  • If you are going to splash big dosh on a bicycle, may as well do it right. This or a 14k flake of the mass produced QC wafer? You could build up a custom bike for a lot less than a full build from the big brands, and have a bag of change. Time to build now and thrash, to see if i can find some issues!

    Am interviewing FW next week regarding the design choices of the frame, including the bonded lugs, CNC processing, tube making, BB choice etc, failure modes etc. Fever of anticipation to see how this holds up to a winter of corrosion. Bit of background as this was a very quick video: Jon and I initiated this frame idea over a year ago. He offered to make one for the channel allowing me free reign on the geo. No money swapped hands - his and Elyse’s man hours of labour all poured in for free so I am forever grateful for that, i just paid the import duty! Cant wait to build this up and for me I envisage it as the ultimate road bike for my use case.

Same for made-to-measure/custom geometry and certainly nothing new about bonding carbon tubes into metal lugs - I glued a few Alan/Nishiki bikes (made the same way) back together in my bike shop daze.
      Hard to believe you couldn't have had any number of artisan builders make something to fit you with the features you wanted vs this CNC'd, metal/carbon bonded blast-from-the-past. But hey, the price was right, so...

It might also explain why I like climbing out of the saddle…

    There's a few brands doing additive manufactured lugs with carbon tubes... Once upon a time it was considered the only way to mass produce a carbon frame before we figured out other ways to do it. I know exactly how it benefits a smaller manufacturer in regards to prototyping etc, but I've never understood how any of these "bespoke" options benefit the consumer. The titanium lugs on an Atherton mountain bike don't mean a thing if you're still buying the same bike everyone else is getting, and if a brand were to offer custom geometry for every bike, it can be a sign that they have little confidence in any one particularly frame, or they can pass the blame onto the consumer if the lengths and angles weren't from their own stash of recommended values.
    At the end of the day, it's all just the same load of bicycle w*nk, but coming out of a different knob. Some of us geek out far too much about stuff that doesn't actually matter a whole lot. Have a bike, enjoy riding it, don't worry too much about anything else.

  • @davekashuba4730
    @davekashuba4730 День назад +11

    Regarding slack seat tube angles, some of us actually benefit from having a slack seat tube angle. I personally wind up with sore knees and overworked quads if I have my saddle's fore-aft position centered on a bike with a 73.5 degree seat tube angle + 20mm offset seatpost. My hamstrings aren't engaged at all. As soon as I move the saddle back about 10 - 15 mm, my leg muscles feel more "balanced", my power goes up, and I'm more efficient.

    Your engineering content is top notch, i learnt so much from you that i put in practice multiple times over the last few years. The small things, ultimately, are the crucial ones when it comes to bike geometry and biomechanic angles for efficient bike interaction.
    Looking at it with some experience and hours spent experimenting and learning up, one of my pet peeves must be people obsessed with post setback offset and saddle aft like it "has" to be part of the bike setup at all costs not to jeopardize your "center of gravity" and handling on the bike.
    Sure one could say it looks more ordinary and eye-pleasing, but arguments such as "balance point" and "pressure on wrists" (lol, keep running those 150mm seat-to-handlebar drops instead) without ever considering pedaling/body mechanics and the angles pop mass manufacturers work with on their edr slanted-top-tube bikes makes them look wild to me.
    Seeing anything under 73 is already questionable enough. But looking and some geo charts from top brands and seeing them lower the seat angle as the frames get bigger is just cringe worthy. Not only you get a worse geo, but you also have to factor in the higher overall seat height which compounds to ungodly amounts of setback behind the BB that no 'XL' legs can comfortably make up for. As if they had not the slightest idea.
    Might not be noticeable enough to the average joe on flat, but pushing the pedals on the climbs with a properly fore-set saddle with perhaps a degree or two of decline might just be one of the best feelings oh the bike, coming from a compromised sub-optimal "guideline-setup".
    Cool to see small but Anal manufacturers being showcased;) Thanks Pt

