Eastman Shrinkflation - Dreadnought showdown - E10D versus E3DE, which sounds best?

- Shocking discovery! My new Eastman dreadnought is smaller than my old E10D. But does it sound better? Did Dana Bourgeois make all the Eastman Dreads this much smaller? Can Eastman still say - hand on heart - these are 'true cannons'? Or are they really Grand Auditoriums in disguise?

I don’t know if it is the ovangkal, but this guitar has a really nice woody, earthy tone. The ovangkal grand auditorium I had also had that nice warm tone.
I am coming to the conclusion that my E3D is an exception being only 4 1/2 inches deep instead of 4 23/34, which is the published specs on all the Eastman dreads. I am actually quite happy to have this odd, off spec example as it sounds a bit different. It's not exactly a Grand Auditorium in disguise as I suggest in the video. The GAs have 4 1/4inch depth, so a bit shallower than this skinny E3D dread.
I said in this video that the E10D braces were replaced. They were actually reglued by the luthier, not replaced. He also heated the top and took the belly out of it. And reglued the bridge. The guitar was really tight for a couple of years after that. It had never quite sounded the same. The bridge then lifted again and I reglued it myself.
Just received my E3D today and it also has the smaller body. I could really feel the difference compared to my E2D-CD.
Hi Jason, what are your thoughts having had the two guitars to compare for a month? Do you like that extra bottom end I presume the E2D produces? Is there much difference in tone? What is the cedar like?
The 10 has a beautiful high definition compression and with amazing overtones, the 3 has a more rugged quality that I'd almost say sounds like it has shorter scale length. I wonder if that is shrunken as well? Have you measured the scale length on the 3?
Hold my beer! … I just put the two guitars together string to string and they are same scale length. So they didn’t shrink that! After my initial surprise at discovering that the E3D was smaller, I am appreciating the more balanced tonal response of the smaller body. It is still improving as the weeks and months pass. It does feel a bit more delicate if you come straight from the E10D.

rosewood vs ovangkol... puffffff they both sound great... but I don't know if the price difference makes the guitar better not only for back and sides but also for playability, comfort, ease of use of high strings for solos ect.....
what do you think? Is it played just as comfortable in the upper part or the entire fingerboard of e10 and e3? or is it better to touch e10?
Hi Adrian, apart from the ovangkal vs rosewood, the E8 has gloss finish, a volute on the neck and nicer binding. It’s a more high end model. Plus the deeper, wider body. I would go for that if you can afford it 🤩 As for playability that depends on how well the guitar is set up, any of the models could play just as well up the neck. The OM has same appointments as the dreads. They have a shorter scale. The Grand Auditoriums are in between size but full scale. Just depends if you like the power and bass of the dreadnought! As for playability of my E3D and E10D they are about the same to play up the neck. E10 is more bass and also more percussive and bright from the Adirondack top.

e8om I really like all guitars. Maybe you'll hear the Dreadnought playing alone or accompanying a voice, it's a good option, although Jhon Mayer doesn't really need it, just the one with his full om.
What does volute on the neck and nicer binding mean? It's a more high end model?
Hi Adrian the volute is the diamond shaped wood carved on the neck/headstock join. I show it at 5:20 on the video. The binding is the edging they put around the edge of the top. Actually the binding is a nice herringbone on the E3DE, classy!
Hey, nice playing! What strings are you using? Sounds a bit dead in a nice way. That e10d sounds great. I have an e1d that i am really happy with but I wonder if I should have gone with the 10... 😉
Hi Daniel, I use D’addario ej16 strings, 12 to 53. I am used to them. I like it when they are not so new and lose that zingyness. I think they were at that stage when I made this video.
I would say generally an E10D would sound a bit better than an E1D as they are up a few rungs on the Eastman product range as reflected in the price. But sitka top generally sounds a bit warmer, Adirondack more cutting and crisp. And there would be exceptions, such as how amazing this E1D sounds! ruclips.net/video/LP_KjiIBiBM/видео.html
@@turrafirmaguitarchannel yeah, that e1sounds good indeed. I use d'addario xt s 12-53. They tend to sound best after a week or so. I wish there were more guitar stores around here. I can only get eastmans by ordering online.
I went and ordered an E10D ... It just sounds so damn good. 🙂
Eastman has always had an issue with consistency of specs. They still do. But Dana Bourgeois has nothing to do with the E3D.
No direct involvement but the Eastman luthiers are eyeballing the Bourgeois tops and bracing I am sure! And the Million dollar question: what are the dimensions of the Touchstone dreads!

@@turrafirmaguitarchannel The Touchstone dreads are small, unfortunately. Same goes for the new E40D-tc. I measured the body of the tc in comparison to the bodies of two older non-tc E40D guitars I have, and the new tc is significantly smaller. I wrote down the measurements but don't have them in front of me now; iirc the body of the new tc is about 1/2" less in all dimensions---shorter, narrower (especially in the upper bout), and shallower. The sound of the new tc was also significantly smaller. I had expected a better version of the old E40D sound, but it sounds different (more focused and refined, like a Bourgeois) and smaller.
@@greenfinmusic5142 well that is interesting to hear. I guess that means the ‘focussed sound’ of the Bourgeois is a euphemism for smaller body. If that is same for Touchstone I would not be so keen on them. I play at the occasional Irish session and every bit of bass is needed in a noisy pub. Thanks for the info.
