Emperor Scorpion, The Best Pet Invertebrate?

- Scorpions are incredibly cool. The emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is not only one of the largest scorpions, but also one of the most common pet scorpions. But is it a good pet scorpion? And is it the best pet invertebrate for you?

@@VilleAbr Very good job Clint! I agree!
Yeah I agree. He also cracks me up , very entertaining
This is why i subscribe to him because i want to have one a pet :>
I like emperor scorpion
Emperor scorpion was my first pet i owned. he was so chill if i put my hand in his cage he would just climb on and hang out with me all day by staying on my shoulder. he escaped one day only for me to wake up with him sleeping on my pillow with me. he was a very sweet scorpion compared to others ive owned. I miss him more then any of my other small(insect) pet that i owned
@M P right? It's metal af but both losing him AND finding him on your pillow next to you is crazy af
dang lol you had a good boy didnt you
I think alot of emperor scorpions are like that
I’ve always been terrified of scorpions but that comment just hurts my heart.
In a good way.
K but if you rolled over on him a stab would be in ur future
I'm so glad scorpions exist
I feel like if they didn't there would be a fantasy creature that looks just like them and we'd all wish they really existed
That's a good way to describe alot of invertebrates.
I love the little jumping spiders. Have one living in my office now.
They already invented manticores, which are bad enough.
Your energy is incredible, dude. Always an informative and entertaining time!
Thanks for the video
Damn, It's actually the real kruggsmash.
Big fan of both of you guys!
I would have NEVER thought to see you here. This is amazing.
Clint's craftsmanship is of the highest quality. His channel is encrusted with quirky pets and 5 categories.
@@yusufmokhtar6781 I actually had an emperor scorpion for quite a few years! They're great pets. Mine's name was Butterbean.
Cool
My day is made the second I hear Clint’s “ Oh hi there”
That's stinking rad!
He's the invertebrate uncle I always wished I'd had.
He says “well hi there”
*well* hi there
It’s the “stinkin’ rad” that stole my heart😂
My first scorpion was an emperor named Risk. He was my first exotic and the reason I became obsessed with scorpions. I loved him, he had such a personality. He died last year, sadly, but he is still with me. I casted him in resin and now he is a reminded of what started it all with my love and hobby with scorpions and others like reptiles.
Aw thats awesome!
What a sweet story. Thank you for sharing!
What a cool name
My first were two pairs of black laos scorpions (heterometrus laoticus). Awesome pets indeed
hhhk20
To me he had personality. He would do things like push around tank objects or choose to climb up on his hide and not be inside it.
So about 20 years ago I purchased a "emperor scorpion " from the pet shop, and it was super aggressive. He struck anything that came near him with his tail. I never could handle him. He was also black and shiny like the forest scorpion. I think a long standing mystery has been solved. Thanks for the video
I never found scorpions aesthetically pleasing until your macro shots of their face. Their front eyes are so dumb looking and cute
Which ones? Most have like 8 eyes. The two big ones on the top are for looking upward.
They have (usually) 3 on each side of their “face”. Which is what they use to see in front of them.
Even with all these eyes, their eyesight sucks. They can only really disguising between shadows and light. They rely on their sensitive hairs to feel what’s around them.
I thought I just wanted a vinegaroon and a tailless whip scorpion but this video convinced me I'll also have to get a "regular" scorpion at some point 😂
All rad!
'Groons are great for 4 months per year. The other 8 months they're pet holes, or at least M. giganteus are. I'd never give up my Vincent though, I think she's the best pet invert that I've ever had.
@@Lykoloo I don't mind that, I have a pacman frog so I already have a "pet rock". I really just need more space but these tiny UK houses...
Same mindset here!! I really want a tailless whip scorpion but for now I might have to start with a “regular” one 😂
I swear I've read the title as "Emperor Palpatine, the best pet invertebrate?" and I lost my mind
Be careful. They like to say that they are the Senate and try to tell you the tragedy of Darth Plagieus the Wise.
Ironic
Emperor Palpatine, the best Sith Lord?
The durability with the sheev is pretty high he just wont die just dont let him use his force lightning on a light saber
I legit named my first emperor scorp Palpatine because it's so fitting.
Clint I am loving all the invertebrate videos! I've kept tarantulas for about a decade. Since coming across your videos, I've ended up with a widow, wolf spider, and a whole bunch of jumping spiders! Keep up the awesome work!
That's the danger :)
@@ClintsReptiles "Watch this channel and have your house overrun by spiders"?
@@TheOpalHammer My house is already overrun by spiders, so I may as well keep some of them as friends.
@@ledumpsterfire6474 Befriend the largest ones to keep the rest in line.
@@TheOpalHammer Just moved back to Montana after a year and a half in rural Florida, so my definition of "big" has radically changed. I've gone from having to take them outside in literal mixing bowls back down to using a half pint jar again lol. I'll never forget having a huntsman in our shower whose legspan was larger than my also relatively large hand.
THANK YOU CLINT!!!! I've played with the idea of getting a scorpion and I no realize every single "Emperor Scorpion" I've ever seen was an Asian Forrest Scorpion. I still might get a Scorpion someday, but not for a little while.
Your Asian Forrest vs Emperor Scorpion comparison made it crystal clear,

