FYI - Since this video was released, Befaco came out with VCMC - an excellent MIDI controller that's also a CV to MIDI module (and can also act as a standalone controller with a mod for USB power)
Since CV to MIDI is relatively scarce, it's worth adding that the original Bass Station Rack has one pair of pitch and gate CV jacks that are bidirectional - you can use them to convert MIDI to CV or CV to MIDI, and they can be used inependently of the actual synth (so you can control the synth itself on one MIDI channel but have the CV i/o running on a different one). Can be set or Hz/volt for interfacing with Korg stuff, too. There's no conversion to/from CC so it's limited but you do get a pretty nice little 90s analog DCO monosynth with a bunch of preset locations and ploychaining as an added bonus.
Digitone's sequencer, effects and FM poly synth are such a great compliment to euro! I run my intellijel 7U setup and pulsar-23 into it and use DT as my command center for transport, clock and sequencing.
Doepfer A-192-2 and the bastl instruments 1983 poly cv/gate to midi are 2 other ones as well. But the polyend is nice. I like. Thank you again for all your videos. Awesome
Shuttle Control is also a fantastic module for this purpose. It's outputs can route cc's back to your other hardware gear and the outputs are also configurable in any combo of v/8, gate, trigger, or cc data you want...very handy with digitakt or digitone!
Don't forget about the beautiful Endorphin.es Shuttle control that is extremely flexibel and besides complex midi options can also output white noise, 808 cymbal noise, random voltages etc. on it's many outputs.

Does the ES General CV send out the chords it creates over the external midi?. As far as I can see it mirrors everything that is sent to the midi sound generator but i'm wondering if there is extra processing done to create extra midi notes signals for things like the Shepard tones and if these are sent out too. Basically i want use it as a CV-midi for external synths, I'm not that bothered about the internal sound generator and this seems to have more CV input compared to the Doepfer A-192-2. I have an ES-8 so i could use that and the silent way CV-midi then out thru Ableton but i was trying to avoid using the computer for this application
You might want to redo this video. I have a Prophet Rev2 I want to control with eurorack and it looks like there are more options available now. Also the Behringer Neutron has a unipolar LFO output and an attenuator, this works great as an expression pedal controller for most synths

I am delighted with the Endorphin.es Shuttle Control, Midi to CV ( 16 channels ) and got presets (16) to launch in the module from a computer (giving a specific role to each one as pitch, gate, tap LFO, Atouch, velocity...) To discover really . But this only one part of the problem isn't ? What about cv to midi ... Philscott
Is there a way to know if the control voltage you are providing is too much voltage? Like could I use the audio signal from my older Moog theremin to be the CV signal (not equipped with CV out)?

Yes and the reason i like the polyend is for all the outputs. I am looking i to controlling my modular from my mpc live 2 but am having some difficulties. I also have the sl mk3 from novation that i can use. Dont know what to use. I only have 2 separate midi to cv gate mod modules at the moment. That is why that polyend looks like a winner for me. I great video. I have the Intellijel uMidi. Its 6 hp and provides Midi to CV along with a clock divider, sequencer sync via run and reset outputs., 0 -10 vpo, gate and trigger outputs and more. Very powerful in a small package. I also have the Squarp Pyramid which has CV/Gate in/out.
+1 for the CV.OCD because it’s very flexible and you can carry it everywhere since it’s independently powered. But an obvious, cheaper option (in the sense that it saves you a dedicated midi to cv converter) is a semi modular with midi (0-coast, Microvolt, Neutron). It would do the trick with the advantage of having another source of sounds and modulation. Yes, it offers less flexibility / control than a dedicated converter but it would cover the critical aspects (tempo/rhythm, pitch, and more). Even cheaper - and, of course, more limited - would be a beatstep. BTW, it would be great if the Medusa had, instead of so many pads (Being keyboard-centered I don’t appreciate them other than as samples/percussion triggers, or as a sequencer interface -like in the superb Circuit design-), a modular matrix. It’d be a killer.

