    I quite like the combination of white paint on doors and leaving frames / trim as varnished.

    I thought the Ikea title was going to be about the hinges which are a classic Ikea design (hopefully yours are in stainless steel).
    A third option beside new Ikea boats for marinas and "classic" boats with lots of dark wood is an older boat that needs a lot of work. For us that means no more dark wood as the veneer had so much water damage. Our 1977 Rival 38 is being transformed with light coloured paint - makes her seem a lot larger.

      I have seen boats that have been done that way with bright paint and it definitely makes it feel bigger and brighter. I prefer older, proven, well looked-after boats. The internal decoration is, of course, a matter of personal taste.

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass yes, we prefer a more modern, lighter look which is fortunate given our budget and the sustainability issues of replacement hardwood that we would have needed for a restoration to the classic look.
      A key influence on the choices between project boat vs well-looked-after vs new (and every point in the wide spectrum) is going to be finance. The new boat builders live in a parallel universe to ours when it comes to considerations of value.
      Buying new is always likely to be a less sustainable choice (until someone can make an evidenced claim that the whole production cycle can have a negative carbon footprint).

      These days we are using alternative woods like sapele or iroko. Totally agree about new boat builders being in an alternative universe 😄😄

    I agree the monohulls are getting wider at back and inside. I think allot of the sales go to fleet, charter companies and allot of the design goes towards these. I found that some of the ikea looking interior boats had incredible creaking from their wood interiors too

      Great point - we noticed some years back, when we were looking at boats, that Beneteaus seemed to have incredibly noisy cabin soles and that was just in the marina. Heaven only knows what it would be like at sea!!!

    Amazing I was waiting for this ikea video 😂 BTW I believe Bavaria before they started making boats used to make furniture! Maybe that’s why the wood in the 1998 to 2006 boats were well made. Sorry posted earlier comment from my bike channel so here is again from sea Star 😂

      OK - let us get two things out of the way. First, we are happy with our boat and we would certainly buy a Bavaria on the basis of owning this one. Second, we firmly believe that the _current_ quality of a boat depends on what the previous owner has done, or has neglected to do.
      I do NOT think you should be buying a Bavaria just because we are happy with ours and here is why I say that...
      Firstly the more modern ones (say after 2005 or so) appear to be built differently from our 2002/2003 design. Different shaped hull, different interiors, etc. Also I cannot say if ones built in the USA are constructed to the same standard as the German built ones. Lastly, if the previous owners neglected maintenance (or did it poorly) then the boat might have a lot of issues.
      I expect ANY secondhand boat to have _two_ major issues - bad electrics installed by the previous owner and diesel bug in the fuel tank. This applies to any boat. For Bavarias like ours I would open all the internal cabinets and feel the roof of each cabinet for damp. The sealant on the early 2000s models seems to have a 15 to 20 year lifespan and it is not uncommon for the stanchion bases to leak rainwater into the boat and it usually winds up on top of the cabinets. We resealed all ours.
      (As an aside, on our boat Bavaria had used mild steel screws in the backs and tops of the cabinets. These were rusted and we pulled them out and replaced them with stainless ones so that we have immediate and easy access behind the cabinets if needed.)
      In terms of sailing, this model does not like to go straight into waves and prefers to take a wave at a slight angle. This is probably caused by the somewhat flat forefoot. Also she is a bit tender when there are sizeable waves on the beam in light winds but a preventer cures that. She absolutely loves sailing close-hauled and will easily reach hull speed (about 7.3kts).
      This boat has looked after us in all sorts of conditions but she is a 36 not a 34 so do bear that in mind. The 34 will be a bit smaller and lighter but should still be a capable boat.
      I strongly recommend that a survey is done by a well regarded surveyor and that you take the boat for a sea trial to assess her sailing abilities. If you do acquire her then I hope you enjoy her as much as we enjoy our boat.
      Good luck.

