I was content playing GBA via 3DS Virtual Console 'injections' for a long time. This meant I was able to use an original slate 2DS (the one with a comfy form factor that feels like a true Game Boy in the hand). MiSTer is untouchable for the analogue output to a CRT though.
honestly, all things considered a 3ds is a pretty decent option to carry a ton of games with you. kind of amazing how many generations of gameboy you can load up at once
@@siegarettes even thier new 3ds xl how gba and ds games. First don't own gba and second thier known problems gba vc injections mainly some games don't save right. So probably like 98% of gba games work right. Still good games like super mario bros 3 sonic advance 1 2 3. Thier best way play on Nintendo is switch because emulate great and Even support rumble on games like mario and Luigi Superstar Saga.
Came here from your Analogue Pocket video. I love your critiques and video styles. I wish more people followed you. Here's your sign to post more about emulation, new sub :]
@@siegarettes Don't worry about it, do things at your own pace. I admit the last part of the comment gave off the vibe of me forcing you to post more, but my intent was to let you know people are still watching and don't give up!
For a while I played gba games on my modded dsi LL via twilight menu and gbarunner2 but after purchasing an upgraded GBA advance with an IPS screen, I was hooked. Pick up an everdrive GBA mini and I'm set. My second option for playing on the go, is the DS lite. You can't go wrong with that.
I've been getting into modding my GBA systems this year and learned a decent amount about soldering in the process. I love my agb model system that has a mother 3 shell/color scheme with chrome buttons and all the audio enhancements. When I'm not playing that at work though I like the Mister and Steam Deck for a larger screen and more emulation features. I used to have a gba consolizer too but just sold that since it seemed to be redundant with all the other options I had.
I opened up my modded gba once cuz I thought i could handheld it since I modded by gbc. looking at the guts really drives home what a generational leap that thing was over the gameboy. learning to solder on that board is no cheap feat! that custom color scheme sounds pretty sick, too. I really wanted a consolizer, but I'm glad I ended up with a mister instead, because it was just way too much in cost.
@@siegarettes The mister is the way to go for sure since it can do 1440p instead of just 720p. You can grab one of those GB Operators too to transfer saves from original carts back and forth.
I got my gba from Game Changer Mods too! Great store, and the IPS screen paired with the original form factor is incredible. Especially when playing games like Link to the Past that require frequent use of Select.
heck yeah. I also bought a DMG from them with a biverted screen and it just feels so chunky and good. and definitely agreed on the button placement for the original model gba
The DSi runs GBA games pretty well now if you run it with GBARunner3's test build. Won't run every romhack, but on a DSi XL it runs every game released for it very well
I still have a DS Lite back when they were still being sold. Wonder if there's any new parts or batteries to renew an old one, because wow has it been through the wringer. Same can partially be said for my less crusty GBA. GBA mods can be interesting too, especially with the homebrew scene at hand. Seeing new games being made just for this era of game things is crazy. This was a good video, thanks for uoloading
iFixit at least has new batteries it seems, and I'm sure there are replacement parts for the DS, tho I'm not super well versed in those. it is definitely exciting to see new retro games, especially on a portable. and you're welcome, glad you enjoyed it
I was still using VBA until a couple years ago where I started using VBAm which seems to work a little better, but I'm mostly using it to play turn-based RPGs anyway
great video! i completed pokemon emerald via emulator on a Samsung Galaxy 5 (not S5, way older than that) while commuting. actually kind of workable way of playing gba since it had a dpad
Another great video - I still have my original AGS-101 but the ghosting has become distracting over time. Tempted to mod my original, non clamshell unit! Hope you are well!
Thank you for the kind words! Def think a modded original would be a great supplement to the AGS. it is just super nice, and there are so many good options for mods now.
GBA is a sick console, flaws and all. Glad I grabbed a DS Lite a few years back for $15 before the collectors market went nuts. 😊 That modded advance has a gorgeous screen btw. Gonna need to hear your thoughts on the amiyumi game.
hate how expensive the retro market is now, that's the price those things should be! and yeah, I booted up that AmiYumi game for the aesthetic but it has decent amount going on! def need to dig into it again later
the dsixl screens are actually a decent size bigger. most of the ips screens are sourced from leftover parts for other devices off the market, and many are nicer than a DS screen. the dsi's resolution also doesn't line up with the gba, where a good modkit has about 2x the resolution of the original gba.

don't worry, I gotcha! and thank you for the support! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.
GBA lovers! What's your current favorite way to play GBA? And what games have you been playing?
My 3ds
My only way for a while now has been using my Powkiddy Q90, playing Mario Kart, Mario Advance, Advance Wars, etc
GBA SP with AGS screen.
Did u get a chance to test that option and how does it compare ?
I have, but I personally find the SP size to be kinda cramped for my big ass hands

sadly lost the massive cart collection I had years ago. replaced it with a flashcart tho so if I really wanted I could copy saves between em.

VBAm def a good successor, and the fast forward is probably a godsend for rpgs.
Less ‘favourite’ more the only one I’ve got, but I get a lot out of playing GBA games on my Retroid Pocket 2+, I love that bad boy
yeah it's def a cool all-arounder with tons of options for messing around.
wish they'd swapped that dpad placement tho
@@siegarettes 100%, I spend as much time messing around with it as I do actually playing it hahaha

oh my god that's a throwback lol.
I used to have a similar phone that I played so many Java games on

Don't GBA IPS mods typically use DSi XL screens? What would the difference be between just playing on a modded DSi XL versus a hard modded GBA?

thank you!
OG DS 4 life!
Good job!
So ds lite yeh? 😂
it's pretty good all things considered! I wish they made an xl with a gba slot
