Just the perfect mix between player, instrument and amp! Off the charts good!
thanks!
Fantastic! And I completely agree with your comments about a "thick tele" sound clean, just perfect!
thanks Greg! Appreciate you watching.
Dude talking: chill af
Dude playing: 🤯🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ha, thanks so much! Appreciate the support
Seriously great playing and tasteful little bits
The playing, the tone. One word. WOW
Think how much the world has changed since that guitar was made, it's like an unchanging part of history, beautiful, sounds stunning and will continue to appreciate in value too. I could only dream of seeing one up close.
It was a real treat to play it and spend some time. I wish I owned it. Thanks for watching.
He said it perfect.. Euphoric i close my eyes and u hear it
Absolutely! That bust is amazing
Had this recommended... I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for tuning in! Special guitar for sure. Welcome to the channel, more to come!
RUclips finally recommended a good video to somebody!
It’s a great yet ultimately futile thing: Trying to describe the experience of a great vintage guitar that 99.9999 percent of us will never see in the real world, let alone touch or play, is like… with all due respect, like trying to describe the Sistine Chapel and the trove of treasures in it to someone who has always been blind, and will never get there to experience it in any way.
Any yet we watch anyway, trying glean a little bit more of info or another perspective to affirm what we already have heard, and yet for all the great and well-intentioned efforts, and no matter how many videos we watch, not any of us are ever actually closer to the experience but the reviewer, themselves.
Such is life.
Thank you for a great watch and coverage.
Forget guitars and amplifiers, your playing is good. Well recorded, too.
thanks so much! Appreciate you watching
Superb demo showing the true range of the guitar. And wow does that really scream cranked!
Thanks for watching! That guitar is magical. Appreciate the comment
Awesome '59 sound and playing. Really nice - thanks !
thanks so much! Appreciate you watching
Instrument of a thousand voices and you made them all sing 👏👏
thanks so much! Man I love that guitar. Wish it was mine
I'm seeing this video super late obviously, but my god... I'm obsessed with Les Pauls - I play them and watch videos about them and listen to them literally every chance I get - and I can honestly say I think that is the best-sounding burst I have ever heard in my life. I know tone is also in the hands and your playing is incredible, but you can just hear every note so clearly. As you said, there's so much "air" around each note, it's incredible. And that taper! I'm not kidding, this is one of the best demos of a 59 I've ever heard. That guitar just so alive, you can practically hear it breathing. I have some great reissues, but nothing comes close to that. I think this video helped me finally "get" why everyone is so crazy about 59 bursts.
Thanks so much! Glad you found the video. That guitar is sooooo special, tone for days. So blessed to be able to have spent some time with it. True experience. Thanks for the support here
The tone is most certainly inspiring the awesome playing
thanks so much!
That was insane. I think that demonstration really showed why they’re such valued guitars. I’ve seen other videos of people playing original bursts, but they play in a way that doesn’t show how dynamic the guitar is.
The way you played almost gave a fear like feeling with as the volume knob went higher and higher, until the sound became powerful, but still crisp, like a crack of lightning.
The range is really amazing, when you first started playing I definitely heard the telecaster type twangy sound, but when pushed further it develops a really unique powerful, but still balanced sound.
Can definitely see why these became associated as hard rock machines, and why Slash wanted one so bad he got a replica.
With as strong as a tone that you got, it’s hard to imagine that guys back in the day felt they needed to take the pickup covers off for even more drive… it doesn’t seem like it would be necessary at all, although it sounds like it was because amps were weaker back then? Not sure.
Thanks so much! Not easy to capture it in a video but we gave it our best shot. Much better to hear it in the room.
that kossoff les paul was also owned by clapton before kossoff.
oh wow, did't know. The tech didn't tell me too much info on it. Thanks for watching!
There's lots of pictures of him using it with blind faith
Now THAT is how to show off this fantastic guitar - good man yourself !
thanks so much! Love that guitar
Very well done finally someone who knows what a 59 sounds like! Also great playing
Thanks Peter! I'm happy it comes across. Amazing guitar for sure.
You are right about the tele sounds with the volume down, but when you turn it up, it sure doesn't sound like a tele anymore. Great playing, and an awesome sounding Les Paul. Thanks for sharing!!
