I live in Pembrokeshire and saw him when he was in Tenby, he was a local celebrity and much loved by all. Sadly I've been reading he isn't so welcome in the Isles of Scilly. Guess what! He doesn't understand that boats are not somewhere for him to rest, he's not deliberately doing the damage, unlike us humans who are destroying the natural habitat of all his family still in the Arctic. The attitude of people in the Scilly Islands is sad and selfish. Why doesn't someone build a pontoon away from where people can't disturb him, he was really happy on the RNLI slipway at Tenby. Give him his own little place to snooze so he won't try to get on people's boats as he's clearly happy in the Scilly Islands for the moment.
They have built him a personal pontoon and thankfully he’s now starting to use it. You need to think back that he was scared off the lifeboat ramp at Tenby with brooms and air horns. They don’t hate him in the Scillies, most love seeing him, but he has been creating havoc with the locals who use boats as we do cars and has destroyed by sinking at least one persons livelihood(hope insurance covers Walrus damage). He’s also damaged many others and loved sleeping on their Ambulance boat which is obviously essential like Tenby’s RNLI station.
@@berniecoles2337 That's good to hear, but, we need to remember he isn't doing what he is doing out of malice, unlike humans who damage private and life saving property on a regular basis. Humans do have a nasty habit of being intolerant to animals who affect their livelihood, farmers come to mind and look how that is turning out, loss of habit, unnecessary badger culls and so on. Wally will realise the pontoon is a safe space to have a snooze undisturbed (I hope he is left alone), there were two slipways in Tenby, the new lifeboat station and the old one which is now a private residence, unfortunately the old slipway would have not allowed Wally any safety because it was easily accessible on foot to people. So I would suggest people watch more documentaries on walruses, there was an excellent one on BBC2 a few months ago, before Wally even appeared in Tenby and learn a wee bit more about these lovely animals. And if the insurance company won't replace the boat, and why not? Then start a GoFundMe for the chap, if people will contribute £38k to a German lass who was upset at Germany losing in the Euros they will surely help someone in this situation.
@@kiskaloo6843 Wally preferred the new slipway at Tenby as there wasn’t enough depth of water for him to use the old one at all states of the tide. Btw the old lifeboat station’s conversion was covered on an episode of Channel 4’s Grand designs and is well worth a watch.
He’s back here in west cork Ireland now, we have 17 different pontoons for him to rest on… they have taken his ‘scent’ using a towel and have rubbed it onto the pontoons to encourage him up onto them… as he moves around the coast the pontoons can also be moved. He’s not being hounded and the seal and wildlife conservation are checking on him. Hopefully he will start heading north now
Tenby’s Wally has become quite a celebrity on his summer tour, I hope he eventually finds his way home to the Arctic. When he first arrived at Tenby he was very underweight, but soon fattened himself up before heading off on his continental tour. At least now that he’s in the Scillies he’s heading in the right direction since coming from Spain. He may cause damage, but what price do you pay for everlasting memories and great tales to tell.

I did a search on Wally to see what he was up to and it seems he caused a lot of mischief and damage! Did anyone ever attach a gps tracker to him to see what he’s up to these days? Or if he’s gotten his captain’s license yet? 👨🏼✈️🧜♀️😂🚣🏽🚢⛴🛳🛥🚤🛶
