing my bangs and the layering! I have a high-ish forehead and I really love bangs! Except for the part where they get caught in my glasses 😮. Anyway, I will be sure to use these tips when I talk to my hair stylist! Thank you for the hints and ideas!❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤ I love and adore your channel! Your cute wife, pups, the great outdoors…. But most of all your spirit … you love people and want them to feel great about themselves…. Having your hair on point is a great start!!! ❤❤❤ thanks for all your ❤love time & effort. Your expertise is priceless!😊
Part of what is so helpful to me (this video) is the vocabulary. How to articulate to a stylist what you want to happen with your hair. Thank you for that.
I think I would find it easier to follow along with side-by-side images of what works and doesn't work. (So instead of showing five that don't work and five that do, showing one that doesn't work and the way to correct that mistake, etc.) Love your content. Just tossing in my two cents.
I just discovered you today, 11/26/23 I think you are awesome and incredibly informative. I I became a cosmetologist in 1990. Worked in a salon for 15 years. Once I started having babies I loved and have not returned. I am now 53. I cut my families hair and a few friends in but definitely need a lot of refreshers on cuts, styles, color, latest trends, etc. I will be binge watching all of your videos today. Again, you do a fantastic job man splaning everything lol. Thank you. Lisa
HAHA! Thank you Lisa! I appreciate the feedback and support! I hope my video help a bit but I'm sure after working in a salon for 15 years, there's a lot you could teach me as well!
I really need to proofread my voice to text…. Once I started having babies I stopped working in Salon. I guess you get the gist of the message lol thank you again.
Thank you for this awesome video! You explain proportion and technique so well! I am kind of ocd about having my layers connected and flowing especially in the bang area....Thanks to you Justin, i am now using the right terms to ask for and my haircuts are so much better! I don't dread the texturizing cuts now.
No, you didn't sound like you were begging for compliments. This video opened my eyes to layers and why some hairstyles just don't look good. I appreciate your information so much and will apply it to my own hair! Thank you! 🌻
You are very cute!!! I believe you did not insult anyone’s hair cut. You seemed to show different ideas that absolutely make sense on different faces and different woman’s styles. Good job and a super aesthetic presentation. I could listen to you all day long.
I’ve had some absolute howlers of hair cuts in the past. 😂 some literally have looked like they were cut with a knife and fork! For anyone struggling with layers putting a bend in them with hair straighteners can disguise some of the straggly bits. I learned the hard way😢
Great video, loved seeing the examples and the analysis of them. Also appreciated you showing people who can break the "rules", sometimes it can just sound like an expert is trying to not hurt people's feelings when they say "But if you love these, of course keep doing them". Of coures you don't want to make someone feel bad, but there are always some people that can pull things off.
WOW! Such a helpful video for me! I had to laugh at myself because all the pictures I used to bring to my hairstylist are the ones you showed at the beginning. 😂 I definitely see the difference now, and I am learning a lot from you! Thank you.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad I could help with this. You’re not alone, sometimes a picture can look great, but it might be tough to realize how much better it could even look. Hopefully I am helping people understand the differences. I’m really glad that this is helping you a bit and I really appreciate you hanging out with me!
I totally agree with your analysis and at the end of the video, with the fact that the hairstyle HAS to fit the "vibe" of the wearer. Thank you for all of your interesting videos!
Had a thought for a possible video topic: hair for your personality style. Might be cool to get some opinions on what might suit a free spirited type, or a bookish type, a professional office vibe, vs. hippie style, etc.. I know that’s very subjective; however, there are factors like convenience or practicality, or just what a hair style is communicating upon a first impression. While shape, texture and color dictate some hairstyles over others, it could be helpful/fun to have a few examples of hair types for life styles and what they say (strong, weak, approachable, high maintenance, casual or carefree). I know that’s a lot of opinion based stuff- but we’re online for many opinions & thats why we like your channel, you give it to us strait. 👍🏻
I like the gray shoulder length with bangs style @7:56 (left); it’s natural and playful. The longer style (right) looks less flattering and like she’s trying too hard to look young.
