Mac84: The TRUTH about the iMac G3 DV - Debunking ShortCircuit's Video

  • Опубликовано: 10 май 2020
  • In this video I'll be spreading some truth about the iMac G3. Alex, from the ShortCircuit RUclips Channel, made a video about his iMac G3 DV model. Unfortunately, there was a ton of incorrect information in it! So in this video we're going to be responding to Alex's claims. You can find his original video here for context: • THE Computer of the 20...
    I'm not doing this response video to be smug or a know-it-all. I feel like Alex missed the mark in some technical areas which gives this computer a bad image. Alex did get some things right, but in this video I'd like to help debunk what was wrong.
    Big thanks to my friends Jay, Bruce, and Dana for their support and encouragement while making this video.
    Correction:
    -The first iMacs from 1998 had ATI IIc and ATI Rage Pro graphics chipsets, not ATI Rage 128 chipsets, those were in later models.
    -Not all iMac G3 models were discontinued in January 2002. It seems only the 700MHz model was discontinued in order to not directly complete with the iMac G4 and the eMac. Apple still sold the 500MHz and 600MHz models until early 2003. The 600MHz "Snow" model was the last iMac G3 model available, and was discontinued around March 2003.

    Regarding performance: I had an iMac G3/350 (the entry level of the slot-loading family) from 1999 until 2002. When I started using Mac OS X, I expanded the original 64MB of RAM to 256MB, and for a long time I used Mac OS X 10.1.5 on it. The iMac was stable and never really felt sluggish. The problem with most young RUclipsrs 'revisiting' vintage hardware is that they often perform superficial research and, more importantly, lack perspective and experience to really contextualise what they're talking about.

    Even though these have that "big scary crt" in them, they are fairly well compartmentalized inside. You generally won't be working near the crt if you are , for example, replacing the hard drive.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  4 года назад +13

      Yep! The logic board on these models are completely separated form the CRT, making it easy to service them without worrying about even discharging it. I’m really not certain why Alex took the rear housing off above the CRT and the mentioned the shock risk, unless he was just trying to tear down the entire thing.

    iMac G3’s didn’t stop production in January 2002, as I have one manufactured a few months later. They stopped being sold in early 2003.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  4 года назад +9

      Thanks for the correction! I was going off of what I had read on Everymac.com, which states January 2002. However, looking deeper into this, that discontinued date is only for the 700MHz model. Apple did still sell the 500 and 600MHz models until March 2003. (I guess they didn't want to eat into the sales of the iMac and eMac). This confirms what I remembered, seeing iMac G4s, eMacs, and iMac G3s side-by-side at my local Apple retail store in the early 2000s.
      The Internet Archive's Wayback machine has a final (recorded) entry for the iMac G3 hardware page on February 2003. It seems only the 600MHz Snow model was being offered at that time. What a fantastic lifespan for this revolutionary product. :)

    The main problem with the switch to slot loading optical drives was that it coincided with a fast food chain distributing mini-sized Pokemon disks. I provided tech support for a library at the time and cannot tell you how much time I spent disassembling those machines just to extract mini CDs from them.

    • @macnavi

    One thing I've learned to do is skip any Linus-related video that has to do with old tech, since they have a tendency to talk out their ass even more than usual, due to poor research, really bad ability to actually contextualize what they are looking at, and the fact that- honestly most of their staff think Optical drives are archaic and old, and that contempt tends to leak into any videos about vintage tech.

    • @startrekmike
      @startrekmike Месяц назад

      Floppy discs were still quite popular in 99. You may not have personally bought many or dealt with them all that much but CD-R's were not at a point where they were super cheap and pretty much every system still had a floppy drive. Likewise. A lot of folks in both educational and business environments still relied on floppy discs simply because they were cheap and relatively reliable.

Thank you for helping set the record straight, I don't know how many times I had to talk till I was blue in the face about incorrect information someone was plugging along. The sad thing is once misinformation is repeated it becomes a false truth. One example is with people calling the computer a hard drive. Not realizing that when someone said their Hard drive isn't working you are then trying to diagnose the problem and discovered it was actually more than the drive itself. While the computer box itself was often referred to the CPU - we all know the CPU is actually one of the chips inside the computer.

