    Hey Ed, I got the aquascapes university material for rec pond builds. I don’t remember seeing anything about if you have to do external pumps or not. Could you clarify? Or is it clearly just for safety reason.

    • @EdThePondProfessor
      @EdThePondProfessor  3 года назад +1

      If one of the goals of the water feature is for swimming you’ll need to install External Pumps to keep the motor out of the water.
      Even though Submersible pumps and current GFCI Protected outlets are safe it’s against swimming codes.

    Love the in-depth explanation of the ground water drainage system. That’s going to help a lot of people! I’m curious about the external pumps. Would low volt submersibles be acceptable? If not can you teach us how to install the bulkheads for external systems? Thanks so much for this content👍

    • @TylerTervooren
      @TylerTervooren 3 года назад

      I think low voltage submersibles would be considered safe, but externals are typically used when the pond is designed for people, and those ponds tend to be larger than your average backyard pond. I don't think you could find a low voltage pump with enough power to handle the turnover required for a pond like that. Maybe if you used 50 of them?

    • @kevinwhitmore4401
      @kevinwhitmore4401 3 года назад

      @@TylerTervooren there’s some pretty decent ones available. Aquascape here in Australia has a 36volt model that will move 20,000 litres/ hr. Oase has 12,000 litre/ hr 12volt.

    Ed, if I build a wetland filter on my pond can I (or should I) still use Maintain to keep it algae free? I'm installing a 2400 gal pond and my wetland filter will 25% of the surface area. I plan to have no more than 3 koi.
    Thanks for the info on carbon footprint! I had no idea.

  • @TylerTervooren

    Hey Ed. How long can rubber liners be repaired for? Everything fails eventually, and I think one of the reasons the old school builders insist on concrete is because it can be patched and repaired basically forever. Does there come a time in a rubber liner's life that it simply can no longer be repaired and must be replaced?

    • @EdThePondProfessor
      @EdThePondProfessor  3 года назад +1

      Great question!
      We have one remaining concrete pond that we maintain in the Chicago area, the Concrete was installed new in 1999 it can no longer be repaired effectively......
      It’s getting removed soon???
      However I have many, many liner ponds installed prior to 1999 that are still working great!!!
      The hardest part about repairing an Old liner is cleaning the scale buildup from the surface to get down to a clean section of EPDM to make a Repair or Seam,
      What I’ll do if possible is repair the side that’s in contact with the soil, it’s much easier to clean but sometimes it’s difficult to get to the bottom side of the liner(depends on the project)
      I hope this helps!

  • @brianparker460
    @brianparker460 3 года назад

    Hey Ed how do you hide the flex PVC pipe coming out of the wetland filter, and do you need to take care to make it insulated so it won't freeze during the winter time?

  • @LampWaters
    @LampWaters 2 года назад +1

    How tall or deep can you do the architectural block walls?

    • @EdThePondProfessor
      @EdThePondProfessor  2 года назад

      It depends on the type/manufacturer of the Wall block and there installation specifications.
      If Geo-grids are adding to the walls you can go higher with the walls without fear of collapse.

  • @LampWaters
    @LampWaters 2 года назад

    What kind of polyurethane adhesive are you using? I'm actually working on another project before I build my rec pond but it too calls for a bonding agent and I'll trying out a few products I found at my local store so I would appreciate any input so I can experiment with adhesives, bonding, polyurethane and blocks and gravel. I'm testing out bonding pebbles together and if it works potentially I might bond together any pea pebble bottom I put in my pool later but I'm also going to do block walls too and I want to experiment before I do our DIY build.

    Hey ED I have a question. I’m going constructing a pond and I’m putting in a wetland filter as well as a spillway that’s on a different side of the pond then where the wetland is. Is it ok to “T” into the pipe from my vault or do I need two different pumps? And if I can T off the pipe can I just put a ball valve to the spill way to regulate the flow? Just wondering if there is going to be enough water volume for both

    • @EdThePondProfessor
      @EdThePondProfessor  3 года назад

      Great question!
      Yes,
      You can install a “T” to split the water flow, just make sure that you have the proper pump and flow rate for your application.
      How big is the Wetland?
      What pump are you looking at?

    • @tybrix
      @tybrix 3 года назад

      Pond is going to be smaller 8x11 with a 10 ft stream leading from the wetland to the pond. Wetland is going to be 6x9. I’m still in the drawing stage. But that’s what I’m looking at.

    I think that’s the first pond you guys have built with a some what bottom drain. Concrete is good but doesn’t grow with Algae well. Amazing base cause it doesn’t settle like rock and liner through time, but you still need something for the algae to grow on and that’s where pollyurea spray works amazing. That’s how the real ponds are built
