- Penny Chenery, the 91-year-old owner of Secretariat, is interviewed by Jonathan Horowitz at her home in Boulder, Colorado, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown. In the interview, she reviews Secretariat's 31-length victory in the 1973 Belmont Stakes and provides commentary and perspective while watching the race won in a time that is still the world record for 1 1/2 miles on dirt. She reflects on her role as Secretariat's owner and discusses the opportunities available to women today at horse racing's highest level.

You are not the only one who gets choked up Penny. That Belmont Video always gets me. I remember watching his races live. But that Belmont race was something other worldly. I cried back then and, I just cried watching Secretariat just now. Secretariat's acheivement is the single best and most perfect athletic performance I ever saw in my lifetime, and to this day now 50 years later. nothing has ever topped it. We mere humans found out that Pegasus was real that day and his name was Secretariat, and God he was beautiful to watch.
But he was HER horse!!
Penny took on the “good ole boys” club with Big Red and he annihilated his competition. She was a strong woman in a man’s world.
A wonderful, lady who took over after her father's death & because of her faith in Secretariat, brought the world an icon that will be forever remembered & dearly beloved. We love you Penny!!
Sham was a great horse but became injured at the Belmont when he lost to Secretariat and never raced again. Penny's later years, she devoted her life to Secretariat's legacy. RIP, Penny Chenery. You owned the greatest race horse that ever lived.
Sham is a big part of the legendary moment. I think he helped Secretariat to set the records that he set. Watching an athlete compete on their own with no one else contesting them can be boring it's always great to see a familiar competition.
Agreed. Sham if born in another year may have been a Triple Crown winner.@@hollywoodpineapple8337
SECRETARIAT- he is the greatest of all time. To watch this race is to witness perfection, a rare thing indeed
"I can achieve anything I wanted to if I was willing to work hard enough". Words of wisdom for us all.
I've had the Honor of meeting Penny several times & I enjoy listening to her stories. She is an incredible woman that ALL females can look up to, with pride. I was bitten by the "Horse Bug" when I was 1 1/2 years old, & I still have it at the age of 55 !! Thank You, Penny and Big Red :) I LOVE YOU !!
MyBigRed94 you are so lucky! i don't miss a word she says. a true inspiration!
I watch the his Belmont Stakes when I need s lift too. Amazing every time. Loved watching his daughter, Lady’s Secret, win all her races too!
Wow! He was an amazing horse that had a heart larger then life. Penny was Blessed with Big Red and it was a perfect match! God Bless her and Secretariet, RIP
Well Penny, you had a horse that will always be loved and so will you. Majestic Big Red..a true Hero and Winner. The best of all time. btw, you are a beautiful woman.
A HUGE THANK YOU TO Ms . Chenery and her staff for all the love and decisions they made that gave the whole world this incredible Horse . The joy they and Secretariat gave us was unmeasurable ❣️🥰👏🏻
I've been a horse person all my life, I love Secretariat, Big Red, The Greatest Horse of our times with the biggest heart. Penny Chenery, you really did it, we all admire you greatly. You were so lucky to have that wonderful experience and to owned and loved Secretariat.
Penny was very lucky to get that colt! He was supposed to be a loser, but he turned out to be a one-off, the most outstanding horse in racing history! The combo of breeding/owner/trainer/groom/jockey made Sec what he was, plus Sec's own huge personality! OH!, plus his majorly over-sized heart! I do believe his larger-than-life heart gave him an unfair advantage, but that could only have worked for him with all the love and encouragement he had been given by everyone involved with him. He was definitely a one-off horse!
Ross Munn yes, i think that love had everything to do with it. Big Red was lucky to have Penny as a owner!
I had a horse when I was 7 his name was Sparkle
I hate Penny Chenery
@@chriscolfersgirlfriend3bri220 We don’t care what you think asshole!
God I was 24 when Secretariat won the Belmont. My mother loved that horse. I was in the army and was home on leave and watched the race with her and my dad and she was crying as he won. He is without a doubt the greatest race horse that ever lived.
I was 17....me and my daddy watched all 3 legs of the Triple Crown together....we were horse fans, I cried and daddy kept clapping and screaming!!!
