Back in 2004 I used to tour with two RG100ES half stacks and all I had was a volume pedal to roll back for a 'clean' tone lolol
What’s a “clean” tone? 🤔😏😂
Hey whatever gets the job done haha
On the other note we can all now pre order Jim Roots Signature pickups and actually buy his Signature Straps through Dimarzio. Just bought my straps
Heberert Aguirre not the new fender tho
@@andy_182
No just the pick ups unfortunately
Hi Ryan or "Fluff" if 'U like ! As I told Ray, Randall "RG100ES" were good amps but the feeling of a tube amp is different ! I played it during the last '90 then I took a second hand Warhead ! I know what 'U mean "volume pedal" just to change drive channel into clean ! That amp was really a " Vulgar Dislpay of Power" ! \m/
I picked up one of these and a 2x12 Peavey cab for $100 on marketplace. Epic score.
This proves all those a-holes who say only tube amps are good enough for high gain. One of metals greatest guitarists used this.
Tru tru
Andy Bradford True. But even by his own admission, Dime’s tone got so much better when he went to Krank tube amps. But that being said, Randall amps were always my favorite solid state amps for metal and hard rock if a good tube amp wasn’t available.
My only amp for years was a late 90s / early 2000s USA made jagged letter Peavey Transtube Special 212 which is all solid state. Its stock speakers are OK, but once I added a switch to run it only as a head, holy hell does it punch. Now it's still my backup amp and it handles anything you throw at it from blues to djent. Check one out.
Zach Coma Yes! The older Peavey Bandits and Transtube are killer amps! Their overdrive sounds really good but they are great pedal platform amps as well.
Dimebags tone was also pretty shitty and this amp does too.
Solid state = metal
We all know Dime’s trick was the blue MXR EQ
Yuppppp
Don't forget the furman pq3 3's and 4's he used with the blue mxr.
Hi Ryan & Rob ! I love Pantera too !!! If I can say , Dime's gears on fabled CFH were :
- Randall RG-100ES Head
- Randall Jaguar cab
s and Celestion speakers
- Furman PQ4 Parametric EQ [Rack]
- MXR Flanger/Doubler [Rack]
- Some Harmonizer and Delay
- Rocktron Guitar Silencer
- Vox Wah-Wah
- Dunlop® Cry Baby® GCB95
Pantera guys started recording sessions in 1989, the album was released on July 24, 1990 ! The sound was so modern for that time so nowadays !!! A great job was done by producer Terry Date on mixing console !
@@lucasiciliano he used a pq3 on cfh then the pq4 the rest of the albums
@@stephencarter2780 Yes Stephen Dime used a PQ3 rack on CFH, then Furman released PQ4 as update of previus model ! 🤔 I'm not sure if MXR 6 band Graphic EQ on CFH, maybe yes in front of amp ! Dime is the ruling King ! 👑🤘🔥💪🎸🎸🎸
I absolutely love Dimebag, but I really appreciate that you didn't just play a Pantera song and actually showed what the amp was capable of in a modern metal setting.
Thanks Chris! Yeah I wasn’t going to do the cliche thing, I actually wanted to use the amp as if I was using it
@@xanderraymondcharles Well that earned you a subscriber here. I'm always interested in older cheap gear and how it performs in a real situation. One of the best metal amps I've ever played was an Ibanez Tone blaster and after that I was always searching for the best at the bottom of the barrel.
To each their own. I have an RG100ES and I love it! I love the tone you got with it too, but I definitely get that it doesn't speak to everyone. That's why there is so much diversity in amplifiers.
Sammy Duet from Acid Bath used these amps! He would boost it with an ibanez tube screamer or a metalzone.
I think on when the kite string pops he combined it with a marshall jcm800 used the two together
@@jackko21 That is precisely what he did.
