  • Do you want to have a baby WITHOUT an epidural? On June 25, 2015 I delivered Eloise Marie Hover without any medication and I thought it would be fun to tell you about my experience and share tips in case you'll be doing it one day too! I pretty much knew nothing about natural labor before it happened so anything I'm sharing is strictly from experience but I hope it can be helpful for you! Here are some of my tips for a natural labor.

    I had my baby naturally and you were right about the relaxing between contractions. I fell asleep snoring between every contraction until it was time to push! My midwives were so impressed with how well I did the whole time, and they barely had to coach me because I was handling it so well (by the grace of God!) and when it was all over I felt like some kind of Superwoman!
    I'm glad I watched this video, its getting me all pumped up for doing it again in 9 weeks!

      Jailene Ramos Natural typically means unmedicated. Epidurals are not natural, even though it’s still a vaginal birth. No shame regardless of how baby comes out it’s all hard superhero work, but that’s usually what is meant by the term natural.

    Being 37 weeks, here's how labor pain management was explained to me which really really helped me understand: there's adrenaline, and there's oxytocin. Adrenaline is a fear response and actually hinders labor - imagine a deer in labor in the forest. If she senses a predator nearby while in labor giving birth, her adrenaline will actually hinder her labor so she can stop momentarily and get somewhere safe. Oxytocin, a happy cuddly hormone, helps your uterus contract. When you're contracting, try as much as possible to breath and stay calm as possible, because by freaking out in fear you're actually stopping yourself from progressing more, and will make it more likely that you'll need intervention - it makes it more painful!! It's harder than it sounds of course, but understanding that fear vs calm response in a scientific way has really helped me gear up to labor and get through it! Just imagine yourself as that deer in the forest ❤️ Best of luck mamas!

      I absolutely agree!! I was emergency induced with my first at 36 weeks. I was 19 and terrified!!! It made it so much worse because my anxiety...I ended up getting epidural because i just couldn't mentally and that affected me physically..the epidural did not last and it did not work completely. It was very strange. This time, i want to go on natural and calm ...praying i can

      Exactly👍 the moment you give in to panic, fear and screaming you loose control and your body freeze and will not work with you. Just trust your body, sleep between contractions, crack jokes between contractions and gather strenght. I promised my self never to say "I cant do this or I give up" and I didnt👍I have 3 children and wish I couldt experience labour again and again. It is so amazing💕💕

    How to avoid epidural?
    Release fear and relax your body, let your body work and don't resist. It won't fail you and the pain will be much less severe.

    • @Caroline1261
      @Caroline1261 5 лет назад +44

      Why avoid the epidural? Why say that not using modern medicine is somehow "better" ? Every birth is different. Sometimes you need relief. I had 36 hours of contractions (really close to each other and very intense) and I never opened more then 4 cm. I took the epidural for some relief. At the end, my baby was in distress and they needed to do an emergency C section.

      caroline Can’t really speak for other women but I’m planning to not have one because I’ve had back pain that comes and goes for about 9 years and don’t want to take risks which may result in it sticking around permanently. My sister in law had back pain for 3 months pp and it was more exhausting than her birthing experience by a long shot. I don’t want this at all, I couldn’t cope. There are also many pros and cons. 😊

    • @Caroline1261
      @Caroline1261 5 лет назад +5

      @@nadinephyllisfittt2620 the doctors said that because you have a back pain you can't have the epidural? That is strange, never heard of that. Sorry and hope you get better. You should think about getting an MRI and seeing if you have an herniated disc or a bad sciatica that can be help with injection of cortisone. I can't see how an epidural would make it worse but I'm not a doctor of course! Good luck :)

    What helped me the most with the pain was me being in the warm bathtub during my contractions prior to the pushing phase before my water broke and I had to get out of the water and start pushing. In the tub my husband would pour warm water on me during the contractions and give me a cold wet towel on my forehead in between contractions. Helped tremendously. !!!

    I am so glad I found this video. I am on my first pregnancy and I am terrified more of the epidural than the pain! Don't get me wrong, I am scared of the pain of delivery, but I just really don't like the idea of a needle in my back. I really appreciate your openness and acceptance of all avenues of delivery. You seem like a very real person in a sea of Internet "experts" and over-bearing opinionated jerks. So thanks for being awesome. Being in the tub also helped so much. I was able to deliver in the water and it felt really good.

    Had both my girls naturally....planning to have our third naturally as well God willing. Super calm w them. My thing was if women back in the day could handle the pain, why couldn't I? I was at 8cm dilated with my first daughter when I went to hospital. With my second daughter my water broke after a shower at home and I drove to the hospital at was dilated at 5 cm. I was like, I don't want to be in the hospital for a long time, but thank God it moved real fast and had her fast. Praying that 10 years later, I can be calm with this baby is due in June 2019. Trust in God, have faith in Him and He will bless you with strength through the delivery.

