Alright, hearing the GOP come right out and say "we don't want corporations in politics, just their money" was a hilarious moment of transparency. Of course it's still only a half truth, they're all for corporations supporting their politics, but not dissenting.
I think that was actually true, they wish they didn't have to follow donor orders but live for that donor money. They want the power and money all to themselves, how does that not sound like the most honest thing a politician has ever said? 😂
@@screwsinabell Exactly, it indicates a certain degree of cynicism, but I don’t think anyone could expect anything else at this point, all politics is is a collision between various interest groups, those interest groups with the most money and organization come out on top, the only difference is that in democracy as opposed to outright oligarchy there are rules about how you can treat the losers. It’s actually for this reason that I think the Republican party is in a much stronger place than what it initially seems to be in, they have a much smaller number of interest groups that need to share power within the party than the Democrats do, the interests of rural white Americans, and small business owners are not diametrically opposed either, the interest of rich white hipsters, and working class Black people on the other hand might be. Of course there’s the Overton window to consider, but I feel it has stopped moving to the left at this point on the whole, and is now pulling in both directions simultaneously depending on who you are, which is somehow even more concerning.
@@screwsinabell I mostly agree with you, though I think much of left wing RUclips is counting capitalism out far too quickly, it is an infinitely adaptable system simply because it relies on human nature, even in the old Soviet union you had capitalism existing, people would barter for goods that others could not get, and they would make capabilities for themselves to produce those goods, i.e. capital, but I digress. True capitalism furthermore is like true communism, it has never been tried nor will it ever be, and the happiest middle ground is one which minimizes the negative implications of both systems, i.e. what the Europeans have been trying to do for The last 70 years to varying degrees of success. You are certainly correct that the post war order is teetering, and we honestly don’t know what will replace it yet, it is obvious to everyone at this point that we are approaching a watershed like the revolutions of the 1840s, or the cultural shifts that occurred in the 1960s or some combination thereof. I consider myself a conservative, but that does not mean I do not smell the smoke, once inequality has become too great and political power concentrated too much in the hands of a few, the system becomes too disjointed and unresponsive to problems, thusly we are left with the options of major reform, or collapse. Now we can pretend that the problems are only economic, but I don’t think that’s true, while economic interests and material conditions can make common touchstones, the culture wars are as relevant as ever, even if the people currently fighting them don’t really understand them, one cannot deny that the widespread availability of birth control, no-fault divorce, and shall we say alternative lifestyles, have been at least as responsible for the drastic decline in marriage and birth rates as the economic conditions that have persisted in the west for The last few decades. This is not to completely discount the Marxist critique of capitalism, I think the idea that capitalism is largely responsible for the obvious degradation of western culture has a lot of truth to it given the homogenization of pop music, the prevalence of sequels and reboots amongst our cinema industry, and the outright popular disinterest in more esoteric and dare I say Good works, all in pursuit of the stickiest dollar. Even more highbrow works haven’t really moved on past the sort of existential nihilism or alternatively existential humanism if you’re very lucky, that was born in the 50s and 60s, but once again I digress to a significant degree.

I'll give $500 to the first interviewer that gets Trump (or any conservative talking head) to define "the left" without using buzzwords or dogwhistles. Edit: here are some definitions because people seem to be struggling with them Dogwhistle: a word or phrase that seems innocuous but is actually a signal to a group that understands the hidden meaning. Example: A politician says they support traditional family values, but what they're actually saying is they support specifically christian values. Replacing christian with family allows them garner support from the out-crowd while furthering their agenda with the in-crowd. Buzzword: a word or phrase that is both popular and used for the connotations rather than the definition. Example: A person says CRT is an attempt by the radical left democrats to push a marxist agenda and crush freedom. The sentence uses combinations of words that don't necessarily make sense, but they're emotionally charged to the point where it's more about the idea behind the sentence than the definitions of the words themselves. See also: anytime jordan peterson says "post-modern neo-marxist."
Reminds me of when Dave Rubin was talking to a guy and said something like "He's kind of a traditional lefty" and the guy asked "What does that mean" and Dave went off on a tangent about how we shouldn't look at things in terms of left vs. right anymore.