Yes he is!!
Amazing moment in time! I was a boy and remember the day this happened! RIP Penny. RIP Big Red.
"Secretariat was a ham" cracks me up every time.
Penny is a strong woman with a big heart, but so was Secretariat!!! God Bless you both, alot of smarts between you both♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Secretariat was and is to this day the greatest race horse of all time. His race time for each of the races of the Triple Crown will most likely never be broken. I was privileged to see this magnificent horse run and win at Arlington Park several months after winning the Belmont. I will never forget this experience as long as I live.
Elyse Mach Perhaps YOU can tell me why Secretariat quit racing so soon after all his amazing wins. Was there a race to begin having him cover mares for huge fees?
@@christinestill1990 He was probably at his peak at that point. Some people want to go out on a high note instead of keep going until their become a former shell of themselves. It might be the same for the horse. Let him go out unbeaten rather than his final race being a loss it was a win on turf.
this horse is a Legend.
the horse and the owner are legends :-)
So moved by all , I was so lucky to find secretariats grandaughter , by synatariat one of his sons .we will be breeding early next year with storm cats great grandson Cmon tiger. God bless you penny . You left us some awesome memories . I can only say thank you
Both listening to Penny and watching the "Big Guy" run, brings a tear still. She was a marvelous owner and class act. There's no words to describe the Big Guy! The stuff that dreams are made of.
What an absolute blessing for both Penny & Secretariat..
Penney Chennery I grew up in lynnfield ,ma.I'm 59 yrs old and I was a great exercise rider and their was no cable tv .I watched Secretariat all three races of the triple crown and the Belmont ,Stakes is the longest distance and it was unbelievable when the gate opened he went to the lead ,Secretariat always came from the back .Barry shulman.
What a fantastic horse, owner and interview!
Penny C also had the heart of a Champion, as Did Ron T and L Lauren. Let us not forget the Stable man and also the Secretary and their participation. They rolls carried strength in the heart of Secretariat.
Absolutely the greatest 2.24 minutes in history!
I worked for an awning company in Cincinnati and we went to Claiborne Farm and set up tents for Ms Penny for the Kentucky derby! The princess of England visited her that weekend! It was a great experience getting to visit that beautiful place!!! Oh yes, I also won a $100
00 on Secretariat that weekend!! I'm 72 now and still remember it very well!!!
THE ESPN documentary is still the most emotional documentary I've ever seen . I've watched it a 100 times & still can't watch without a tear running down my face. One commentator said " ON THAT DAY ( BELMONT 1973 ) I SAW PEGASUS.
EDJ1845 yep, me too...
I love thst one too and the quote
@@chriscolfersgirlfriend3bri220 what a hateful remark but she passed away a few years ago. Must be awful to have hate for someone you probably didnt even know. Wow
@@chriscolfersgirlfriend3bri220 i feel sorry for you with such a black heart. How sad
Such an amazing women and story!!
R.I.P Penny Chenery, You were the woman to save Meadow Stables.
Penny opened doors for other women in horse racing. And SECREtARIAT was with her all the way. Happy Anniversary to Penny secretariat and Happy Birthday to Eddie Sweat. ❤❤❤❤❤
I visited Secretariat at Claiborne Farm in the 70's. All the people at Claiborne were so friendly and allowed us to spend so much time there. Big Red was really a star and he knew it too!. I fed him peppermints and petted him and he ran around in his paddock. He was a magnificent looking horse, just perfect. Loved his personality. An unforgettable day. I even got chased by an angry mother swan. But that's another story!
40 years and we can still remember that race. I watched it on a Black and white TV. I was 15 years old. Even then I knew what a race it was. I don't know how true to life the movie was, but so glad you didn't give up when the odds were not good. Now days I check the pedigrees and always hope it will be one of Secretariat's offspring that wins.
Historical Note: Big Red also ran 1.5 miles on grass in 2:24:08 in the Man O' War Stakes ( NCR).
It makes me sad that her parents didn't live to see the fruit of all their labors fulfill the ultimate dream of owners, breeders and trainers.
God bless Miss Penny who I've always regarded as the "First Lady of Racing".
