Howdy, folks, I titled this video, learning to apply just an interior lime plaster finish level 5 over a fireplace. The fact is, one can do a level four or five with just a lime plaster finish.
    If you are experienced.
Note, that this finish can be applied over anything interior, from walls to ceilings.
Remember, “Veneer” means a thin application of lime plaster.
It has nothing to do with actual Lime plastering.
That said, do you really have to only apply a sixteenth to an eighth inch thick?
No, I have filled gaps sometimes an inch or so thick. When necessary.

I've noticed you keep defending/apologizing for the big pool trowel but ti makes perfect sense to me. I have a huge taping knife that I use for drywall repair. I think it's 18". I can use it like you use a darby over most patches that I do. Saves me a LOT of time. Single pass and the patch is level and I'm getting to the point where I can do a patch without leaving any ridges... so almost no sanding. I'm getting better with it partially from watching you and the subtle things about how you hold your trowel. Since I can't find a mud pan big enough, I just slap the mud on with a smaller knife and "darby" it with the big one. The only drawback I can see with your pool trowel is that most of us probably don't have the wrist strength to use it as well as you do.

A few years ago I repaired plumbing leaks on 1964 commercial building in the basement. I used diamond mesh and half inch channel iron. The material was structolite I added some sand to my batches and had to let it slake after the initial mix ing. In all it ended up being two tons of material. Lot of holes big and small. Took two weeks all ceiling level 5 . Good experience ate my lunch though.2800 dollars. I know better now .you've been quite an inspection for me . Thanks

Good evening Peter dude, structo-lite is easy to apply if you have it set when you want it to set.
The trick is to keep your trowel wet. As structo-lite is sort of gluey, but with a wet trowel, it slicks well.🍻

Hey Kirk. This was a pure pleasure to watch and brought back many great memories. I learned the lime plastering over 40 years ago from a master back on the brownstone houses in Brooklyn NY and I went on to do a lot of repair work etc for several years, in fact I worked in the union as a finish plasterer for a few years. I also did quite a bit of ornamental work, cornice & medallion work. I am chiefly a carpenter by trade with my own business and nearing the end of my working years (retirement). I still do the plaster repairs from time to time as I’m not set up anymore to do the bigger jobs, also there is not such a big call for it and most of the time it’s just skimming over Sheetrock with a mix of jc and plaster of Paris mixed the traditional way. It works fine but I don’t get that wonderful hard finish I got with the putty & gauging or the Diamond (good stuff). Just letting you know that it brings a lot of pleasure to watch your true time tested skills. Thanks

watched several of your vids and found them very good. I've been trying to veneer a bedroom in my house and having trouble. struggling with the ceiling, so far. Im a novice, but i am NOT a total rookie. Ive plastered over the years on my own using all the wrong materials and etc but always manage to make the wall look smooth and pro. figured id have similar luck on this job - especially having watched some instruction, gotten the right tools, used the Diamond finish veneer, sealed my regular sheetrock with a bonding agent, etc. but no. at first, my work looks good, but pretty quickly the plaster is roughing up, rather than staying smooth and 'going glassy' the more i work it. Its like it's drying out too quickly, or something? Im solo, so my small batches are starting to set after just 30-40 mins, it feels like. what gives? Is it just that ceilings are much harder? its my first ceiling. Hard to work overhead, and all that, but ??? I wonder if its a bunch of small problems - my plaster mix isn't quite right (feels like whipped cream, as you say), or my mix batches are too small, working alone, having to stop and mix another batch, etc etc. i know that I'm not a pro with 25 years, but again, I'm pretty good, for a non-pro (I've successfully plastered a few things on my own over the years). Wonder if you see any little thing in my story that might suggest an obvious problem? many thanks.

Evening Sam dude, I can't apply plaster and mix at the same time on a ceiling.
I feel this is extremely difficult, you need help, one man to mix and be told when to get the next batch ready, and one man to spread.
As your forgetting the main thing, plaster waits for no man, so when you know you need more, now, your busy mixing which takes 20 minutes, by this time you lost your first applied mix. Your an animal and a hero for trying, but in the future, dont do that.

Howdy Kevin, you can mist the basecoat a bit and work in cooler conditions plus to maximize the time of all plasters when mixed use very clean or new buckets and a clean drill paddle, as buckets with residue speed up the setting process.

