The i5 12400 is simply an incredible deal. I recommend it to everyone building a midrange build. It’s a no brainer. On the lower end I always recommend the 12100. I don’t recommend AMD simply due to the all the issues AMD platforms have given me over the years. Including AM4.
"I don’t recommend AMD simply due to the all the issues AMD platforms have given me over the years. Including AM4." Huh? AMD's AM4 has been the most stable and long-lived platform I've ever used, and I've been using PCs since my first AMD 386/40MHz back in 1991. This sounds more like an paid Intel comment than an honest report of user experience.
@@Moshe_Dayan44 Maybe, his experienced with AMD wasn't good and that's okay, My first PC (i3-10 MSI H410) and 2nd PC (i3-12 Asus B660) GTX1650, gotta be honest, the first one gave me a TERRIBLE experience with ~2 years BSOD every few days/hours. ps: *I tried everything :v* I've thought about giving AMD a try since but in my place every good AMD part costs 10-20% more than Intel + out of stock, even pre-built. So for the sake of my wallet and peace of mind, my 2nd PC is Intel, and it works great this time, amazingly tbh.
I could have really used this 2 weeks ago when i started buy my parts. but i'm actually building my 1st pc today, so its still nice to see this and be able to compare this to what i bought
4:33 You say the RTX 3060 is a more reasonable buy for an i5 12400 build, but I respectfully disagree. If you go with a 3070 or 3080, it's assumed you will be gaming at 1440p or even 4k, where the GPU matters a lot more than the CPU. Benchmarks show that the i5 12400 will not bottleneck a 3080 at those resolutions. So, for a dedicated gaming PC, my advice would be to just stick to an i5, save money, and buy yourself the biggest graphics card your budget allows.
Hi Jason. Just finished the Intel Core i5-12400F gaming desktop computer build yesterday using the links in your video description. Thanks for this great and informative video.
I just purchased AVGPC Quiet Series Gaming PC Intel Core i5 6 Core 12400F up to 4.40 GHz, 16GB DDR4, GeForce GTX 1660. Your videos helped me decide on what pc to buy. Thank you. I do multiple things such as streaming, editing and rendering as well as VR gaming. Just subscribed.
Great work on the 12400. This and 5600X are probably the most popular gaming PC for most people. It will be great if there is a link to show how to remove the power limit for 12400. In addition, what will be the performance impact if the users do remove the power limit for the 12400. Due to the crazy pricing on the GPU. Unfortunately most of us have to limit our budget on the CPU/MB and other components.
Thanks!!! Planning on doing a "how to set up your pc after build" kind of video where I'll show how to do this. Unfortunately each bios (gigabyte, asus, asrock, msi) are different for this.
The Problem with the higher Memory frequency has almost no effect to the Performance increase is due to the fact the timings are higher on Memory with higher frequency - in this case. If you would have used a Memory with higher than 3600 MT/s (3600 MHZ = 2x1800 MHz), the timings would get relatively lower on the Memory although the CPU does not support that high frequency. In this case the Memory would reduce it´s supported frequency to the highest the CPU provides, the timings would get lower as well, so the performance increase should be significantly higher. (usually the mainboard always provides much higher memory-frequencies than the CPU for it´s Generation/Socket). Not to mention the much faster, but also expensive DDR5 (maybe not in future)...-> Much higher Memory Frequency -> lower Memory timings -> higher FPS It´s also to mention if you have only one or up to six memory modules and if the memory has one or two ranks, this would boost the FPS as well a bit, if there were more.
Like your build, you packed a lot of value into that video! Love how you show where you can get (or is some cases, not get) extra performance for more money.