Does anyone remember the “cap cut” from the early ‘80s? The stylist cut the top part shorter than the rest of the hair and, depending on what you wanted, left the rest of the hair longer. I loved it. It took care of the volume I needed on top ( because I have a round face with a small forehead), and leaving the length with minimal layers took care of not having width at the sides. It made my face look slimmer. I wish I had the courage to try this again.
What fun! Thank you. I get what you're talking about. I think a major factor in whether a cut&style works for me or not is if it works with curly and thinning hair. The styles you showed at the end of this video were both on women who I think have naturally curly hair. I like both those styles, but the brunette at the end is probably closest to what works for me. Everything else you said so makes sense. Kudos!
I don't wear makeup and I've had the same hairstyle for over 40 years... so why do I spend so much time watching this channel and Wayne Goss? Something about attractive men my age who are better at girly things than I am - and are so smart and gentle about it - is just so fascinating to me, I guess 😂.
If you've had the same haircut for 40 years and have no intention of changing it Why are you watching a video on haircutting ? Then to top things off you leave a snarky comment Why not just go watch a funny Cat video or something ?
Spot on! I had a very bad haircut 1.5 years ago. My layers are still too short. No one knows how to cut hair these days except Justin. If you live in Denver and love your stylist, please share.
I love your attention to detail. Thats why I respect professionalism. Someone who watches their craft so closely that they see what id like to see but cant. I absolutely got heaps out if this. That explains that stringy, scraggy look that so often happens. Which i cant stand frankly-not for myself. To me ot sucks the life out if a hairstyle anc drags it to the ground. I want to shorten and shoulder-length my hair. That first example, -THAT is going with me to the hairdressers. Thank you very much
Love your videos, and I'm learning a lot. Most importantly, I have learned how to tell my stylist what I want. I think most of my bad haircuts were due to miscommunication. Maybe a video on that would be good?
I used to have a hair stylist who held my hair up, and cut it like you did in the first explanation and I always got the best compliments, but all the rest since have held it out like you said, and my hair has never looked the same, I so appreciate this, I am going to send it to my stylist, thanks!
You’re so cute and humble while giving these tips! I love it. Makes me feel less intimidated to hear and learn how to do our hair in a friendly and warm way. Very genuine. Thank you!! And it all makes total sense. I love how you show examples at the end of how some do break the rules and it works great still! Love it all.❤
I once had a hair stylist that I could just say "make me a new woman" to her. I would sit in her chair, close my eyes & totally relax. When I saw it in the mirror, it was always fabulous! Unfortunately she was renovating her house, & accidentally cut off the fingers, on one hand. That was that. She was an artist for sure. That was 30 years ago and I have never found anyone else like her. 😟 If you're still out there Donna, I still miss you 😢
Very helpful. I've become leery of layers but I'm still considering getting curtain bangs. If I do, I'll be sure to ask that they be connected to the rest of my hair. Thanks for the tips!
I don’t blame you, Larin can be your best friend or your worst enemy! If you do curtain bangs, make sure you like the idea of the center part, and that it works for your face shape and hair texture. If not curtain bangs can be a struggle for people.
It has been really difficult to communicate effectively to a hairdresser what exactly I have ever wanted. Lacking the right vocabulary and a little shyness or intimidation has always gotten in the way. Your videos really dispel some of the issues. I usually cut my own hair, and your guidance is really so helpful! Reassuring! The last two cuts that ‘break’ the layering rules do NOT appeal to me - don’t seem to really work. They look way too shaggy, stringy and a bit too fussy and labor intensive to achieve and maintain the rather intended wind blown or messy look. It truly is quite a dance of grace and elegance and expertise to watch you bring about the best hair design and cut every time! Since the pandemic I have let my hair grow long and longer! Gradually I am allowing the natural ‘halo’ of silvery tendrils frame my otherwise light to medium brown locks. Now…I love the trailing length, but question how much if any trimming - yearly - will not compromise the romance I am having with long hair!
