  • We've all been told that if you want to build muscle (hypertrophy) you train with moderate reps, and if you want to build strength you use low reps, and that high reps are just for endurance.....BUT IS THIS REALLY TRUE??? Check out this episode of Advanced Training Techniques where we break down some of the basic science behind rep strategies and then I share how I train, for building muscle, and why!

This info is decades old, comes from the Olivia, Zane Arnold days. The phosphate system, muscle fibres, aeribuc/anaerobic system etc was taught in high school in 1985. It is gym folklore and has, been followed religiously. Hasn't changed, won't change.
Injuries come from youth and hitting maxxes prematurely or ignoring the mentioned basics. And they are basic. Know when to finish a set, don't be arrogant or cocky. Especially when on lower reps. If you struggled then that's it, that was last set. Stick on another 5-10kg, fuck it(which you already knew was a possibility) and there's ya injury.
He does not say don't go low and heavy. But again back to basics, even on low reps, strict form, control of weight control of movement. If you couldn't on 100kg, then you don't hit 105kg, in fact reverse pyramid, next set 95kg. I reverse pyramid after hitting 1RM 75%+ of the time. Or just drop heaps and go 10 then 20reps then fuck of to next exercise. On those 10reps+ post MAX. Really slow clean pure form with peak contractions.
Working out is the easy part, resr and nutrition are the hard part.

James I just discovered your page, it's like 15 light bulbs went off! I'm 36, only been lifting for 6 months, I'm 6'3, went from 238 to 197 lbs, 26.4 to 17.3% bodyfat, and I've been watching video after video with "other" guys on RUclips. You are different. Better! Much better! I cannot wait to try your workouts, especially for chest. I can't wait to feel that pump, and the burn in my pecs! I haven't yet in the last 6 months. I feel some soreness, but not anywhere like I do in other muscles. I'm starting to feel the mind-muscle connection and are able to squeeze before starting my reps. It has me so excited. I watch your videos (today) and I'm following the movements without weights and I feel it!! I CANNOT WAIT to feel it with weights! I think this is a turning point, or rather the point where the gains will start coming at a much faster pace.
    So thank you!
