Destiny | The Final Review of this Brilliant Mess of a Game (before the release of Destiny 2)

  • Destiny - Games that launch badly might improve, but their review scores will stand as a permanent monument to their initial failings. Destiny's disappointing launch was the start of a 3 year journey that has only recently culminated in the release of the Age of Triumph DLC, and with that release celebrating so much of what made Destiny great, I wanted to go back and review the game as it stands now, so that anyone thinking about jumping into the experience fresh , or ahead of Destiny 2, knows just how much this game has improved since it first entered our lives.
    Ladies and gentleman, I present to you my review, of Destiny.

    Guys, this is the kind of video that doesn't get a lot of likes (40 mins, controversial topic etc) but it's the sort of the content I really enjoy making (long form, scripted, highly edited). If you enjoyed it, I'd really appreciate your hitting the like button on the video- it helps me in a big, big way :)
    Regardless, I hope you enjoyed the video and got something out of it. Destiny is far from perfect, but there's something in it that keeps me and many others coming back. I wanted to tell that story today- I hope I did the true-believers proud :)

    For me, Destiny is like that old friend from high school. Sometimes you'll go ages without seeing each other but when you do finally get together its like you'd never separated. Sometimes you'll have new stories for each other and sometimes you'll just sit there, looking back fondly on times you've spent together in the past. Either way, it's always familiar and always fun :)

      Skill Up tbh, this brought tears to my eyes. Sounds kinda silly, I know, but Destiny has been a very positive piece of a very negative part of my life. It's brought me many friends I never would have met and MANY exciting and fun-filled memories that I'll never forget. Thank u Bungie and thank u SkillUp. This was an amazing vid.

    I'm a day one player.
    I can't begin to describe the countless memorable experiences I've had with this game.
    The friendships I've built while struggling though one of the games many raids. The rage I felt as I struggled to keep my team together during a bad Trials run. The excitement that coursed through my veins when I finally got that one piece of gear I had sought after for what seemed like an eternity. It's almost unbelievable to think that I really have sunk just about three years into the frustrating, unfinished masterpiece.
    I love it.

      My favorite Destiny moment was finally completing WotM for the very first time! I am a Year one player, but only recently obtained the means to communicate with other players. It's the moment that, besides getting the Thorn quest, has stuck with me throughout everything.

      I have legit really good friends now in irl that i met through finding a team for VOG. I will admit im a bit over it now and i would only come back for stints after DLC would come out but the memories I have of when i did play are absolutely irreplaceable. Cant wait for PC D2

      I agree with you, I had no friend on PSN when the game started and now I know a bunch of people, was a real jorney and really a way to realease stress hanging out with friends every night. The only two things I hate about it is that they stole us a lot of money with this DLC thing that you have to buy or stop playing, thank god I have ways to pay less for games but the average D1 gamer has spent $180 for the game, and the fact I gave up on most of the other games because there is always someone that nees help for something.

      Ashton Raymer A lot of complaints of Destiny are focused on the amount of money spent playing it. Yet thinking on the logic suggested by skillup that this is an mmo rpg you may find that the money spent isnt as high as, say paying a monthly fee and purchasing a yearly expansion pack like you would if this game followed the mmo rpg subscription dynamic. Think of it like that and I think we have a fair bit of value for what we have.

      and this comment has 3 likes at the time of me posting. this is the exact reason we keep getting awful day one products. destiny should have failed out the gate and maybe, just maybe, the next time the devs would think twice, but no sir, everyone dishes out that 170 with a smile on their face. your comment reminded me of why I cannot and will not buy destiny 2. destiny was a great end product, but if you keep funding the fools to give you initially terrible products, only to bleed you for 20-40 bucks at a time with only the promise that you might have a good end product, then the only ones you have to blame are yourselves

    • @theevildice83
      @theevildice83 7 лет назад +1

      You've got to remember how much more it costs to make games now, yet we still pay the same price as we did 10-15 years ago, a lot of the time the only way developers can even get a product of this scale out of the door is to rely on further investment from the player-base. With how much more fidelity is required even in simple assets, your £40/$60 doesn't stretch nearly as far. In nearly every other industry, the cost of a product to consumers has gone up 2-3 times, yet game prices have stagnated for over a decade. In my eyes, paying extra for DLC in a game that has potential is less about paying extra for a complete game, it's supporting a game by paying it's current economic value, with the added bonus of extra content.