Im loving the casual flex of the variegated monstera in the background
Edit: just reached the end where he calls it out 😂
Right! That plant is probably close to $1000 at the size it is! So beautiful ❤️
What, I have one in my backyard and I have to trim it because it doesn't stop growing
in the middle of the night a figure appears at the foot of your bed...
"Well HI there!"
I love how offended/surprised the scorpions look when feeding them lol, then they carry the food in their mouths like cute lil puppy dogs. Adorable lil creatures
Me (a plant person): spends the whole video staring at the variegated monstera
Plants are awesome
Youre made of plants?
Pleasing appearance, some monsterism.
I was not interested in watching a scorpion video, but here I am. Very enjoyable watch, Thank you to Clint and the whole team.
I saw your comment on antscanada's video. AND PLEAAASEEEE DO AN ANT VIDEO!!! I WOULD LOOOVEEEE THAT! I also hope Mikey says yes :) good luck!
Seconded, good luck with your master plan! 😉
Thirded!
Love AC! Got my bf sucked into his channel, and this one too lol
Oh please
This is like the best episode
I know right I don't keep them and see Will not for a long time but they look so cool
Mate them are the best scorpions to keep for sure
@@JPsPetNation definitely since they are not aggressive
@@herpdiversity9152 plus they're not as venomous as other scorpions. Scorpions have actually adapted to their hunting style, and what I mean by that is some scorpions use their tail to hunt and others use their claws to crush their prey alive whilst they eat it. The ones that crush their prey have a weaker venom in their stings as it's meant to paralyze, not kill. You can tell the difference from the claw size, larger claws mean it is a less venomous scorpion but it's pinchers will hurt a heck of a lot more.
@@nauticalgaming2256 exactly also because they are not as fragile as the smaller species
I believe I need to thank you. My wife hate watching you. She says every time she does, she wants to get another pet. She was terrified of tarantulas, scorpions, and everything else on your channel haha. Yet when she sees your presentations, she is like, I could get a spider or a scorpion. She even wants a Gus Gus of her own. So from the bottom of my heart thank you, and thank you for helping me be a better pet owner.
Definitely a lid! I had a pair when I was a teenager. I opened the lid one day to find one of them upside down on the screen lid...
I had one when I was younger and stupidly didn't keep a lid on for the first few weeks. One day I look in the habitat and she's not there, I start panicking but luckily she was only hiding underneath my dresser
Mihajlo I know that feeling all to well! Glad she was found safe and sound.
My emperor also walks upside down on the lid. I always have to check before opening it. She's a sassy one.
Your enthusiasm for the anatomy of a scorpion makes me want one even more. Watching your vids convinced me to get a kingsnake and now I think I'll go through with it and get a scorpion
I love the whole Clint’s Reptiles family, and will appreciate each and every upload. As somebody currently undergoing my biology major, these videos keep me actively interested, and excited for what the future holds. Thank you Clint, and the rest of the gang; you guys help me so much when it comes to college burnout, and just overall motivation. You guys are truly, stinkin’ rad!
Honestly love scorpions most ppl get scared but I find them to look like a land lobster with no stinger! They are absolutely with no doubt super cool! Unfortunately can't get one dude to my parents but just gotta wait till I get older
It's SO unbelievably cool that they light up under U/V light, 👍
Such amazing animals.