      As a taller guy with longer arms and torso, and proportionally long femurs, I get what you're saying completely, and couldn't disagree more :-) Give me high BBs, slack seat tubes and long, slammed front ends any day, none of this t-rex BS 🙂
      In all seriousness, though, it would be great to see brands offer half the number of spec levels/colours, in double the number of geometry options. Trek used to offer two fits in all their race bikes, and I would love to see another brand start to do that again, maybe even taking it further. There could be one with lower BB, steeper seat angle, shorter reach, higher stack and longer chainstays for the t-rexs, and one with higher BB, slacker seat angle, longer reach, shorter stays and lower stack for the dachshunds. Then I might be able to stop having to buy 150mm stems and layback seatposts...

    Finally, someone who understands bike geometry! You know, after you reviewed that Yoeleo and critised it's geometry, I delved deep into this topic. It seems to me like most brands have no idea what they're doing, see everyone do 72° head and seat angles and just copy it. I ended up designing my own gravel frame. I got to similar conclusions to you, but went a bit bolder. 78° seat angle, 67° head angle, 90mm bb drop and front center long enough to avoid toe overlap. It's the best handling bike I've ever ridden! Maybe the difficult thing about geometry is that each of these decisions is done for a reason and if you don't understand how they change the handling you won't be able to combine them into a good result.

    Wow, Peak Torque is again in agreement with my thinking.
    80mm BB drop, yes- I would add besides the shorter crank trend, BB heights were established back when pedals were at their worst for cornering.
    Big believer in positioning with focus on forearms parallel to the ground and PT has the data proof on that.
    Seat angle would likely work for my moderately tall 6'2".
    Here's the funny thing - I have a frame handmade in 2007 - lugged steel with a some of these designs. When it was made there was nobody would have guessed the competitive gravel cycling world trend towards this bike. It can even take 32mm tires and has the same head tube angle as that FW.
    I've compared it to modern gravel/all road designs and it's always close.
    Some of this design has been hiding in the audux (randonneur - sport touring) world. It's also close to what was stage raced before bikes began getting popped out of molds.

    I also have the problem of very long legs. This looks absolutely fantastic. Question about the slack-ish head angle: Is there really something behind the „nimble“ handling in road cycling? On the MTB side, going to slacker head angles was a game changer. Why not on a road bike? I mean to win the Tour de France you need a bike that can go down stable at 100kph but you don‘t need to turn on a spot like in cyclocross. I have a Merida Silex gravel bike which has 74.5 seat angle, 69 head angle and a shorter stem and I only see benefits.

    100% agree with the steeper seat tube angle. I am 6'6". I had a Battaglin San Luca made a few years ago with geometry based off a 63cm CAAD10 but incorporating a 74 degree STA and a 72.5 degree HTA. I run a zero-offset seatpost with my saddle mounted mid-rail. It really helps me keep my hip angle open when I am in the drops, especially with my 180mm *gasp horror* K-Force Light cranks. Couldn't get this geometry any other way than custom.

  • @fotmheki
    @fotmheki День назад

    I've similar body proportion, but I'm shorter then you, and I agree 100% on all.
    Steeper seat tube angle are needed in order to avoid having the saddle all the way forward also because most seatpost have a negative offset of 20 mm, those two combined are a mess with our body type. Also the BB drop, as I use 165 mm crack and big tyres (34 mm minimum) there should be higher drops in order to lower the centre of gravity, as you told. Last but not least, I have always toe overlap and it's very annoying.
    As I started touring this year now I see all those issues together, plus the fact that eyelet are so fragile. In November I'll do a bike design & construction course and I'm thinking of building my own bike

  • @Owwliv

    Hilariously, I have the opposite problem: long torso, short legs & I ride a 52 usually.
    The seat tube angles are usually 74, 75 or even 76.
    What I really need is a 72- and some bikes have that, but it's a problem of off the peg bikes for sure. can be a hassle to get a long enough lay-back seatpost.
    Looking forward to seeing this come together.
