Some of my friends have bad eye-sight and it really stops them from learning Thai, they just can't read it.

I studied spoken Thai for 5 years painstakingly (by my self) before kicking it off with the script and here's my only tip for foreigners trying to learn Thai: START WITH THE SCRIPT! Trust me it makes a huge difference on how fast you learn the language.
I'm half Thai, moved away when I was young so I can speak broken Thai and understand more but not to a high level. How did you go about learning the script? I feel like it would make a huge difference if I could actually vocalise written Thai?
@@connorkapooh2002 Just multiple online using teaching videos. There's A LOT of memorizing regarding rules and stuff but once you just get a grasp of the basics you already have the building blocks for the rest. For me, as a Finnish person studying Thai in English i found the most difficult part to be trying to get a grasp of the transliteration in English. But when i started studying the script i understood how the sounds work (and also that we have the same vowels in Finnish, minus the tonality and throaty/nasal aspects) and that the consonants aren't just K, G, T like in English but that there are multiple different soundings to them that have different rules and meanings when paired with one another. ok i made this sound a lot more complicated than it is... The thing that takes the most time is memorizing which class a consonant is (thus which tone the word is said in when there is no tone marking above the letter). Just look out any tutorials. The one that cracked it for me is Thaipod101 on RUclips. Good luck! You already know the language (even if it is broken) so you'll get a grasp of it in no time!

@@connorkapooh2002 use the old Manee and Friends textbooks and flash cards for vowels consonants and tone diacritic rules. I taught my half Thai son to read and write this way

For me, speaking, reading and writing Thai is one way to show respect for this wonderful place and I feel that the foreign community could do a better job of honoring Thai culture. So I say, "good for you!" for wanting to learn Thai! Classroom learning is my favorite because you can meet new friends. I also have a tutor who I meet online that I would recommend.
As a Thai person, it's nice to see foreigners or just other people try to learn our language. It's really hard and even I sometimes struggle to read some of the words. Also, I actually went to that store with my parents many times. I was thinking why the surroundings were looking so strange and familiar.
Hey Paddy you encouraged me to start learning thai again. I've been married to a Thai woman for 6 years and this year in Thailand I could see how disappointed the mother was that I still don't understand her. I have taken many of your tips to heart and will practice a lot with your videos and my wife.
Paddy, you have so much good lesson material in your speech for those of us learning to speak Thai. How about an epilogue in your videos where you go over some key phrases and vocabulary to explain word usage, sentence structure. Or alternatively having it as a stand alone video. I know I like to learn Thai by watching casual conversation with subtitles and essentially 'copying' phraseology but in Thai we know it's not that easy because of various reasons. Consider it!

