    For any potentially new tarantula keepers here, I strongly advise against screen lids for most tarantulas. They have little “claws” on the end of their legs that allows them to climb and such and they often get stuck in screen lids and a fall from that height could easily damage your tarantula. I recommend using an acrylic enclosure or covering the screen with plastic or foam board maybe! Good luck!

    • @maxhamilton8204
      @maxhamilton8204 9 месяцев назад

      I am in tarantulas for 30+ years, I have 220 tarantulas currently, a lot of them in terrarium with screen lid. Never ever happened what you mention here. I am not saying it is impossible to happen though. Yes, they can climb also on the top and fall but it could happen with any type of lid.
      The reason why screen lid is not suitable for many species is the fact that lid is not able to keep humidity inside the enclosure. For a Brachy is not a problem, for a blondi it is a problem.

    • @localbuzzkill1760
      @localbuzzkill1760 9 месяцев назад

      @@maxhamilton8204 idk why, one of mine really liked climbing the screen lid and got stuck 2-3 times and I found her dangling by one leg from the top. After that I cut out a piece of cardboard and shoved it in the top to cover the screen. Only the one I had did that, but it was super scary thinking she would lose her leg. Not worth the risk imo!

I had to get two Brazilian blacks because those are my favorite lol. My first two were the Mexican red knee and the curly hair. My red knee is still a tiny sling so it doesn’t have those beautiful colors yet, but it’s so cool watching them grow. They are the easiest pets I’ve ever had. Be warned! This is a very addicting hobby, and I have to restrain myself from buying more lol

  • @earlknit5372

    I have 11 tarantulas of 9 different species. I personally don't handle because they drop risk and I don't want to get into a habit of using my hand to try stop a bolting spider. I already have two with medically significant venom and are planning to get a few old worlds in the future. Love that you covered some of the risks to tarantulas like falls and crickets.
    One way to get around the cost is to buy a spiderling, because the brachypelma genus (which the red knee is part of) is notoriously slow growers which means a higher price for larger specimens because it can literally take years to reach juvi stage. But that means you're the one playing the waiting game, not the seller. Another alternative is to look at various different species and see if any others take your fancy. I've heard the postage in the US for online suppliers is super high, so definitely a good shout for checking expos.

    Clint, you should cover some more amphibians!! Especially some salamanders are highly underrated and really easy to take care of, and fairly easy to captive breed as well. They make amazing pets, but most care guides are the "I just found this thing in my yard now I want it as a pet" type of care guide, which are okay, but could really be a lot better and more consistent. A few specific salamanders that come to mind are axolotls (which probably don't need a care guide, but is easy to make) and the Eastern Redbacked Salamander, Plethodon cinereus, which is a species of lungless salamander commonly kept WC as it's one of the most common vertebrates in it's area as well as being one of the easiest terrestrial salamanders to keep, but also is fairly easy to breed as the female incubates and helps raise her young. Even if there's not much to say about the animals themselves here, you still get to talk about RAD neoteny and lunglessness!!!

    I got her as a pretty small sling at my local fish shop for $35. Later, they sent me home with six more, the last of them, for free, but warned me they might be dead. (Basically, the store owner said they were being neglected by her staff, and she knew I took good care of mine.) And... Sadly, they were. Also I want to add that if you buy a sling of this species it's cheaper than buying a confirmed female, though it will be many years before you have an impressive spider because they are extremely slow growing.
    Just one more thing, using heat pads even on the side of the enclosure can be very dangerous, tarantulas really do not need extra heat unless your home regularly gets into the low sixties, even then it's much better and safer to heat the room they are in over using a heat mat.

    I prefer Brachypelma emilia. I kept a female as the one tarantula I'd keep from my collection of dozens and hundreds really over the years.
    Brachypelma do tend to be hair kickers.
    Fun fact. Studies on tarantula venom seem to show it doesn't carry the proteins to cause allergic reactions. Nobody has ever recorded a severe allergic reaction to a bite. It's just about severity in venom amongst species.
    The hairs however... You begin to become much more sensitive to.
    My dream tarantula was always a Poecilotheria subfusca. But I never managed to get one and I believe you can't really get them anymore.
    But I also decided to get out of keeping tarantulas for the most part and decided of all the ones I'd keep, I wouldn't keep any of my hotter old world Ts. I stuck with a pretty new world that would stay in the open.
    Overall though I'm more invested in keeping snakes

    • @gutz323
      @gutz323 3 года назад +1

      I keep tarantulas too, and I have heard that too that T venom has never put anyone into anaphylactic shock like a bee sting can, (like you said something to do with the proteins being totally different) even though you even here fairly knowledgeable people like Clint saying that it is a possibility amongst other exotic pet keepers.
      As for the pocelotheria subfuscha, they are fairly easy to get hold of in the hobby in Europe and the UK but they are now an endangered species in the wild these days along with lots of other pokies.