So, what are the chances of getting your soothing voice to break down what Midi 2.0 means for us mere mortals and how - if there's any indication yet - it might be adopted by Eurorack etc, given the limits of CV and the resurgence of old school and analog... It seems Midi 2.0 could be a bridge between worlds but also open up a portal to other dimensions? Sorry to stir the Zombies... perhaps its too early to know?

Shouldn’t it be possible to use the midi thru of Digitone in DIN sync mode and then with a midi TRS din adapter plug it directly into Pam’s Workout? That would save you one gate out and potentially gain one more voice channel (e.g. with Yarns).

I'm having trouble getting the cv to midi (midi out using the breakout) to work on the General CV. When I hook the breakout to my Disting mk4, both midi in and midi out work fine and I can control my Minibrute using Channel 1. However, when I hook the breakout module to the General CV, Midi in works (external Midi to cv), but I cannot get Midi out to work. I have upgraded to the latest firmware v1.4 and am using the Programmable mode. I set Note A to Channel 1 and triggered. I even set the Midi Out setting to 1. Is there something else that I need to set?
Very nice! I guess I tought myself most of this already, but I have a very special problem. I have a Digitakt that sends the masterclock and stop/start to my eurorack via a HERMOD -> Tempi to a René 2.0 which is the controller. The start / stop works great, but The René doesn‘t jump back to position 1, so the beats are in sync with notes, but not with the notes I want. I know that the René can be told to reset its sequence via a CV at the Mod input, but that means I can‘t use that input for other stuff and I don‘t know if the Hermod can Send a start / stop signal just once ... I only know it can send clocks. Is there something I am missing?
Hermod can send clock with restart command at start or stop - -> G1+RESET P to G8+RESET P: Hermod will output a RESET signal on the CV output (together with the clock on the GATE output), helping your modules to keep the sync when PLAY is pressed. - G1+RESET S to G8+RESET S: Hermod will output a RESET signal on the CV output when STOP is pressed.

i got my dfam then was sorely disappointed i didnt have anything else to patch it with (except my minilogue to sync with it), still havent settled on what to buy , it becomes a bottomless pit for me , id also want to interface with vcv rack .. so is the expert sleepers module the best-cheapest way to go ? or a midi-cv converter (i wish i kept my ancient one that i sold with my korg mono/poly) i have a weird combo of digitakt/dfam/minilogue (and reason for daw)
Two recommendations: Did you see my "why eurorack is awesome" video? I expand DFAM 5 ways there. And yeah also check out my "hybrid modular" video for using ES-8 or a DC coupled interface to bridge to VCV. ES-8 is the best way to go but it's not cheap :/

The Polyend Poly's manual officially says: "Please notice that Poly module Gate outputs are 0-12V (the Eurorack norm is 0-5V)". And then all values are given: • 8 Gate Outputs (0-12V) • 8 Pitch Outputs (0-12V,V/oct.) • 8 Velocity Outputs (0-12V) • 8 Modulation Outputs (0-12V,selectable CC message 0-127 using DIP switch on the back panel) Poly Module play modes. If the Eurorack standard is 0 thru 5 volts, why do they build this thing offside these limits? I have bought it because I've seen youtubers using it on its own within a normal Eurorack. Moreover, the Moog Subsequent 37 is built to Eurorack standard and has 3 CV ins and one gate. Will I destroy it when I connect it to the Poly's outputs? I'm heavily confused now and have to consider returning it to the vendor... What I wouldn't like at all... Any suggestions or explanations? Thanks beforehand!
0-5v is a Doepfer standard, not necessarily for all of 5U eurorack modules. There are many modules that take +/-12v, as this is usually the limit of the power supply itself. Oh I didn't realize this was 2 year old comment haha. Hope this helps someone anyway

