This is the one to buy by the looks of it if you're after a dual sided crank based power meter. Great review as usual and nice and informative. I'm still sticking with my Assioma duos though 😀
I have had a single side Stages. In fact 3 where tested. They all eat batteries and all had problems with missing data. I bought a Power2Max, which functions flawless for three years.
Hi Shane, I have had big reliability problems with 3 R8100 right side units. I bought two Stages LR Ultegra R8100 power meters (one for each bike) because I wanted an accurate dual sided Shimano meter. The left units work perfectly, but I had to have both the right units replaced under warranty for strain gauge failures and one of the warranty replacements failed this morning. The Stages calibration value is supposed to be 890 +/- 50. The left units always calibrate consistently but after less than a month in each case, the right units have started calibrating anywhere between 390 and 1046. Obviously, this leads to very inaccurate data. I had to go back to running them as left side only power meters. Its very disappointing, especially when they worked well initially. It might be worth noting this so people don't go out and purchase these. Thanks, Conor.
@@hondashih0729 i have got it send back to stages. They checked it and said it was alright, and did some accuracy testing with weights. In dry conditions it seems to be reliable but when used in rainy conditions the calibration and thereforce the powernumbers are way off.
My Giant TCR 2020 came with Di2 and Giant Power Pro. Great value. No idea on accuracy, but as I had nothing to compare it to directly it suited my very amateur needs. But now one side isn't showing power as my wattage is ~50% of what it was. Charged, heaps of calibrations, no joy. Now I'm faced with a choice of what to do. Roughly $2k for Garmin pedals, $1400 for this Stages Ultegra unit (which includes a full crankset - what do I do with the old one, seems a waste), or the Shimano unit at who knows how much. Given the bike itself was $6k new, it's a lot of money to replace one little electronic component.
This is very good to see, given I've just got my hands on one! 😁 One thing I found though was the 'Stages Cycling' app (Android) only reports power from one side in the 'Ride' mode, so reported power is around half, with L/R ratio at 100:0 (or vice-versa, can't remember). Data tab shows the data from each, and no problems on a real head unit (overall indoor test ride figures via Bolt were within 1-2% of my KICKR on Zwift, and L/R balance showing ~52/48) so 🤷
I have noticed a significant lower peak power output in sprints when using the dual sided 8100 vs the left single sided 8100. As much as 100-200 watts with the single sided reading higher and the left right dual combo reading much lower.
Given the price and performance of the Assiomas, what are the reasons to get a crank based power meter anymore? I really do not see any advantage unless you absolutely hate the Look Keo clips...

The only pedals that don't require ridiculous shoes and work great at the same time are XTR 910. And Assiomas does change the q factor which is a big deal on 100miles ride. So why use Assiomas when you have Stages - as Lama says: when you replace a product you have to be at least as good as that one
I'd like to see them license the right side tech from them at least. I'd still love to see Shimano acquire SRM and make an amazing spider meter for their road/MTB/gravel groups.
Stages are my goto for crankset based powermeters. The solution though I'm not sure of. Having sensors in a relatively exposed position is concerning. If they're secure and well shielded then ok. Otherwise it's more of a hack workaround to the inherent issues with the 4arm spiders.
I find it odd that pedal meters are no longer a "price point" favorite relative to a crank solution. It used to be the "look cleat" + meter (assioma/garmin) just flat out beat anything crank based cost wise thus it was worth the limitation of being look only.