    • @adamdavis1737
      @adamdavis1737 3 года назад

      @@gutz323 I was getting out of keeping them when they were declared endangered. Over here in the states I could have sworn other keepers were saying there was some stuff going around that was going to make them harder to obtain because of it.
      Otherwise the only pokies I had ever kept were a couple of regalis. Shy buggers
      I was mostly into keeping different baboons as far as old world species went. H. macs were my favorite even though they're super common. They're just so gorgeous, and I had one for a while who wasn't afraid to show herself and was pretty chill.
      I also don't blame people like Clint if they're not super up on the specifics of tarantula knowledge, his specialty is clearly reptiles. I spent nearly 10 years getting pretty deep into collecting tarantulas and getting involved with breeding projects before finally getting out of it and getting more to keeping a few snakes instead.
      It was a good introduction to keeping exotic pets

      I don't know which country you are from, but here in the UK we have just had a large import from Mexico, which has had all kinds of Tarantulas imported from there. They are a protected species and a very limited number are taken from the wild, maybe none at all (I am not sure exactly what the laws are) but they have a large breading programme in Mexico that they export so people don't take them from there natural habitat. The Mexican Red knee (Brachypelma smithi, or Brachypelma hamoreii) are fairly hard to breed in captivity, unless you really know what you are doing and they also grow very slowly taking anything upto 6 to 8 years to mature, so maybe the reason you have seen them available is because of a seasonal import. I bought one a month ago, she is only 2 inches and has a good few years before she is anywhere near as big as the one in this video. They are actually an endangered species in the wild now, with there habitat being destroyed by them horrible humans. It is great that they have a breeding programme to keep the species going, but I guess it is only because the pet trade ends up funding it. Just think of all the wildlife and fauna that is being destroyed that will not survive because people do not want them as pets. In some ways the exotic pet trade can be a benefit to some species.

    I think it's really kind of sweet how spiders mate, up until the fight or flight moment that is. Then it's a mix of kinda sad, awkward, and empathetic backseat frustration lol.
    I absolutely love that they initiate by gently tapping on one another, and how it devolves into what looks like the snuggliest hug on the planet. But then again when you have 8 appendages to hug with (6 legs and two pedipalps- which is my newest favourite word ever btw. It used to be Wurmple but I like to argue that Pokemon specieslikely don't count as a true "word") you have no choice but to give amazing hugs lol. Unless you're a creep, and have a weird moistness and off-putting odor about you... then maybe even a hug with one set of appendages is two too many.
    Anyway, they then just kinda keep snuggling closer until theyre done, all the while the male keeps patting her arms as if too comfort her the whole way through. I mean I know this is like bare minimum when it comes to humans (pun intended lol) but you don't see a lot of snuggling and comforting in the majority of the natural world. Most species seem to mate as though they are being forced by their genetics to do so at fang-point. Many species literally are, and others, like those duck aholes, are even worse than that! And then we have the opposite end of the spectrum with some octopi who will literally just detach their own phallus and literally throw it at the female he hopes to "mate" with. I put the word "mate" in quotation marks because I would argue he is no longer part of the process. Although it's still kinda mating, the "he" is the part no longer in the equation... pwrhaps I should have put that in quotation marks. No matter... continuing on!
    I think if Spiders as a whole stopped worrying about not getting food, they would actually appear quite loving while mating. To bad the females sometimes murder the males when (and in some cases even before) they're done. Poor things.
    I watch a channel called Dave's Beasties and from what I can tell, he's absolutely AMAZING with his spooders. He has a problem with a female of his killing and eating not one but two males after mating. The last mating looked super promising, but at that cost he is so weary of mating her. He reached out and asked his audience for suggestions. If you guys or one of your spider keeper buddies are able to go have a look at his videos. If you are willing, I'm happy to get you a direct link if you don't have the time to look through his page for it. I also wouls totally understand because you are likely quite busy yourself(ves). The tarantula itself is not that expensive, red knees are so common that they can go between £15-£40 depending on the size and sex of the tarantula. For a red knee altogether it can cost £50-£60ish based on the substrate and interior decor. If you have a wider than taller tub that you can give cross ventilation laying around then thats one cost out the window as well as sticks/ make shift hides that they can use as burrows, substrate for the tarantulas are very dirt cheap (no pun intended) I'd give costs 5/5 personally because they are probably the cheapest tarantula to keep out there from the thousands of different tarantula breeds.

      One thing to keep in mind is that tarantulas are typically far more expensive outside of Europe than within.
      And there’s really not thousands of tarantula “breeds”. There’s right around a thousand known species.
