This just makes you wonder where have all the people gone? I think that was the name of a song by Peter, Paul and Mary that I used to listen to as a teenager. They probably got their inspiration for it from this place. It seems like the buildings weren't bad when they were new. Nothing like the Cabrini Green project in Chicago anyway. If I were underprivileged, at least when these were new, I think they would have been pretty nice to live in. It beats the streets anyway. I know when Chicago started bulldozing the projects, the gangs started moving out to the suburbs. I wonder if something like that happened here. Seeing this kind of thing does make me feel extra grateful for my Leave it to Beaver childhood upbringing. When kids are born into poverty, they already start life out with one strike against them. It's a terrible cycle that keeps going until someone steps up and decides they can do better despite the obstacles in their way. I hope all of these former residents were able to do better. Ya know, I just love your gang of boys here. What fun that must have been for all of you. Not only that, things like what you do are always safer in groups. You guy's are so funny too, made me laugh in a few spots along the way. Love this video! Tell the gang I said hello even though they have no idea who I am. Keep em' guessing. It's more fun that way. Gosh, this makes me want to come back soon!
These housing projects such as Delaney housing projects, and the Dori Miller projects were designed for people getting out of the service so they could establish themselves and then move out. Unfortunately lot of people once they found out it was cheap to live there just stayed there and never left. With that being said all these families having a bunch of kids, it made it overcrowded, and once those kids got older, and they never left the projects the crime and drugs started. A couple of my uncles actually lived in the Dory Miller projects. We also documented those. Unfortunately the inside were all made of wood and had a lot of asbestos inside of them. Then later down the line, when nobody else wanted to go there because of the conditions and the crime they became notorious for shootings, drug overdoses and robberies. There was an article about the police, refusing to go inside of these places, because in the late 80s and 90s a couple police officers were ambushed inside of this one which is the Delaney project. I love reading your comments and yes to think back about the leave it to Beaver and Brady Bunch days who would’ve ever thought these places would turn into such a nightmare. We always went out in big groups with trusted compadres because these places are very dangerous to go if you are not aware of your surroundings. We were all packing heat and always ready but hoping nothing whatever happened to us inside of these places. They were fun days of exploring, but for the city itself I am glad to see these places gone now they were so dangerous and had such a bad reputation. Nobody even wanted to go Past them. I knew someday that these videos would find their way to show people how bad these projects were and why they needed to be demolished. I have a photo of me sitting on my mother lap and my two brothers and sister posing on the porch in front of our apartment in the Delaney projects. The year was 1953. I was a year old. When I heard that it would be demolished I was sad. It was like our lives meant nothing. There is something devastating about seeing your history wiped out. I remember horses hauling fruit on a wagon and the man anouncing to the neighborhood that he had arrived with baskets of onions, corn, melon, fish, and anything you needed. And like you said in the video, "This is Crazy!" My mother passed away two years ago. I wanted to bring her cremations back home to Gary. I cried because I couldn't. I could not honor her in that way. I want to thank you for exposing the ruins of Gary to America. This should never happen! Thank you. Thank you. And please be careful and place mask on your faces. At 2 mins and 54 ...That is my old elementary school David O. Duncan. That's not Beckman Junior High School. Also the School that sits to the right behind David O. Duncan on 21st and Polk is Lincoln School where I went to Preschool. I was born and raised in G.I. (Gary, Indiana). I just recently moved back to Northwest Indiana area from Texas and this truly saddens me. I definitely remember happier times growing up on 24th and Lincoln street, 23rd and Jackson street and 22nd and Adams street next to where the old Gary Bus Barn use to be. I also grew up on the east side of Gary in Marshall Town Terrace as well. Seeing my hometown look like this is devastating. 😔💔😔💔😔💔😔💔😔💔😔 Storm, I just discovered your channel since moving back and have vicariously traveled back in time through some of your video. Thank you for sharing, you are appreciated.
Thank You for clearing that up for me Chosen. I know it’s hard to see our childhood memories look like this I attended Franklin Elementary and Lew Wallace they are just as bad. 🌺😉❤️
I used to live at 2109 Pierce St. When I was 6 years old in 1968 before moving to 25th and Morton in 1970 and then to Glen Park on 41st and Pierce St. And that elementary school was Duncan and Lincoln school was behind it. Beckmann was a middle school up the street on Pierce St. Love the videos, brings back good memories. Gary was a good city! Keep up the good work!
Drew Bradley Thank you very much for your comment I am glad you are enjoying the videos and hope to see more comments on the videos from you sharing memories and remembering good times is what we are trying to achieve along with helping people clean up Gary a little bit
The places you capture are just a loss of words. To read up on these stories and to see the overhead map view of the areas is just completely unbelievable. To see those 2 decent size schools vacant, the areas vacant. To even think this is in the United States and all this happening is really sad. Richest Country? Really! It’s sad to see what happens in our inner cities. What blows my mind more is how we can get residents to leave this area!!! From an Article: The federal agency awarded the Gary Housing Authority $3.2 million in March to demolish Delaney West and Concord Village. The vacant developments, which totaled 254 housing units across 49 buildings!!!!!! Do people even realize how much $3.2 Million is?!? That comes out to just over $65,000 a building to be ripped down. $3.2 Million to 254 units is $12,600 a unit. . . NOW!!!!!! The average income of a Gary resident is $15,983 a year. The US average is $28,555 a year. - The Median household income of a Gary resident is $27,458 a year. The US average is $53,482 a year. You tell me what’s wrong with this picture? Now what’s going to be put on that land? We have Trump with the Ukraine ordeal, he withheld Hundreds of Millions in Aid!!!! To a foreign country!!!! What about Tens of Millions to help out Gary, IN and many other American Cities on a sad decline to not make it look like a Third World Country? Our system is just an absolute disgrace. . . . I appreciate all the documentation because it’s a true eye opener to say the least, but is anything going to change?!?! Thanks for posting. . . Stay Safe!