Strapper Nick Ms. Penny...
I hate Penny Chenery
@@chriscolfersgirlfriend3bri220 why are you watching a video of her then?
I hate her because she is the owner of Secretariat
ChrisColfer'sgirlfriend:3 Bri stupid comment just to get attention! You may be jealous but “hate” is over-doing it: that’s you account, some guy’s g.f. ??
It took a great horse like sham to show a great horse like secretariat " if you don't win this race , I will "
Well said! Sham was a gallant horse, and probably would have been the Triple Crown winner. But,it went to the greatest horse of all time!
big red was on many magazine covers back then he was a superstar
Ron Turcotte often stated that all he ever had to do was talk to Secretariat and show him the whip but rarely used it on him. "The greatest horse I ever rode" is what Ron has stated many times also. Secretariat's exercise rider, Charlie Davis, said that riding him was like riding on a highly over-powered motorcycle.
Ronnie also said that "he was just along for the ride"
Beautiful big Red Rone and amazing woman. Love the movie and when he's coming around the last corner of Belmont Stakes and they sing Oh Happy Day a great old hymn I cry. That horse loved her and ran like the wind.
I was in Okinawa (U.S. Army) when he won the Triple Crown. Our day room (with one TV) was half full at Kentucky Derby day. It was packed at Preakness day. Our CO brought in a bigger TV and placed it in our dining hall for the Belmont (breakfast was served earlier than usual so the hall can be emptied and filled with chairs) - it was standing room only. Halfway through the Belmont, the hall was rocking and shook like an earthquake, everybody were screaming. I'll never forget that day..everyone were hi-fiving and hugging everyone - for one moment that day, he brought us all together as proud Americans and as one. Big Red - best that ever was, best that ever will be//
I love your story! How wonderful to have memories like that!
Two great things happened on June 9th. One in 1973 and one in 2013. Nathan Sykes from The Wanted a boy band that saved my life came back from a career threatening surgery on his vocal cords that had a nodule. Very scared since he loved to sing and it was his life. He came back on stage to sing his glorious I Found You solo in front of 80,000 people! I couldn't help but notice how great these two events were, maybe not to you for the boy. But I was so happy and crying cheers of joy I said "THANK YOU SECRETARIAT!!!" Secretariat has been a big part in my racing career. He's my inspiration and it's funny how I surprise everyone when I come from behind to win. I'm proud to say that I'm a champion, without Secretariat for my inspiration and for The Wanted as my strength through all the hard times, I wouldn't be where I am today!
Thank You Penny for having the insight and belief in Big Red to give us that History of Secretariat!
Lovely Lady, ms. Penny, a true inspiration
I loved this interview! Thank you. You can really tell how much Penny Chenery loved Big Red! 😍
This is nice, she articulates the experience in ways I've not heard before, her thoughts and feelings.
bon1042 that's why i watch and listen to anything Penny says!
It’s so sweet when she says she is daddy’s girl and what her dad does she likes.
Several years ago there was debate over which athletes should be on the list for the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th century. One day, while watching a show on ESPN, the host were debating whether or not Secretariat should be on this list. At the time, my only knowledge of Secretariat was name and winning the triple crown, I knew nothing more. And my opinion regarding whether or not Secretariat should be on the top 100 list was not favorable for Secretariat. That was until I watched the movie Secretariat. After the movie I watched the three races on RUclips. Needless to say, my opinion was changed. Secretariat may have been nothing more than a horse, but he was an animal God touched in a way only God can.
Agree. .arguably the best athlete ever.
maureen buchser This is correct. He was a magnificent specimen.
***** Amen!
To quote the film, he isn't a horse, he's Secretariat!
"Best Athlete ever?" YES I agree! and there is no argument period.
what a wonderful thing that this was preserved for all to see! I remember it.
Thank you Penny, you and Secretariat are in heaven..❤❤❤
Penney was such a Great Owner and Beloved Person it complimented the story and life of Secretariat to make it perfect !! What an amazing Lady !!
I get chills every time I watch this
The horse was legendary the woman a strong woman at a time it was not fashionable to be who took on the good ole boys and beat them soundly despite all odds while raising a family my favorite story
Terri Storms oh yes! in the 70s a woman owner? in that field? or any other field for that matter. God touched the whole crew!
