I flunked that test. The truth is that my dentures kept coming out and obviously I couldn't exhale in that condition. Doc thought I had COPD because I was extremely tired, but I could breathe easily. I sensed my sinuses were tender and he gave me three courses of antibiotics. They cured my fatigue in a day, my sinuses in two weeks.

Hello , Regarding VC parameters My spirometry machine does not calculate the TLC and RV and does not tell the preducted value for age height ,sex for them.instead , It measures VC , IRV ,ERV, TV , IVC, EVC with predicted values. So, how to measure manually TLC and RR and get predicted values? is it possible? If not , are the measured values equal to TLC and RV in evaluating wheter the disease is obstructive or restrictive?

Is FEV1 normal in expirational restrictive lung diseases, and if so, why would it not be lower as in obstructive? Wouldn't it be more difficult to breathe out quickly?

Could someone explain me why the inhale volume gets added to the exale volume to get the total? I don't get it. I would think that the inhale volume is the same as the exhale and even if this wasn't true I would substract both to get the difference and the add to the total. If I blow volume of air in a balloon the volume of air I blow in the balloon will be the same as the volume that will come out. Please could someone explain me why this is here so different.

Yes, this video is quite confusing. TLC cannot be measured by simply adding inhalation and exhalation because we cannot exhale the RV, which is the volume of air that remains in the lungs after a max exhalation and without it the lungs would collapse. Actually, TLC can measured by adding the vital capacity (volume of air that can be exhaled after a max inhalation) to the residual volume. TLC= VC+RV

Why is it not possible to measure the inspiratory reserve volume directly?

No we can measure it .
      By spirometry .