Wow you passed two of my old houses. I was hoping that one was open so you could go in. 2003 was when I left there. I still have fond memories of growing up there. So thank you for still seeing the beauty when others only see the worst of the city. It was nice to see my old school and old houses still standing. Hope I get to visit before they are completely gone. I still love my old city.
I do these videos for good memories and I am so glad that you got to see your old place it said the way it is but they are all demolished now we did this video before the wrecking ball thank you so much for leaving a comment I hope you’re enjoying the channel there are many many other videos you will probably remember ❤️👈😎☝️💯
The school on 21st he was driving past was not Beckman it was former Duncan elementary school. Home of the Bumble Bees. I went there from Kindergarten to 6th Grade then went to Beckman. They turned it into a girl's school.
These were the equivalent of townhomes back in the day. It was beautiful! Until the drugs invaded the city. A man was murdered in Delaney over a dice game that he won. It was the 90's. The loser shot him. My father fought in WW2. His ship "USS Franklin was bombed by the Japanese. He survived, landing in Gary in 1946. He couldn't get a house on the G.I. Bill because Gary was segregated. My parent moved here and there until Delaney was built and that is where they landed. Gary has a lot of history. I didn't know what a sub sandwich or had a pizza until I went down to Bloomington at I.U. in 1971. Back then we couldn't cross over into Glen and Gleason park. Fast food was running into the house when your mama called you in for supper and you'd better eat fast before your siblings got seconds. So having fast food named "submarine sandwich and pizza", was an amazing experience. Gary has a lot of history. Sorry to talk so much. You guys opened up and lot of memories. A storm is certainly coming. May Jah keep you safe and Bless you real real good.
Cool video, the last of the hood! I grew up in the projects just like those ones and they are still there thriving with tenants and still clean. I’m sure one day they will turn out just like these ones!
Lisa Loves Her Chihuahuas I appreciate you leaving a comment I enjoyed reading it and do you have a good point I also agree with you on that if you let things go too long there’s no turning back no matter what it is especially this many people being that close together and not looking out for one another is a recipe for disaster we see this over and over even in our old neighborhood it’s unbelievable to conditions to homes are in and how they got that way Once again thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and my mom has a Chihuahua that I love too 🐕 👈💯😁👍
More suggestions for you and your amazing crew? On the intersection of Massachusetts and 6th ave there is a HUGE white stone building with no identifying signs to identify what it was but the entrance was wide open, there were two bombed out Victorian style mansion's on the corner of Delaware and Virginia st ( they must have been spectacular 60 or 70 years ago and are close enough to jump from roof to roof, the building on the corner of 8th ave /600 West st Also I went down Van Buren st and you could spend a whole day going from house to house ?
Pretty badass place man! Always live the creepy as heck atmosphere of large abandonments and the end of the world vibe. Watch out flying the drone if you are within 5 miles of any airport or hospital, FAA is hella hardcore with fines and jail time over restricted flight areas which is why I was pissed at Josh for flying at the church in aircraft landing paths! Great vid Storm!
Yea we grew up on 35th & conn. But lived dowtown when we're real young I do believe & the Miller housing projects..all I know is in the 80s & 90s you did NOT go anywhere near Delaney
Ok guys I'm back. The report I got was that projects we're no longer the best solution to house the poor. The housing authority opted for scattered site housing because it stated Gary's population had decreased. According to Mayor Freeman. Residents were concerned that the vacant buildings would attract crime. I think they had about two murders after residents moved out.I think some bull is going on because Gary started accepting section eight applicants from Illinois and according to my friends that's when the crime levels around Gary spiraled. I can't vouch for that but anyway you are safe guys the shutdown was the West Calumet project in East Chicago Ind.
@@Theloquaciousone i was born and raised in gary indiana and Delaney was my old stomping grounds...i stayed with family members out there and yes one section 8 was opened to Chicago ppl gary went all the way down... especially the glen park neighborhood...
Nicolemc Anderson Did you see we did a video on Beckman school too ? I lived in Fort Collins Colorado for five years I loved it up there but I had to move back here for family reasons
I lived here a little while growing up. Worse part of my childhood. 1106 W 21st pl. There was a park there we called “Ringworm Park.” I remember there was a dead dog in the park for weeks 😞
Pretty crazy it’s gone now they are building a warehouse there a private company bought the land Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment I hope you’re enjoying the channel in the videos
2019 Google street view there were still residents occupying apartments on Philmore & 22nd. People sitting outside! Crazy!! Back in 2005 it was blocked off with only one way in and one way out. Gary police everywhere.
Geee Ohhh Christmas - What a WASTE of tax payer money- Where did the people go that was there ???? . Millions of dollars to build and 3.4 million dollars to tear it down . 3.4 million dollars would clean up a lot of garbage that thrown out on the streets of Gary
I would suggest places but I live in Virginia. Love & Support. Like I tell the other channels I watch here money is tight. So I share your videos ♥️♥️♥️

