  • Today we took another boat with the St Mary's Boatmen's Association across to the Isles of Scilly island of Tresco. This was the island I was most excited to visit when planning the trip, mostly due to the stunning Tresco Abbey Garden (as I love a good garden to wander through and gawp at), but we quickly discovered that the island has much more to offer than just Tresco Gardens. As a cruise ship's passengers were visiting in the morning, we chose to save the gardens for the afternoon and instead explored the island on foot, making our way up to the Ruin Beach Café Tresco (Ruin Beach Cafe Tresco?), where we ate a delicious lunch consisting of fresh, locally caught seafood, sat amongst a ruined building, overlooking a white sand beach. After lunch, we kept exploring on foot, passing the popular The New Inn Tresco (we were very torn on where to eat lunch!) and we came across the golden pheasant bird, known to reside on Tresco island though truth be told, I thought we'd need to be in the paid for gardens to see it, but no, it was just wandering along the public footpath! Once we got into the Tresco Garden, we were greeted by red squirrels - a wild animal I've been eager to spot for years with little success, yet in Tresco Abbey Garden there were LOADS! We had a nosey around the Valhalla museum - home to a number of figureheads from old ships that became shipwrecked around the Scilly Isles and generally took in the sub tropical paradise, despite our visit to the Isles of Scilly in SPRING! After leaving the gardens, we walked by Apple Tree Bay, yet another one of the Isles of Scilly beaches with white sand and turquoise waters. We overshot Old Grimsby Quay where the ferry was due to pick us up so we could have a quick peek at Braiden Rock - with its steps cut out so secret agents during the second world war could board onto Bretton fishing boats, so they could infiltrate into France. If visiting on an Isles of Scilly holiday and you enjoy gardens, Tresco Island is a must visit!

    We loved Tresco at at the end of our trip when locals asked us what our favourite island was, we weren't prepared with an answer, but said Tresco was up there and people seemed shocked. Do you have a favourite island?

    Hi! Another lovely video showing Tresco in all its glory. Probably my 2nd favourite island after St Mary's. There used to be a landing charge for landing on Tresco, with a chap waiting on the quay to nab anyone coming off the boat, so one time many years ago during a low spring tide I took the boat to Bryher and waded across; it was about knee deep if I remember right. The South of Tresco has the most amazing tropical-looking beaches and of course the amazing gardens, but the north is rugged granite and heather moorland. Cromwell's Tower & King Charles' Castle are worth a visit, and it's worth searching for Piper's Hole, a cave, in the north of the island. Loved the red squirrels and the golden pheasant! Many thanks.

      I LOVE stries like yours of wading across from Tresco to avoid the arrival fee. It feels so strange that they used to charge - I'd have thought they'd want the footfall as people would go on to then spend money. Whilst we spent more money on St. Mary's in total (mostly because we stayed there so spent more time there) I'd say Tresco was where we spent the next biggest amount of money! The north of the island does sound lovely with the tower and castle, but equally so do the beaches. Maybe next time around I spend a morning doing 1 and an afternoon doing the other. Like you, I adored the squirrels and pheasant, so unique!

    What a pretty little island, looks like the weather was perfecting for taking a walk around and enjoying the scenery. You were right about the standards and appearance being very consistent due to it being managed by one group, they clearly look after the place and put a lot of effort into keeping it nice. Well done with the video of the red squirrels, you did a great job of catching them in their element. Ha had to laugh at the mini mail van - very stylish. Definitely cutting it fine but if you know the boats run exactly to their schedule then you can afford to push it and use every last minute you've got!

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  Год назад +1

      I think Tresco was one of the first places to get one of those electric Royal Mail vans. I'd tried to get footage of it travelling earlier in the day but got a terrible shot as it drove around the corner after it took so long for me to get the camera switched on, so was happy to find it sat by the quay towards the end of the day.
      From the quay, we set a timer to time exactly how long it took us to walk to the 'steps' and worked out how long we'd then have before needing to head back. We did run a little to ensure we were back in time! I could be wrong, but I get the impression the boat captains scan the coastal paths and if they can see people rushing in their direction, I bet they wait... but we were there a couple of minutes early!

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  Год назад

      I agree about the price, but my thought process was that unlike the mainland that will get the numbers, allowing for the price to be lower, the Islands just don't get as many visitors and so in order for it to stay in operation, they need to charge more. The offset is that you get the places a bit more to yourself... but I couldn't afford to do all my trips quite as lavishly as this one. I'll do an itinerary and cost breakdown video in a couple of weeks and we recognise the trip wasn't a cheap one!

      Based on the reactions of locals when they asked us which island was our favourite and we gushed about our time on St. Martin's, St. Mary's and Tresco, everyone met our 'Tresco' answer with surprise, so I'd guessed that it was maybe on others don't like quite as much as the others. Next time we get out to the Isles of Scilly, I'll be sure to hit up that walk, the views sound amazing and I hope that on a future visit St. Helens or Tean may have a boat go them as when we visited, the uninhabited island that had a scheduled boat was to Samson. Definitely not complaining as I loved it, but would be nice to be able to shake things up a little. Really want to see the 'Pest House' as stories like ones that come from there ring so much closer to home after we've gone through our own version of quarantine with COVID!