@@DaisyHead666 i forgot what mike sanchez used
@@jackko21 he used a peavey butcher with a rocktron preamp distortion rack
if anybody here has one of these amps i cant recommend the mxr 6 band enough. it tightens up the amp so much
They got a 10 band too right
jaychen yeah they do have a 10 band. I’ve never used one so I can’t say if it has the same affect as the 6 band
New one with LED's but are very bright. I use the boss 7 band in my effects loop and an east river od in front to tighten up the woofiness.
jaychen my biggest problem with that amp for a long time was the woofiness. I eventually bought the 6 band and a furman pq3 and now everything is perfect. It obviously does the pantera thing extremely well but slipknot and stuff like that sounds good too with it
I heard last night that the pedal switch that comes with the amp allows both channels to be combined and that the tone knob is push-pull for a creamy option that's less flat/sterile.
Can't wait to see that 100K Subscriber Plaque hanging on your wall, man. This channel is definitely going places in 2020!
Man thank you so much! That’s the absolute dream 🙌
@@xanderraymondcharles it will happen soon!
2:34 is polarizing. Either you like it or hate it.
You are literally the happiest metal player ever. Lol. Whe everyone plays metal they're like 😡😡😡 but you're like 😃😃😃. Lol wish I had this amp but I can't justify owning the real deal as a bedroom player.
Haha I can’t help the smiles. I always appreciate you stopping in!
MobileDecay Your abit special and obviously not a metalhead or haven’t seen much of the metal community because most metalheads are happy and smile heaps not everyone is just angry
@@calebwd03 keep it civil. he was just saying I smile a lot. No need to get nasty
@@calebwd03 Lol. Have a great day. 😊
Same thing but then i realized justifications are overrated so im trying to find one at a bit of a cheaper price probably gonna get the reissue
I played through this same head in the early and mid 90’s. Same gray fuzzy covering too! Had the matching cab!
This is the kind of guy u wanna have a beer with ...really mellow and down to earth ...he has a great personality for RUclips ..id watch this guy over 100s of popular guitarist on youtube ..i hope this dude makes it big on youtube ..or atleast whatever that means to him
Thank you so much. That means the world to me
No problem man!! ..ill be sure to stay tuned for more awesome content
In 1983 I stumbled onto a Randall rg80 and I used that amp for 30 years. Before I got that amp I didn't know what Distortion tone to choose. Pretty much that has been my tone for many years. My friend used to hide it behind his Marshall at gigs. The rg80 had a push poll treble pot. That made all the difference.
Hi Ray ! I really like this video ! I agree with You about own taste ! I love tube amps like ‘U, I mean tube sound is totally different about solid state type ! Tube amps are different for creamy sound, saggy distortion, engineering and mainly for EQ stadium, I mean how high frequencies work on dependence of mids or bass and vice versa ! This was Dime's Amp for a lot of years and he worked ever with solid state amps, I mean Randall X2, Dime by Dean Amplification etc ... Last Signature was a Tube amp, "Krankenstein" by Krank Amplification ! We couldn't know about Dime's new taste after 2004, but RG100ES was “Monsters of Rock” 's amp played in Moskow (1991), as 'U said an Iconic Amp ! Thanks a lot for the test and Thanks to Mr. Herb, amp owner !
Hey Luca! Yes I don’t mind solid state at all, but tubes are just my thing! Thank you for watching all my videos!
Hi Ray ! Thanks a lot ! I agree with 'U about dynamic of tube amps, they are really live, they breath ! Notthing against solid state amps, just different feelings ! I am your new follower and I am really getting attached to your channel !
@@lucasiciliano Hi Ray now 'U got two new followers !
I own two of the RG100es’s and it’s definitely an acquired sound. Regardless it was a decent play through. Would definitely have advised running some sort of EQ in the loop or in front of the amp.
Video was fucking amazing dude! Love your channel!
Thanks Josh!
Honestly dude, I don’t know how you’re not up in subscribers with guys like Ola, Fluff and others on here. You’re stuff is quality and the perfect guitar geek channel.
I guess cause ola burps. idk. lol you are right though.
@@richardshank7659he also claps😮
that was cool, it was actually cool to see someone say they didnt like it, we all know even dime said he got it and tweeked it, anyone who ever read Riffer Madness knows the big difference was putting in that blue mxr eq, he had to have it, and it had to be the blue one lol, but even before he left us he was tone chasing, thats how he unded up with Krank, I would to see a vid on you jamming one of Dimes Krank amps, or even his Randall Warhead, the RG100 was just the beginning man, I'm probably one of the biggest dime fans ever, (well i have seen some pretty die hard fans though lol) well, in my eyes i am i'm just broke thats why i rock low end and reps, all i got is a randall rg80, but i'll be the first to say his tone isnt for everyone and thats a known fact, I really dig how you laid that across respectfully, super honest, got a sub from me my man!