He literally advised me not to do this. So, this can be considered a well-educated answer: These devices are not compatible.
I do not get it, why would anyone want to sequence ordinary synths with modular? Modular sequencing capabilities are so far very limited, even with modules like O_C, which are also digital. Quite simple algos that run on expensive hardware. Just use a phone, tablet, pc..
Well, it could let you effectively add an extra LFO or envelope to a standalone synth. Trigger from the standalone sent via midi to the modular, which initiates the generation of a CV curve, which can be converted back into midi as a specific CC message, and routed back into the standalone synth to control some parameter, like filter resonance (which rarely gets a dedicated envelope on a synth), pulse width, waveform etc. EDIT - I realize that my suggestion is for modulation, not sequencing. I think the only reason for that would just be that you happened to already have plenty of modular sequencers, presumably with a sequences that you already built or something. Or just preference of interface. But I agree - modular is a very expensive and cumbersome approach to sequencing non-modular synths.
@taavi you can run practically everything on a pc or iPad. Almost any hardware outside the box will be limited and with less features, and have knobs, and a physical touch and feel and that’s the whole point. If you are happy and creative on a pc or iPad you certainly don’t need any hardware at all and it’s totally cool of course.
On the contrary, real-time tweaking of hardware sequencers along with the interaction of other elements like quantizers, voltage processors etc is much easier than using software. Sometimes i want to control everything from the modular and that includes hardware synths like my Waldorf Quantum without having to go via a computer so something like the ES General CV can then bring in these other sounds sources just like they are another module. Simple algorithms, when combined with other voltage control, can produce evolving rhythms and patterns that are very difficult to do with current software. You could do this with a virtual modular but even with a powerful computer, moderately complex patches can bog down the computer. Hardware is just much easier to "play" but yes, it is a very expensive way of doing things.
@@CuriousDroid I can do any modulation I want on a computer, even output as cv. I have dvelved into modular and found it to be extremely limited and expensive, compared to Pure Data or supercollider, which is free. Only reason I own some modular today is because of sound, and even that can be argued by many. Modular is next Fruity Loops for rich kids. I understand the physical aspect of it though. But many modular setups still use Electrons or some other soundmachine that are essentially physical daws.
I completely disagree. I am heavy into the MIDI world and have been working on MIDI hardware with Arduino. I've been dipping my toes in the modular world via VCV Rack and I'm simply amazed at how much innovation is going on in the sequencing world of modular hardware. Even just the modular nature lends itself to more organic sequencing and controlled randomness. I'm dying for something like the Eloquencer or even something like the Turing Machine to come to MIDI land. Sure I could make a Pure Data patch to do similar things, but having physical hardware with knobs and patch points to intuitively change the controlled randomness is pretty hard to beat.

The General CV has a setting to enable output of all the internally generated MIDI (e.g. for the chords, Shephard tones etc.) via the breakout.

the cv resolution is much higher than the 127 steps of a midi cc signal / midi lfo. so it needs some smoothing.

My Midi'd Monotribe does a decent job of CV to MIDI conversion.
If your case has midi ports it is easy to wire disting to that via dupont cables... Just another possible

Is it better to connect an arturia keystep with a behringer model d via cv or via midi?
KnobFarm Ferry is a better option for interfacing eurorack with everything else, mainly because of stereo send and return.

@@loopop well, I can name the in-s and out-s that are available: Volca has a 3.5 mm CV-in, then two 3.5 mm In-sync-Out and a 3.5 mm headphones out