This is the hood, home were me and my cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, parents, the whole family generation grew up down the street Gary, Indiana 2465 Fillmore St. Back then there was mostly us black folks( my era 1995 to 2003)
I'm leaning toward Storm's thoughts about the fact that NW Indiana's location at the crossroads of America I80 I65 and I94 is prime for logistical warehousing and trucking. Manufacturing is also my opinion for the area. The people are gone and land is cheap.
at 12:39 a lady named Maria Robinson dropped that paper of the notice to appeal, walked out of that room and never came back. She did not sign it and I wonder where she went.........21:18..nature is taking back that playground where children used to run :( :( :( who was the last child on the ladder before the gentleman in the blue track suit climbed on it :( :(
Like your video's. No places around me to do a Urban exploring. You should do a business proposal to the mayor on Urban exploring. Might bring in explorers and revenue, you would be a good guide. visitors would be safe. So why so many abandoned neighborhoods? I haven't found any follow up video's on why?
@@TheSteelCityStorm thank you I knew he look familiar. I attended Ambridge Elementary school in the 70s it really ashamed the school is closed . My step Dad home is up the street at 444 Rutledge Street , he pass away in his sleep at the age 80 last year .
I have a friend that lives on Taft Street in Gary, Indiana. She doesn't talk much about Gary. I ask her questions, but she tries to avoid them, or will give a one or two word answers. She'll talk about everything except Gary. Which is wierd, makes me wonder why she's so secretive. Makes me wanna come check Gary out for myself. I live in North Carolina. Is it safe to say that Gary is almost a Ghost Town?
From Leo: No matter how much money you throw at a problem, you cannot overcome poverty of mind. People with that mind set refuse to act right and ruins everything. The preacher calls it sin. Think of what that project and that school cost the productive people of the formerly great City of Gary. Scattered site public housing does not work either. Those of poverty mentality just spread the crime over a wider section of the city. Been there, done that, in Cook County, Illinois.
Here's a link to an article about the planned demolition of the Delaney projects. www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/post-tribune/news/ct-ptb-gary-gha-demolition-st-0619-20160617-story.html
Why must people be this way, can't take care of anything no matter how cheap or even free the rent is, why because it's not a mansion, why? Use these places as a stepping stone to move up,... not something to shit on.
That’s a great question this my theory When you have people who are poor and never own anything, they don’t seem to take much pride in the community. Self-esteem plays a lot as well when you have a sense of hopelessness like you can’t achieve anything your mindset becomes stagnant and you begin to think 🤔 inferior. That’s why the 10 churches in the community are taking advantage of those people mindsets.
Trippin' on your vids. Grew up 4021 Ohio St. Left in '72. I knew it was bad but shit. Las time there was '89 Mercy Hospital to Father who almost lost his hand at US Steel. Love to hang with and your crew sometime. Didn't know there were any white Hpmeys still. Be careful, Dude. Peace