      Wow,thank you very much for the detailed answer. I didn`t expected it so fast. It helps a lot. I will also get a survey if I decied to buy it. But it is always nice to hear from someone who has this type of boat. I always had long keel ships. But now I need a bit more space an affordable ship for my sailing . Lots of regards , I love watching your channel . I will let you know if I buy the ship .It is from2001 so still the good one perhaps….. I am sailing often alone so that is the lenght I still can handle . Save and happy sailing to you , best regards xx Milena

    For me it does not matter the colour of the wood i just want it to be robust. I looked at a 2014 bav and it was falling to bits with lots of the hinges loose and screws falling out. I have seen the same on a 2009 Hanse and it was in a similar state. I cannot believe that they are still installing port lights over the galley (without rain shields) that let water in when its raining.

    Morning Ladies. Very interesting that you say Salty Lass has no Prop Walk. I have a Bavaria 33 ( my first boat). It has a saildrive like you but it most definitely does have prop walk. I think prop walk is caused by several different factors not just the tilt of the prop. When you next go out, could you actually have a look at this ? I would be extremely interested to find out what you discover.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass

      Hi there - we usually use a hard blast astern when reversing out of the slip and we also use reverse quite a lot to come up the alleyway to get back into the slip and we have never noticed any propensity of the boat to move to one side or the other. We also have a fixed 2 blade Volvo prop. What sort does your boat have?

    • @jonmagowan8432
      @jonmagowan8432 3 месяца назад +1

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass Thanks for the reply. Yes, my boat also has a standard Volvo 2 bladed aluminium prop. I need to reverse quite a long way into the marina and my berth. I am a novice so I’m learning all the time and have struggled with manoeuvring in the confines of the marina. I’ve noticed with my boat, that with anything more than 1 or 2 knots the prop walk is not really noticeable but at very slow speeds it definitely is a ‘thing’ and needs to be considered. I would be very interested to understand if you don’t have prop walk, then why not !

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  3 месяца назад +1

      I think I understand the issue. Bavarias do not have a balanced rudder. The pivot is at the front of the rudder and so there is a restoring force to centre the rudder when underway. However, when going _backwards_ the rudder will tend to flip one way or the other and constant adjustment is needed to correct for this.
      Another issue to consider is that for many sailboats going _very_ slow means that you lose rudder authority and the boat tends to wander and wallow depending on current and wind. To keep effective control of the boat you need to keep water moving over the keel at a reasonable speed. We find that about 2kts is the minimum. Below that the water speed is to low for the rudder to exert control.
      With prop-walk, put the boat into reverse at (say) 2500 rpm and the boat will always move to one side and it will always be the same side because it depends on the direction of rotation of the prop. If the boat can move to either side then it is not prop-walk.

    Giday Wenches, how the ...... are u both, I'm having a great moment, why u ask, I'm watching an episode of Salty Lass.😂🤣😛🐧🐘 with ur asthma Gaynor, u really should be wearing a respirator, dealing with chemicals, naughty Lass. But remember it's what Beverley says that matters😲😲 Production boats, just thrown together, they come with instruction manuals. It's not wood it's generally veneer, or covered in laminate.

      The asthma always sounds worse on camera because the microphones are really close to our mouths, but in real life you would never notice it. BTW - Salty Lass has an official manual from Bavaria. We cannot remember where we stored it....

    It's what I hate about most modern boats the IKEA look. I too was at the boat show and the god's honest truth is even if I was a lottery winner it would be a no from me. I thought about it so what would you do with your millions then. I would buy an older boat probably of Scandinavian heritage or thereabouts and have a complete refit done at the best yard I could find

    IKEA design and IKEA quality. Probably okay for the rich person who just wants a weekend toy and can afford to pay to keep it in one of the marinas on the UK south coast. Not so good on passage though. I passed one on my mono hull while I watched it pogo in the chop. The bow was coming out of the water all the way back to the keels. Horses for courses.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  3 месяца назад

      Some boats are good at taking the chop at 90° others less so. We find that Salty Lass prefers to take the chop at a slight angle but TBH if it is that choppy, we prefer to anchor up and let it pass 😉

    I actually think those "IKEA design" boats are ugly as heck.
    The older look just has more appeal, in my humble opinion.
    And all those sharp corners are a sore, literally and figuratively.
