I remember at least one of the stores downtown having a vacuum tube system like banks use where a floor sales clerk would put your bill and money in a brass? container that would be pulled up a tube to a clerk who would make change and send it back down with your receipt to the floor clerk who made the sale. The piping and pumps you showed could be the vacuum pumps that pulled the containers up the tubes.
During the fifties downtown Gary was like a wonderland for kids at Christmas time, the streets lights and stores were decorated really nicely, the Movie Christmas story reminds of Gary in that era. .. Thanks for the explore, it brought back good memories of my mom and aunt who would meet us at Kresge dime store down from the Palace theater and then do their shopping.

I'm surprised they actually lasted that long. The store was probably the equivalent of a Marshall Fields or maybe even Bonwit Teller back in the day!

I am surprised vandals have not burned it to the ground. Great video. Grazie.

From Leo: Start a good business in 1923, work hard and build it for decades. 1967 comes and they are closed by 1972. A multi million dollar property is left to waste away. What a tragedy.

Barb Melle Yeah, a lot of the downtown stores were gone by the mid seventies.

Looked like the control room for the sprinkler system.

My mother would shop there and I would sneak across the street and play the pinball machines at Jack and Jill's. I would hurry and find her before I missed the bus, thanks storm, I miss the good ole days.