Anyone that wants to hear GOOD DEMOs of Randall RG and other Randall amps. Check out Ola Englunds channel. He does it right, and don't need to tune his guitar down to Z to play music, He's a pro guitarist. That will give you a good idea of what a Randall SS amp can do. There's some others good vids on YT also of this amp.
Thank you for schooling these people. Unbelievable some of the things people say about this amp while doing everything incorrect!!
Horns up for Herb, what a legend 🤘
Hes the man! The real MVP
All hail the rg series!!!
Such iconic amps!
Dime is my favorite player obviously, but I also don't care for this amp for my tone. I do have the Amplitube Dimebag package to get my Pantera jams in when needed though.
I really agree. Great player but not my favorite tone
These things get brutal as hell with the furman and mxr 6 band like Dime used
My Randall RG's kick ass . I dont even do metal . Super cleans , super tight high gain . Built to last . Perfect for me .
It sounded alright in the mix but you can definitely hear a lot of fizz when played alone. Classic amp nonetheless made famous by Dime. However, if Dimebag never played one it would probably be obsolete and unheard of. Cool video bro!
I have to agree. I think the amp is mediocre at best, but because it’s so famous people love it haha. Thanks for stopping in!
Mediocre? Def Leppard used RG80 combos on Hysteria. 25 times platinum! I think it’s user error on your part
Hey Pure Grain you do know Phil Collen uses an RRM-250 power amp? For over 30 years.
@Pure Grain Liquor's Tool Shed exactly! You have to think of all the other thousands of dollars in his rig. And then when manipulating it further when mastering. Yeah it'll probably sound fantastic.
Hey Floyd look at the album! It says right on the back all amps used made by Randall
Also, if you ever get a chance to use a set of DiMarzio pickups with a solid state amp, I say go for it! Pickups like the Super Distortion have a bit more of a reduced top end, and while I’m not sure if that will help with the high end of the amp, it’s still worth a try, especially with a guitar with pickups consisting of a thick midrange like a lot of DiMarzio sets have going into an amp with a naturally scooped midrange.
My Friend has one. I have been playing through it every so Often. If you don’t have a foot switch both channels are running. But just turn gain and volume down on green channel for just the OD channel going.Amp is pretty good on its own. But def needs some help.
I am of the opinion that the biggest difference in tone, depth and attack comes from the speaker/cabinet. Still, at the end of the day, whatever works for you works.
I have two of those heads and a Randall 4X12 cabinet that came stock with Celestion speakers in it. I bought it in 1985. I used it for the better part of 30 years until I got my Marshall JCM 800 Kerry King Amp. The Randall was a great Amp. I used to get great tones out of it. I used to be able to simulate Michael Schenker's tone. I used a Boss equalizer pedal and I cut the mids out and boosted the lows and only the very last high frequency slider. Then I had my Cry Baby just slightly engaged. It sounded awesome. Just like Schenker's tone on Strangers in the Night. Those Randall amps are much more versatile than they get credit for. But they definitely work best for hard rock and heavy metal. You just have to know what you're doing and how to use them.
I’m starting to enjoy your content a lot more, it’s hard sometimes to get a realistic demo with all the editing done but i think your videos are closer to what the amp actually sounds like.
Hey thank you so much!
You need the bill Lawrence XL500 pickup bro
Not a dime tone video
Dimebag used a 6 bands EQ to boost the mids also reduced the mids on the amp and his Dimebucker is a little scooped so yeah EQ is super important to get the magic done right.
Hey Ray I encourage your experimenting with this amp, they are really amazing! Takes time to find your tone. Changing speakers really gets this sounding so different, I have a combo rg80 that has a JBL k120, it gets boogie mk1 tones.
Sounds like ripping up a newspaper.