    • @xtheshredderxx5473
      @xtheshredderxx5473 7 лет назад +6

      The Evil Dice have you ever gone and done the day one sales math for this game alone? with the number of people that bought the game at its lowest initial price, the profit margins would have been incredible. basically, the destiny devs put money only into R&D, employee salary, and advertisement. the actual product itself costs next to nothing to make. take all of the employee numbers that you can find for this game, give them super high salaries for their industry, and throw in however many million for advertisement that you think they made, and just the day one profits alone were monumental. I don't begrudge a company making profit, even a huge one, but I can't stand when people act like destiny is barely getting by. take the highest potential initial cost of destiny (estimated $500,000,000, though bungi says that's way too high) and compare it to the revenue of player numbers (around 30 million) multiplied by the lowest possible price point ($60): to create revenues of at least 1.8 billion ( at the lowest possibly) versus a cost of $500 (at the highest possibility). these numbers don't take into account the continuing cost to develop and maintain destiny, but also doesn't count the people the bought anything other than the bare bones game. also, I used the number of 30 million active players, when then number who bought the game and didn't play could (and would) have been tremendously higher. destiny has never even come close to hurting for money, so don't feed me that bull.

    • @theevildice83
      @theevildice83 7 лет назад

      Just did, assuming all their developers are on an industry average wage, which I'd guess most are above so this is a low estimate, and that the game took 4 years to make and they had 120 staff members... Not even including publishing costs, marketing costs, resource costs, etc. They had to sell nearly 700,000 copies to even break even at $60 a game. So no, the product itself does not cost nothing to make, programming is one of the most highly skilled and best paid professions in the modern industry.

    from a year one player to another i will say thank you for this review. All you ever see is negative reviews of this game in 2014. so when i saw this i was hesitant to click, but we share about 90% of all points of this video. I love this game for a simple reason, it was my first game that i broke 100 hours in. This game helped me forget my stress, depression, and just upright felling useless. Though i gained a game i love, i gained a game i hate to love.

    If only we had appreciated how good we had it back then. Now...
    Destiny 1 content sold back to us with every expansion.
    Constantly reskinned enemies and gear.
    Eververse.
    No more Trials or Factions
    Broken quests
    Even more progression grind
    Still no dedicated servers for pvp
    Emphasis on attracting new players at the expense of Legacy players
    This franchise had so much potential and Bungie blew it. Not Activision. Bungie.

    Unfortunately although the game has been massively improved but it doesn't change the fact that it's taken 3 years and for me personally, £120 pounds to get a complete game I won't deny I enjoy the game but people should not be required to buy DLC to make a game competent, DLC should be an optional enhancement to the game, not a requirement.
    I actually really like this review as it acknowledges the flaws of the game even now but I my should of been great to begin with

    • @XCaptainJelloX

      The problem was Activision basically forced Bungie to make paid DLC, but IIRC Bungo wanted the first two DLCs as part of the vanilla experience.

The sense of community, camaraderie and satisfaction this game has given me over the last three years is unlike anything I've ever played. Destiny 1 was at it's best early on somewhere around the house of wolves DLC. At this time it didn't have the content still but it was the best designed version of itself. The light levels change, the infusions, the new currency, eververse, constant nerfs to boss health, permanent addition of burn modifiers, removal of all the difficulty settings from everything, and continued ever easing of access to powerful loot were not positive changes. Taken King may have given Destiny 1 what it needed the best and biggest chunk of gameplay content added to the game. It also started all the systems that would destroy the game for years to come. After the initial loot changes the game needed content lots of lots of content to make up for the absolutely empty base game... it didn't need a complete revamp setting up the systems for D2.

Seriously other than Overwatch, it's the only game I play. I’ve been through it all with this game, I can’t say I was pleased with its initial release but I can say one thing. The connections, memories, friendships, and accomplishments I’ve made are unforgettable and so I must recognize this game for what it’s done. Yes, upon an initial view of the package we all received wasn’t the best, but that wasn’t what made it special. Think of all those times you’ve had with fellow guardians. Pushing Atheon off the ledge, attempting to solo Crota, attempting to go 9-0, getting up filled with excitement to see what Xur was selling, getting your first legendary/exotic and defending it even if it was garbage, screaming empowered right/left because your so filled with adrenaline and excitement because maybe, just maybe you guys will get the chance to finally complete Wrath of the machine this time, etc. I understand everyone’s experience with this game was different and unique, but I think most of the player base can connect with what I’m trying to say. Thank you, Per Audacia Ad Astra. See you star side.