    I have an older tray-loader, Rev D, that has a few issues. 1. Cannot install the original OS (8.6) using original restore media, I only get a gray screen. 2. Cannot sleep in OS 9 or OS X - get an error saying I am missing system software in order to sleep (just did a clean install and upgraded to 9.2.2). 3. The monitor settings says it is a "VGA Display", and the resolution is always locked at 1024x768@60Hz with 256 colours, from the display turns on, with no other options available. Any idea what this could be? The iMac already has the latest firmware, and I've tried resetting NVRAM/PRAM, changing the battery and reseating VRAM stick.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  2 года назад +1

      My guess would have been firmware, but you mention it's already updated. I would guess that maybe the original install media has something that the generic 9 does not have. Which is a long shot, but plausible. Does the original media read OK on another machine? I'd check out the Low End Mac Facebook group, maybe someone there has had the same issue before and can help. :-)

    So, some 2001 models didn't have a VGA port, but all trayloaders had the normal D15 Mac RGB port that could output VGA up to 1600x1200, maybe even more. The DV models couldn't do anything but the internal resolutions. The AMP connector looks slightly like a Molex connector of the era, but the origin of the Molex misconception is from some doofus circa 1998-ish claiming ACHSUALLY it's a Molex, when it was referred to more correctly as "HDD Power Connector" or such until then (in contrast to 3.5" floppy power connector). Molex however did make the ATX motherboard power connectors, but not the PCIe video card power connectors that look similar. The former are called Molex Mini-Fit Jr and the latter are just some PCIe proprietary video connector things. Apple did use standard Molex Micro-Fit Jr connectors on the motherboards of Mac Pro models. The Micro-Fit Jr are the successor of Mini-Fit Jr. They have unique keying per connector count and carry as much current as the larger Mini-Fit connectors do.

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, but as we chatted about in the live chat, the DB15 video port on the first revisions of the iMac G3 was not an approved method of video out by Apple. And let's be honest, it's not a user friendly solution for non tech-savvy users.
      Correct, the Late 1999 and Summer 2000 models didn't have VGA ports on the low end models. But I believe the Early 2001 models all had VGA ports. Some companies, including Apple, still sold older models during this time. So yes, it was possible to buy an iMac without a VGA port during this time, but it wasn't really part of the new Early 2001 model lineup. It was just old stock.
      The whole point in my video was to reply to Alex's claims that "nobody used" the VGA port on the iMac DV. I was pointing out it was a requested feature and was very useful.
      The iMac DV models which included VGA ports also came with two plastic covers in the accessories box, one with a VGA port cut out, and one without. So even on those models you could swap out the plastic cover if you decided you did, or didn't want the port shown. I agree though, it's not easy to swap it out!
      Yes, the iMac DV could only mirror video out. And yes, I goofed on calling the hard drive power cable a "molex" connector.

    I have the 450mhz Summer 2000 G3 and it's pretty awesome. Runs Deus Ex pretty well and OS X 10.3 perfoms just fine. It may not be a gaming PC, but it's definitely a PC that plays games and is quite good for late 90s and even a few early 2000s games.

    Squashed point there. It's never was a support problem. ATI Rage was out for PCs, and it sucked there too. ATI was always buggy, and their bloated Catalyst software slowed down any system, Mac or PC.

    Many of the people at LMG have no idea what they're doing. The channel isn't about accuracy or integrity anymore. It seems to be feeding a narrative that older is bad and newer is better. When you take into account period use cases and software, the iMac was pretty good.
    If you look at the current M1 iMac in retrospect in 20 years, it's going to seem like a pile of hot garbage compared to whatever is out in 20 years. That's just how the march of technology works.

  • @aleksandrbmelnikov
    @aleksandrbmelnikov 10 месяцев назад

    Hot Garbage? It's like saying XP was trash. Maybe by today, but not back then. It was light and clean for an OS, and people loved getting out of 9.x~whatever. I remember when MS-DOS 6.22 was the 💩-to-get. If someone can't write a better OS, then they have no place bashing what's out there.

    I had the best model..DV SE.. Still have it actually! hahaha.. Its has a dvd-cd (read, burn/write).. Vocal assistant (that i could name as i fancied (for some time i lovingly called her "hey bitch".. hahaha.. It was great for music recording, video and photo editing.. Even had an app to create artificial 3d worlds.. just to name a few.. you can't judge it unless you actually used one (and i did for years) .. it was actually a lot more customizable than most of the computers ive had or worked with since.. of course the tech has evolved.. but yeah they were great machines.. oh!..airport too!.. screen mirroring.. they were all in one.. basically a 36pound portable computer lol.. yes they were something else.. nothing compared.