Word
I vaguely remember in the 90s/ early 2000s when Dimes different amps were rolling out. I will always recommend the Krank amps for someone who is a big Pantera/ Damage Plan sound. To be both the Randall and the Dime amps didnt hit the high gain tone that was pure Dime
I had a krank rev I used to play 7s and 8 strings too I used to always watch that krank dimebag demo video on RUclips haha good comment
Appreciate your honesty ray, great vid!
Great vid Ray! Regarding solid state amps or combos...which one is the best for you? For playing metal I mean...
It's the amp from the Vivian Campbell ad...
Just found your channel and u sir have a new fan
Hey thanks so much Cody!
Sound seemed to get a bit lost in the mix. I liked it by itself though! But that’s the cool thing about there being SO MANY different amplifier types/sounds/brands; Everyone is allowed to discover their own sound, the sound that speaks to them! I’m similar to you, I personally like as much mid range as I can get. But great video, I’m so glad that you are just straight up and honest about your opinions! Too many people out there just saying everything sounds amazing just to not step on anyone’s toes. Love the channel brother, keep ‘em awesome videos coming! Peace.
Hell yes, so glad you did this vid and it suggested - subd!
Hey thank you so much!
An important part of Dime's tone was using a MXR six band EQ after a gate pedal to shape his tone heading into the amp, and then running the amp through a very scooped sounding cab
Great video as always. Keep it up
Thanks buddy! You as well keep grinding!
@@xanderraymondcharles Thanks Ray
George Lynch said that when he was endorsing Randall they hooked measuring devices up to his fav Marshall Plexi for the creation of the RG100ES/RG80ES amps. They tried to get them close to a tube amp and i think you can hear that in them. This is on Tone-Talk YT episode w/ George. LOL
That amo is not great when you're tuned down that low. Lacks the articulation, especially in the mids. It's just not meant for that sound.
The guitar is tuned too low,it doesn't sound good.
the best part of this video, in my opinion, is at the end when you gave your honest opinion saying that you don't like it. wish you all the best in 2020 and stay metal dude
Hey thank you so much for the kind words! I’ll always be honest in my opinions
May the metal be with...always.
Love this amp! I wonder how close the new gen RG100 is to sounding like this. It’s supposed to pretty much be a “remake.” For the price and tone these Randall SS Amos can’t be beat. Great job as always Ray
While I do enjoy the sound of the amp and Randall amps in general, I respect your opinion and agree that it does lack that mid range. Great review!
epic sound man !
Thanks buddy!
The carpeted ones are awesome! My rg80 kills my Century 2. Killer video!
Hey thanks so much!
Does anyone play a 6 string anymore?
I do and its all i wanna do
I think Periphery plays on 6 strings a lot. Sevendust, Phil X, Gus G, Rick Graham, Jason Hook, Jerry Cantrell. I know what you mean tho, just fuckin' with ya. 7 strings are great.
I still play 6 string, just tuned to C and B
The million dollar question is...does anyone not play droptune guitars anymore?
I can’t stand anything but a 6 string
Ive been looking for one for a while one of my favorites
Dime may have used these as part of his rig, but one must understand just how much crap he had in front of his amps. He had preamps and compressors coming out the wazoo. Simply buying this amp won't get you remotely close to Dime's tone. A Krankenstein or Randall Warhead would probably get you closer, but you would still have to process the shit out of the signal to get you close to his pre-Reinventing The Steel tones.
This isn’t a dime tone video. Thanks!
I disagree, he didn’t even use the warhead, only for cleans, he was still using rg’s sometimes, x2’s for damage, modded rev1’s up until his untimely demise, neither will get you close to his known tone, this RUclipsr didn’t even plug in the footswitch or jumper channel 1 to mute completely, this whole video is largely a fail.
@@dimebagriffs Ah IC. The Warhead is pretty much in the same as those Dimebuckers that he also never used in that case. He stuck with his Lawrence L500XL and SD Jazz pickups. I remember that I was actually interested in purchasing a Dimebucker when I was still in high-school, and not only are they insanely expensive, but they sound like shit in comparison to their Bill Lawrence equivalents.