Don't believe the Disney movie. She was having an affair with her trainer, and divorced her husband the same year Secretariat won the Triple Crown. She was successful only because she got extremely lucky and got a one in a million horse. Not a good model for a wife or mother.
@@ragtimegal7416 were you there, or just spreading gossip? Seems like someone's always got something negative to say. Proof of your statement is hard to hold up in a court of law. Besides, there is a video on yt where her children were honoring her. Seems like they all loved their mother. Besides, he was way shorter than her and much older. Shame on you for saying something so disrespectful. Penny and Secretariat are part of our nation's history. Both were forerunners of our time.
Why do i always cry when i see the greatest racehorse of alltime
I still cry when I see God's perfection in that horse!!!
Love you Penny! ❤ Secretariat was who he was because of you
I tear up every time I watch The Belmont. Greatest horse 🐎 ever, maybe one of the greatest athletes ever!
I’m tearing up now!
I cry every time I think of Secratariet because I have is great grandaughter, He very amazing. I'm so sad he had to be put down.
Laminitis will do that to a horse. Horrible disease.
I watched the three races in 1973 and have to say, that Secretariat with the numbers he put up, is the greatest race horse in the world. There may have been some with more wins, but in all honesty when it comes down to the numbers, they don't lie. I had the privilege, to have spoken with Mrs. Tweedy in 1988, prior to Secretariat passing in 1989. Very awesome Lady.
Secretariat is the greatest of all time, and still holds the track record in all three Triple Crown races! Rip to Secretariat and Ms. Penny.
Best horse of all times
2023...... 50th anniversary of his triple crown win. RIP Secretariat!!! 🐴 🏆❤
no greater horse ! the owner was a true winner as well.
There is quite simply a plethora of Great race horses that go back 140 years. However, as a historian and horse racing enthusiast there's really Only ONE (1!) that stands tall above the rest.....The Legendary Secretariat⚡️
Love ‘Big Red’ forever!
What a wonderful lady
Amazing horse. Amazing woman. .♥♥♥
Go watch kelso at the dc international of 1964 how he did 2:23 4/5 for 1 mile and, a half on grass and, that was on 3 tight turns which are much harder than the 2 huge sweeping turns secretariat had at bemont on that fast track running right by the rail from the beginning. Once sham broke down the other two horses were bums, one had lost 20 out of 23 races and, the other one, can you name him? Look at the competition kelso had in that race. Some of the best horses in the world and, he did the last quarter faster than the first quarter considering he had to slow down for each of those 3 tight turns!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kelso beat more champions, more international champions, more hall of famers than any other race horse of all-times, that alone makes him one hell of a candidate for greatest of all-times. Never mind all the crazy things he inky did like only 3 horses ever won the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup in the same year, kelso is the only horse to pull that stunt twice!!!!!!!!!!!! Kelso also hold s the 3 fastest timings fot the 2 maile jockey gold cup breaking the record 2 times on sloppy tracks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Secretariat never broke a record on a sloppy track neither did kelsos' great grand father man of war. Kelso did it at 3 and, unbelievably than did it at 7 and, just 11 days after his last jockey gold cup on dirt he breaks the record on grass for 1 mile and a half the dc international on 3 very hard tight turns!!!!! Kelso also beat 5 horses that had won triple crown races, 12 times in his carear!!!!!!!!!!!! Only 4 horses ever won the handicap triple crown which is even harder than the regular one cause they gotta carry more weight in each of the 3 races and run againts horses of all ages. Kelso is the only one of the 4 to ever win that, to win carrying over 130 pounds in each of the 3 races, as much as 136 in one and, giving away 20 pounds to the runner up!!!!!!!!!!!! The year he won the handicap triple crown he became the only horse ever to win the handicap triple crown, the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup the same year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not even close, kelso was and, in a class all by himself, you must not know much about 'KING KELLY' alias the great KELSO. Go look up kelso and, make sure you're sitting down. Oh and, he only weighed 900 pounds and, looked like a deer and, was still carrying all that weight and beating more great horses than any racehorse of all-times! 'ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A HORSE NAMED KELSO BUT, ONLY ONCE'.KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.
maureen buchser I absolutely adore horses but I'm terrified of them. I'm truly in love with Secretariat and his story. I tried but I could not conquer my fear of them. Sad for me.
