In this one Aynsley is playing his signature Rift Amp throughout. If you haven't seen the earlier episode with the 59 and 57 then check out this video first - ruclips.net/video/pR2T4YccAOs/видео.html where I compare them to my R9 as well. Thanks Clive for bringing these beauties along. Cheers!
Thanks James & Aynsley & Clive. These videos are pure ear joy. Through youtube and my headphones I prefered the Goldtop's woody tone, but if I had to take the 59 I could live with it. Lol
On my part you are welcome! I can say this because i haven’t been playing in these videos… i love these recordings of Aynsley playing! Yeah the 59 is no slouch - i mean it is everything I hoped it would be - but the goldtop is very very special! Cheers
Visiting these like this has me jonesing for a Les Paul (an historic custom shop, cuz the OGs are outta my price range), James. I've been almost solely a Fender guy (Strats with a couple teles) and as a lefty player my choices for Les Pauls have been...less than spectacular (bought and sold quite a few in the past 4 years). But NOTHING sounds like one (you could say the same for a Strat and Tele). So amazing to hear the differences and have you discuss these details! Kudos as always!!!!
Trust me, it has me jonesing for a goldtop to go next to my r9! I'm glad you've been enjoying it :) yeah, I am not sure if I am mainly a Fender guy or Gibson, because a great example of any - Strat, Tele, Les Paul, 335, SG etc - has me falling in love all over again! Ah, yeah, lefty choices must be pretty narrow - that is a shame!! cheers
'57 PAF's and '59 PAF's, may be from "the same era," but they are vastly different pickups. Though it was a very short time between those years, the materials that went into both, the magnet wire and the steels, had changed quite a bit. Also you're ignoring that the finishes on both are also way different types. You've got a thin nitrocellulose sunburst finish on the '59 versus a METALLIC PAINT on the goldtop. The unplugged sound of both should be noticeably darker on the gold top. Also, the '59 PAF's are pretty much a deteriorated physical design, FAR different from the gold top, because of really incredibly sloppy manufacuring methods used in those times. Very few if any really know about this, but I put a good 20 years into an actually science-based reverse engineering project that looked at literally everything about them, from the first ones to the very last ones. This included very deep metallurgical analyses of real vintage steel from the entire range of years PAF's were manufactured, and a broader range of years of vintage magnet wire samples that pretty much covered a 40 year time span. I wrote an article for Burst Believers II about the bare bones information that few pickup companies and amateur hobbyists even know about. I offered free PAF restorations and authentication for all those years, so I got to see, dissect, and play them from every year. On my channel I demo''d many vintage PAF's vs. my technical replicated models, made from all this knowledge gained from all the years of research. PAF's, are way more complex than anyone knows. One thing to note is that once you remove a vintage PAF from the original guitars, they sound different. The sound of those guitars is not just pickups. Me and some partners established "Four Uncles Restorations" for a two year project to make a 100% accurate ABR1 replica, that is now in limited production, no mass production. This piece of hardware has a big effect in achieving a vintage Les Paul sound, as any of you who own good condition bridges already know. The other things is the harness is very important and no company I know of does them right. Included is the light weight alumnum tailpieces, the BRASS thumbwheels and BRASS bridge posts, combined with the ABR1. And of course the WOOD used in them doesn't really exist anymore. Its a whole package and pretty much a completely intact vintage Les Paul is extremely difficult to build right, but there ARE several talented builders who come very close, as well as my own contribution in recreating the vintage PAF's, and on my channel you can see many vintage PAF's being directly compared to my work.