All hail the mighty DIME. R.I.P
🙌🙌
Very nice demo!! Show us how you get your squealies.
Can you teach me how to get the Projects in The Jungle or Power Metal tone? I think those are great heavy metal tones as they sound rough. Like the start of All Over Tonight. It sounds like its going to eat you or something
Do you have that amp mic’d? I have one and it just hisses and hums when I have it plugged in, I don’t know what’s wrong I’m thinking it’s a ground issue, is it usually quiet when you first turn the amp on?
Randall is the shit, you should try out some of their tube stuff like the thrasher
Hey thanks for the suggestion! Maybe I can find one around lovally
Not sure if you knew but you could pull the treble knob out for more sustain I have one and it took me awhile
Dude I love SS heads these days. Using mine and loving it.
Phil said in an interview that Dime hated his sound for the longest time. Some had to put a eq pedal, noise gate etc to get a good sound out of that amp
Dime got a very good tone with these. He also got a ton of bee buzz hiss with it IMO.
Dimebag used a parametric EQ on the fx loop and a 6 bands eq on the front. You missed the chance to feel it's true power. I have one, I love it! If you use it like any other valves amp it just will not perform. I don't chase Dimebag's tone but I like how aggressive FET transistors are compared to the soft sound valves
always nice to hear the "people=shit" riff
Very bassy and more mid gain, but if you slam it with a boost they sound awesome, same with the Century.
As a huge fan of dime I want one of these amps bad. I'm rocking a spider iv and can get semi close with proco RAT but nothing beats the original
i traded this head for an early nineties Ibanez RG550 with a VERRRRY minor stress crack on the neck after the tuners.... also allegedly signed by Rob Zombie.
Watching these videos makes me wish that I never did it ;_;
Couldn't afford a decent cab then, I really should've just hung onto it ahhhh.
Hi! Love your videos)
But here is a question) I use 12-56 strings for the drop C tuning and have a little of fret buzz in the middle of the fretboard. Is it okay? Or could you advise how to fix it?)
Greetings from Ukraine!
Hello sounds like you need to adjust your truss rod
@@xanderraymondcharles Thanks a lot! Will try it.
You think you'll make a video of all the guitars you currently have?
coming soon!
The reason you didn`t like the sound was because you didn`t set it up right. Should have had the bass up a bit more, the gain on full( it thickens up the sound) and backed the treble off a bit. The secret to use these is how you use eq`s in front of it and it`s not really meant for that low of a tuning, just turnes into bad mush imo( Yes, I know he used this amp on Trendkill for Sandblasted and UIA)but most his stuff was a quarter step down. I say all of this cause I have one myself and I am not trying to be a dick or anything, just saying if you would have set it up better, I am pretty sure you would have liked the result a lot more 👍
Hey thanks for your comment The gain was on full. I wasn’t trying to emulate dimes tone at all. Just showing how the amp works by itself. It wasn’t a dimebag tone video, it was just a normal amp demo. Thanks!
He also was running both channels. And I agree, tuned to A??? WTF?!! Kid sucks, and made a legendary amp sound like complete ass! He eats too many Tide Pods! What a little fruit.
A some folks Abbott, and some don't! I'm confused with midrange as "creamy" I always thought that's where you got ur BITE out of a particular "set-up" but "creamy?" Well.... No Sir!
Well agree to disagree! The bite usually comes from the high end which this amp has a ton of. But anywho I appreciate your comment 🤘🤘thanks for stopping in!
Not every amp has the same midrange frequency and q (width of surrounding frequencies) as one another. Some maybe do have the midrange centered on the biting high mids, some more in the real thick low mids just depends on the amp. But definitely some amps do have a real rounded creamy mid range, others not so much.
Damn bro idgaf you get good tones out of damn near anything I still struggle to get the sound in my head to be real lol one day and is it just me or is that about the tallest amp head I’ve ever seen ?