I also found that when comparing more premium MB's prices for 5600x and 12400 the total cost was almost the same, I went with Intel this time, because the platform is newer, and the b660 board I got had 2,5gbe, which was notably lacking on the b550 offerings
Although I just got a 2.5Gbps modem (for getting 1+Gbps speed), there's a serious lack of 2.5Gbps routers at the moment. You can find some switches, but I can't find any decent Routers with multiple 2.5Gbps (for both input from modem, and output to LAN)
@@jan-k7x1c I plan on getting an ASUS AX-86U that you can do that with, but its only one port. If I want to have the modem input 2.5gbps its locked to that port, with no way of distributing the 2.5Gbps out via ethernet. Might have to get the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX6000. It's one of the only ones
For cooling, you gotta start recommending the Gammaxx 400. It comes with mounting hardware for just about every relevant CPU socket and the brackets for adding a second fan and the cooling is fantastic. All for under $20 and if you get the blue version they're only $15. I'm using it (with a cheap (3pack for $10), no name second fan added to make a push pull configuration) to overclock my 5700G iGPU to 2400MHz at 1.3volts and temps still stay in the 40s while playing Cyberpunk.
Yes that is one I often recommend! Some people don't like the LED which cannot be turned off, so I typically mention the ID Cooling one which is a couple of dollars more.
Bro i m buying a 12600kf and for that will deepcool gammax be enough?? Consider normal room temperature is around 35 and no ac coz in my room there's AC but no space for computer desk so will setup my computer in hall..and if deepcool gammax is enough then which one should i buy gammax 400 v2 or gammax 400 pro..can afford both of these ,so pls tell which one would be nest for cooling
@@AyushGarg82 the Gammaxx 400 is basically a Hyper 212 EVO clone so your 12600f should be fine especially since it can't overclock. As for the V2 or the Pro, I'd say if you happen to have an extra 1200mm fan I'd get the V2 (that's the route I took but I lucked put and was given a fan that cost about as much as the Gammaxx itself) but if not and there's room in your budget for it, the second fan for the Pro model will definitely help. One thing you need to do is make sure you can fit the Gammaxx in your case. If you're using PCpartpicker and already have the case you want selected, the Gammaxx (and other coolers that won't fit) won't be listed when you go to select a CPU cooler and same thing if you pick your cooler first.
@@Stonerman135 bro m choosing antec df600 flux (coz i love its looks) and gammax 400 v2 is being shown in the pc part picker but the gammax 400 pro is not available with any case so i think there's some problem in the website..can u pls check the cabinet and tell whether it will support gammax 400 pro? motherboard i will be buying is msi pro b660m a wifi.....And one more thing if possible can u give your social media I'd where i can contact u? Awesome detailed advice! Don't understand the part about the need for 12600K to pair with 3080 for 4K gaming though. Why? Coz often being GPU bound, isn't the 12400F good enough? I still believe in the saying that @4K gaming, CPU don't really matter.
I was wondering about this as well, I was about to go for the 12400F + 3080 combo too. I really wish he would've elaborated more on the reasons why this is supposedly a bad idea, since his videos are otherwise so in-depth.
Great video! Thank you so much for making it! I JUST purchased this CPU 2 days ago and I'm glad to see that my choices for this first build of mine are good. This will be a learning experience but I can do it.
With the I5 12400 I'd start with a better upgrade path on the motherboard and spend more on a full ATX Z690 board in the $200 price range compared to a upper end B660M at the $170 range. My choice would be the Gigabyte Z690 UD DDR4.