Agree - this video is also really useful if you've got an idea what style you want, then you can look at a hairstylist's work with a more discerning eye so you know what your looking for and you can see what they've done previously. I'm pretty sure that most stylists have certain go-to ways of cutting and especially with newer less classic styles some stylists just wouldn't know where to start, might try and give you what you want but without experience its really hit & miss. Obviously it depends on the individual stylists skills, education, continuing training, era, analytical skills, experience with your hair type etc.
I think many of the “cuts” that layer short at the crown and back are created by chemical damage from over-processing highlights or other hair treatments.
Thank you for this video. Right on time. I have thick curly hair, but when I wear it straight, it’s nice. I’m wearing a shoulder length bob right now but I’ve been debating on having my hairdresser take out the bulk from the bottom of the bob. It’s too thick in that area. It’s either that or long layer the bob.🤷🏻♀️
You can definitely take Buck out of the bottom if you’re wearing it curly or wavy. If you remove bulk, just ensure that you don’t remove too much around the ears were in front of the ears is that’s where I can start to get almost thin looking.
Thank you! I had the worse haircut two months ago. I couldn't point why I dislike it so much. It has all the five mistakes you show us! Now I will cut the bottom two layers at least, hope that will help with the boxy look too.
@@freiheithoechstesgut4043 , I don’t know. Somewhere where it’s green and forresty because he’s always filming in those places. Washington State maybe, or Oregon? 🤷🏻♀️
I've been trying to find someone to cut my hair like this for years. Very hard to describe to someone and have done. Thanks for the photos and descriptions
Let’s face the truth here It is extremely difficult to find a true hairdresser who is professional. Just find me one in NC and I’ll be calling them tomorrow
Thank you! Of course it make sense. I cut my hair very short because I didn’t know what you just explained. I want a medium length, and now I know what to ask for. Thanks again!
Ok so how do I find a stylist?? I have spent so much money and tried different people but apparently no one knows how to cut wavy hair, and they all want to do a blowout even when I tell them not to. Plus they’re afraid of doing anything different 😤
Great video! I’m sure someone has already stated this, but I’m posting anyway. #1 How do we tell our stylist to “cut my hair this way please?” It’s hard to find a good hair stylist that is good at cutting AND coloring hair. Even harder to find one in semi-rural areas.
@Justin, Have you ever considered a service where you charge someone for sending in a pic and you recommending a hairstyle and color for them and their hair? I would totally pay big for that.
Did this all make sense?
Absolutely. I had one of these issues; that scrappy business at the bottom compliments of a stylist who over layered my already thinnish hair and cut too far back from my ears. (maybe noticeable in my pic)
I consulted with a new stylist who is super talented. Since you can't ADD back length 😁, she created a blunt chin length bob that made my hair look full, healthy and amazing.
Definitely!
BTW, you are a treasure ❤
Thank you for your time and passion. You are truly valued and appreciated.
YEAH 🎉 Perfect Sense!
Technical formulas and explanations.
I would also like more advice on a Shaggy cut (never a mu😂🤣et )
Thanks Justin
I swear I have never had a great haircut. No matter how much I have paid.
Is it bc the haircuts doesn't suit/compliment your face shape? Just trying to help.
More likely because my hair is very curly and frizzy and it’s really difficult to manage and it isn’t long so options are limited. I let them do what they want. 🤷🏼♀️
I have 3 kinds of hair , straight on top, wavy on the sides and curly in the back .
Manes by Mel is a channel specifically for curly hair. Check out her stuff.
SAAAAME
Holy moly, noch mehr Regulierungen. Ich schneide mein Haare selbst und seit dem bin ich endlich zufrieden.
Your spot on.. my last haircut looks like 2 haircuts in one.. hate it. It’s disconnected. Fine hair has to have long layers or none.. So disappointing always waiting for my hair to grow out because the stylist has no sense of style!!
I have the two hair cut in one. horrible!!!!! I hate it too.
did it grow out?
This is exactly what I just got I'm so upset. How long did it take you to grow it back ?
Wish I could find someone with this level of expertise on curly hair.