I personally think the Randall RG1003H makes for a better amp in terms of tone. The clean tone is phenomenal on that amp since it’s completely solid state. The only thing that I have against the amplifier itself is that it’s pretty noisy even on the clean channel, so I would highly suggest using some active pickups like a set of EMG 57/66, or a set of Fishman Fluence pickups even to get rid of a lot of that noise. Other than that it’s a fantastic amp, and once I get this job I’m going to try and get the RG1003H as a part of my rig for playing live shows if I decide not to stick with my Bugera 6262, but I might just stick with the Bugera still simply because it’s such a good sounding amp.
I loved it ! I prefer more guts and volume. Just as long as it doesn't sound like a Bluelite Special.
Dime used the Randall RG 100 on the first 3 albums. I had that amp as well. Very good sounding amp !! ....But.....not as good as a tube amp. Hence , I sold mine and got a Lee Jackson modded 72 Marshall Lead 100. The absolute BEST AMP Ive EVER played.....But , sold it....Now , I have an original Peavey 5150 combo. Which sounds pretty dang good !!...But...not even close to thst LJ mod Marshall.
Correct as well as the century 200
Another episode of Gay Ray's, What is up my ass???
I had a Marshall model 8100 in the 90's, the amp Chuck Schuldiner is known for using, of course like an idiot I sold it. Older solid states are a very specific sound and do tend to sound a bit thin
that said I wish I still had it to break out when I want to play some Death
Is it just me... they sound a tad sterile? Very good for solidstate, but I would take a tube amp any day. Even Kranks had more dynamic range which were meant to emulate these things.
you're not alone. I didn't like this amp at all. I think it's only popular because of dime ya know?
Kirk from crowbar used one but boosted the red channel with a metal zone and acid bath used a metal zone into the clean channel. Def not a tone for everyone, these amps dont seem to be plug and play but can get some cool metal tones
Well I must you made that amp sound really good 🙂
Apparently the carpet ones are more warmer then the regular ones.
ayeeeeee hahah
How do you not like it ?
I appreciate the simplicity of this amp. But I can imagine you miss the tone and feel of a tube amp. I was never a huge fan of Pantera’s tone.
Yeah I personally was a fan of dimes tone at all. It’s just not for me
Dood.... You have to tune up to the right tuning to hear this thing in its glory. Cowboys was all in standard E. Yes, Its to muddy detuned. You kinda didn't demo this gear correctly. Then add the MXR EQ. Peace....
It’s an amp demo, not a dimebag tone demo
@@xanderraymondcharles The first line of your title is called DIMEBAG DARRELLS AMP.... lol
I’m not trying to troll you bro I’m just saying that you only played through this in your demo through detuned guitars. I think it would’ve been a more fair assessment to go through it in standard tuning. It was still a fun video and my thumb is up. Thanks for doing it
this versus a Quilter Overdrive 200 to see how far analog solid state amps have come.
is this using amp sim or mic’d?
3:23 YOU WANT A REAL SMILE
The way you smile while playing is a bit disturbing,in a good way, kinda reminds me of the blackhole sun video kinda vibe, which is cool
Are you willing to sell her?
I jam Slipknot on a Randall as well 😂
So, noob question here. What is the amp running into? You mentioned the overdrive pedal, but I didn't hear any mention of a cab. Did I miss this?
I used my UA Ox Amp top load box
@@xanderraymondcharles I hadn't heard of those till now. So it emulates a cab/mic then? Did you tinker with those settings much?
Hes too gay to have a real cab. Probably never even used a real amp before lol. He should stick to his Crapple laptop! And amp sims lol
Agreed
Mid range? Dime says "Pffffftttttttttttttttttt, Cut that shit outtttttttttttt!" :D
It sounds like a Metal Zone (not in a bad way of course)
Was there a footswitch plugged in? If not, fail
Hahah what? No footswitch :)
Stay Metal Ray you need the fs in order for it to sound meaty, or paper clipped to short clean channel, that’s prolly why you didn’t like it, if you don’t you’re playing thru both channels, whether clean is on 0 vol 0 gain, the signal is passing thru both channels and not focusing it thru channel 2 directly, I say you do an update video with the fs, you’ll see what I mean
I used to love this amp in the late 90’s early 2000’s but I can’t make it sound how I want. I like my Fender M80 better and it only has presents and shape for tone
enjoyed the video but that ain’t a street bike its a top fuel pro mod dragster