I had to come back and watch this again. The pickups in that burst are incredible. I had dreams about them last night. Ha! I got a new R9 in October 2018 and I have to say the new Custombuckers come about as close to real PAFs as anything Gibson has made in the last 50 years but there’s still nothing like the real thing. I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s thinking humbuckers were supposed to sound “thick” and muddy but that’s SO wrong! The best ones have that single coil clarity that you’re talking about. You can really hear the definition of each note, especially in the wound strings. Great video my man! 🎶
thanks! I thought the same many years ago too. Blew me away playing this thing. Real eye opener. I gotta try some custom buckers now. Thanks for watching and sweet dreams, ha. It did the same to me as well as trainwreck amps. Couldn't sleep for weeks
I recently bought a 2018 True Historic R9 that has that same neck you described here.
It has a ultra soft V shape almost undetectable but there. I love it and found out it was digitally
copied from a 59' burst known as "Carmelita". It is a great feeling neck.
Oh cool! Great to hear that. I love that shape too, glad its out there to buy. Wish I could afford a real burst but I'm doing fine with my historics too. Thanks for saying hello
Thank you for mentioning how it sounds like a telecaster. I kept telling people how similar les pauls sound to telecasters and they don't believe me. Just close your eyes and open your ears. Nice playing man!
thanks man! For sure they are and here's the proof. Ha. Thanks for watching
@@MOBontv of course man. Great video! You are very lucky. One more thing real quick though. Why do you think that the Danger Burst is so light? My 1999 Les Paul standard is weight relieved and weighs ten pounds.
@@russianbot2397 my historic 58 is just over 8libs and not chambered at all. The danger was even lighter. 8lbs even. No idea, just the wood they were using back then. Such a pleasure and honor to play it. Its the voice of god. ha
@@MOBontv Voice of God indeed! As for the weight, it must be that the wood lost some moisture over time and lost some weight. Especially the heavy maple cap. Though your historic makes no sense being that light. Very strange. Maybe mine doesn't have the weight relief and that's what makes it a boat anchor. I'll have to x-ray it.
@@russianbot2397 Over the holidays, I'll weigh it. It is light but not like the danger. I'll let you know what numbers come up
"Paul sounded awesome. I appreciate the comments about playing unplugged, I have 10 electrics and never played them plugged in first. Had to 'work'. Gary Moore even said something similar for Fire Alarm Blues.
thanks man
@@MOBontv One of the best evaluations is playing guitars unplugged. If she sounds good unplugged, she will be glorious amped up.
Beautiful Les Paul , juicy tone & wonderful playing 👌
thanks so much!
That "Danger Burst" sounds phenomenal! 🤘 What a Killer Les Paul!
truly is! Its amazing
@@MOBontv 🔥💥🤘
I love the note articulation, yet fullness of sound these original Les Pauls have. Modern incarnations lack that.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching
12:18 Best channel switching ever! Everything sounds incredible, that tone is to die for! I'll be waiting for the next episodes! :)
haha, well said! Thanks so much. Episode 2 is out with epi3 coming this wed
Lol .. Actually, it scared the crap outta me - I wasn't expecting it! Hahaha.
Having usable volume and tone pots, you can see the value in it with moves like that. It's as much the delicate depths of the "clean" tone before as much as the sweet saturated roar that erupts after. Modern pots can approximate the latter, but the former not so much.. Not after you see what this Badboy can do.
..I still just can't understand why we can't make the same stuff today 🤷♂️. We have the know-how, the will, the funding (via the massive demand)...we are modern, we are supposed to be the cutting edge...I just don't get it!
Wow!!! What a beautiful instrument! Sounds truly amazing. Great playing as well.
A Tele on steroids??? A Tele would definitely overdose trying to sound like that, my man. Fantastic guitar !
ha, thanks! Love the comment and thanks for watching
Amazing !!! This is the essence of Les Paul tone !!
I'll never have one , but if I did I'd still take the pick guard off it !!!
ha, I went through that phase for a bit. I'd leave it but to each their own. Thanks for watching
Real Guitar + Real Amp + Real Player & Real Vibrato = Wow
CusterFlux thanks so much!
Amazing tone, amazing playing! I had the privilege of checking out a ‘58 and a ‘60 burst. Both had that clear low output tone which the PAFs are synonymous for. Now I knew why they were sought after!
thank you for the compliments! And for watching. More to come too!
Matt’s A Monster Player! Most of all he’s a dynamite great guy and I’m honored to have known him for a long time and call him a friend.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Honored to know you too
Great video, love these series and the commentary of all the real bursts you've had a chance to play. Awesome playing as well.
Woow that blew me off my sofa! Thanks for sharing👍
That is some dang fine playing on a dang fine guitar!
thanks so much! That guitar is magical. Brings out the best in me for sure. Thanks for the support and watching
THE HARMONICS ARE INSANEEEEEEE! IT GIVES OFF AN EFFECT OF A ROUNDED HOLLOW BUT CLEAR NOTER HOW IS THAT?
