On Day 27 of our Round The World Trip for food with Star Alliance, my wife and I took a day trip to Belém to do some sightseeing in Lisbon. We had the original Portuguese egg tarts from Pastéis de Belém. For dinner, we ate at a secret Chinese restaurant in Lisbon.
1:14 Pastéis de Belém - Known to serve the original Portuguese egg tarts, which are called pastéis de Belém, we made the legendary cafe our first stop of the day. The egg tarts are incredibly good, with layers of crispy pastry and creamy egg custard in the middle. I’m not huge on pastries or sweets, but it was still good. Pastéis de Belém also has a selection of other Portuguese sweets, and we had a chocolate filled Portuguese donut at Pastéis de Belém, plus a couple cups of coffee. Total price - 6.50 EUR
5:54 Belém Tower - There are a few very famous attractions in Lisbon located in Belém, and after the egg tart, I headed over to visited the Belém Tower, which is located within the Tagus River. After waiting in line and paying the entrance fee, I explored the tower and I especially enjoyed the view from the top. Price - 6 EUR
8:37 Jerónimos Monastery - A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jerónimos Monastery is an incredible feat of architecture. You have to wait in line and pay a fee get entrance into the cloister of the monastery. But it’s well worth waiting out the line because the cloister is incredible. Also, without paying you can go into the church at Jerónimos Monastery which is also spectacular. Entrance to the cloister - 10 EUR per person
11:04 Time Out Market Lisboa - For lunch, Ying and I were hungry, but since it was a Sunday, so many of the restaurants I wanted to try were closed. So we made it back to the center of Lisbon and ended up going to the Time Out Market Lisboa. There are plenty of choices for what to eat at Time Out Market Lisboa, including both Portuguese food and international food. I ordered bacalhau with chickpeas, a famous Portuguese food combination made with salted cod.
13:07 Museu Calouste Gulbenkian - After eating lunch at Time Out Market Lisboa, we continued on to Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, a well known art museum in Lisbon. Free entrance on Sunday
14:07 Secret Chinese food at Chinês Clandestino Restaurant - Ying and I were both still hungry after only a small lunch. Again, most of the Portuguese food restaurants I wanted to eat at were closed on Sunday, so we both decided to eat Chinese food. After doing some searching I came across Chinês Clandestino Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant with no signs. The food was overall quite good, and I have to admit that both Ying and I were ready for some Chinese food! Total price - 27.20 EUR for everything
20:51 A Ginjinha - I had already ended the video for the day, but when I was A Ginjinha as we walked home, I decided to stop in this legendary takeaway bar and try a cup of Portuguese cherry ginginha. It was a great way to end the day.
Day 26 was alright. I was a little disappointed we weren’t able to eat authentic Portuguese food, but things don’t always work out the way you expected them to when you travel, and that’s alright.

Love this. Haaaa I love Mark, he has such a noteable expression for his love of food.
Ilham rafiqsyah Kudos to you.. Terbaikkkkk...
That's trademark Mark Wiens for ya :)
Yep! Mark knows his stuff. Thought today his understated remarks about the custard tart were interesting: it was the best custard tart he had tasted but no 45 degree angle head tilt... I've had one of those bad boys - they are truly lovely.
Good stuff from Mark and Ying (plus baby now!)
A
tonydeltablues That's because he is not much into sweets!
I'm Thai and live in Portugal and love to be here. It's lovely country and friendly people. Food and dessert are cheap and very good. 👍
Im in England and its gone to the dogs, this city is defo on the list if there is good job or business opportunities
@@tlesta666 England. Good. I have plenty of Indian friends there settled with their families. They said London looks more asian like India or Pakistan.
want to visit lisbon is there more chinese resto in lisbon?
I hope you are successful and that you continue to be happy in our country. 🙏
@@mysweetpea1616 Lisbon, Porto and Aveiro have a lot of Chinese and Cubans.
You dont have to order two coffees, just ask for a "abatanado" wich is a double coffee and the Pasteis de Belem or Pasteis de Nata are even better with cinnamon on top.
AGREED! i prefer La Manteigaria though but yes def sugar and cinnamon is a must lol
@@milndolrman would be "A Manteigaria" in Portuguese. "La" is Spanish/Italian/French. The definite articles in Portuguese are just vowels (i.e. O/A)
An "abatanado" is not a double coffee, it's an "americano", a diluted espresso
The food is another reason to visit Portugal. Our seafood is just amazing. Thanks for visit us Mark! 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
It doesn't matter where you go ,,, but food that your use to eating growing up will always be favourite mmmmm
Ying is so adorable. She is my favorite part of all of Mark's videos. She's always smiling and on the go. Great video as always!
Ying (and Micah) relaxing in the park is cute. Love Pasteis de Belem. I had more than one tart during my visit. 😀 Another excellent day in Lisboa!
Tosh T
Wowwww you've been there...... so cool 😎
"things don’t always work out the way you expected them to when you travel, and that’s alright." :') Watching your food videos makes everything right, Mark. THANKS!
Although Mark doesn't have a sweet tooth, he'll eat desserts just to show us what's offered 👍 TY Mark 🙌😉
I used to eat at least 5 pasteils a day. My hotel was like a 2 minute walkaway, right opposite the monastery :)
oh really ?? shall we take a trip together next time ?
297 Kcal * 5 daily intake seems reasonable... :)
i'm Portuguese living abroad so this made my day, subscribed for sure and big thumbs up!
Excited to watch your video! Take care Mark!
This is my favourite food channel on RUclips by far !!!! Keep it up mark
Ying relaxing with her shoes off is everything!!