Me too!
maybe go and look at manes by mell, she is curly hair specialist on youtube:)
Same! I’m at wit’s end, thinking that, because of my horrid hair, there is no “best cut” for me! Is it finally wig time?!
Same!
I never knew about the fact that there are styling rules or truths and also that you can take a hair cut and personalize it to the individual by cutting in volume in specific places all the while adhering to guidelines about where in the head layers should begin or end (i.e in front of the ears etc.)
Great video so informative!
I’ve been cutting my own hair since this whole covid thing began. I do not miss it. Hair is hair 🤷🏼♀️
Yes. Its an art and a science.
.
Unfortunately many stylists should be watching these videos. When you try to find a good stylist, many times you come out looking like an Amish boy
Oh BTW my friend was the singer of the opening band for JJ way back and when they were in Japan she saw JJ sitting at the bar and asked her how she was doing and JJ said, “I would feel better if you got the F away from me.”
So not a big fan of her.
I would let you cut my hair ANY DAY! You know what you’re talking about and I’m so glad you pointed out that some women can even rock a wrong style if it’s on the right person! 🙌🙌
Please show more of the "right way to do it" and less of the "wrong way"
Finally, someone who understands layering! I've only had ONE stylist who didn't make it too thin at the bottom.
Wow👍
Same!
Mir ging es auch so
In der lockdown Zeit habe ich meine Haare geschnitten
Früher auch manchmal.
Ich wurde gefragt welcher Friseur. Wo ich hingehe.
Das war Gott
Zufall?
Thanks!
Thank YOU! I truly appreciate that support! Hope you're having an amazing weekend!
Crazy good! Watching you has made me realize I’ve had some really bad haircuts over the years. Thankfully I’ve found a stylist that knows me and my hair well. We work well together keeping me from getting carried away with something that won’t work for me. Thanks for sharing all your tips and tricks.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad I can help! I’m stoked that you found an awesome stylist, it’s such a big deal! I appreciate the support!
Where is the stylist from ? Thank you
Thank you for helping us older ladies know how to wear our hair.
I like the layered styles, even short on top.
Would luv to c u do a curly girl bangs video. Bangs on curls r complicated, but us curlys deserve to have that option too! There has to be a way to make em work without adding a ton of maintenance! Would luv to c your take on it!
I hear ya! I definitely will be creating more curly hair Contant this year! You are correct, they’re absolutely an option for curly girls!
@@justinhickox I would love more natural wave or curly hair styles! It’s always a bit challenging not to walk out being a triangle head! 😂
I loved all but one of your "bad" examples! I love lots of layers, but not too long. Oh well, to each his own.
I think your educated opinions are right on! All the wrong haircuts remind me of my small hometown where people don't have much better to do than to go to the "beauty shop."
😂😂
I wish they would teach new hair stylists all the important tips you mentioned in this video. Thank you for these helpful suggestions.
I had the Carol Brady and it was the absolute best hair I had in my life.
Carol Brady? Hm? I have to Google that one.
I actually liked all those hairstyles that you were criticizing.
Right? especially that cute blond one at the beginning. Super sweet!
I agree! I loved all the rock and roll cuts, I’m wearing one right now, lol! My hair is wavy, and I love the way it falls with that “disconnect” layering.
Me too. I think he’s FOS.
She is incredibly beautiful. Anything she wants to do with her hair will work. Kind of a waste when the comparison can’t compete with a beautiful smile.
Please include naturally wavy/curly hair in your examples on these videos.
Yes. I have very tricky hair: very wavy on one side and considerably straighter on the other. I have a side part on the straighter side, and I keep that side a bit shorter as it hangs a bit lower. I don't like blow drying or using a curling iron or curlers. It has to look natural without a lot of products.
Basically, if you drop get dead, gorgeous, you can wear your hair anyway you want to and it will look great.
Makeup
Menopause needs to be brought into consideration… big time layering and thinning in my styles since hot flashes started… still want long hair and don’t want to wear a ponytail or bun head all the time… short layers on top in the back help you get volume for different styles… but good point to be careful about a mullet!!!!