Interesting experiment, although i think for most european/american/australian people, it will be just a little bit too hard. Just because of most people only learn to speak words and sentences in Thai language. Try the same experiment with some sentences on some farang and you will see different answers. Lao has a lot fewer exceptions than Thai and fewer different letters that make the same sound, so it's like Thai but more logical and therefore easier.
I have been in Thailand for 4 months going on 5, and my ability to read Thai is non-existent. Apart from English (obviously), the fact that Thai uses an alphabetical writing system is actually one of the hard parts for me as I only know Chinese characters and the Roman alphabet. The whole idea of marking vowels and consonants on top or below other vowels and consonants is completely foreign to me, along with some words having weird rules about silent vowels / consonants where you still have to put something down. In a general sense, despite being a tonal language, Thai belongs to a completely different family than the Sino-Tibetan languages and is also less influenced by Chinese (more by Indian, Khmer and even English / European languages) than something like Vietnamese. I can guess the meanings of some Viet words because they’re so similar to Chinese, but can’t really do that for Thai as many Thai words have Khmer / Sanskrit / Western roots. Ironically, the fact that Thai contains so many loanwords is also one of the harder parts for me. They’re well, English but not really English. Chinese but not really Chinese. If I say them in their proper pronunciations I’ll more than likely not be understood. Thai in my opinion is also not a very “logical” / “straightforward” language compared to Chinese. It feels very roundabout when the same concept or the same message I’m trying to convey could be said in only a few words in Chinese. Chinese might be the exception in terms of its directness, so when I’m picking up Thai, it’s hard for me to mentally get into the mode that something needs to be expressed in a more “gentle” and indirect way. For example, “can you eat xxx food” in Thai would need to be answered as “gin dai” (can eat). In Chinese I could say “可以吃” (can eat), but a lot of times we simply say “吃” (eat) as the affirmative.
I actually find your statement intriguing. I've always thought that Chinese speakers shouldn't have hard time learning Thai, compared to the Europeans. Yes, many loanwords are from Khmer, Pali, and Sanskrit but most basic expressions derived from similar "sentiment" to Chinese, although not the same or similar words to Chinese. In fact, most Thais have fewer difficulties learning Chinese (apart from reading and writing), compared to when they learn other European languages. Not to mention the tones, Thais can easily master it. I'm Thai myself and used to learn mandarin. After just 6 months I already felt comfortable conversing in basic mandarin (more than tourist survival phrases).
I feel so ashamed as I don't know one symbol in their language....it just looks so difficult as the script is different and there are so spaces. Just looks like something from a different planet. It is amazing that you mastered it. The Thai people love the fact that a foreigner learned their language.
Hey Dan. I totally get how daunting Thai script looks. And yet I'd still encourage you to take your first reading and writing class. Pausing Paddy's video and reading his sign is incredibly satisfying. You can get there. I mean if I can (and I'm crap with language) I think you can for sure! For anyone wondering, Thai is very hard to read. I'm presently trying for the second time, but I've actually been in Thailand twice in the last five months.
To be honest, it's not that hard. I lived in Thailand for 11 months already and i can speak and read, but write just a little (can do it on phone pretty fast). I was always wondering why Thais think my Thai skill is good, because i always feel like it's pretty bad and switching to english can be required in long dialogs, but - "คุณพูดภาษาไทเก่งมักครับ/คะ". Looking at these farangs who live here so long, but don't bother learning Thai now answers all my questions. When i first heard Paddy talk about learning Thai, he said it took 8 months to become fluent for him, and i agree. I actually was studying hard for first half of year, but after that it just snowballs by itself. When i discuss languages with Thais, we agree that Russian is harder to learn/master than Thai.
Good fun! But it just proves the point that very few Farangs can read or even speak Thai. Not expecting much from tourists though, but those who live in the country should at least give it a go 😉
Plenty of farangs can speak and read Thai to an advanced level, but have taken their western ways with them to Thailand and do not interact with anyone who is not in their close circle of friends or colleagues. Bangkok expats especially are an anti-social bunch who mostly wouldn't give each other the light of day. I'd say some Thai speaking farangs must have passed Paddy and totally ignored him, not taking the time to read the sign.
If only foreigners know the secret of the Thai letter, studying Thai will be a breeze. Thai language is different from English in a way that you all would learn English by first listening ,and speaking , and later on, if any, reading and then writing. But if you are not born here in Thailand, the best way to learn the Thai language is imho to learn the alphabet first. They look terrifying at first but give a month try and then you will realize they so easy to grasp. Learning how to speak Thai without learning the alphabet will later on give you nothing to reinforce on and thus eventually forgetting most of the words.
Not quite. I'm a language enthusiast and know half a dozen alphabets and I've been to Thailand at least six or seven times and I still struggle to read Thai. Some of the letters have similar shapes and some letters are quite rare but look similar to common letters, some fonts have really different shapes and it's hard to figure out what letter it is, and the spelling is quite tricky, but of course more logical than English. And then trying to work out what tone to pronounce for each syllable is something I haven't even began to master. For comparison, learning to read Korean took maybe one hour and learning to read Georgian took two days, maybe three. But Thai is easier to read for me than Tibetan or Mongolian at least (-:
@@andrewdunbar828 you may be right cause I don't know Korean or other language I only know English, chinese and Thai (i'm native Thai). But give it a month try and you may be surprised. After you feel at ease with the Thai alphabets, the way they join to make word and form pronunciation is automatically intuitive. Cheers.

@@planb2504 Actually I've tried children's materials for language learning before thinking it would be great because children by definition are learning and the vocabulary will be limited and sentences will be simple. But it turns out children's material tends to be too repetitive for adults, there tends to be vocabulary that's fun for kids but not something you'd use often, farm animals is one example. Overall most is not engaging enough to keep an adult interested. This is my general observation that I'm saying before I watch the video you link, which I will do now (-:
The biggest thing I miss about dating an asian girl is going to an asian markets being completely clueless. Helping out the best that I could, which wasn't much.
Good video, my only suggestion would have been to have the large sign shown to the camera at the beginning of the video without you reading it to us. That way "we at home" could have had a chance to try our reading skills. (The "struggling, struggling" moment was close but blurry).
Was interesting to see something different. I would love to try this myself in Bangkok but as a hopeless introvert holding any sign in public would make me feel like Bruce Willis's character holding a sign in Die Hard 3.