Love the passion this guy brings when talking about reptiles, insects, arthropods etc.
Hey Clint, I love these guides. They're very informative and your energy is infectious. But if I can make one suggestion could I recommend that when you talk about temperatures inside the home could you please give a range of approximate temperatures? When you say "if the house gets extremely cold" I don't really know what that means. I live in a northern climate and so during the winter it really isn't uncommon for my house to be in the low sixties to even the mid fifties of degrees, (fahrenheit). To someone like me "extremely cold" means literally freezing or just a little above, now logically I know that temperatures like those are way too cold for most animals but it would be nice to have a more solid idea of what "hot" and "cold" are.
"It's possible they could get out...
...and then you'll have to explain that to your family."
That's the most understated way of saying "you'll have to sell your house and move to a different zip code."

How was this 2 days ago?
One of the perks of Patreon :)
Being a Patreon is stinking rad
Someone needs to write a book called “little nightmares” that tells of all of the ways different insects & arachnids are nightmarish to similarly sized animals. I would buy that book.imagine the chapter on jumping spiders! Insane!
An excerpt from the jumping spider chapter ( I locked eyes with it. We both saw each other for just a moment when.. BAM! It’s on top of me it’s fangs are sinking deep into my thorax! I have to get away... but...I can’t.) or something like that. Lol
If someone finds a book like this please tell me so I can stop writing it.

Great video, Clint! I have an Asian forest scorpion bred by someone who lives in my city. I love that you mentioned the necessity of mounting a heat mat (if necessary) on the SIDE, as I do. The only way to do it. 😊👍
P.S. I hope your eyes are ok!

In general you are always infectiously excited in your videos but you are so excited in this video its ridiculous. I love it! Love your channel and quality of content. ❤
You always make my day :) thank you Mr Reptile Rodgers
My first scorpion was an emperor named Dr. Stinglesworth M.D., RIP, cat at him. I liked the scorpion more than the cat, never had another cat.
This comment really reinforces just how ridiculously savage cats are. Like damn. He was a Scorpion, doctor AND an Emperor and the cat STILL won?
Greatest comment of the decade.
What's with all the hate of cats? My family currently has 2 dogs, 2 cats and coming soon a Hognose and Bullsnake (Our 15yr old daughter and I are the snake fans, there is no way my wife or other daughter would allow Arachnids in the house. Although they do follow the house rule that no spider is to die when found, call me or the other daughter and we catch it and release it outside.)
@@mystic_tacos Did you read George's comment at all? A cat killed a doctor, Mystic. *A MEDICAL DOCTOR*
Clint YOU'RE stinking rad. Arguably the best pet youtuber for me.
As someone with the scorpion as my zodiac sign, I had to like this video!
I also
Lol, Clint is totally flexing that variegated monstera deliciosa he picked up. 😂
I have wanted an Emperor for like 25 years. I did once have a desert scorpion, and he was a really easy, low maintenance pet. On feeding day, I would wait until after dark, turn on the blacklight, and watch him hunt down his crickets. So cool to observe. Considering how entertaining it was to see him hunting, I might actually like a Forest Scorpion better with their more aggressive feeding response, since I consider scorpions a "looking" pet, not a "touching" pet.
Its rad to see clints helping me bring rad back
I always get a big, silly smile whenever you upload. Love your content
Clint you always say the animals are rad.
But I think you are super rad
I was waiting for this video! I am thinking of getting one but I needed one of your videos to determine. Thanks! BTW I recently got my first reptile, a beardie and he is amazing. I wouldn't have gotten him without you. Thank you so much. Also, any recomendations for my 2nd pet reptile?
I absolutely love your videos and I definitely watched this one a dozen times when I was deciding on my first invertebrate. I am now the proud owner of two emperor scorpions (and avoided being tricked into buying an Asian forest scorpion) and I just wanna thank you for helping me bring them into my life! I don’t know if you read every comment (especially on older videos) but just in case I thought it would be nice to let you know how much of an amazing job you’re doing. Thank you so much!
I saw u commented on antscanada’s video, I can’t wait for a collabbb
Hopefully he reaches out :)
I want him to collab with serpa design
I asked for this a while back in a comment, so awesome! Great video!
Are you going to ever review some Old World tarantula's, particularly the OBT? I am curious what kind of things you have to say about that nightmare.
For the first time ever, the handleability scale goes negative...
Jason Blalock - Yes, as it teleports across the table at blinding speed!!! 🤣🤣🤣
OBTs are awesome. Mine wants to kill me all the time and I think he hates even himself + I am pretty sure he is doing some demon-worship and world-domination plans in his burrow :D Cleaning the enclosure requires you not even to blink once cause well...and I am pretty sure upfront costs require antidepressants and mood stabilizers for rehousing preparation :D Such a lovely creature ! All in all keeping an OBT is a supernatural experience...