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS, Jonathan H!
Penny and Big Red, meant to be together. It was magic!
That was one SMART, classy woman!
She gave a wonderful description of the race.
3 monstros, 3 máquinas , 3 lendas. Secretariat, Penny e Ronnie.
"He's going up to engage...what's his name?"...that pretty much says it all...what a horse...a true Superhorse.
i had the honer of sitting down with Penny Chenery at the KY horse park at bryer fest back in the vary early 90es. she was a vary nice down to earth person real people.
I only met a horse once. I drove by a fenced pasture with about 6 horses grazing. I stopped and went to the fence and whistled and only 1 picked its head up to look at me.
I did this a few times, the same horse got closer to me each time. Finally about 15 ft away I just reached out my arm and it walked over and let me pet him/her I didn't ck. I thought wow, this horse went out of its way just to do me a favor. That's how I learned horses are special.

Great video
Goat. Greatest of all time
this horse is a Legend. Thank you Penny....after all these years we are still mystified ...
Secretariat was a king!!!
God Bless you Mam. What a treasure you are
loved to run. super horse. unmatched in beauty and spirit. what an athlete. just look at him in his paddock !
I saw Secretariat race... I've never seen a horse like him in the last 45+ yrs
I wish i could have met her!
The most magnificent athlete this country has ever had. Also the best looking and with the best personality.
The greatest horse ran the greatest race of all time. I get choked up every time I watch this race.
Anyone else reminded of another bright chestnut colt with white markings, another beloved 'family' horse-racehorse who is also a ham? Do we hear the hoofbeats of history in the near distance ahead...?
A woman had the best race horse in the history of horse racing. Fantastic!!
LOVE YOU PENNY! even though i barely know u and have only hugged you about 10 times i still love u soo much!
I love this lady. She is a real deal sweetheart.
I would love to hear everybody's explanation of why that race moved them to tears. I remember watching the movie Secretariat and when Penny yelled "Let him run Ronnie" I absolutely broke down, and to this day I don't really understand why that line hit me so hard.
Penney Chennery I grew up in lynnfield ,ma.I'm 59 yrs old and I was a great exercise rider and their was no cable tv .I watched Secretariat all three races of the triple crown and the Belmont ,Stakes is the longest distance and it was unbelievable when the gate opened he went to the lead ,Secretariat always came from the back .Barry shulman..
What a wonderful woman who enhanced a wonderful horse and our experience with them❤️
Secretariat / "Big Red." The greatest athlete of all time. Penny Chenery, .... the greatest owner affiliated with sports of all time. Sorry, Red Auerbach, Vince Lombardi, and Bill Belichick fans (and I am an AVID FAN of all 3 of them!) ... but none of you had to gamble your personal financial future on your teams .....
Doug Griggs well said...
The most beautiful perfect tremendous machine!
My right ear enjoyed this video.
Please...your faith in this horse was monumental! He is one of the greatest horses on earth!
Great horse, great woman.
I watched a show about the vet who did a necropsy on Secretatiat...his heart weighed 22 pounds. The average weight of a thoroughbred is 8.5 pounds! Sham's heart weighed 19 pounds. Both of these horses were genetic anomalies, in a great way. They were racing machines and lots ved every minute of it. God bless them.❤😮
"He's moving like a tremendous machine".... no words more prolific.
Mike R., Big Red had a abscess in his mouth when Onion took first place, Red had a fever that was undetected at the start of the race that Onion won. "Red" is the best.
Then that was another abscess. He lost the Wood Memorial also because of an abscess. Angle Light won that.
Everyone around this horse "gets it".
We, humans, were the junior partner in the relationship.
It was The Horse who ran the show.
That this fellow mammal should command such respect, half a century later, tells you how extraordinary he was.
That horse was bulldozing. I'm so glad to have witnessed Secretariat
The GOAT..... God of all thoroughbred
REST IN PEACE MS. PENNY.