I was looking for a way to avoid sanding the regular drywall mud because of all the dust and not wanting it to damage my electronic gear. What product are you using on the corners? It doesn't look like regular bead (sorry to ask...I'm a nube!). Also, what bonding material do you recommend. If you've answered any of these questions, please let me know which video to watch. Hey Kirk! I’ve watched several of your videos. Didn’t realize I could comment and ask a question. I am not a professional, I have been remodeling my fixer house about 7 years now. I have a cinder block house in north California. It had old wallpaper in the bedrooms. I removed them to a white sandy looking finish over the cinderblock. I applied bonding adhesive, imperial base coat then without bonding adhesive in between I applied diamond finish, I was originally going with a smooth finish but but did not master it in time so I went with the skip trowel texture. The kicker, I decided I wanted a natural hard look so I added stucco dye powder terra-cotta. This is why I couldn’t spray n trowel hard smooth the plaster because it would fade the color dye when trying so. I also in a hurry never scratched the base coat which I think will be alright. It ended up looking really good a lil decorative than I wanted but ok. There were many spider checks but I got most of them by touching up later. My question is now that I have the next bedroom to do that will be going with another earth tone color but prob beige light brown, is that can I save some money and use a stucco brand base coat at Home Depot instead of imperial for the base coat? Also going to do interior of my cinder block plus some fur out walls of my gargage/studio, I would like a lite color industrial looking sandy finish, can I get that with straight Portland cement and then paint it? I experimented with a stucco at Home Depot white looked nice but too grandular for interior even for a garage, should I just get the fine stucco and dye it for interior? Or try Portland cement and paint it because I don’t think you can dye Portland cement. 70% of the garage is unpainted cinder block one of the walls will be furred out and lathed to conceal plumbing etc. Know it’s a lot but thanks if you could respond.

Morning David, I'd advise your second room to be completed as the first.
You said you applied a diamond finish over the imperial base finish without a bonding agent, That was correct as a bonding agent was not necessary.
However, you must wet the imperial basecoat before the diamond finish with a plasterers water mister such or a Hudon sprayer or the basecoat with suck out the moisture from the finish coat, hence cause cracking.
I dont advice any exterior being used inside as the sand is too thick, one can only trowel down sand so smooth, even if your incredible stong, exterior plasters can't be trowel down smooth.
The Diamond plaster has no sand, so this plaster can be troweled smooth.

    Hello Kirk/All,
My wife and I purchased a 1915 4-square 6 months ago. It needs some TLC; every room has some level of cracking, bulging plaster or poorly patched areas. The first room we tackled only had a couple 6”x6” areas in which the surface coat had popped loose and no gross patch jobs. We used drywall compound for the holes and it looks good.
The next room is a lot rougher. The base is tight, which is good, though there are large areas where the top coat has loosened. Additionally, there are large areas that were previously poorly patched. It also appears someone used plaster of paris in previous repairs. I don’t know if that makes a difference. It also appears that a skim coat of drywall compound has been applied just under the ochre-colored paint. It also seems that, in the places in which drywall compound has been used, I cannot easily remove it (scrape) to the base plaster. This seems essential to get a smooth coat. ( I also have to be careful, because one of the worst imperfections is just above the radiator. I don’t want the trouble of draining the system and removing the radiator in the middle of winter.)
    Link to photos: 1drv.ms/f/s!Ap-yf4kzCfhAgZd5wDrBe9SL4ycNlQ
    So I have multiple questions.
    1. Can a plaster veneer be feathered for areas near the radiator? If not, what is the best (not necessarily the easiest) way to remove poorly patched areas down to plaster?
    2. Should the rest of the walls be chipped/scraped to the base coat? If not, should plaster be applied in 2 layers: the first to cover the holes and bring the surface to one level before applying the veneer coat?
The ceiling will also be renovated during this project. How that occurs will depend on the condition of the plaster underneath the hideous tiles.
    Thank you all,
    Jeff

O so this lime plaster maybe just what i need for a hard plaster for my art projects. Its mixing lime and gypsum/plaster of paris together. I see that maybe what the gypsum hard statues are made of...Aka a lime plaster either that or a cement plaster mixture of (cement + gypsum). This made me think of looking into using cement and lime mixed in with gypsum / plaster of paris. Because gypsum or plaster of paris is just to brittle/chalky to be a final product that lasts long in harsh environments in terms of statues/art objects.

