- Street skater Matt Hensley was one of skateboarding's all time Game Changers. Throughout the mid to late 80's, street skating emerged from the underground, while the industry and the skate world's collective consciousness was still focused on pools, ramps and transition. Perhaps the most significant flash point of the tech street revolution that would almost entirely take over skateboarding by the early 90's was H-Street rider Matt Hensley's impact on this generation.
Footage: Dave Slosshbach, Dan Sturt, Fairman's Skate Shop.
Music: Tommy Tornado and The Clerks, Gypsy Ska
This dude was on a road trip to somewhere and randomly pulled into downtown Houston one afternoon and just ripped skating a few hours with me and this other kid i knew who was only slightly older. Super nice, super mellow, drew me a picture and signed autographs, then took off. One of the coolest things that ever happened to me.
Sounds like when I met Money Mark from the Beastie Boys at the recording studio. He handed me his entire bag of weed and said "smoke it all but one bowl". So that's what we did.
Same happened to me with the Gonz in 🪦 RIP #huntington park
In My whole life, the most excited I've ever been to go skate was after watching his part in Shackle Me Not for the first time - it changed everything🙏🙏🙏
Such an influential skater. HStreet Shackle me not blew the other skate videos away during that era.
I had his stained glass window graphic deck. It was the best deck I ever owned. I grew up huge fan of Natas and Hensley. No comply underflips:)
Hell yeahh, what'a footage! ...many of those I never seen before 😮 ...What'a LEGEND a truly Ripper for sure 🔥
Mini ramp footage is gold!
Natas and Hensley - changed my life.
These clips are golden. Some where new to me.
Anyone who didn’t skate through that era can’t comprehend how much ahead Hensley was of his time. Some of the tricks in the video took decades until they where seen again or became standard.
For the most part of Hensley’s career he skated on the old type of board design with steep concave, high tail, really wide at the front and almost no nose. It was difficult to skate street with those boards. But Hensley had so much board control that he could skate those boards with style.
I remember watching all the H-Street, Powell Peralta, World Industries, and other VHS skate films then going out and trying to do everything these guys did ( Hensley, Danny Way, Barbee, Hill, Templeton, Gonz Natas, etc etc ) man those were the absolute golden years of life that will forever live in my memories !
@@somenothin608 we all did, but some tricks where considered impossible so they passed by unnoticed.
So sick!! I’ve never seen any of this footage 🙏 Hensley was way ahead of his time in the late 80s/early 90s and hugely influential. I remember on my first trip out to California from Florida I picked up a wallet chain like Matt. Came home thinking I was the coolest kid in town 😂 Too bad he retired so young. He surely could’ve done much more ❤
Great footage
One of the all time greatest!!!!!!!!
My 3rd board was a Plan B Hensley. Great to see this vid!
Yeah Matt
Shout out Hensley, Gonz, Natas, Vallely, Allen, Thiebaud, Guerrero and all the early Street Skating pioneers. We owe you!
Also Julien stranger
Nice. Always stoked to see Matt Hensley skate.
Just a kid from Vista, CA skating in Harlem. One of the best 👍👍🍻

Matt skating the Harlem banks.👏🏼🙏🏼✊🏼
And Brooklyn Banks too
I remember him. Good times from Los Angeles!
Fun fact: Hensley was the next ON Video feature when they went under. Man I wish that happened...
Dude, you footage is always so dope!!! Keep em coming!!
Cool footage ♡
Amazingly good
Hensley and Tom Knox were the curb Killers back in my day of riding. Cut their pictures out of magazines and taped them on my wall as a teen back then.
Probably skaters were those guys that when the majority of boys teenagers had pictures of ladies on their walls or school folders, the skaters had mostly guys since the pro scene was mainly manly at that time
Always fun to watch Matt's skating. The Carnival Polka sounding music around the middle of this video though. Haha!
I remember seeing Flogging Molly in 2002, they introduced the band on stage, and when they said, "Matt Hensley", I was like, WTF!
So stoked on this! Thanks for posting.
Only time I have seen a backside 180 north.
And back then it wasn’t called a ollie north yet either. Just a one footer.
Back in 91 I had back and front 180 1 footed on lock , I still love the style from those days !
Backside kickflip to tail on mini, wtf. Took me hundreds of tries to just land it. 1 and done in my book yet Hensley did with effortless style consistently. So sick.
Thanks!
My neighbour named his dog Hensley after this legend 😊
‘Meat only.. no cheese or lettuce thank you very much ‘
😍
Let's not forget that Matt also shared Operation Ivy with so many skaters....
omg, nice pull- haven't seen like 95 percent of this footage (though I'm pretty sure at least 50 percent of it is from the Gullwing videos).
Night footy at Brooklyn banks, super good
My old skinhead mate Matt......still keeping the faith
Mum: Hey! where dog's choke-chain gone?
Me: I.. don't.. know.. 🤷♀ 😏

The wallet-chain industry quadrupled after this guy had one in his video.

H Street!
Young Bam 2:44
Is that bam behind Hensley drinking water??
The video is cool but jfc the music. I'm into different things but this was grating.
Ska. Accordians. Hensley.
Aahh the days of Matt H when he set the style for street skating. ROB.W/TEAM STREET STYLE "SAN BERNADINO "
He is the reason I still wear a chain wallet to this day!
Must be awful when 10,000 people all want to look like you, skate like you, talk like you do, dress like you and...want to be YOU.
He took the pressure well, for so long, until he couldn't.