    This review made me so nostalgic! People like to talk so much smack about Destiny, but some of my best memories in gaming come from playing this game. I only really got into Destiny once the Crota DLC was released. I remember struggling mightily to complete that raid. I was lucky enough to find a group that was willing to carry me. After many attempts, we beat it. Not only did I get a bunch of high-level loot that increased my light level, but I also knew the ins and outs of the raid, which allowed me to help my friends who were also struggling. It got to the point to where I was able to take charge of the Crota battle by being the one to take the sword and pounding the crap out of Crota in few attempts. That feeling of accomplishment was great, and hearing the reactions of lower level players completing the raid for the first time was priceless.
    I also really enjoyed the grind that was Trials of Osiris. So many great PvP memories there. Getting through tough teams and the moment to moment strategizing with the added pressure of competitive play was something I had never experienced in gaming before.
    Yes, Destiny did have a lot of flaws, but it had the potential to truly be the complete package. No other game could make MMO-type and competitive PvP-type games so accessible. Here's hoping Destiny 2 fixes those mistakes and makes a worthy sequel.

  • @AngelosPetropoulos

    In your video the people behind Destiny explained that some of their decisions were based on the type of community and environment they wanted to create within Destiny. They let go of certain good game play opportunities because they didn't want to compromise on their vision: "if you see a guardian your instant reaction is: hey there is someone I can help!". The Division took 100% the opposite approach and based its core game play on player grief creating a toxic environment where everybody is against everybody else. This is why I will never buy another game made by Massive and I will never buy another game that the following directors and designers have been involved in: Magnus Jansén, Julian Gerighty, Ryan Barnard, Matthias Karlson. If you support this studio and/or these people who are supporting making money out of people's grief as a viable business model.

    As a year one veteran, I must say there is no feeling better than opening up Destiny after a long while and destroying your enemies. I recently just bought Destiny The Collection for PS4, after I had stopped playing when they dropped the news for no new updates on PS3.
    The feeling of opening up my old character and shooting down foes in the Crucible or Atheon, Crota, and Oryx creates this beautiful, gorgeously unique nostalgia that nothing else can truly replicate.
    This game really changed me, It not only evolved into a wonderful, lovely game, but it eventually became the roots of my social life, letting me finally face my fears by speaking to other people, participating in actions I couldn't do in real life. Now, my life is happier because of this digital world.
    Thank you for making this video, and thank you Bungie for one of my most life changing events.

    One difference though, Dark Souls lore was inside Dark Souls, not on a website where you had to put the game down to get to.
    Although they did increase the story for dlc, they were often short and the conclusion left behind raids.
    The loot system is still a broken mess, just less broken. Still a grindfest, just a slight bit more guaranteed end tier stuff but thats only because you need more purple to level up stuff you actually want to keep. The ground collectibles from year one are about moot for a few places, the easiest to see/farm getting the shortest stick ie becoming almost completely pointless you question why they are still there. The simplest and most guaranteed loot comes from factions. Arena, your chosen faction, and the guardian faction. Two of which you can level up doing the repeatable benign missions in free roam at a slow drip, or you could trade in collectables (the ones the devs chose based on how hard it is to farm good luck finding orange items in a field of orange) or ammo to speed it up which requires money that also takes farming to get enough for one ammo pack.
    To say that any of this is good is an overstatement. Its better than it was, not good.
    18 minutes in it still feels like brown nosing than a real review, but I'd probably be on the other side if I had people to play with to mitigate the shortcomings to minor issues than glaring ones.

      If you think he missed a review number, you missed the the point. If you need a number after watching this, you need to rethink how you approach game reviews. Someone putting a number on a game is subjective. What I like, and what you like, are two completely different things. Actually watch and listen to the video. It truly did become my favorite game ever. Nothing will ever give me the same feeling Destiny did. Just threw my Destiny vinyl soundtrack and all the memories came flowing back. What a crazy experience to apart of.

    Good retrospective of the game's development over time but I have to say it's difficult to see it as being as influential of a game as you do when borderlands and warframe exist and neither were mentioned in your video. The idea of combining loot grinding and class based shooter mechanics had been done before.

    Played since the pre-alpha (before beta). It's amazing how much this game has evolved. My favorite part was every week being swordbearer in crotas end. I did that and the vault 5 times a week. Also when I got a fatebringer rolled handcannon in year 3 before age of triumph. Somehow beating the #33 player in the world on my 9th game in trials and getting stomped by kjhovey and aorimoon (the #2 player in the world at the time). I remember going on my ps vita from my room using remote play every Friday at 4am to see xur, getting the necrochasm on the vita secretly when I was grounded, farming materials, spending over 30 hours in a week to get a god rolled imago. Farming a god rolled grasp of Malok which was overpowered for over a year before it got nerfed. Finding the best weapons regardless of what youtubers say like the weylorans March which has the highest aim assist and can still two shot body shot. This game gave me over 1200 hours of entertainment.