    Is it possible to go to Tresco if you do a day trip?

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  Год назад +1

      If you were to fly from Penzance via helicopter, you can land directly on Tresco giving you as much time on the island as we got taking the boat across from St. Mary's if you get the first one of the morning and last one at the end of the day. I believe it's possible with the slowest method of taking the Scillonian, but you'd only have a few hours. On Saturday's in the peak season, I believe the Scillonian sails twice a day, so if you go on a Saturday, you can arrive much earlier and depart at 5.00pm. The Scillonian goes to St. Mary's though meaning you'd then have to catch another boat tot Tresco. A good way to gain a little time and save a little money is to fly one way and sail the other.

      @When Adventure Knox coraline is a film about a girl who finds another world that is more beautiful and interesting than the one she inhabits. It has beautiful gardens and great food and interesting people but it is inhabited by button eyed doppelgangers of the people she knows in the real world. they tell her she can stay forever, but she has to sew buttons over her eyes and give her eyes to her other mother who is trying to steal her soul.
      She defeats the other mother and is reunited with her real family.

    13:27. Augustus Smith? Or Dorrien-Smith? Or perhaps even a combo; Augustus Dorrien-Smith?
    My fave island? Well, being extremely biased as we had 2 wonderful family holidays in 1962 & 3 on St Martins,
    I would say.................................you've guessed correctly!
    As is often the case in natural surroundings, the location is not always as so important as the weather.
    Also, it depends on whether you are going to stay on an island, or just visit for a day-trip. St Agnes is the longest boat ride, (if you love or loathe boat rides packed with tourists), to Tresco is probably the shortest. Tresco is famous & hence popular, but Hell's bay on Bryher would be my top spot for a real Atlantic storm! St Aggie good for bird-watching & view of the Bishop.
    For a stay, the "saints" are probably the best; Mary & Martin.
    For foodie freaks like you 2 (!), I can't comment, being a 70 year old foodie ignoramus. (where are my baked beans on toast?)
    The unidentified white fish you ate might have been a deep sea sole or plaice? Just guessing..............

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  Год назад

      I really loved St. Martin's and would certainly consider staying on that island on a future trip if there was availability, so can understand why you love it so much! I agree with your comment about the weather. We got incredibly lucky on this trip as we appreciate in May Half Term it's not always going to be perfect! I felt like Bryher on our visit was able to give the St. Agnes boat time a run for its money as the tide was so low, we had to travel at a snails pace, and it wasn't helped by some people mistakenly getting on our boat instead of the one to Tresco so we detoured to let them off. But for the longest boat ride, the award has to go to Samson as we had to sail around the whole thing due to low tides. It makes me wonder how bad it gets when the tide's so low that you can walk between Bryher and Tresco!

    You didn't mention Cromwell's castle or King Charles' castle. 60 years ago as a 10 year old, I imagined a gun fight between the Cavaliers & Roundheads at this location, (typical boy - yawn!), & subsequently found a lead shot which I was convinced was a relic from that time! Your point about 'Prince' Charles inheriting Tresco when he became Duke of Cornwall is interesting as it now has me wondering about whether this is still the case after he's become King. We took this trip to the Isles of Scilly over the Queen's Jubilee weekend, and it's very surreal that in the time it's taken me to edit these and get them onto RUclips, so much has changed within our monarchy! Funny that you mention the primary school on the island as we learnt later in our trip that children who live on the island of Bryher (just across the water from Tresco) have to take a boat to Tresco island each day as they don't have a primary school! @When Adventure Knox it's okay if you go there for a day trip but if you are working there the drug dealers threaten to poison you with the trees if you go to the management or the police telling them they are dealing hash to the islands staff through the premesis.
      When you work there as a waitress as I did you spend all day in the pub so the only other place to socialise after you finish work is the shed where they are likely to try and dip your drink with it.
      There are trees in the abbey gardens but alsotree I know of in the back of one of the management's cottages in the middle of an apple orchard where they can't be seen harvesting from it.
      A holiday worker, josh clayton went missing from a party at the shed in 2015. The inquest said he had an accident and drowned. But he was found ten days after the search and rescue went away in an area they had already searched by helicopter in the sea. If he had an accident on the beach he would have washed in because of the tides. His body was found on the uninhabited of tean.

      @When Adventure Knox as a former employee of tresco island I shouldn't say too much more about the body they hid and dumped in the sea otherwise I will have the drug traffickers following me hacking into my internet and threatening to murder me again. Then again the inquest into the holiday workers death is over now, where despite no evidence that he drowned or had an accident they concluded that he drowned and had an accident. No more police funding for a fresh enquiry.