  • @NetzDotCom
    @NetzDotCom Год назад

    Here’s some mistake that you made:
    1:49 - You say iMac G3 went up to 600 MHz but there was a last revision of iMac G3 (Summer 2001) that have a CPU that runs at 700 MHz (but that configuration was discontinued in January 2002).
    10:03 & 10:18 - You say that iMac G3 (as the whole product line) was discontinued in January 2002 but they actually was discontinued it a bit later than you expected, in March 2003 (when eMac (an CRT iMac G4) was starting to sale not just for educational market, but for the general market as well).
    I could correct myself if you meant about that maxed out 700 MHz iMac G3 (that I already mentioned in this comment) I don’t know.
    12:26 - ATI Rage 128, at the rev. B model? Original iMac G3 (a rev. A one) used a ATI Rage 2c with 2MB of VRAM with expansion slot for VRAM, rev. B upgraded to ATI Rage Pro with 6MB (2 base + 4 expanded) of VRAM, rev C. (the “5 colors” one) “upgraded” with ATI Rage Pro Turbo with (same) 6MB of VRAM (like the previous revision), the “Slot Loading” revision models upgraded with ATI Rage 128 VR with 8MB of VRAM and (finally) “Summer 2000” and onward models upgraded with ATI Rage 128 Pro with (same) 8MB (and in later revisions 16MB) of VRAM.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  Год назад

      1) I’m referring specifically to the “Early 2001” line of iMacs, thus the graphics on the screen at 1:42. In that line up the fastest machine was a 600 MHz model. Only the later “Summer 2001” line up had a 700 MHz option.
      2) The January 2002 is listed on EveryMac and MacTracker for this series. However, yes, two slower models were discontinued later in March 2003. They axed the 700MHz one in January and kept the slower 500 MHz and 600 MHz models around until March. This made the eMac and iMac G4 look far more attractive.
      The point is Alex was incorrect when he said Apple’s Intel CPU switch occurred “right after” the iMac G3. And his machine wasn't "the fastest".
      3) I meant “Rage” graphics for the original iMac model. When I said “Rage 128” I misspoke.

    I agree with everything in this video except for the idea that Mac OS X runs well on a G3. It just doesn't. I have memories of running Panther on a G3 back in '03 '04... I was a patient person then.

      Tiger ran pretty well on my iMac G3 450MHz back in the day. Granted, it wasn't the best machine, but with 768MB of memory it was pretty solid and fine for web browsing, email, and some games.
      Of course this was back when Tiger was new, so the internet's heavy use of flashy CSS and HTML 5 stuff didn't exist yet. Mac OS X runs great on G4 systems, but if needed you can get by on a G3, but you need tons of memory.

    I must differ with you on the slot loading G3’s.
    Like Apple’s later DVD drives they were horrible.
    They frequently stopped ejecting and once they failed, if you could not find a replacement drive or an external cd drive, you were screwed.
    Replacement drives for all the G3’s are really hard to find now.
    The same goes for DVD drives for 2008-2010 IMacs as well.
    Bezels could be fixed or you could get a replacement.
    I had 3 G 3’s and an IMac DV & had to recycle all of them because of the drive issue.
    I intend to get a G3 and a G4 again this year so I can play my beloved older Mac games.
    And I still use 3 of my 6 Apple ][s as well.
    Apple 2 still forever !🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎

    Totally disagree with your comments about IO it really was lacking at he time, you had to use one USB for the keyboard and another on the keyboard for the mouse leaving you two USB ports but it’s worth noting the spare port on the keyboard would not power anything that needed any significant power, at the time printers and scanners were separate, digital cameras where becoming all the rage, the majority of people still kept documents on floppy disc so you’d likely need an external floppy drive and if you used it for anything creative like a graphics tablet or midi (via usb) you would need to pay for an expensive usb hub, at the time most PCs had two usb ports on the front, two on the back and and the keyboard and mouse were PS2 type so didn’t take up ports, then there were still the parallel port for you printer and scanner and the normal serial ports for some older accessories and devices. Most cheap laptops of that time had more IO so the iMac really was lacking, I had two G3 iMacs including a DV version and I also owned and built a lot of PCs from that era