Ive watched this episode around 10 times comparing my goldtop...NOT BC ITS MINE BUT, i have a friend named Dave Stephens from SD pickups, he was the 1st guy to venture into the PAF game...He put his whole life into it..A straight up genius! Maybe you heard of him...Anyway, we made friends, i recently started writing songs for a blues record, and fortunately, i got lucky and got a label interested..My point is i reached out to him for tonal help, bc i did my research and hes a legend, i bought every PAF clone out there...Tried to order a set from him, but they wouldnt be ready in the time i have to finish the record...He had an older proto/type set around and sent them to me...There equivalent to the best true PAFS i ever heard, i wrote 5 songs the week i recieved them, gave me a ton of inspiration...I was gonna start a channel and have him on as my 1st guess, but a got an obligation to finish my record. Hes a shy guy, was a bit reluctant, but eventually said he may do it...My point is you should look him up on youtube, hed be a good interveiw, if hell do it..Very interesting guy, and a genius...I like your channel, he became like an adviser to me, and you seem like a respectful guy...If you dont do anything but check out his work? itll be worth it...Im as much as a tone chaser as you, i know youll concur, with him being the best! cheers...Love your work, even better then the steaks lol they look great though!
What a wonderful dilemma to actually be in a position to afford one of these two exceptional guitars. Your enthusiasm for the experience of hearing them in your own room is infectious. Great stuff. :-)
Haha well had I not bought most of this gear I have, perhaps I might have been in that position 🤔 but then I wouldn’t be me 🤣 thanks Rich - this was really something to remember 👌🏽
Another great video, James. If you sold all your other gear, you would be well on your way to the goldtop. So maybe the real question is, all your current gear, or the goldtop into a Roland Cube 🤣
I JUST REALIZED LISTENING WITH HEADPHONES, HOW MUCH THE POTS HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE VINTAGE LP TONE, WHEN HE WAS WAS PLAYING WITH THE CONTROLS YOU CAN HERE THEM SIZZLE AND CUT OUT, WHICH, TO ME, IS A BIG PART OF THE PAF BURST SOUND......ITS ALMOST LIKE THERE FIGHT ING TO STAY ALIVE...AND SOUND/AMPLIFICATION WAS STILL AT ITS INFANCY STAGES BACK THEN, SO IM THINKING EVEN WHEN THEY WEE NEW, 60 PLUS YEARS AGO THE POTS/WIRING HAD A TENDENCY TO FIGHT TO GET THE SOUND THROUGH WHICH GAVE IT THAT BODY IN THE TONE......BECAUSE, IF I HAD TO PUT INTO WORDS? WHAT IT IS ABOUT THAT SOUND THAT I LOVE? ITS THE CLARITY OF COURSE, BUT MORE SO ITS THAT WAVEY IN AND OUT EFFECT THESE GUITARS HAVE, LIKE THE HUMAN VOICE OF SOUL SINGERS HOW EACH NOTE IS PLAYED WITH AND BENT, AND HOW THE DISTORTION OF THAT SINGING STYLE GIVES IT ITS CHARM......ITS AMAZING HOW THEY WERE ABLE TO CAPTURE THAT EFFECT, UNKNOWINGLY, IN THESE GUITARS, JUST PERFECTLY, IMPERFECT!
People say a great Les Paul is a Tele on steroids? LP’s are their own thing; Being a Gibson fan I’ll call a Tele an anaemic LP😂. I think the 57 does it for me and it would be cheaper, mind you Aynsley would make most guitars sound great.
I can’t choose… aesthetics would be my choice… speaking of dreaming or living the dream I’ve added a CRS to my TS1 order considering the lead time ordering! Cheers
ITS AMAZING HOW? This kid is so good, with so much talent! And i never heard of him till i saw this! And some idiot with gold teeth who cant sing, is making millions! I think Ainsley has the best touch and feel of any blues guitarist out there! Your gonna be a beast with this guy teaching you, I told you before i think your better then you think! You have a passion and i heard it in your playing! And passion trumps everything bc it comes from the soul! Im looking forward to watching you get better! Neither of you are ever gonna be as nice then me, but thats besides the point! hahahaha jk! GOOD STUFF!

I promise to clean the pots next time !!
‘Next time’… ah, Clive, let’s hope you aren’t a tease 😃👌🏽cheers
Thanks for bringing these beauties to us Clive. Top bloke.
Thanks for sharing these incredible instruments with us all

Such a pleasure to listen to. Thank you!

What an experience man. Awesome! That 59 neck really sounds phenomenal
Only a few hundred 59s ever made and yet there's a new nearly mint condition one popping up every day! What a miracle.
Both are incredible. But man that 57 has that "Tele on steroids" sound.
Great way to put it! 🤟🏼
The first segment of the '57.... What a sound.
What kind of amp and overdrive are you using? Sounds great.

Wish this had been a little brighter lighted. But tones are fabulastic.
Try a Heritage H-150 custom shop, I wonder how it stacks up against those.
Which one was more resonant?

😃🤟🏼 awesome! Gonna be a painful wait, but so worth it!
now i like the goldtop! lol

I FEEL BAD FOR YOU! IT MUST BE HARD LETTING THEM GO! ID BE PHYSICAALY SICK!
11:06 dirty boy!
Haha! 😈
oooooo
Great playing and sweet guitars. But in all honesty, I’ve heard Historic Les Pauls that sound significantly better.