Love the videos! I’m actually considering getting a scorpion! (It would be my first pet that isn’t a dog or cat lol). I hate to suggest anything at all, but the Gigantometrus Swammerdami scorpion would be an interesting video for me personally. Thanks for all that you do :)
So this is the video where you give a score-pion?
I’ll show myself out.
Emperor was so calm and "friendly" I use that loosely that I would handle her quite alot especially when she got older. I would never hold her under molt but she was awesome any other time.
I hope anyone who didn’t know about the end of video clips goes back and watches some. There are some of my favorite and most quotable moments of Clints videos in those clips!

This is something I envy in the US...Im from Portugal and its really hard to access reptiles and insects from breeders...pet shops are incredibly expensive and most of the amazing pets you show are non existent in them...only expos and they are rare...I am trying to get mourning geckos for more than a year and I simply cant fins them...love the channel, learned a ton
Wish List:
Pacman Frog
Russian Tortise
Box Turtle
Rosy Boa
lol I've been asking for a russian tortise vid a lot
I have a russian tortise. He is an amazing tortise and personality I think he’s the best type as a pet. Not big at all, wont eat you out of house and home and lives a relatively long live but nowhere near the same as the large ones.
I want hermit crabs and moon crabs.
Moon Crabs would be amazing, I own one. I'd also like to see him do a video about Tiger Salamanders.
I love these scorpions. Much more gentle than most scorpions and so big. And not even dangerous
I'm on the research stage of getting my emperor scorpion I wanna make sure I'm 100% ready before I get him this was so helpful !!
They will likely return to being more available now that Microsoft bought the rights to radscorpions.
Thank you. Im genius I know. Ill be here all week.
I learned and forgot more words during the first 100 seconds of this video than I have during rest of the year!
I had these guys as pets for most of my teenage years and they are awesome pets. Very laid back and inoffensive. Even with imports becoming available again, I would still encourage those interested in this species to go captive bred. The wild populations in their native range have been pretty badly impacted in years past by over-collection, and the REALLY big specimens that pop up in pet stores may actually be close to the end of their life spans, as I found out the hard way. Captive breeding of this species may be a bit more expensive, but it is an infinitely more sustainable way to make sure the demands for this species is being met, and that you’re getting an animal that isn’t riddled with parasites, stressed to the point of death from transit, near the end of its natural lifespan, or all of the above.
I never forgave the scorpion for killing Antie in Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
Never forgive. Never forget.
SCOPIONS ARE SUPER AWESOME! I loved my Emperor scorp.
We have an Asian forest scorpion at my school, but it's the nicest scorpion I've ever met. It's chill all the time and you can basically just pick it up and it won't care. We use it sometimes to help people get over their fear of scorpions because she's just the sweetest little thing. She recently got babies as well and my teacher said that if I got permission from my mom I could get one, though my mom doesn't like creepy crawlies like me so I don't really like my ods. Hopefully though I'm able to convince her because if they're anything like their mom they will make for awesome pets, wish me luck
What did your mom say?
@@BriDia3 she said I could get one, when I move out, and she has made it clear that she has no intention of changing her mind. And with me not having the time to work full time due to school and me not being 18 just yet I sadly think it will have to wait a while. But relatively soon I will turn 18 and thus I can get a full salary, and since I already have a job set up within my realm of expertise for when I become 18 and a decent amount of money already saved up from working said job part time for a while all I really have left is to graduate so I can start working full time and save up a bit more money before I can afford an apartment and all that comes with living alone as an adult. It won't be the biggest or most luxurious apartment in the world, but it'll be enough to house me and a scorpion, and maybe a few spiders and the like. I can even ask the school if they can make sure one of them stays til I get my life sorted out for some compensation, the school and all the teachers in charge of the animal house are really nice so i think they will agree to keep one for me for a little while. Give me a few years and one of those little baby scorpions will be mine, I am sure of it!