Wish I knew! The secret sauce is amazing. Every turn of the pots is yet another usable tone. Truly incredible. Thanks for chiming in
@@MOBontv LET ME ASK YOU? DID YOU EVER PLAY A BOUTIQUE REPLICA OR GIBSON REISUE THAT WAS ITS EQUAL? FEEL, TONE, ETC.. IM FLABBERGASTER HOW NOBODY CAN DUPLICATE A 60 YR OLD GUITAR, PICKUPS, HARDWARE....THE ONLY PERSON THAT MAKES PICKUPS JUST AS GOOD IS DAVE STEPHENS, SDPICKUPS, THERES NO DENYING IT, BUT HE WORKS TIRELESSLY ON EACH SET..NOBODYS GONNA DUPLICATE THAT ON AN ESSEMBLY LINE. BUT HE DID IT!
The benefit of lower output humbuckers is overlooked by many. You can push the amp harder and have more tonal possibilities...A good amp and a great guitar, played by an excellent guitarist covers almost all the bases.
Perfectly said. Love the sound of this 59's pat's. Appreciate the watch and the compliment!
When I bought my last house there was ONE thing that was not negotiatable. The house had a huge FROG with carpet which I ripped up within a week. We put down hardwood floors and I told myself with the exception of the amps and a few needed chairs, table "all wood", I was not going to clutter it up. Now the sound up there is glorious!! Vintage Marshalls, some Fender 5e3s, a cord and a my guitar of choice that day.
that's awesome! Congrats.
Holy Grail tone. I would quit my job, move out of my house, and open my case up, and play in the streets to eat, if I owned that rig
haha, me too
I'm sure some one would let you crash as long as you want if you let them play it !
Wow! What else can one say. Absolutely love your approach to playing. You've got more licks than most suckers will ever see in a lifetime
thanks so much! appreciate the comment and the support. That guitar is incredible to say the least. Brings out the best in any player. Thanks again for watching!
nothing sings quite like a 59 les paul
absolutely! Thanks for watching
Well, maybe. Gibson definitely is not able to make good copies of them. You need to find a good builder who has studied how the REAL vintage LP's were really built, all the tiny details, what glues and lacquers etc. Gibson does not use real nitro, but some kind of plasticized finish thats not hard like real nitro is. Their LP's have completely non-authentic hardware and harnesses on them. You can vastly improve them by changing those out. See my post above about my video series on how to do that, and what vintage parts and harnesses sound like vs what Gibson is doing on even their most expensive Les Paul now. There are several builders who build much better Les Pauls than Gibson is doing, a fact. My 20 year reverse-engineering work on vintage PAF's get super close to real vintage PAF's and you can listen to both and watch direct comparisons of vintage vs my replica work on my channel to see for yourself. Unfortunately I have over a year wait time and I don't mass produce. Anyway, great demo, not a fan of Trainwreck amps, but he was a true legend among independent amp builders for sure.
1960. Lol
Thanks so much for truly running a les Paul through it's paces. To many overly precious demos never really get to it. That tone at 8:45is truly tele like. As evident by those funky licks you played, which have never even come to mind when I play my 2017
thanks so much! Stay tuned, we have a series of live band videos coming out in April that feature this Paul yet again. And I really think its amazing to hear it in a real band context.
That sounds amazing!!
thanks for watching!
A great explanation, and a great demonstration - thanks. My first Gibson Les Paul Custom from the late '70's always frustrated me, and I spent a small fortune of money paying for customisations. It was very heavy in weight. I always knew that Jimmy Page achieved a better sound and playability. I had the same experience with my '70's Fender Stratocaster. I eventually changed to the Ibanez RG Series Double Locking Trem, Low Pro, Zero Point Return System. However, if I had have had the Gibson 1959 Les Paul, you played so beautifully, then my life would have been so very different and so much better. You echoed my thoughts exactly. Peace.
Thank so much! Appreciate the views
Amazing!
Thanks! That guitar is about the best I've ever heard.
Fantastic sound! Great playing also!
Thank you for the compliment and for watching!
Great video and what a joy to hear you play!
thanks so much!
Incredible
Thank you! Very special guitar for sure
Thanks Matt for sharing your knowledge and the time and effort taking to makes these amazing tone vids!
my pleasure! thanks for watching
Awesome playing 👏🏼
Thanks so much Scott!
That guitar is old and has a lot of wear. Kidding of course.