It was demolished long ago. Too many murders there. It was a true High Rise style project with large buildings. When we moved out of Delaney we lived near there. Off 15th ave and Stevenson ST. the second street was Fairbanks on the far west side. Only the streets are left. My mom still lives nearby. I played over there as a kid. Don't miss my time in Delaney at all. 2220 Garnett
So you guys only do Documentaries of abandoned Homes and Project areas in Gary? (Because) You would not be able to enter these areas, if they were occupied. You would be chased away, or even severely hurt. You can't blame the residents, whom use to live in those abandoned properties, and as to why they don't live there anymore. BAD MANAGERS (Who basically don't even live in Indiana?) Force Tenants to move out, because the rent is raised. Tenants struggle with faulty wiring. Toilets that don't flush. No A/C in the summer; and inadequate heat during the winter; (But still?) The Managers raise their rent. (Now!) They wake up in the morning, to a letter in their Mailbox; stating the property will be demolished; and they have 1 year to relocate! Don't think for one moment; that these "Slum Lords" care!. SMH! 🤯 They are living large; Just not in Indiana. In the long run? Maybe another piece of property will be built on that site; like a Qwiky-Mart/Gas Station/Liquor store!. The Arabs bundle everyhing, and they don't put price tags on anything!. They will get your money, but you won't get theirs 😡

