- This is the 7th video in a series that features the new baby gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. This video shows that gorilla - Kayembe. Here he is kept close to mom, since he is just 22 weeks old. Kayembe was burying his head against her body and she was wrapping her arms around him.
As you may know by now, Kayembe is the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. His mother was Nneka, age 23, and father was Mokolo, age 34. Unfortunately, Nneka did not show proper maternal care after birth. The good news is, the oldest female in the troop stepped in. Fredrika, a 47-year-old female, who raised four infants herself, has been taking care of Kayembe. Kayembe is fed formula and Orangutan milk by zoo staff.
Birthdates: Kayembe 10/26/21, Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89.

I remember the movie when he was born, everyone raved about how affectionate his mother was, and I asked if we were watching the same movie! It's good that he has such a wonderful foster mother, it's a real treasure, raised by a gorilla with her tenderness and love because she loved him, will be completely different than even the most carefully raised by a human. It just goes to show, ALL babies fight their nap time. Mum is doing her best to settle the little one, holding, patting, hugging, yep as a mother myself, we’ve all been there. 🤣😂 ❤️💋

Beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. You would never know that Fredricka was not his birth mother. She has so much love to share. He is absolutely breath-taking. How often does the staff feed Kayembe? How does the staff know he wants to eat? What does Nneka do when she sees her baby? Has Mokolo seen his son? I appreciate your response and thank you for the lovely video.
I have not been able to talk to a keeper in the last two weeks. He was on a feeding schedule every 4 hours, but that was a while ago. I’ll ask around next week. Nneka sees the baby daily. She only shows a passing interest. Each of the females has gotten closer to Kayembe recently. But, Freddy does not let them pick up the baby yet. Mokolo sees Kayembe daily. When staff feeds Kayembe, he and Freddy are right there at his side. Mom and Dad get green beans as a treat when joining them. (Freddy brings Kayembe to the back of enclosure to be fed)

It truly is amazing how much they are like us. She is laying there patting the baby to sooth it. Also running her finger nails up and down his back gently to sooth him. It’s amazing to witness and watch.❤️

Fredrieka is being a beautiful mother to him, but I am curious, was neither mother able to breast feed him?
The birth mom abandoned him immediately after birth. Fredrika, 47 yr old female, picked him up minutes later and has cared for him ever since. She raised 4 babies herself , so she has experience. She surprised zoo staff by beginning to lactate , I think , a few weeks after she started caring for him. Zoo staff feed him by a bottle to supplement what Fredrika gives him.
See my 38 second video, the birth and care of Kayembe . There I provide a link to a zoo program (that was videotaped)where zoo staff give a 45 minute talk on his birth and then all about his care. It’s really interesting.
He still has a ways to go to grow into his head

How did Freddi have milk ? Did she lose a baby?
Freddie began to spontaneously lactate. It has been known to happen when some females take on caring for infants. Although this time, Freddie is past the child bearing age and she had a hysterectomy the previous year, was 47 years old.
So very perfect in every way! One of God's most amazing creatures!