Amazingly bright and resonate sounding without being harsh.
I noticed the mic is on the ampeg cabinet.
For sure. Yes, trainwrecks were tuned to go with an Ampeg V4 but loaded with pre-rola celestions of course. Ken was a genius. The combo sounds incredible. Sounds killer with a basketweave, but the Ampeg has more clarity and punch. Thanks for watching
50s Les Pauls sound like a Gibson semi-hollow and Fender Tele had a baby. The sound is traditional Gibson balls with Fender brightness and clarity.
Dead on brother! Thanks for watching
I hope you bought her flowers at least, because you rode that old gal hard! She sounded amazing! If only they could all sound like that.
Right??? ha, what a guitar. Indeed an honor to play it. I just used it on our new record too. Stay tuned for news on the release date. Tracks sound incredible.
Amazing tones!
She sounds just like Pearly to me
thanks! Nothing like it.
This was a great video! Really adds perspective to my 59' Prehistoric Heritage Cherry Sunburst when playing it.
thanks for watching! Any day playing a les paul is a good day
Dude, your playing is off the hook…love it.
Thanks so much! Appreciate the compliment
No pedal sounds as good as natural amp overdrive Late to the party but love these vids
Thanks Paul! Totally agree. Its the amp's job. If it don't sound good, get a different amp. Thanks for watching brother
Hot damn!! Tell me more about that express of yours! Unbelievable tone, Matt. Well done 👍🏻
thanks! Its made by JM under the Fischer Family. Nothing like it!
The Thin necks I like. The Peter Frampton is another and the reissue of it 3 pickup with thin neck is great in the Les Paul world.
I actually like the bigger necks. To each their own for sure. Fun to try them all! My favorite is that bigger soft V. I had the chance to play one of Paul Kossoff's real 58's. It had that V for sure. Love Frampton too! Can't get enough of his playing and singing. Thanks for watching
Nice job, super chops. Love the middle position tone. Big time tele tone. Wish we could get our Historics to sound this good.
thanks so much! totally agree on the reissues. Although I love mine to death. Thanks for watching
Good to see a jersey guy...I'm from jersey too....I've played 2 59s...if you never played one its a true experience in tone...I'm a SG lover....but have a few paul's...my favorite...1989 white beauty...3 factory bill lawrence circut board pick ups...don't see many of them around...great video and great playing...
thanks so much! Appreciate the support
Outstanding, simply outstanding. Great '59, don't think I've heard a better. Great amp, great cab, and great picking too! Thanks much for the upload.
thank you for watching!
The true secret of the burst is the amplification…. They had these bursts in the late 1950s and the dealers virtually couldn’t give them away.
They were thought of as older jazz guys guitars whom the rock an rollers didn’t like, mainly because their music was so difficult to play and they were old…. ( actually they were only about 40, but you get the picture).
Jazz guys didn’t like the often clankly chime and random harmonic overtones of the pickups which distort when you hit the strings hard. If played softly the clarity is unbeatable.
Listen to Mike Bloomfield’s records to hear the PAF sound natural…you get that sound in your clips…. Eric Clapton switched everything on full to get his at the time unique sound … the amps were getting stronger by then and the tubes or if you’re English valves, which had a deeper rounded robust sound.
Also that was a bit of tease wasn’t it…. ?Kossoffs burst and they wouldn’t let you plug it in.
well said! Appreciate the info and the support here. Best to you
Wow..amazing playing and wow this sound, come on!! i want it ....send it to me please!!! lol great guitar!thanx for sharing
Hahah, I want one too! That guitar is insane. Thanks for watching! There's more to come. Every wednesday...
Awesome to see that ‘80s Randall RG head on the pile.
Ha, for sure. Still, that paul is one special burst
Brilliant,
Thank you for watching!
From what I understand, those Trainwreck amps are extremely bright, so yeah, a real vintage LP would sound like a Tele in the middle position from the extremely clean headroom of that amp. Neck clarity, well there are real reasons for that, and I've not had any problems getting that sound with my work. Most factory pickups and "booteek" "winders" don't know how to get that kind of clarity in the neck, and it has nothing to do with what magnet you use, either. I like headroom, but those Trainwrecks are just too edgy for my own tastes, even harsh at times. As for the pots, those are Centralab pots, there are no pots being made in our times that even come close, and no, the vintage taper CTS pots will never be able to do much more than a pale imitation. The reason is the physical carbon tracks on the Centralabs, are much wider and much thicker than anything made now. The thicker carbon also makes the pots have great clarity and transparency. If you want to see video of a dissected Centralab pot vs. modern CTS, I just uploaded part 3 of my video series "The Les Paul That Isn't." The series covers the vintage hardware and harnesses in vintage Les Pauls, and how you fix the mistakes all current Gibson Les Pauls have on them, to take your guitar back to the 50's tones for very little money and not alot of work.
thanks for the info! I have you ever tried the vintage inspired pots? I have a set here and they claim that its an exact copy of centralab. I still haven't installed mine yet but will do soon and do a video on it. Love to hear your thoughts on them. Wrecks can be dialed back on the top end, but then you lose that chime that I love so much.