Hey thanks for sharing and showing my old childhood home. We lived at 1011 W 22nd Ave in the 70’s (70-77) at that time most neighbors looked out for each other. We played out in the front yard, rode our bikes up and down the street, got wet up by water sprinklers on hot days. I’ve got mixed emotions it was good and bad. From age 6-11 it was good. Then when I was 12, a couple of our neighbors shot my dad with a BB gun and killed him. Then my mom got us out of there in “77” we left before it got really bad.
Thank You for sharing your memories I just read your comment to my wife & said this is exactly why I do these videos for the memories they wake inside of us when we were young with fun memories. I am so sorry to hear about your dad Charise Cheers to the good memories in life 🥂😉💯💖

Id love to explore something like this!! Great video!

Storm, I just discovered your channel since moving back and have vicariously traveled back in time through some of your video. Thank you for sharing, you are appreciated.
Thank You for clearing that up for me Chosen. I know it’s hard to see our childhood memories look like this I attended Franklin Elementary and Lew Wallace they are just as bad.

Thanks for your prompt reply! I live in Nashville, Tennessee. If you’re ever down this way let me know
Were these projects originally WWII housing for the steel workers brought up to work from down south and Europe?
I do these videos for good memories and I am so glad that you got to see your old place it said the way it is but they are all demolished now we did this video before the wrecking ball thank you so much for leaving a comment I hope you’re enjoying the channel there are many many other videos you will probably remember

You are speaking truth to power Sir
The school on 21st he was driving past was not Beckman it was former Duncan elementary school.
Home of the Bumble Bees.
I went there from Kindergarten to 6th Grade then went to Beckman.
They turned it into a girl's school.
I used to live there...2125 Fillmore street. And got to visit and see it fenced off. Wish I woulda went in there and got footage
I lived there back in late 80's and all of the 90's, I miss it and my homies
Lisa Loves Her Chihuahuas I appreciate you leaving a comment I enjoyed reading it and do you have a good point I also agree with you on that if you let things go too long there’s no turning back no matter what it is especially this many people being that close together and not looking out for one another is a recipe for disaster we see this over and over even in our old neighborhood it’s unbelievable to conditions to homes are in and how they got that way
Once again thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and my mom has a Chihuahua that I love too 🐕 👈💯😁👍
I love your videos, I lived in Delaney back in 94.
What a nice thing to say I really appreciate that Tawnee hope to see more comments from you on other videos also 😉💖🥂
Isn't Delaney over there by Roosevelt high school on 25th
Sharon Novak Yes and I am sorry it took so long to answer your question I did not see it until just now thank you for your comment
That is insane! That actually looks like what are now termed "luxury apartments", playground and all
Steel city storm you should invest on a 360 video camera it makes the viewers be their with you but awesome video
Great vid Storm!
i like your work you are doing
loren p Thank you very much hope to see more comments from you soon and I hope that you subscribe to the channel to see future videos
Yea we grew up on 35th & conn. But lived dowtown when we're real young I do believe & the Miller housing projects..all I know is in the 80s & 90s you did NOT go anywhere near Delaney
Midwest Flesh You said it perfectly brother
Atleast u kno lol
Hi guy long time from herring and seeing you!!! I hope you two are well!!!!✌🏽🙋🏽♀️
Omegosh! How many buildings this place got? Half brick and half siding! That's a fixture upper!
Thank you Ceylon
I graduated from Beckman Middle School and then I moved to Denver, Colo. for 2 years
Nicolemc Anderson Did you see we did a video on Beckman school too ?
I lived in Fort Collins Colorado for five years I loved it up there but I had to move back here for family reasons
Nicolemc Anderson Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment I enjoyed reading it
I lived here a little while growing up. Worse part of my childhood. 1106 W 21st pl. There was a park there we called “Ringworm Park.” I remember there was a dead dog in the park for weeks 😞
Have you heard of the Miller projects in Gary Indiana?
oh yes
Yes lived there for 14 years of my life
I think it's torn down now but grew up there
I did not know Delaney is gone.... wow.
Pretty crazy it’s gone now they are building a warehouse there a private company bought the land
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment I hope you’re enjoying the channel in the videos
@JamieGray we still standing on 1 leg 🤘🏾
2019 Google street view there were still residents occupying apartments on Philmore & 22nd. People sitting outside! Crazy!!
Back in 2005 it was blocked off with only one way in and one way out. Gary police everywhere.
Geee Ohhh Christmas - What a WASTE of tax payer money- Where did the people go that was there ???? . Millions of dollars to build and 3.4 million dollars to tear it down . 3.4 million dollars would clean up a lot of garbage that thrown out on the streets of Gary
Thank you Norm. Very well put. The money went in politicians and business contractors pockets.