I feel so ashamed as I don't know one symbol in their language....it just looks so difficult as the script is different and there are so spaces. Just looks like something from a different planet. It is amazing that you mastered it. The Thai people love the fact that a foreigner learned their language.
Hey Dan. I totally get how daunting Thai script looks. And yet I'd still encourage you to take your first reading and writing class. Pausing Paddy's video and reading his sign is incredibly satisfying. You can get there. I mean if I can (and I'm crap with language) I think you can for sure! For anyone wondering, Thai is very hard to read. I'm presently trying for the second time, but I've actually been in Thailand twice in the last five months.
Thai is one of the easiest languages to learned. Same concept as English..just sounding the consonents out. The vowels are even simpler.
@@ThannyCamb I've never seen the vowels come before the consonants when their sound comes after the consonants in English.

Ya i think thai language is easy for speaking but reading and writing are most hard one.
To be honest, it's not that hard. I lived in Thailand for 11 months already and i can speak and read, but write just a little (can do it on phone pretty fast). I was always wondering why Thais think my Thai skill is good, because i always feel like it's pretty bad and switching to english can be required in long dialogs, but - "คุณพูดภาษาไทเก่งมักครับ/คะ".
Looking at these farangs who live here so long, but don't bother learning Thai now answers all my questions.
When i first heard Paddy talk about learning Thai, he said it took 8 months to become fluent for him, and i agree. I actually was studying hard for first half of year, but after that it just snowballs by itself.
When i discuss languages with Thais, we agree that Russian is harder to learn/master than Thai.
Good fun! But it just proves the point that very few Farangs can read or even speak Thai.
Not expecting much from tourists though, but those who live in the country should at least give it a go 😉
Plenty of farangs can speak and read Thai to an advanced level, but have taken their western ways with them to Thailand and do not interact with anyone who is not in their close circle of friends or colleagues. Bangkok expats especially are an anti-social bunch who mostly wouldn't give each other the light of day. I'd say some Thai speaking farangs must have passed Paddy and totally ignored him, not taking the time to read the sign.
Most interesting Paddy. I am learning to read Thai right now starting with the consonants. Leaving the vowels and tone marks to later....Yaak !

If only foreigners know the secret of the Thai letter, studying Thai will be a breeze. Thai language is different from English in a way that you all would learn English by first listening ,and speaking , and later on, if any, reading and then writing. But if you are not born here in Thailand, the best way to learn the Thai language is imho to learn the alphabet first. They look terrifying at first but give a month try and then you will realize they so easy to grasp. Learning how to speak Thai without learning the alphabet will later on give you nothing to reinforce on and thus eventually forgetting most of the words.
Not quite. I'm a language enthusiast and know half a dozen alphabets and I've been to Thailand at least six or seven times and I still struggle to read Thai. Some of the letters have similar shapes and some letters are quite rare but look similar to common letters, some fonts have really different shapes and it's hard to figure out what letter it is, and the spelling is quite tricky, but of course more logical than English. And then trying to work out what tone to pronounce for each syllable is something I haven't even began to master. For comparison, learning to read Korean took maybe one hour and learning to read Georgian took two days, maybe three. But Thai is easier to read for me than Tibetan or Mongolian at least (-:
@@andrewdunbar828 you may be right cause I don't know Korean or other language I only know English, chinese and Thai (i'm native Thai). But give it a month try and you may be surprised. After you feel at ease with the Thai alphabets, the way they join to make word and form pronunciation is automatically intuitive. Cheers.

@@planb2504 Actually I've tried children's materials for language learning before thinking it would be great because children by definition are learning and the vocabulary will be limited and sentences will be simple. But it turns out children's material tends to be too repetitive for adults, there tends to be vocabulary that's fun for kids but not something you'd use often, farm animals is one example. Overall most is not engaging enough to keep an adult interested.

Good video, my only suggestion would have been to have the large sign shown to the camera at the beginning of the video without you reading it to us. That way "we at home" could have had a chance to try our reading skills. (The "struggling, struggling" moment was close but blurry).