      T Sanderson if you played the alpha, or pre alpha, HOW can you happy with all the cut content

    • @tsanderson4154
      @tsanderson4154 7 лет назад +1

      Declan Gilmour I'm not happy that they cut some content. Hell I glitched into some of the dlc areas before they were released. But do you have any idea how many times developers decide to hold certain things for dlc or another game? I generally won't stop playing a game unless there is absolutely nothing to work towards. I even spent the time to get a fully fatebringer rolled handcannon when nobody else had it.

    • @declangilmour8184
      @declangilmour8184 7 лет назад

      T Sanderson me to, and thinking about it, I dont know if its a good or bad thing that I look back on glitching into areas pre DLC fondly. I never realised that until now.
      And yes I can apprechiate having things left, but when the 2013 vididoc shows content that never came out to year 2-3, as a year one player, I had to pay a hell of a lot more than my friend that jumped in not long after TTK released. Then how easily he got the thorn.
      I guess it did make me realise, like this video did, I did get enjoyment, particularly at the grind I left the game because of.
      And it did get to the point were I had nothing at one point. TTK fixed that but by that point, I was starting to get turned off by the grind.
      I had a year one fatebringer, a year one mythoclast, and a year one gally. All nerfered, 2/3 in the name of PvP. One thing I heavily disagree with.

    • @tsanderson4154
      @tsanderson4154 7 лет назад +5

      Declan Gilmour The main thing I hate is how bungie will listen to anyone whining that a weapon is op. IMO op means a gun or archetype is too powerful RELATIVE to other weapons. They ended up nerfing every gun in existence and the guns feel far less satisfying. In destiny 2 they pulled that even further somehow. Sticky grenades won't be able to 1 shot anymore! It'll be impossible to kill more than like 2 people with a single mag and anyone will be able to easily run behind cover and regain their health. I hate having to dedicate the entire time on one person so if there are 2 there's no way to compete and you can be careless where you run because you'll be able to go behind cover anyway.

    I'm gonna show this to my friend who I've been trying to convince to get into Destiny since TDB. He's been going along with the people who still blindly shit on the game... If he doesn't buy the game or at least agree to buy Destiny 2, I'll fucking punch him :) Thing is, he's 1.90 and I'm 1.75, so if he punches back... That's how confident I am of your video's quality.

      No, Test's comment illustrates the thoughts of many year 1 players. Why the fuck do we want to continue playing a game shipped with most of its content stripped or not even developed?

    It kind of annoys me that well thought out and expertly crafted long reviews like this are such a niche thing. Maybe more so to me because every time I see this happen it justifies the word count / time limits enforced by educational institutes that I hate so much. Anyway amazing review as always keep up the good work :)

    personally for me, I have 400ish hours in D1 and 600ish hours in D2, but there's this weird supergood feeling I get when I play D1 that I can't shake. It's just more fun. I feel so bad that I forced myself to play D2, just because it had a much higher player population. It was hard to find matches in D1 crucible, for instance. But when I do play D1, everything is just amazing, even when I have almost all of the loot I could want. There's so much to chase in D2 but I don't want any of it anymore; I realized one night that I was just chasing bounties and deleted the game. D1 though, I feel like I'm playing just to play - it's hard to explain

    Wow never knew skill up did a destiny 1 review merry Christmas to me. Destiny 1 is one of my favorite games of all time I met some of my best friends through Destiny. And I've continued to make more wonderful friends through Destiny 2. I'm so glad I came across this video totally by random. You're definitely one of my favorite gaming channels, destiny definitely does some things very wrong, but most gaming channels I watch only focus on the bad of destiny and completely ignore the good so I'm so appreciative that you're channel talks about the good and bad of destiny.

    I'm writing this comment as I'm listening to the review. I bought destiny for 5 dollars from gamestop used. I then held on to it for half a year, never playing it.
    the taken king was on sale and I bought it for less then 30 dollars. I only played it for a week. now ive picked the game up again. i have to purchase the final dlc and then I will have purchased the full game. I will have spent less then the launch customer and received more content for less money.
    this game is amazing under those circumstances. I feel bad for you guys that bought it at launch. the consumer needs to become more savy and patient. there is no reason to buy destiny at launch. give bungie three years and destiny 2 will be great as well.
