      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass yes my boat is now off the water as weather not good here at all. Season finished early, it does mean I should ( note the should ) get more work done🤠

      Roy - it does not matter about the "should" because it is a never ending task in any case... The work will wait and if it gets lonely, some of its friends will turn up so that you have even more to do 😄

      Big improvement today - sunny AND windy. Still running a nasty swell though... You will be waiting a while for the sextant since we do not have one aboard, but if we ever acquire one I will have it on the channel. I would love to try it.

    You certainly picked the right year to take time-out from cruising. What a lousy summer! Can count on one hand how many times we have been out of the marina (Largs), and lift out for winter fast approaching. 😢. Keep up the good work - very much enjoy your videos.

    The issue of phone GPS assuming you are on a road is only an issue of the app you are using. As you say Google Maps will try to put you on a road. However, if you use navionics or any chart based app, it will not do that.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  4 месяца назад +1

      We hope that if we are (say) 10 miles offshore there are no nearby roads for any app to mislead us with 😄

  • @svhulda6157

    I have Samsungs (two off) with Navionics, just as good as my fixed Garmin. Or my laptop with OpenCPN with external antenna. In fact, I have two systems not relying upon boats 12 V system.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  4 месяца назад +1

      If it works, it works. There are lots of solutions, but always verify that they are accurate by making sure that what you see on the chart/GPS is actually visible out the window (unlike the USS Guardian 😉)

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass I only have had GPS for 20 years. And I have learned to zoom in to see details. The 40 years before that, papercharts, clock, pencil, ruler, compass and all that. Still carry papercharts on board. When sailing in Denmark, as an example, they have drifting sand. So blindly trusting GPS can give surprices. And a couple of years ago I reported 5 markers missing in Garmin charts along the west Swedesh coast. And they are still missing. I have cancelled further updates :-) And Navionics, owned by Garmin, are correct updated. So in general, the old paper system still works. But it is a job to keep it updated, that I'm not at all very good at.

      I think we all fail at keeping stuff up to date. As former software developers, I can assure you that keeping stuff up to date as tools and libraries change was the bane of our lives...

    The theory of navigation is important. Getting the basics into your head is easy enough so there's no excuse really.
    A bit of warmth came to my bit of NE Scotland a few days ago but it's cold, grey and breezy once more. It's been a constant stream of fronts with very few, if any, periods of sustained high pressure.

    Hi, Lasses, ? Why do u times the Long and Lat by 60. What is it's significance.? Great ur both well, like the new t shirts. It's coming down in buckets over here, but Spring is just beautiful all the flowers and critters are coming out to play. 🤣💜

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  4 месяца назад +2

      It is only the decimal parts that you multiply by 60 to convert to "minutes" (there are 60 minutes in every degree) so for 54.5° multiply the .5 bit by 60 (0.5 x 60 = 30) and 54.5° is the same as 54°30' which is the notation used on nautical charts. We're glad to hear that you are enjoying the weather over there, over here it feels like autumn is in early

    Lesson is Google maps is not for navigation, Navionics or Savy Navi wouldn't show you on the road, For DR you need to know where you started from, so its important to keep note of your position in case your GPS goes down, ok if you can get a fix but in poor visibility could be difficult. Definitely worth practising the old DR skills regularly

    Vesta Navigator did not zoom in on his electronic chart. The reef was clearly marked , he just did not interrogate the chart properly. Was a rasta chart although I could be corrected on that no doubt.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass

      They had paper charts which showed the hazard, but they did not look at them...

    • @davegood1751
      @davegood1751 4 месяца назад +1

      Most professional sail people, especially from across the pond as well as other countries and the younger onesdo not seem to use charts anymore but rely on GPS navigation apps and instruments. You can see it in evidence on a lot of U tube channels. As you do, I carry paper charts but probably use them a little differently to you but to the same effect