I gotta admit that I “rocked” the 80’s Sassoon cut. Heavy straight bangs with a shoulder length blunt cut. I loved that hair cut. Crazy thing is as many times as I’ve tried to get that same cut since then has failed .😅 so I have stopped trying. Now it is almost waist length with more glitter highlights(gray strands) appearing every year😂
I think your spot on more hair dressers need your expertise and knowledge of face framing. Instead of everyone being a basic cut
Thsnk you!!
To be honest... I actually love every style he says we should avoid
me too
Me too
I saw a few that he said not to do that I really loved
Me too and the ones ge recommends look like bag ladies. HORRIBLE!
Loved your advise and it does make sense! 😊I definitely think the last 2 ladies rocked the look and they are the exception to the rule.
Exactly! I totally agree, people definitely can be an exception to these rules!
SO MANY. I even got a compliment from my hairstylist friend (I have learned not to mix friendship with business, so I have not gone to her, but it was a great confirmation!)
So Justin is right that it really all depends on the person’s personal style.
Could you do a video recommending hair styles for women with small heads and delicate facial features?
Definitely a great idea for a future video! I’ll keep it in mind for sure. Thank you so much for that!
You’re so welcome! I’m so glad that this came at the right time. I really hope it helps for your haircut! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out!
Oh my gosh! This is my dilemma too and I'm getting my hair cut on Friday!
I hope your hair turns out fabulous 😊
I hate the stray hairs stuck in my glasses!
You are the first hairdresser who are just explain what you are doing...and what clients wanted wrong! Great 👍 👌
❤❤❤❤❤❤ I love and adore your channel!
(So instead of showing five that don't work and five that do, showing one that doesn't work and the way to correct that mistake, etc.)
Love your content.
Thank you! 🌻
There are no stylists anywhere near me who have a single clue about any of this!
You must 😂😂live in Australia .. shocking!!
I learned the hard way😢
Oh my goodness, this story tore at my heart. Thank goodness you found each other.
Yes! This is very helpful. My stylist I have now is fabulous. She listens. She works with me. I love how my hair looking. (currently a copper color)
This was great Justin! I am fighting a bad haircut with NO layers! The opposite all bulk with my thick curly hair.
I like the gray shoulder length with bangs style @7:56 (left); it’s natural and playful. The longer style (right) looks less flattering and like she’s trying too hard to look young.
I think l love you. As a professional hairstylist and former Redken guest artist, you are very concise and easy to follow. Thank you.
Worth a try.
Maybe try a wig similar in the style you describe and see if you still like it.
Yes! I call this the rock n roll haircut. Do it!!
Basically David Bowie in the Labyrinth!
What fun!
Ditto. Finding a good stylist is hard.
I appreciate your explanations why a style works or fails. My bad haircuts were always linked to my inability to describe what I want w/o a photo.
Wow. How I wish all stylists had your skill.
I once had a hair stylist LITERALLY run away sobbing when she was confronted with my “hair.” Who else can boast to have suffered such humiliation? 😏
The one at the end with the dark hair doing all of the wrong things looks amazing! She does rock it. I love haircuts like that.
It’s so much harder with curly hair to get it right. It’s either too thin on the bottom or too bulky .
Thank you!
I had the worse haircut two months ago. I couldn't point why I dislike it so much. It has all the five mistakes you show us! Now I will cut the bottom two layers at least, hope that will help with the boxy look too.
Would love more curly hair styles included with the straight/wavies.
Thanks for explaining the aspects of layering that I see ...yet haven't really seen ( and understood) until you made it clear. Appreciate your videos.
I sure wish I lived in the city where Justin has his hair salon! I’d definitely go to him.
Where is he located?
How about getting a dry cut that follows your waves?
Great video! I’m sure someone has already stated this, but I’m posting anyway. #1 How do we tell our stylist to “cut my hair this way please?” It’s hard to find a good hair stylist that is good at cutting AND coloring hair. Even harder to find one in semi-rural areas.
@Justin, Have you ever considered a service where you charge someone for sending in a pic and you recommending a hairstyle and color for them and their hair? I would totally pay big for that.
I would also do this!
