  • Secretariat's epic performance at Belmont Park June 9, 1973 with Chic Anderson's historic call.
Experience the beauty, power, and majesty of this phenomenal 3 yr old American thoroughbred, the legendary Secretariat, as he delivers his definitive performance!
You will not likely experience another similarly inspirational performance of overwhelming ability and domination in your lifetime!
Led out quickly by his season rival Sham over the first few furlongs, a majestic Secretariat then simply shifts gears on the back stretch, runs away from the field, finishes with the still-standing world record of 02:24:00 for 12 furlongs on a dirt surface, and emphatically captures the Belmont "Test of the Champion" Stakes race. Secretariat punctuated the 1973 American Triple Crown with this once-in-a-lifetime performance in front of an astonished and incredulous Belmont crowd!
Healthy Secretariat + excellent track conditions
+ early pacing by Sham = Epic Secretariat World Record!

Arguably the greatest individual performance by any athlete, in any sport, in the history of mankind. Although overshadowed by the race itself, Chic Anderson's call of the race was probably the greatest in horse racing history. When faced with the daunting task of trying to describe something that simply defied words alone, Chic nailed it... "He is moving like a tremendous machine.". Even the most casual racing fan instantly knows where that statement comes from.

When all the other horses, who were good enough to get to Belmont, were dropping from exhaustion that big red horse just went faster and faster. I am amazed to have recently learned that horses who choose to run and win, are rarely allowed to run full throttle for fear of breakdown, like Ruffian. Trainers want the horses to run fast enough to win but not put themselves in jeopardy. I am so grateful that on this day Big Red was allowed to run and that we are lucky enough to have video to prove it happened! This country was very sad that summer. Tired from war in Asia, tired of politics at home. Red made us cheer and hug one another and just plain be happy to have seen his miracles that year. Thank you, Red and all your people who made it happen. God Bless.

The greatest racehorse of all time without question. Fastest times ever for all three triple crown events. MOW was not as fast, not even close. MOW ran a record mile time of 1:38 3/5 at Preakness while Secretariat ran the mile in 1:34 1/5 at the Belmont and he actually got faster in the last 1/2 mile in winning the race in 2:24. No horse has even approached that time before or after. Even more amazing it that Secretariat always ran from last because he feared being kicked again at the gate. How fast would he have been running from the front. He actually had great competition in Sham who we would be talking about if not for Secretariat. Check out his times in the first two legs of the triple crown. He ran a sub two minute race in the Derby. He broke down in the Belmont trying to keep up with Secretariat. Racing expert Charles Hatton said it best about Secretariat that "his only point of reference is himself". We will never see another of his kind.

I’ve read the same about the other trainers’ logic. But I don’t understand it. Do you? Because the horses that Place & Show (aka finish 2nd & 3rd) still earn money, right? So doesn’t that make it worthwhile to enter your horse, even if you feel certain it won’t win the particular race? Especially if it’s a very prestigious race?

Watch the people's hands clapping and pummeling the air as Big Red gets close to the finish line. Then multiply that by about 20 million as you picture all of America doing the same thing in their living rooms across the continent, all at the same time on 9 June 1973. I was 15 and had become a horse racing enthusiast just the year before, and Secretariat cemented my love of the sport.. all these 48 years later. I heard how so many fans at Belmont Park that day didn't bother to cash their tickets on the 1-5 favorite after the race. Who needed a 40 cent profit on a $2 wager anyhow? Rather, they framed them. Brilliant move.

The line that hits me is "He's out there almost a sixteenth of a mile away from the rest of the horses!" Mere lengths didn't do justice to the magnitude of this victory.
A few years ago, the folks at Belmont put a pole 31 lengths from the finish and painted it in blue-and-white checkers. A nice tribute to the greatest racehorse of them all. And Chic Anderson was right; that pole is just a few feet from the sixteenth pole.

I want to point out something to all the " Man O War" fans out there. I read that MOW ran on tracks that were sub-standard due to the lack of modern track maintenance. The jockeys were a bit heavier, and he wore heavier horseshoes. But they forget that Secretariat ran on a hot day - and not only ran faster as he went, but he wasn't pushed to go fast, and he never broke a sweat. The World will never know how fast Secretariat was because we never saw him really do his best. But I will bet MOW would have pushed red to do better, but Secretariat would have definitely won. Just imagine running that distance and not getting hot or winded in 90 degree heat. He could have ran much faster.

@@frasierthebichon7422 yes there was some sweat as you would expect to see some, it was a 90° day you would think you would see a pretty good lather on Secretariat’s neck and shoulders or at least when they pulled off the saddle, in the extended coverage I couldn’t see any lather and other people noticed the same thing. Maybe it was wiped away that you don’t see happen or maybe the film quality isn’t good enough to see it I don’t know but lather isn’t noticed to me and others, there’s no good shot of under the girth strap

You miss the point about his greatness and why he stands above the rest. It's not just his speed and stamina, it was his physical beauty, his charisma and what now has become his mythical status. He broke a 25 year drought at a time when America was going through several bad years of Watergate, Viet Nam, etc. Records are one thing, however, his iconic status will never be approached again. Add me to the ' annoying " fans. BTW, I had the chance to pet him when he was a yearling.