Mark and Ying, I love to see the beautiful food and landscapes of the world! Dna tests showed me the different heritages I own, and this is a great way for me to experience them! Thank you!
Might be the best video, yet! Really felt like I was going through everything with you both! Sort of like just hanging out with friends! Keep up the great videos!
Good work Buddy....
Excellent video once again..
All the best Kim.....
I just wanted to take the time to say thank you Mark and Ying for continuing to travel and make videos. I love your videos, and I hope God continues to bless you, your family, and your travels. :)
I recognize every place that you've been to in these videos about Portugal..Memories are just too overwhelming.
One thing I must say-the quality of the videos are outstanding!👍
Eu adorei estes pastéis de Belém!! Que vontade de voltar à Portugal. As Bolas de Berlin aqui no Brasil chamamos de Sonhos!
2:25 - That's called Bola de Berlim ("Berlin Ball" in English). It has nothing to do with donuts. ; )
4:50 - If you're interested to know, that place was a former sugar factory, that's why it's so big. : )
Nem tudo se traduz à letra amigo :)
Actually, they're called custard doughnuts in the UK, and not "Berlin Balls".
@@RuiChui - I didn't say they were called that in the UK, I said that's what Bolas de Berlim translates into English.
@@Module79L but you cannot translate everything literally, from one language to the another. For example, Pasteis de Nata are called Portuguese Custard Tarts. Now translate "it's raining cats and dogs" into Portuguese. Would you do that? Or would you say, "chove torrencialmente"?
I just came across your vlogs. What I love about your videos, beside all the great food that you eat. All the historical sites you go to.
It's so awesome that you start the video with breakfast and end with dinner...
Another fab food travelogue. Thanks for sharing with us Mark and Ying :)
great job with the bit of educational history and landmark info. Great mix of history, architecture and food
The 'chocolate hamburger' (4:06) is the famous Berliner. We call it 'ball of Berlin' (bola de Berlim) and it seems to be more popular here than in Berlin, Germany.
I just recently got hooked and subscribed...I love it when Ying gives Mark suggestions on how to proceed with eating the food (like the donut, biting it seems more appealing rather than tearing a piece). Also, props to Ying for doing a great job in video taping! The panning, zooms and focus are all looking professional. 👌🏽👍🏼
Belém Tower is majestic in Lisbon and the city is gorgeous. You had an aventura of the tasty foods in Portugal.
Great Vid Mark & Ying! Love the egg tarts to Secret Chinese apartment style restaurant! Can't wait for Micah to start traveling!
waw... the sky is so blue.. almost no cloud.. so clear and blue...

Bonjour ,
Les pasteis de Belem sont les meilleurs que j'ai jamais mangé 😉
À Paris il y en a des comparables dans un endroit qui s'appelle "Comme à Lisbonne "
Merci pour ces Super videos 👍🏻
Great! I immediately pulled me a recipe on how to make portogese egg tarts. Never had egg tarts - looking forward making and tasting it. Wonderful place the Jeronimos Monastery. Great hidden chinese restaurant - the hot and sour soup immedietely watered my mouth. Thanks again for a wonderful vlog !!!

always great content, mark and ying.
I love the foods and beautiful sceneries ❤️❤️️❤️💞💞👏👏👏👏
Ying smile is so adorable
Lisbon the capital of Chinese food. 😊 Sometimes the best places to eat will depend on how adventurous your willing to be. Nice find. Thanks Mark-Ying.
What a pleasure knowing that you have been to Lisbon. When i was 13 Y.O. one of my brothers was and still is working at Pasteis de Belém: Then i used to go there almost everyday and i never refused to eat as many egg tarts as they gave me: So one day my brother just took me inside the factory and just closed the doors an left me inside, so that i could eat as many tarts as i wanted and so i did !!! After that day i took a very long time to start eating again that delicacy! Belém is for me the most beautiful part of Lisbon. Great video. Cheers.
Wow! I love eating but I had never thought that I'd like to be watching someone else eating - until I saw you! Portugal (the whole of it) is a culinary and wine paradise. Just try more of it 😉 There is nothing as happy as a well served palate! Keep enjoying!
Thanks for showcasing 🇵🇹

I really enjoyed this video. I don't know how I missed this one.
Great video, Mark! Yes, the legendary Ginjinha is wonderful and I mentioned it in the comments section of your Portuguese Food Tour video. There's another 'Ginja' in the area called 'Eduardina', you should have visited that one, as well.

hmmmm enjoy Mark !!
A zona Norte de Portugal é muito bonita a cidade do Porto Nazaré e muitas mais e a comida também muito boa
I’m Portuguese
And live in Hawaii
I wish I could visit there
I somewhat patiently wait for Wednesday's & Sundays - it's difficult sometimes :) My favorite part of the day is watching you and Ying on your adventure, while drinking my coffee.
do you know that Sunday is a resting day for most of the Europeans especially the Christians including catholic? that is why many shops are closed! if you go to some of Muslim countries including those few states in Malaysia, the shops are closed on Friday as it is an Islamic Sabbath.
as i stated earlier, vasco da gama set the portuguese spice quest under the "gospel, gold and glory" motto. he sailed from lisbon to goa in india and then to malacca for spices.
i do not even know that egg tart is sold all thai KFC restaurants. do you know that mcdonalds malaysia just launched a new dish called cakoi (a chinese deep fried bread-stick) with several choices of soya milk, porridge and sweet condiments like the coconut jam.
I think the KFC East Asian version come from Macau
That beef dish looks great...makes my mouth water!
OMG Ying so cute 😂😂 please give Ying extra screen time next time pls 💞😻
ur videos r awesome
Amazing!