Iow income apartments in Gary Indiana the need to rebuild it give the people's a blessing in life
This is the hood, home were me and my cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, parents, the whole family generation grew up down the street Gary, Indiana 2465 Fillmore St. Back then there was mostly us black folks( my era 1995 to 2003)
Grew up there and stayed evey were in there from harrison to Fillmore
Those buildings are supposed to be torn down. Thanks for camera switch, better sound.
Why did they just leave the housing project & not complete it & let people move in? This is wild & weird. Never seen anything like this before.
The word on the street is that various investors are buying Gary land. For why? I dunno?
That's a very good question.
All time low, why else? Just wait until the city recovers and cash in!
New casino being built in gary
I'm leaning toward Storm's thoughts about the fact that NW Indiana's location at the crossroads of America I80 I65 and I94 is prime for logistical warehousing and trucking. Manufacturing is also my opinion for the area. The people are gone and land is cheap.
Gary will be a mini vegas that's why people buying land to cash in when the casinos come
I used to work in Michigan City and I worked with some brothers who used to talk about Marshalltown in Gary. Is that Delaney? Anyone?
No Marshalltown is another project it has been torn down
i think ive seen your van before
Wow that seems so crazy the projects are closing Why! Now where all the people gonna go. Crazy
at 12:39 a lady named Maria Robinson dropped that paper of the notice to appeal, walked out of that room and never came back.
Haha Scott sent me.. subscribed and liked.. gonna keep checking u out.
Awe thanks for the heart? Can't wait to see you and Scott's collabs😁
Crazy i grew up in Delaney projects 1020 west 22nd Avenue😔😭😭
1108 West 22nd Court...between Fillmore and Pierce.
Went to Duncan and Beckman and The 'Velt!!
Move to Minneapolis at 14..
The guy with the Astros baseball cap on , Is he the guy that did the video on Ambridge Elementary school.
Yes he is
@@TheSteelCityStorm thank you I knew he look familiar.
No it still has a lot of life just needs a good cleaning up

I live in Delaney
From Leo: No matter how much money you throw at a problem, you cannot overcome poverty of mind. People with that mind set refuse to act right and ruins everything. The preacher calls it sin. Think of what that project and that school cost the productive people of the formerly great City of Gary.
Scattered site public housing does not work either. Those of poverty mentality just spread the crime over a wider section of the city. Been there, done that, in Cook County, Illinois.
Barb Melle I agree with you Barb 100% you cannot throw money at a problem and expect it to go away people have to want to change
100% Real Talk!
its not a crime to be poor
Here's a link to an article about the planned demolition of the Delaney projects.

City moved the ppl out...my aunt stayed out there...had a few folks that stayed out there...i grew up not too far from there
Trippin' on your vids. Peace
Basically, Gary's not that scary anymore. No one's there, for the most part.
Has The Storm lost a few pounds? 👍

Why must people be this way, can't take care of anything no matter how cheap or even free the rent is, why because it's not a mansion, why? Use these places as a stepping stone to move up,... not something to shit on, put themselves out. 👎
I agree with that comment 100% by the way they have torn it all down now there’s nothing there but a big fenced in grass it looks so much better
Shame the places really don't look that bad inside of the places in some of them government should rebuild a few for the homeless
Heath McDaniel They tore the entire place down now it’s all fenced in with nothing but grass
Thank you for leaving it, and I agree with you 100%
Is some baseball fields behind them or their gone

It was demolished long ago. Too many murders there. It was a true High Rise style project with large buildings. When we moved out of Delaney we lived near there. Off 15th ave and Stevenson ST. the second street was Fairbanks on the far west side. Only the streets are left. My mom still lives nearby. I played over there as a kid. Don't miss my time in Delaney at all. 2220 Garnett

Dam .... They tearing my hood down.. 2321 polk and 2221 fillmore.. U can demolish the bricks but me and my peoples wont be forgotten 91-2010
Thank You for that comment I respect what you said so I will let this comment stay to show we all have a say here on this channel as long as it stays Respectful
Have a nice day and hope all is well Angela I do appreciate you taking the time to leave that detailed comment

I am so sorry to hear about your dad Charise
Cheers to the good memories in life 🥂😉💯💖