      I totally agree with this! So many people have the argument of “well with modern medicine wouldn’t it be silly not to use everything you have available to you??” And my response to that would be that I’m grateful for modern medicine that can keep me from bleeding out if I rupture an artery during birth or can help detect if I have high blood pressure or other serious complications that could save me or my baby but I BELIEVE that women’s bodies are made to give birth and that I shouldn’t have any need to partake in outside pain relief. ❤️❤️❤️

    I'm totally more fearful of an epidural than a natural birth. Not being able to move, having to have a catheter, all the poking and prodding that comes with it--not so much haha. I think being prepared mentally is great. I'm five months and I've been doing breathing exercises when I feel ANY discomfort my entire pregnancy, just so that way when the real pain happens I can automatically go to that breathing/relaxed state. THis is my first, and it might be weird to say, but I'm excited to see what my body is made for! :)

      radicallytubular the pain just isn't that bad...only about 20-30 seconds of a 60-90 second contractions really hurts...then it stops completely...you rest...the next contraction starts...at the top of the contraction, UGH...then better
      For me, no real pain when I started pushing...just pressure.

Listen, I cried when the anesthesiologist came in, scared of epidural, asking him has he paralyzed anyone, did they have back problems, I was going crazy until he did it. Regretted it.
    The doctors kept running back and forth in the room saying his heart rate dropped and I would need a csection. My son heard that and made his own way out naturally

  • @rebeccalamb8170

    This was so encouraging. With my first birth, I had the same attitude where I WANTED a natural birth but was open to an epidural. My husband and I had agreed that if I had to be induced, I would go ahead and have an epidural because I was already not experiencing natural labor, and sure enough, when my daughter was a week and a half late, that was what it came to. But I had always suspected an epidural wouldn’t work right with me as I’ve always been very resistant to pain meds. And I was right. First it didn’t work at all and they had to pull the whole thing out and replace it, at which point I was told my scoliosis was also a factor in the epidural not working. The news one provided SOME relief for maybe an hour but then I was right back to feeling the pain of my contractions only now, I couldn’t move my legs and was stuck laying in the bed just kind of taking it. Then when it came time to push, again, I felt all the pain but couldn’t feel which muscles I was using and wound up “pushing with my face” as the nurse put it. Now I’m expecting again, and at least I can say I absolutely WILL not be getting an epidural because I know from experience that it’s not for me. But then everyone started telling me that I NEED to take a birthing class, but I really can’t afford that. It’s so good to hear success stories of natural births with minimal preparation ahead of time :)

    You're so cute! I miss your sweet spirit!
    Another helpful tip that I was taught to help yourself not to tense up during contractions is to pic a spot on the wall and breathe as slowly through your nose and then slowly out your mouth. It's usually in 15-20 second second intervals because contractions last about 45-60 seconds. It's so important to stay as relaxed as possible. My nurses were so shocked because I was so silent through my labor and it actually caused my labor to progress much faster because I wasn't tense. And it gives you more energy to push when the time comes! :)

I had 3, 3rd degree tears. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced. I'm almost 39 weeks pregnant.. And i've been wanting to have my baby natural. Everyone's been like "ah, no.. You're gonna take the epidural for sure".. But this video gave me more confidence.. And i'm more than ever determined to have my son natural. Thank you! Amazing tips! Best one i've seen so far. :) :)

      To go through a natural labor is badass. This lady is tough.. The pain was beyond excruciating for me. I took the epidural at 4cm lol.. Idk, it really surprises me that women can endure that kind pain for a looong period of time without taking the epidural.. Its very impressive. But i couldn't do it lol

    Great help. Thank you so much. I'm due in a month, living in China and away from family, 1st baby. This helps my husband and I a lot. Bless you

    I LOVE your approach to this - so good and refreshing to see someone who describes natural birth without being too pushy about it. Eight months pregnant with my first one. At the moment, at least in the UK, natural birthing seems to be the hot trend - which I think on one hand is cool, but on the other I feel pushed into it (it's as if taking epidural is delegitimized, and you're considered 'weak' for even thinking about it). Seeing your video was a breath of fresh air - so thanks!!!

    You are so helpful and positive!!! I’m 38 weeks and 5 days and I said the same about epidural. But I didn’t understand why women preferred natural births instead, now that I do I’m wondering if I can tolerate that pain enough to give birth. You just gave me a ton of hope so thank you! 🙌🏽🙏🏽

    Thank you so much for this video, I was just searching through for helpful/encouraging videos as I'm about to be having my 4th any day now, my 3rd was natural and I'll be honest, The Lord humbled me lol it was so so very hard for me pain wise that I developed some trauma but I'm determined to give this another shot and this video was so helpful!!!!

    I’m watching this in 2019... I am so glad I found this video. Honestly the MOST informative yet realistic advice/experience shared that I have come across. I’m doing an at home water birth (my first baby). I am deathly afraid of epidurals due to past experiences with back injections for a back injury I sustained in a car accident in 2012. So that is NOT AN option for me🥺🤯..

    I am on my second baby. I had a natural labor and delivery the first time around 8 years ago (23 hours like a boss while listening to worship music 😄) and I am so happy I did. I am hoping to do just the same this time around. I needed a little pep talk and some timely reminders. You gave me that pep talk! Thank you so much!
