    After my first phase of intensively watching Top10 Fragrance videos and having bought 60 perfumes in just under 2 years, I came to the conclusion that a more minimalistic approach to this hobby was a better choice for me. Since then I've been trying to keep my collection under 20 fragrances, preferably around 10. I often choose fragrances that are a good compromise between wearability and my personal enthusiasm for the fragrance. Scents like Herod, Ambre Nuit or Percival are the way to go for me. For more unusual, more specific scents, 5ml decants are usually enough for me. This principle saves me a lot of money and keeps the collection organized.

      @@turboshazed7370 Almost, except that I only have 5ml decants from some of my favorite fragrances (Amouage Beach Hut, Roja Oligarch, Creed Royal Oud). I find them more exciting than a Percival, for example, but experience has shown that in practice I use the Percival much more often. If I have ordered 5ml of a fragrance several times in a very short time, then I know that a bottle will be worth it. I own a

    I will respectfully give my take on “basic” perfumes. I wonder if so many of us who have gotten into this hobby and especially reviewers who have been exposed to hundreds of fragrances start to lose sight of the basic premise of perfumery. To smell good. When perfumes were created it was simply to smell good. I don’t think there is an insecurity in smelling appealing. That’s the point. If your hobby has evolved and now you simply crave a more artistic expression of perfumery that’s fine but I don’t think it has to come at the cost of disparaging the desire to simply smell good. It may not have to always be “deep”. It can be fun at a very “basic” level. Keep up the good work and content!

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  Год назад +4

      Thanks for watching, Bryce.
      As I mentioned several times throughout the video, there is nothing wrong with smelling good! It is the seeking of affirmation through fragrance as a crutch that I’m primarily speaking to. That is an issue beyond fragrance that I’ve focused on in other recent videos.
      I partially agree with you about the premise of perfumery. It started as a luxury of the elite class (often times to cover up their stench 😬). But it very quickly evolved into an art form. It is indisputable that perfumers, while being chemists, are also artists. They use artistic and creative sensibilities to interpret the request of a brand in conjunction with the world around them. That’s what I appreciate the most about perfumery, and that’s what I’m going to talk about on my channel.
      Concurrently, perfumery has also evolved into a major industry, which is where we see the rise of perfume for the masses. Art is not the priority.
      It is sad to me that the RUclips community at large puts a severance between a fragrance and the mind that made it possible.
      So while other reviewers will continue along the train of what fragrances can “do for us”, on my channel, I will maintain my approach of what we can do with our fragrances.
      Thanks again!

    • @brycebaker138
      @brycebaker138 Год назад +2

      @@stayfreshproductions I agree 100% Justin and I appreciate the thoughtful manner in which you choose to express your love for this art. I think the unfortunate by-product of RUclips and the rise in popularity with perfumery are these algorithms that dictate the best way to drive new subscriptions comes from a Top 10, compliment getting, panty dropping list. As they say “it’s what sells”. So again, I do appreciate you taking a different approach in order to expose your subscribers to a more artistic and sometimes under appreciated side of perfumery.

Like you said, that way of thinking is rooted in insecurity. Also, I'd say that a compliment-getting fragrance isn't necessarily a good one. Baccarat Rouge and Dior Sauvage are compliment getters but I refuse to wear them because they don't smell all that good to me. I wear fragrances for me, compliments are a bonus.

    I think it's incredibly vapid to wear scents to simply get compliments but at the same time, I wouldn't wear fragrance to the detriment of others, whether that be from an overly "artistic" scent profile or over-spraying. As social beings, we should care somewhat about how it is perceived by people around us. The factors I take into account with my fragrances is 1) do I love it (at least an 8/10, and I appreciate getting wafts of it throughout the day), 2) do the people around me that I care about enjoy it (ie if my girl hates a frag that I like, I'm probably not gonna keep it), 3) does it fill a niche that I don't have already filled, 4) does the performance match my use (ie a work frag should last 6-8 hrs). At the end of the day though, I think we agree that we should consume fragrance more intentionally.

Now, as of late, I have been giving away or selling a lot of my collection, especially the modern blue fragrances. I'm a bit older, but not too old LOL, and have been purchasing older vintage Style fragrances. Most in their modern reformulation. I find myself really enjoying the older fragrances. I might try a PDM frag now though just because i do need a fragrance that doesn't evaporate off my skin and clothes because it's regularly 95-100 degrees where i live. My 400m walk to work is so rough. I apply my fragrances on at work and only need them for three hours at a time. On the weekend, I'd like to have something to spray on the weekend and not reapply. Hi Justin, can you please suggest some strong, modern, very high class and luxurious as well as mass pleasing Vetiver based scent to be worn as a groom in a very expensive Indian wedding event. 😅 I didn't know where to ask you this question!

    I’m honestly surprised you haven’t done Y EDP for this series yet. It’s such a basic mass-appealing fragrance. Every time I go to the store I’m looking for something from the L’Homme line, but all stores have here is the Y line. Somehow it’s super mass appealing though and apparently women love it, but to me it’s the most boring fragrance lol.

    Just curious if you have same reaction to Layton - that it’s lazy? Like I love Layton myself so anyone else’s opinion (other than my better half) doesn’t matter. It makes me feel good; it’s sort of comforting and uplifting, so it’s a loud elixir. My girl finds it cozy. But I also understand it’s not exciting or original despite being well crafted.
    I do understand there is a fixation on complimented fragrances. It does make it hard to find new interesting scents unless the stars align and the people are hyping it. And then it’s also suspicious to me when influencers all start hyping fragrances at the same time after getting a free bottle. So you have to really dig to get exposed to things to sample.

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  Год назад

      While I don’t consider Layton to be an inspiring fragrance, I don’t consider it lazy and I do really enjoy it. SOP is lazy to me because it is essentially a luxury clone. I don’t have any respect for that.

      Good question! It’s not something I worry about too much. A regular wash will get most of it out most of the time, and when I spray something on top of it after that, the remnants of the old scent are virtually undetectable.