Wonderful playing 👏. I fitted a treble bleed to my CS 58 LP , it too sounds like a fat tele when you roll the Voll back.
Very nice playing, and beautiful guitar ofcourse. I just finished my second LP build, time that you try-out those two😂. Both a copy of the '59. Only the second build has a reduce weight in the body about 430gr. But sounds beautiful too.
Thanks so much! It was a dream to play that guitar that day. Just incredible
The neck pickup on the Dangerburst is the voice of god. One sweet Burst.
Right??? I was saying the same thing. Thanks for watching. I have a bunch of videos coming with me playing it live with my band. Stay tuned...
What is the difference of having the covers on or off , and why do the covers only have one row of posts ?
There is a tone difference in having them on or off. Probably better clarity without them, but I just love the classic look. All mine have covers. Hope this info helps and thanks for watching

thanks brother George! Great to hear from you. Hope you are well my friend
Good video. Simple and direct. And nice playing.
thanks so much!
No current production guitar will ever sound like this
unfortunately! What a guitar it is, truly amazing. Thanks for watching!
Great,, perfect tone,, fantastic guitar,
PEGGY BOYLESTON thank you!
What what your recording setup for sound with this video? What did the mics plug into, thanks!
Mics were into Neve 1073 pres into protools. There was a room mic too. Its still hard to capture the experience of being in the room, but we sure tried. Thanks for asking
The old stuff is too valuable for me, even if I could afford it I'd be scared to play them - much less travel with them. Just got a used Maybach Lester Honey Pie (came with a name!) off Reverb, and couldn't be more impressed, cost less than $2,000USD. The German made "Amber" pickups sound just like a good PAF, clarity like a fat telecaster!
I heard the homage to Billy Gibbons and his version of "Brown Sugar" in the riffs!
Absolutely! Love Billy. Hero for me for sure. thanks for watching
I played the same guitar at the philly show. Also played the 57 goldtop at the same show same booth. Both were heaven . I went to the show this year in July . I compared my 2019 LP 50s gold top to a real 57 gold top and it was very very close. Everyine at the booth was excited about the 2019. I think the new 50s 60s standatds are very special. They feel like a vintage piece. If you haven't played one yet id love to bring it to you i live close lol
Ok so I'm sat here with my own LesPaul, looking down and looking up and looking down, and looking up, and thinking DAAAAAAMN!! Really nice playing bud. To think these instruments were built when music was so very different and distortion was a waste product to be embarrassed about. Strange how life goes, and how we change things, but how telling that a 60 year old Gibson can keep up and blow the tears right of the bluest son of a....
haha, thanks so much! I appreciate the nice words and you watching
Have they ever try to truly recreate the PAF pickup? I realize they can’t use the same wood, though. Just wondering.
I wish they could and would. So far, nutin! Ha, thanks for watching
Phenomenal playing! 👌👌👌 Great demo
Thanks so much! Appreciate the support
I would love to know how it was set up and what the string gauge was, cause I think part of that kiss like sound formed at the attack might be due to the action?

for sure. Thanks for watching!
Fabulous tone
C.J. Blake thanks so much!
I don’t understand how it thins out when you roll down the volume knobs..... Most humbuckers lose that clarity when rolling down the volume unless there’s a treble bleed resistor. Sounds fantastic Matt!
Thanks! Yeah, its magical for sure. Definitely a mystery
not all vintage ones are light, there's a 54 at 10lb a 60 custom at 12lb and alot of 59s over 9lb, seems they were all over the place
ahh, thanks for more info. I've had the honor of playing 3 including the Danger. All 3 were light but Danger the lightest by far. Thanks for watching
@@MOBontv I've played a 58, 54, 56 and 55 custom plus other vintage guitars and i love them personally, no modern mass produced guitar comes close imo, the 58 and 54 were both around 8.8lb and play and sound fantastic, i do alot of searching for vintage info and like to point some stuff out like they're not all honduran, a refinished 56 is African mahogany and won't be the only one
