Had my car run out of gas, filled it up and it wouldn't start, added 2 additional gallons and it started back up. But while I was trying to get car started with the low gas my old stater probably got damaged because after trying to start the car the next day it was no crank no start just like when it ran out of fuel. Went to AutoZone and the starter tested ok, but it was not engaging when I put it back on the car, I thought the fuel system was done for sure, but luckily after tapping the starter I was able to get a crank, got a new stater and it started back up.

If you need tires, the General Altimax RT43 is an inexpensive tire but very highly rated by many consumer rating services. Recommended them to a friend for his Subaru Forester; that week at a local tire store, they were the same price as a similarly-sized Chinese tire. Mechanics (and people in general) pull the 10% number out of their butt, I’m sure there have been actual studies done though. However it is definitely significantly less, I’d say 10-25% wear compared to city driving.
      Reasons:
      1. Better/consistent cooling of the engine, transmission, and every other moving part.
      2. Engine and transmission are at a relatively steady state rather than going up and down in revs and shifting all the time.
      3. The engine really doesn’t put out a lot of power just cruising, thus low stress on both the engine and transmission.
      4. More miles per heat cycle. (A heat cycle is when the engine goes from ice cold to operating temperature back to ice cold, overtime that process weakens and fractures metal.)
      5. Brakes get used less, thus less pad and rotor wear.
      6. Less stopping and going means less stress on basically every mounting bolt and suspension piece on the car.
      7. Wider and less frequent turns put less stress on all the steering components.
There’s more reasons but those are the biggest ones that come to mind. A proof of concept is basically look up any very high mileage (500,000+ miles) car stories on RUclips or forums and they’ll all say how they drive for their job etc.

Never use retreads for your tires! I had a friend who bought retreads, back in the '80s, and I was the one he called to find him and change his stripped or flat tires. Back in the late-1980s, I found a 15" wheel with a good tire on it on the side of the road and I took it to use as a spare since my 1974 Cadillac ambulance's tremendous weight chewed up tires fast (I bought this ambulance for an RV and it worked great hauling stuff when I removed the paramedic's chair). The next flat I got, I put this found wheel on and it worked fine, but only for a few days. While driving around, I heard a flapping sound. I pulled over and saw the tire's retread peeled away from the rest of the tire and wrapped itself around my rear axle. Never use retreads!

Some cars now a days are even automatically rev matching when downshifting too which helps reduce transmission wear. It helps ensure instant acceleration if necessary....and sounds much cooler lol

Negative. PLENTY used tires around. EBAY is actually the best. I get 7-8/32 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s in 265-35-18 for my E46 M3 for $100 to $130 with free shipping. $20 to mount and spin balance.
They are barely used. A new one is $250!!!
My size is a little harder to find. But I just wait and search and buy when I see a deal. Every tire has been perfect.

Yep. Enter your parameters in the normal Ebay search window. Look for: Free shipping and 7/32 or GREATER tread measurement. Buy tires five years old and younger. Google how to read the DOT code for week and year of manufacture. Typically most tires are between 1 and 2 years old. Stay away from 6/32 and less tires. They are not worth messing with. ..unless they are an unusually good deal. I got a matching set of 4 tires, Craigslist local pickup that were 6/32 that turned out great because of the super low price I paid.
A 7-8/32 tire will look almost brand new and last a long time.
The seller almost always shows the DOT code in a photo.
Do NOT worry about a professional internal patch. They are GTG. I get my tire mounters to look at them before mounting. Never an issue. I have bought about 16 tires on Ebay (free shipping)and Craigslist (local pick up).
All ultra high performance tires..Michelin Pilot Super
      Sport or Pilot Sport 4s

Indian Motorcycle: back in 1978, in Greeneville TN, I was in the old man's shop that had the Harley Davidson dealership in the 1940's & 1950's. The outside of the building looked like any old run down country store with plank siding. Walking into it was like you stepped back in time. He had glass display counter, parts shelves and a row of motorcycles. The oldest looking like bicycles with engines to bikes from the 50's. Where he use to work on bikes was meticously clean and well organized. What really blew me away was a 1953 Indian Chief, bright red and it looked like it had just rolled off the assembly line. It was 80 cubic inch sidevalve V-twin with hand shift.
The story behind the red Chief was in 1953 a man from North Carolina brought it in to be serviced and never came back to get it. Don't know what happened to him but his Indian was still sitting there 25 years later shining like new money waiting on him.
The old man that owned the shop died and a huge Harley Davidson dealership from South Carolina bought it and moved the building and everything in it.
Now you can't even tell there was ever a building there.
    But I remember...

Couldn't see if someone else said this, but you have to prime the gas pump after running it out. Turn the key all the way forward WITHOUT cranking. You want do do this 5-10 times for a long wheel-base vehicle, it'll pump a quick shot in each time (you should hear your fuel pump buzz each time you do this) into the fuel line. After this, it should start - this, of course, is only if the pump isn't burned out like Scotty said!

    • @bretthallahan9294
      @bretthallahan9294 4 года назад

@Mark Codiroli this is to prevent dry cranking for a long period of time so it starts immediately. Most regular folks don't think about the line being dry and crank for a few seconds each time and give up so they don't "break" their car. But still others will crank non stop and overheat their starter and/or fuel pump. Yes, these anecdotes are from experience.

I didn't have very much money for the $400 used engine. I'm pretty good at books and manuals, and back in 1994 - there was no Scotty on RUclips, nor any internet except American Online. LOL. I bought a repair manual (a book) , bought a new crank shaft, bought a racing cam for good measure. I did the entire job all by myself; took me a month working about 2 hours a day, put everything back together and it ran great. The racing cam made it run like a V8. No one believes me, since the only thing I had ever done up til then to car engine was change the oil. It is really hard to rebuild a transmission?

Note that truckers typically don't run retreads on the front axle for practical reasons. Lose a front tire tread - big problem. If you lose a tread on one of your duals it isn't nearly as big a deal. Losing any single tire on your car is a big deal.

A little factoid about the Merc F1 eng. Due to the ultra high rpms those engs ran at, the tolerances needed to be very tight and that's at operating temp. So essentially the eng was a seized slug at room temp. They had special equip that ran heated oil and coolant thru the nonrunning eng until it was able to be turned over. It was a great engineering excersize and a remarkable feat to build and run a 3L(the first ones may have 3.5L) eng that could turn around 24,000 rpms but was redlined to an allowable 18k by regulation. Hardly practical for running to the store for bread and milk. So they dumped them since they had no practical value for everyday use. The mftrs want to develop for consumer cars, simplify, reduce displacement and weight, yet more power, economy, reliability, and longentivity

For some specialized vehicles, like those used in mining, retreading is the only economically viable option. The new tires cost 10s of thousands of dollars each. Retreading cost 1000s of dollars. Those humongous vehicles move slowly in designated area, the danger of tread separation is a lesser concern, the wear and tear cost big money.

It's possible to get good quality retreads, you just have pay for them. The airlines have been using retread tires way before I was a glint in my fathers eye. Back in the late 70's early eighties the jets where throwing retreads, causing fuselage damage, damage to engines that where mounted on the tail. Imagine a wheel at 0 mph and the next moment 180 mph. The glueing process improved now these tires are being retreaded up to 7 times. Note that back in the day tire pressure was 180 psi. Today cold pressure is around 200 psi.