@Guy Named Erik my mom was strict with pets, now I own a house and over 30 pets lol
I have a spare 10gal tank due to a snake upgrade and I was JUST considering an emperor scorpion for it so thanks for this video!!
My last year in the Army, I was a full blown stoner and thought it was a good idea to get a pet scorpion (I kept reps and fish growing up, so I know what I am doing). His name was Bubba, he was such a chill animal, I would freak others out by having him on my shoulder while on the computer or watching TV. Now anyone else he would become aggressive. So they do know who their owners are, plus he protected my stash. Lol now I want a Bubba 2.0, their intelligence is underestimated. One of the best pets ever.
That variegated Monstera is killer!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is how I start my super Saturdays :-) Amazing video clint!
Thank you!
You deserve WAY more subscribers!!!! Keep up the amazing work!
I've kept 3 of these. Loved every one of them..
I used to have a family of emperors in a 20gal tank, and I can agree with everything in this video. Definitely placing the heat pad on the SIDE of the tank is important. Humidity is very important, and don't introduce LIVE crickets unless you want a horrible infestation of mites...uhg!
I love my little baby emperor scorpion! Can't wait for it to grow
I love emperors. I have a breeding colony of about 100 emperor scorps that have produced so well :)
I have been keeping scorps for many years. I love them! Someone has to love them, eh? I can attest that their claws hurt more than their sting, generally speaking. Many don't realize but scorpions can sting, pinch, or bite. Beautiful creatures. Just another example of Mother Nature's perfection.
This channel and all your videos are stinkin rad! We live in the uk and We have snakes, a curly hair tarantula and a salmon pink birdeater and an Asian forest scorpion at the moment and they're all amazing! We've had mantids before and only recently lost our giant african millipede but they're all amazing creatures. Keep making the awesome vids!
Everywhere I read everyone puts the heat pad under the enclosure. But it makes more sense to install the heat mat on the side. Or a heat emitter (not heat bulb!) on top.
Scorpions are gorgeous, especially such big black ones. It looks quite cool when they eat and also drink; they shovel the water to their mouth. It is just a pitty that they hide in their burrows most of the time.
This guy is just delightful
My scorpion loves to hang upside down on the lid of his tank. I’m glad I have a locking lid
I love how both my pet scorpions are in this video.
I remember my high school keeping these as the class pets for the science classroom.
That sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
@@Rob_Thorsman They're actually very safe, and one of my teachers bred tarantulas and scorpions. And I've never heard of anyone being killed by an emperor scorpion or an Asian giant forest scorpion (if it was a deathstalker scorpion or a yellow fat-tailed scorpion, it would have been a very different story).
Good video. Your use of chameleons for your 0-5 rating scale is cute and clever :)
Love how random the segment names are
i have several tarantulas, but no scorpions. the care seems similar to most terrestrial tropical tarantulas. this video was very useful.
I get more and more respect for Clint every video, this time it was hearing about how he didn’t want to just cull the beetles, making their lives a waste, and instead used them to help another animal!
Most wholesome and loveable channel out there.
Here it finally is...a scorpion video! Thanks a lot Clint, this was overdue :D I kept a pair of these some 20 years ago - but failed quite miserable. Unfortunately, there was no Clint's Reptiles back then ;)
Definitely agree with the AFS vs. Emperor take. My first scorpion was an emperor, and he was awesome. Pretty docile and hardy, yet not all that worrisome to handle if done correctly. My current scorpion is an Asian Forest, and she is ALWAYS defensive and quick to face a perceived threat with violence. Still an awesome scorp, but I don't plan to ever try handling her. Very big difference in personality from my experience.
I have been researching these for a couple of days
Emperors are great. My brother use to breed them in the 90s. About the perfect small pet you could keep imo.
I've been watching your channel and praying for a long while that you'd cover scorpions, I've kept and raised a few different species and I love them all from emperor scorpion to asian giant to dictator scorpions I love them
got a Asian forest scorpion myself its absolutely rad to watch it eat! and yes it is extremely feisty
I love your channel so much Clint. I feel like every time I want to look more into a reptile/amphibian/invert you come out with a video about it the very next day! Keep doing what you're doing Clint. I love it!
