Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich utilized one of the oldest formations in the history of football -- the 19th century T Formation -- and slightly tailored it to be a weapon in the modern game. In 2022, Penn State averaged better than 5 yards per play out of the T Formation.
Coach Codutti takes us through Penn State's base play out of the T, and then shows us how this formation evolved throughout the season in a series of shifts that forced the defense to adjust and communicate on the fly.
NEW FTB FILM STUDY VIDS will appear regularly throughout Spring Practice and the offseason.

A few thoughts:
1) I love the QB under center rather than in the gun on every snap. For an elite QB it provides him with a lot more options with a solid running game
2) Yes, it's a copy-cat league, and that includes the defense. If the T formation is successful, defenses will adapt
3) Sometimes you can be successful with plays and formations against equal or lesser talent that won't work with freakish talent that you'll face playing against top 10 programs.
Love the play breakdown. That was the fastest 11 minutes of the week!
Only channel that gets my 'like' before I even watch the vid
ha we'll do our best to never steer you wrong Paul. Appreciate the support!
Besides the T-Formation, I think going to more gap scheme run blocking helped a ton as well. It allows the OL to be more aggressive with downhill blocking. I can speak for many PSU fans saying it's refreshing to see after so many years of finnesse zone blocking that didn't allow for as much attacking by the OL. Give me old school smah mouth in the run game all day!
Great breakdown!
Great analysis as always Coach!
It is a circle that is being completed. Back when the spread passing game came around. It was stated in few years people will forget how to defend power formations.
T-Formation is a classic set, with several variations. Two TEs, one TE, SE, or Two WRs.
That then can lead to moving into a Wing-T.
It great to see the return of true power football.
What's old becomes new and what's cutting edge becomes dull.
Awesome video coach!
I’ve ran similar stuff at the highschool and youth level and have completely SMASHED people
Love watching a defense scramble when going from their 32p check to their empty check
What I love the most about this stuff is can all stay the exact same for the offensive line it’s just wide zone left or wide zone right
Watched a 1959 video of Penn State vs. Army and Syracuse of the Ernie Davis era. It was virtually identical in every way with the T-formation and the white uniforms with large numbers. The Rip Engle teams did this stuff for a very long time.
That's cool...did you watch it online?!?! If so, we'd love the link to check it out.

Disappointed you didn’t call it the Trautwein formation. Amazed by the content as usual
Now if MY would add some misdirection and an occasional. ...pitch.
There was literally a pitch to the left for an easy TD against Indy in this breakdown.
This is crazy because i never noticed they ran the T. I have been saying with multiple mobile qbs and the latest football strategies (rpo) I think the T could have a rennissance and the team i watch is the one running it!!! Of ocurse they aren't running it with multiple hybrid qbs but....
The only thing I dislike about this video is that it shows how close we were to beating Ohio State.
Also I hope they hit OSU with the Tyler Warren Sluggo this year for six
Read our mind. Natural evolution to that shift.
What's hilarious is that there are colleges that run this consistently and do they win consistently? Nope!
All the old people act like this is somehow greatness. In short "to go" situations it's great from time to time, but try to run this vs an elite defense consistently and you'll lose. Period. #WEARE
I thought we used to call this the elephant backfield
PSU gives a whole different meaning to "T Time"
A fake option with this formation would be sick. The middle RB and QB run opposite direction from the play. So...Line and 2 outside RBs go right, QB fakes handoff, completes the turn with the middle RB going left and runs it as an option from there. Just an extra wrinkle that could make defenses have to defend the whole width of the field rather than just following where the line goes
So much mad scientist stuff you can do out of T. Last year we suggested lining up Tyler Warren (former QB) in Strange's spot, snapping the ball through the under center QB's legs, and throwing a pop pass. scroll down to our formation section in this blog post fortheblogy.com/hindsight-2022-penn-state-offense-vs-ohio/
