    I lived in Hammond and worked in Merrillville, and there were many times that 80/94 was backed up for days, and I wanted to get home before I had to be back at work the next day, I would get off on Broadway and cut down 15th Avenue - (the exception being in the winter when it would be dark early). It made me sad to see so many homes either abandoned, burned, or turned into drug houses.......Gary has an amazing history, and during the time that I was there, I saw some neighborhoods literally change completely with homeowners taking over their homes and restoring these sections to safe, beautiful, and homes to be proud of. I have left the area, and my hope is that all of the 'hoods can take pride in their surroundings and do whatever they can to make Gary a city to be proud of. (I totally agree with you about the City - unless there's a buck to be made or some other incentive, they turn a blind eye to everything else - and you don't see them living anywhere near the blighted areas).

    Been watching your vids a lot. Your doing a great job documenting the city. I born in Gary and hate that it’s gotten so bad. Makes me sad when I come to visit and drive around the old hood. GLEN PARK boy here.

    Just started watching some of your older videos of Gary & Miller to see some of the places I grew up and where I trashed around as a teenager and I love the many places you have filmed I lived at 600 Jefferson st , empty lot now. Also 13th ave. Aetna and walked the streets of Miller always wanted to go back and look but you've done that for me and I thank you. I`m not a computer person but since I have one now you've taking me back in time to places in my past that my mom and dad use to take me. I left Gary in 1979 been in Florida since but I`ll never forget where I grew up you made many memories come back, and I thank you. Great job Storm !

    I catching up with your videos. After seeing this video and last week's video, 2 videos with streets full of abandoned houses, I wondered how it could be possible and what city we were dealing with.After reading a little about this city, I understood that the population has decreased since 1960 when the iron company has closed, it has decreased from 178,000 to 76,000 today. 100,000 people less, it's drastically decreasing a population, so it is normal for many houses and businesses to be empty. This is not a reason to find trash everywhere, the city should do something for the remaining population. I like your videos and your way of thinking and your way of saying it. Continuous to make your videos, we are there and we all look at them.

    The Spirit of the Living God Church looks like the Immanuel Lutheran Church I was baptized at and attended during my childhood. The Pastor and his wife are still living, in their '90's, and I messaged her and asked the address. She said it was 3956 Washington and they lived in the apartment building next door. This says 3960 Washington on this church building.

    • @TheSteelCityStorm
      @TheSteelCityStorm  6 лет назад +3

      This is it then Janice and that apartment next door was probably where they lived at this is terrible to see today isn't it. Thank You for your comment and story I like hearing these from people appreciating what I do out here to show everyone what is really going on beyond broadway. I like to think I am doing it for the kids since the officials don't care and here is the proof. GOD Bless

      It is just heartbreaking. This was a beautiful church and community. My mom's friends were original owners of Glen Park Tile and Carpet. Their family came here from Poland for a better life. They lived through the depression. They worked hard and started that successful business and took great pride in their accomplishments and in their community. We loved that church and were church family, helping each other and loving each other. I think that is what is lost there now- pride and love.

    I live in Chicago, and deliver medical prescriptions all over the Chicagoland area. I make it to Gary maybe a half dozen times a year. I think the reason the City doesn't tear these places down or clean up the garbage is because Gary is flat broke. The City could fine the property owners but most of these places are delinquent. The owner is long gone. I'm not making excuses for City leadership or the State leadership, but there isn't much of a tax base in Gary anymore. I don't doubt you about Political corruption though, because that seems to be everywhere. The Mills closing did a number on Gary.

      Ken Kunz Do you make a very valid point and I will agree with you it’s hard seeing it the way it is but to me the worst part is watching the kids being raised in that mess seeing all the garbage and abandonment it is depressing for an adult I cannot imagine being a kid living there like that

    I think the big problem with Gary is at some point the undesirables took over. Both in the community and at city hall. When this happens all the money leaves town and it doesn’t take long before the city begins to rot. The only fix for this is money and nobody in their right Mind would risk their money by investing in this place with the current government and community attitude

    Although I appreciate your attention to this travesty, I can understand how residents would feel about seeing a white man recording devastation in their neighborhood. I know this is the platform for you to display your findings. How about taking it a step farther...deliver them to the hands of those who are responsible for cleaning up. Maybe you have done this already. I'm just saying besides recording, do you have the passion to hold people accountable? I think you do. I'm sure you would have a lot of support from the residents as well. I look forward to seeing more on RUclips and in city hall.

    Doesn't anyone live there? I wonder if there are people or maybe small family that lives in the only livable house on a huge block. I wonder what it is like to be in that house during the night and during the winter.
    Does anyone think tere are a few people living in some of those houses? Maybe a few and far in between, huh?

    Where are the owners???? I'm sure the last residents were renters. The owners need to be held responsible!

      I notice one common factor about these homes and owners, plus the other residents. It seems property values and the up keep and taxes have priced the life out of the ownets. They couldn't keep up with maintenance cost, repairs and taxes despite having a half way decent job back then. Throw in social discord and add the 80s, 90s and 2000s drug war and people lost their livelihoods, it isn't any wonder why most American cities are collapsing.

    These people in this church are likely all from this area and they are probably old. Its not their job to clean up after the whole city. They obviously dont have money to fix up their own church so what are they supposed to do. Okay, so they clean up the trash one Saturday. They come back for Bible Study on Wednesday and three more pieces of shit have dumped their trash in the same place they just cleaned. It is the City's job to maintain public property and enforce code on private property. Thanks for filming this. Maybe something will be done, doubtful but hopeful. The city leaders need to be tared and feathered. This is just one of hundreds of neighborhoods just like it all over this country.