I wanna go to the misty blue lounge
@@screwsinabell
Exactly, it indicates a certain degree of cynicism, but I don’t think anyone could expect anything else at this point, all politics is is a collision between various interest groups, those interest groups with the most money and organization come out on top, the only difference is that in democracy as opposed to outright oligarchy there are rules about how you can treat the losers.
@@screwsinabell
I mostly agree with you, though I think much of left wing RUclips is counting capitalism out far too quickly, it is an infinitely adaptable system simply because it relies on human nature, even in the old Soviet union you had capitalism existing, people would barter for goods that others could not get, and they would make capabilities for themselves to produce those goods, i.e. capital, but I digress.
It was hilarious watching McConnell try to not bite the hand that feeds him when berating corporations for taking a political stance. Just a little gummy nip, like some shelled reptile ponderously munching some lettuce.

I'll give $500 to the first interviewer that gets Trump (or any conservative talking head) to define "the left" without using buzzwords or dogwhistles.
Edit: here are some definitions because people seem to be struggling with them
Dogwhistle: a word or phrase that seems innocuous but is actually a signal to a group that understands the hidden meaning.
I think he'd have trouble defining any word without dog-whistles. He is not a smart or coherent man.

Republicans: Don't tear down that statue, you'll erase history.
Also Republicans: You can't teach history anymore.
And Also: These statues are actually Democrats
@@SennaHawx The statues are paid actors.
Also, literally just read any actual book and you can see that there was a party switch in the 60s (dixiecrats aren't a thing now) and also see how multiple states list slavery as the reason for secession. My thoughts and prayers to all the friends and family of all the statues involved.
Did I literally just watch a man literally say “it’s an insurrection ONLY if they actually busted in, but because security was too good at their job they didn’t get in so THERE!”
Yep a poor defense
That's the Republican strategy now as too many bad things are happening from their party and it's supporters. It's become a "unless it was successful, it's fine" or "unless they specifically say that they're racist, they're not"
It wasn't an insurrection, it was a mostly peaceful protest.
By Republican logic standard, that is pretty reasonable. Compared to things like “I am a sitting President announcing weeks before the election that there is going to be massive election fraud (but only if I lose) and I will do nothing to prevent or prosecute anyone for it....and btw I am a great President who should be “re-instated” or “the VP can just keep a sitting President who lost an election in office...those shady Dems just never noticed before....apparently.”

@@mrmrmaples I don't see how you'd prevent people from organizing.
I agree 100% with ranked-choice voting (or, the *Borda count* as mathematicians properly call it).
But getting rid of the Electoral College would be utterly idiotic.
The solution, rather, is to have all 50 states do what Maine and Nebraska *already* do. Namely, 2 electoral votes to whoever wins that state's popular vote, and 1 each to the winner of each House district.
That way, instead of 9 or 10 "swing states" (out of 50), there would be 113 or 114 "swing Electoral votes" (out of 538), thus geographically *spreading out the voting power* .

It’s almost like… there should be more than two parties that have any power 🤔
You'd have to change the voting system to do that. Y'know, change it, using the current voting system.
As a Canadian, it doesn't help much in the modern era of politics. The NDP are the left wing party, we generate more votes nationally than any other party. Yet the Liberals and Conservative parties have dominated elections for decades. Both are right wing, Trudeau and the Liberals are perfect comparisons to Biden and Manchin. They sell the conservative policy through inaction or lame duck efforts on social policy, using the other party as a scapegoat. They geerrymandered the system perfectly so no matter who is in power, we keep moving right and more in bed with American corporations.
Just a fun fact, the Koch companies rule oil, gas, and green energy here. They are vital manufacturers of infrastructure components, and a major influence on why Alberta is Canada's Texas
Its called Duvergers law and theoretically the two parties are made of individuals who can be primaried.
Thats why you can have Sanders and Manchin both be democrats when NC is a red state. The people vote based on the senator and not entirely along party lines.
