  • This is the 4th video in a series that features the new baby gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Today is March 6th. This baby gorilla was born on October 26, he is now 18 weeks old. His mother, Nneka, is a young mother who did not show proper maternal care after birth. So, a surrogate - not his birth mother - has taken over caring for the baby. The surrogate is a gorilla named Fredrika (or Freddy, age 47). She had 7 babies of her own. Kayembe was the first gorilla zoo born in Cleveland.
    Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21

    New here, what is the background story or where can I find?

    • @larrysanimalsafari
      @larrysanimalsafari  2 года назад +9

      I'll try to make it brief…baby gorilla born at Cleveland Zoo Oct 26,2021, young mother (age 23) delivers baby, does not show proper maternal care, an older female in the troop (age 47) stepped in and started caring for baby. She has previously cared for 4 babies. She (Fredricka/Freddy) is referred to as the surrogate mother. More videos to come.

    Seeing this again in Dec. '23 and getting kind of choked up, tbh. Freddie was so elderly - in gorilla years - when she took on a new baby. Her kindness/zen w/Kayembe will stay with all of us.
    I think he will be an amazing troop leader one of these days... Her legacy is in our 💕 hearts.

      Yep, and to reply to one of your questions.
      Keep in mind, human babies suck on a pacifier to calm/soothe themselves. We think Kayembe does the same. His nutritional needs are met when he is fed formula and Orangutan milk from a bottle by the zoo keepers.

    • @MrKevy40
      @MrKevy40 2 года назад +1

      How are they producing orangutan milk?Have they trained an orangutan mom to let them pump milk from her. Do you have any videos of him taking a bottle?Great work you do

    • @larrysanimalsafari
      @larrysanimalsafari  2 года назад +3

      @MrKevy40 FYI the zoo has a troop of Orangutans. One had a baby this past year and they had some orangutan milk (actually colostrum) banked from the mom Orangutan Kera Wak. I will be releasing a video this weekend that refers subscribers to a RUclips video released by the zoo that has many interesting details about the birth of Kayembe and his care. Stay tuned.--update- my video 8-1/2 gives details of where to look. No, I don't have any videos of them actually feeding Kayembe by bottle. Thanks for following.

I'm not sure what he was thinking when he started to jump outta that hammack, but wow Freddy was quick on that one! She's like we're gettin you down on the floor for a while. Do your jumpin on the floor, not the hammock!lol She's such a great mom. It's just almost unbelievable how human like they really are. No one would ever know Freddy wasn't his bio-mom. It couldn't have been more perfect that his foster mom was right there and they didn't have find a surrogate somewhere else and have to move him away. ❤🤗Big Hugs Kyembie!!

      Well, as you may know Freddy is the surrogate mom. She is 47 years old and has raised 4 infants of her own. The zoo has not released much info on nursing that except I've learned Fredrika (Freddy) is lactating. I believe the infant suckles like human babies use a pacifier, for comfort.