A genuine sincere thanks for this nice informative video from a 13 year long pc gamer and builder, who, thinks of themselves as tech savvy compared to the general population, but was a bit "out of the loop" with cutting edge stuff. After dealing with a very frustrating past few months dealing with either a failing 3700x couple year old ryzen and/or the apparently widespread Ryzen "fTPM" issue, I said screw it and ordered a 12500 setup. Was only $10 more than the 12400. I ordered the black 120mm ID cooling tower cooler per your suggestion. I'm pairing it with 32gb 3600 ram, a 2tb Sk Hynix p41 gen4 7000mb nvme(went a bit overboard on this drive, but, I've kept my Samsung regular 840 for nearly 10 years, I'm in it with this nvme for the long haul), and reusing my existing 3070. Will make a quite potent 1440p high refresh rate gaming pc. Unfortunately, myself and some others still suffer from the stuttering and lagging with the fTPM issue even after venders released a bios update in May, a few months after AMD acknowledged the problem. When myself and others posted about still suffering from the fTPM problems, we were essentially met with crickets and tumbleweeds basically being left out to dry and abandoned. Idk if they expected us to just sit here and suffer, but, there is definitely something funky with the CPU after multiple new motherboards and new OS installs tried, no virus, temps ok, drives checked out ok, still the same problem when trying my old gpu too. I was just truly stumped and it was getting depressing so I threw in the towel on that build and ordered the 12th gen i5 which isn't affected by the ftpm stuff like ryzens are to hopefully ride out the rest of this console gen trouble free on w10, I'm waiting a few more years on win11 lol. I genuinely tried for a long time and did everything I could do. This will be my first intel since the good old 2600k. I didn't end up streaming like I thought I would so the extra threads on the ryzen 7 didn't benefit me much. Encoding can be offloaded to the GPU these days anyway. I sure do miss the good old days on windows 7 with stone cold reliable ivy bridge/sandy bridge with set it and forget it 1600mhz ram or even 1333. Great find on the 120mm ID cooler, I kinda grimaced when I saw how much the old venerable Hyper 212 shot up in price these days. I took a "gamble" on an up and coming tower cooler many years ago on a tinkerer build for fun with the very well regarded Cryorig h7 and it cooled an OC'd 8320E very well. Very intrigued to try out the ID cooler. I would have gotten that cheap $19.99 Deepcool Gammax v2 but didn't want to have to wait for them to send me the intel 1700 socket adapter...the ID cooler said it was already compatible.
You are by far the best PC building channel out there, no nonsense and always keeps me gripped. Recently built my first build successfully based fully on parts you have suggested. So thankful for your work and information 💪💪
I've been watching and comparing gpu and components for the last year. i resurrected an i7-860 with more memory, a ssd and a gtx 770. at 5760x1080 I'm still playing couple year old games (@3840x760) lol. this video helped a lot and whilst not the most powerful, i think the upgrade will be significantly noticeable.
If you're on a budget I recommend sticking with the stock cooler and spending that extra $30 or so that you would've spent on the cooler on getting better peripherals or ram or a slightly better gpu or whatever then you can get a cooler later on
Good info. In my case it was after the fact since I already recently (March '23) built a PC using the 12400F with an ASUS Prime H670 Plus D4 and a 3060 Ti, but in watching this video it sounds like I did ok. I waited an extra year for prices and availability to improve and was able to come in at around $900 including a bump up on the tower and 750W PSU, but re-using my existing 1 and 2 TB SSD's with the OS from my old PC already installed. I'm very happy with the new build so far. My old PC (which still works, btw) is from 2009 with upgrades over the years on everything but the mobo and processor. Of course the new one is light years better.
Awesome video! Due to the current GPU price drops, I’ve decided to begin building my first PC, it’s an i5-11600k RTX 3060 build, I’ve began buying my parts and will probably wait and hope for the GPUs to drop a bit more ( the GPU will probably be the last part I buy), needless to say I’m very excited. To better GPU prices!
@@PCBuilderChannel Yo can i really ask, im gonna upgrade PC. Gonna buy Intel I5 12400 but i play game more instead than doing some task or office stuff but i dont have any VGA/GPU on my pc. And im thinking which one the best between 12400 vs 5600G. But many friends told me that 12400 WITHOUT VGA is better than 5600G.You think 12400 can handle any games like for example Valorant or Apex?
Loved the video, this time around i'm considering building either with a 12400F to may upgrade on 13th gen or go straight with a 12700F idk. And probably will wait next gen gpus cause my laptop is 3060. Either way i don't think we will see msrp before the end of summer but by this time RTX 4000 and RX 7000 will be not far away so there's also that point.

