    General Taylor - Lyrics
General Taylor he's dead and he's gone!
Walk him along, Johnny, carry him along!
General Taylor he's long dead and gone!
Carry him to his burying ground.
To me way, hey, Storm and Blow!
Walk him along, Johnny, carry him along!
To me way, hey, Storm and Blow!
Carry him to his burying ground!
We'll dig his grave with a silver spade!
His shroud of the finest silk will be made.
We'll lower him down with a silver chain.
On every link . his name is engraved.
Taylor lies low in a salt sea bed.
Our hearts, they are sore and our eyes, they are red!

@@SeanDagher Cool. The line I'm most familiar with sounds something like "aweigh-hey-a Stormy", which I think was a nickname for Taylor, maybe? Either way, thank you as always!

    • @JDrevolver66
      @JDrevolver66 3 года назад +1

@@Erics_RUclips_Handle Stormy seems to be Stormalong being conflated with Taylor. Another variation used in Great Big Sea's version (learnt from Fergus O'Byrne of Ryan's Fancy), sounds like "Tell me where (are)ya, Stormy?". It must've been fifty years between the song's origin and it being collected in Somerset by Cecil Sharp; presumably plenty of time for the folk process to do its thing and produce the story mixing Taylor with elements of the Stormalong tale.

Hi Mr. Dagher, I recently discovered your RUclips channel thanks to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, that game changed my life, I know it sounds silly but it did. The Story, the characters and the songs. Leave her Johnny is my favorite song because it reminds me of those people who are not longer with you. Tomorrow is my birthday and I am going to play Leave Her Johnny in my guitar, with my family. Thanks Mr. Dagher for everything you have done, and you’re voice is amazing, God bless you.

Taylor's president being forgotten is actually kind of suprising. A strong personality, he was a slave owner but also increasingly willing to curb it's spread later in life, many pinned their hopes of preserving the Union on him when he was elected. He pushed for a compromise in 1850, and his death is often seen as the end of any real hope of compromise on the slavery issue, making secession and civil war inevitable. I've always seen him as one of the more melancholic what ifs, if he had lived another 6 years, could the civil war have been put off for another generation? And would this have allowed a peaceful resolution (slavery seemed to be beginning to die out) or would it make things worse? (new slave states in the south west, and new weapons making for more carnage)

Isn't it great that there are multiple versions? That way, everyone can choose their own personal favourite. It's a great feature of all folk music and of shanties in particular.