i got my dfam then was sorely disappointed i didnt have anything else to patch it with (except my minilogue to sync with it), still havent settled on what to buy , it becomes a bottomless pit for me , id also want to interface with vcv rack .. so is the expert sleepers module the best-cheapest way to go ? or a midi-cv converter (i wish i kept my ancient one that i sold with my korg mono/poly) i have a weird combo of digitakt/dfam/minilogue (and reason for daw)
Two recommendations: Did you see my "why eurorack is awesome" video? I expand DFAM 5 ways there. And yeah also check out my "hybrid modular" video for using ES-8 or a DC coupled interface to bridge to VCV. ES-8 is the best way to go but it's not cheap :/
@@loopop yeah i need to check them out again to mabye spark some ideas , its been a while , and yeah :( i think i need to hold off a bit more before i go full eurotard .. each time i look into that i get lost deciding on a few modules to fit a 60hp rack or something, then it snowballs into something way bigger :):(
The Polyend Poly's manual officially says: "Please notice that Poly module Gate outputs are 0-12V (the Eurorack norm is
0-5V)". And then all values are given:
• 8 Gate Outputs (0-12V)
• 8 Pitch Outputs (0-12V,V/oct.)
• 8 Velocity Outputs (0-12V)
• 8 Modulation Outputs (0-12V,selectable CC message 0-127 using
DIP switch on the back panel) Poly Module play modes.
If the Eurorack standard is 0 thru 5 volts, why do they build this thing offside these limits? I have bought it because I've seen youtubers using it on its own within a normal Eurorack. Moreover, the Moog Subsequent 37 is built to Eurorack standard and has 3 CV ins and one gate. Will I destroy it when I connect it to the Poly's outputs?
I'm heavily confused now and have to consider returning it to the vendor... What I wouldn't like at all...

0-5v is a Doepfer standard, not necessarily for all of 5U eurorack modules. There are many modules that take +/-12v, as this is usually the limit of the power supply itself.

I remember that I've sent this question to Moog's support team, and I remember that a supporter named Adam told me that I should not try to make such a connection. He literally advised me not to do this. So, this can be considered a well-educated answer: These devices are not compatible.

I do not get it, why would anyone want to sequence ordinary synths with modular? Modular sequencing capabilities are so far very limited, even with modules like O_C, which are also digital. Quite simple algos that run on expensive hardware. Just use a phone, tablet, pc..
Well, it could let you effectively add an extra LFO or envelope to a standalone synth. Trigger from the standalone sent via midi to the modular, which initiates the generation of a CV curve, which can be converted back into midi as a specific CC message, and routed back into the standalone synth to control some parameter, like filter resonance (which rarely gets a dedicated envelope on a synth), pulse width, waveform etc.
EDIT - I realize that my suggestion is for modulation, not sequencing. I think the only reason for that would just be that you happened to already have plenty of modular sequencers, presumably with a sequences that you already built or something. Or just preference of interface. But I agree - modular is a very expensive and cumbersome approach to sequencing non-modular synths.
@taavi you can run practically everything on a pc or iPad. Almost any hardware outside the box will be limited and with less features, and have knobs, and a physical touch and feel and that’s the whole point. If you are happy and creative on a pc or iPad you certainly don’t need any hardware at all and it’s totally cool of course.
On the contrary, real-time tweaking of hardware sequencers along with the interaction of other elements like quantizers, voltage processors etc is much easier than using software. Sometimes i want to control everything from the modular and that includes hardware synths like my Waldorf Quantum without having to go via a computer so something like the ES General CV can then bring in these other sounds sources just like they are another module. Simple algorithms, when combined with other voltage control, can produce evolving rhythms and patterns that are very difficult to do with current software. You could do this with a virtual modular but even with a powerful computer, moderately complex patches can bog down the computer. Hardware is just much easier to "play" but yes, it is a very expensive way of doing things.
@@CuriousDroid I can do any modulation I want on a computer, even output as cv. I have dvelved into modular and found it to be extremely limited and expensive, compared to Pure Data or supercollider, which is free. Only reason I own some modular today is because of sound, and even that can be argued by many. Modular is next Fruity Loops for rich kids. I understand the physical aspect of it though. But many modular setups still use Electrons or some other soundmachine that are essentially physical daws.
I completely disagree. I am heavy into the MIDI world and have been working on MIDI hardware with Arduino. I've been dipping my toes in the modular world via VCV Rack and I'm simply amazed at how much innovation is going on in the sequencing world of modular hardware. Even just the modular nature lends itself to more organic sequencing and controlled randomness. I'm dying for something like the Eloquencer or even something like the Turing Machine to come to MIDI land. Sure I could make a Pure Data patch to do similar things, but having physical hardware with knobs and patch points to intuitively change the controlled randomness is pretty hard to beat.