Howdy Sam I am, you can do this, when you use cement or portland cement the portland cement takes over the gypsums rendering it sort of useless, but if it works for you, I say continue.
FYI, the more Lime added to Portland cement plaster the slower the set time as a rule.

Hi Kirk & family If we have drywall up that the plumbing company put in, and started doing a bit of Fast Set Lite 20 setting type compound. Initial partial coat to smooth between the traditional lathe & plaster painted smooth walls (1921 or a 1950 remodel) where the bathtub /shower was torn out. How do I go about plastering this? Do i need to start with bonding agent Larsen's Plaster Weld ? @@StuccoPlastering Hi Kirk. Love the videos, keep them coming! I am working on an old home built in 1830, or before. The plaster got wet at some point and leaks were resolved some time in the past. I removed wallpaper covering cracks and hanging sections that I have cut out and prepped with 45 minute USG Durabond.I also re-enforced springy or weakened lathe. I am now almost finished filling and surfacing the cracks and large areas that were crumbling and falling away from the lathe. I am ready to do the Diamond veneer finishing coat but did not know about the Imperial veneer base coat. Is it safe for me to do a finishing coat over the existing old plaster and my Durabond patches? I am thinking to paint on plasterers bond and then go straight to the Diamond veneer finish. Would this be ok, or should I put a base coat on first? All old areas of the old plaster that seemed to have movement were drilled and secured with a glue gun and corrugated plaster washers and are very secure. I want it as close to the original breathing lime and horsehair plaster to stay with the period, and I am hoping the Diamond veneer you recommend will be the best option short of a horsehair mix done in the past. Please advise when you have time. Thank you so much for all your wonderful knowledgeable video. I would never have gotten this far without them!

Hello, the way I did here, but instead of water, you would brush or paint on a cement/stucco bonding agent. Such as Weld-crete by Larsons, or Quikrete sold at HD.
It does not matter what finish one uses or if it's interior or exterior.
Without a bonding agent being applied to a very clean surface the plaster/stucco will perhaps adhere for a year to possibly up to five. However and eventually, it will separate.

Hi, it's confusing how many different plasters you use on interiors and exteriors for that matter,
I'm sure someone from the U.K. Has already said to you at some point, I'm a chippy by trade and most interior finishes I see are British gypsum, skimming.
I wondered if you could try a skimming video using the multi finish gypsum I'd be interested in your skilled review 👍🏻
Ps I really enjoy your videos

Howdy Mp, no doubt it is confusing how many plastering manufactures there are selling the same materials for interiors with different names, your not alone in this area.

Hey Mp H, I am a solid plasterer from Australia. Kirks videos are great but I think at times he uses the same terminology for many different products, tools etc. Australia and UK are very similar in products, tools and trade terms. We use British Gypsum thistle multi finish here in Australia but have been told by British Gypsum that their products are not designed to be used with our plasterboard. Sucks because its a amazing product !!Amazing work as per usual Kirk !!! Great to see such passion, Its a fading trade here in Australia....

Good day Jarrad happy Independence Day,
I have not seen the Thistle-Multifinish Plaster British Gypsum, although I'm aware of it's purpose,
Thus we have to use whats available here, there are about 5 to 10 veneer base coats and finishes, here in the U.S.
all similar, I would bet if i applied the Thistle to other veneers I would not be able to tell the difference as most quality product have a bit more lime in them which over here lime cost twice as much as in the UK.

Can I do the structo-lite and the the diamond Veneer and then lay a bit of tile over that?

      @StuccoPlastering  6 лет назад +1

Howdy Alysbar, you can, however, if it were me I'd lay the tile on the structo-lite base coat, not the finish coat.

Howdy Sammy, cute, no such trowel exists, or I might be using it, you're referring to a cement sweep.

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. i understand sir, but your videos are viewed mostly by ppl that are interested in learning how to plaster or how it looks in the end and many other reasons,Im sure other plasterers that are not on your level yet watch also hoping to catch some thing they dont know. It is interesting, dont you need to see your work and what you are doing in places where lighting is not enough?

ruclips.net/video/Zh1aW1Tg_bg/видео.html/ We started this one early; ten hours later, we asked the owners if they could spare some lighting; they could not; thus we were forced to make due, such as life. i do understand what you say, but circumstances don't always allow for the necessary lighting.👨🏻‍🔬