I came upon your channel and love your content (and your no nonsense delivery! Lol) 👍🙏. But I gotta say I still I find $1000 USD for a budget build not so budget lol so I'm going to wait for prices to drop more (hopefully). Till then will continue laptop gaming 🤪
Great video Jason. After binge watching your videos i recently bought 12400F and amd 6600 gpu combination pc. It comes with asus prime h610m-K motherboard. It was a pre build and didn't have option to change motherboard to H660M unfortunately. It was a great price at the time i bought so i had to buy it :) I wonder if i can still increase the power limiter from that motherboard thought?
If you plan to game on 1440p, there isn’t much fps difference on 12400f or 12600k or 5600x. I suggested get the 12400f and later upgrade to raptor lake 13th. I am currently running i5 12400f on 1440p myself.

thank you very much with the tips im going for 12600k but this will still help with my choices like the ram i was very suprised to see how lottle diffrence 3200 vs 3600 was
Glad you liked it! Yes, these CPUs are so fast that as long as you hit the minimum needed not to bottleneck there isn't a ton of benefit going up. I didn't test with 4000 speed memory because why spend that money when you could just jump up to the 12600K instead? But for the 12600K it might be worth it.
I have a i5 12600k on this motherboard, my cooler was the id cooling se226xt, it comes with lga1700 kit and it managed to keep temps down to 80 degrees on a 15minutes stress test 🎉
@@PCBuilderChannel Thanks for the reply! My case is the IM01 or tecware fusion as we know it here in Malaysia. The case is very interesting and in my opinion very underrated. Consider it a SFF matx/ large itx. It supports a ton of hardware and if you are willing to pay the itx tax you can go AIO/air cooling whereas if you are on budget you can go matx + air cooling. I mentioned the se226xt as it is a just fit in that case. Gpu support is also great too pretty much every card could fit there. For me the cons are, slightly worse build quality(compared to Nr 200), no included riser(if you want to mount vertically) and no usb c front io other than this it is a great case!
Just built an i5-12400 on an Asus z690-plus wifi d4, 32GB ddr4 3200 ram, 1tb M.2 and 4tb hard drive. All of it, tries, to come together with a RX 6500XT GPU. The GPU is temporary, hopefully. Everything is in a NZXT H510 case. This build is a lot better than what I've been running for a few years (i7-6700k). Going to be building another one, for my son, soon. We are going to go with the i5-12400K instead.
Hi Great review, I have this processor and it's been great, I recently upgraded my GPU to a 7900XT and now it gets bottlenecked in several games, what would you recommend as a replacement to work with my new GPU. Don't mind switching to AMD but would prefer to just upgrade the processor. Cheers

Thank you for supporting the channel! Congrats on your build.
Love your videos, always so informative and I love your energy
Thanks for the feedback! It means a lot to us!
Thanks! I'm looking at building 2 budget PCs this year. I'm still thinking of budget, but your videos really help!
Nice! Check out our Best Budget Gaming Builds 2022 video on the channel too! Might be helpful
Not to mention the much faster, but also expensive DDR5 (maybe not in future)...-> Much higher Memory Frequency -> lower Memory timings -> higher FPS
It´s also to mention if you have only one or up to six memory modules and if the memory has one or two ranks, this would boost the FPS as well a bit, if there were more.
Like your build, you packed a lot of value into that video! Love how you show where you can get (or is some cases, not get) extra performance for more money.
Really glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching
@@Kermeous I got one were you can reconfigure the WAN port to 2,5gbe but it’s only available in Germany
It's one of the only ones
huge thanks for this video! although I chose the right combo by myself, having it confirmed by you is great relief.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed and congrats on your build
Must say I don't have it yet because I struggle on choosing case :/ is big difference from user perspective between ATX and smaller boards?
Wait asus tuf b660 is bad?
I have some doubts in other pc parts as well
My 6 year old 400 w/ 2 fans in push pull still cools my 6600k (4.5ghz) to 60c max. Wonder how it holds up to newer CPU that pulls more power.
This is the exact thing my cousin was looking for , I'll share it with him , thank you
Great! Best of luck with their build!
Awesome! Best of luck with your build!
Which mobo u used with this cpu
With the I5 12400 I'd start with a better upgrade path on the motherboard and spend more on a full ATX Z690 board in the $200 price range compared to a upper end B660M at the $170 range. My choice would be the Gigabyte Z690 UD DDR4.
Agree with this too but do you recommend DDR5 for better future proofing?
I just found your videos and I love it! Exactly what we need. GOOD JOB

@@PCBuilderChannel sir what do you think about asus h610m a?
maybe it's features are very less but...
are it's vrms better than b660m ds3h?
like both are same price, but

but asus h610m a is high price h610 mobos, so its vrms maybe better than b660 ds3h
@@PCBuilderChannel or do I take Gigabyte B660m DS3H or Msi B660m pro-E?
just returned home, with my new PC Build with i5 12400f and RTX 3060, with CL16 3600MHz 16(8*2)GB RAM , corsair 650w 80+bronze psu & monitor Gigabyte G27F, after lot of much much valuable lessons and inputs from your videos. Looking forward to set it up tomorrow morning & enjoy the weekend ahead and days ahead.
Was intending to go with 5600x but the price wasn't fitting well with the budget and shooting stars with taxes applied here in Eastern India. So, team blue was the choice, I had to take.
I was a bit skeptical about missing out on 3060Ti but the price again was a thing of an issue...hope my system works well for my needs. How's my build looking ?? :)
Thanks yet again Jason!

Great timing to see this video
Another great video. Thanks, Jason!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching
That's sounds really frustrating! Glad you got it sorted
You are by far the best PC building channel out there, no nonsense and always keeps me gripped. Recently built my first build successfully based fully on parts you have suggested. So thankful for your work and information 💪💪
Glad to help! Congrats on the build!
I just ordered a I5-12400f w/ a tomahawk and DDR4 3200 CL16. Thanks a lot for the guidance. Subbed
Awesome! Best of luck with your build!! And thank you for the sub

Amazing video, there's no question left unanswered.
Thanks for the great feedback! We really appreciate. Hope this helps you build!
Another great video Jason
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying!
If you're on a budget I recommend sticking with the stock cooler and spending that extra $30 or so that you would've spent on the cooler on getting better peripherals or ram or a slightly better gpu or whatever then you can get a cooler later on
Exactly what I was looking for 🗣️💯
Awesome! hope its helpful!
Just subbed because this type of ideas giving videos is what I need

Upgrading my FX8350, Asus Crosshair Formula Z mobo. With a MSI Pro B660m and Intel i5 12400f tommorow. Very excited!
The silicon power ram kit is really good value. Ive used 4 of them on different pc's and never had any complaints
Yes they run like champs! I really like the ARGB ones (used in this build). They look great and are really cheap.
This is precise. Good work!
Glad you think so! Thank you for watching
fantastic comparison, just what we needed, no bullsht. kudos

Best of luck with your new build! We have a 12600k build on the channel too you might want to check out

Great video Jason. After binge watching your videos i recently bought 12400F and amd 6600 gpu combination pc. It comes with asus prime h610m-K motherboard. It was a pre build and didn't have option to change motherboard to H660M unfortunately. Thanks for the video. Always fond of budget builds.

If you plan to game on 1440p, there isn’t much fps difference on 12400f or 12600k or 5600x. I suggested get the 12400f and later upgrade to raptor lake 13th.
I am currently running i5 12400f on 1440p myself.

i was very suprised to see how lottle diffrence 3200 vs 3600 was
Glad you liked it! Yes, these CPUs are so fast that as long as you hit the minimum needed not to bottleneck there isn't a ton of benefit going up. I didn't test with 4000 speed memory because why spend that money when you could just jump up to the 12600K instead? But for the 12600K it might be worth it.
Great informative video as always. 👍

I have a i5 12600k on this motherboard, my cooler was the id cooling se226xt, it comes with lga1700 kit and it managed to keep temps down to 80 degrees on a 15minutes stress test 🎉
nice!
Congrats on your build!
