Only in a story like Dragon Age could you make something like this work: The man you love is in fact the entity you have been taught to hate and fear your whole life. Really compelling stuff.
I'm not sure why but the silence that Solas gives Lavellan when she says "I would have you *trust* me!" is so heartbreaking. He's holding back, it feels like, from saying that he DOES trust Lavellan, but he knew if he'd told her the truth, she would have been able to stop him. Damn. Solas's backstory is just...too much sometimes.
+Andie Koofins This romance is so beautifully written and Solas's facial animations in this and other romance scenes are amazing. So much is said without being said directly, it's painful.
Part of me would say Solas' romance may be the most CANONICAL. Just this sheer emotion you see in him and the Inquisitor, and the fact there's never a genuine moment that the two bed one another. Never vow together, and even leaves the elven inquisitor behind... This romance is the most impactful as it ends with a strong purpose. That she will not give up on him and do what she must to save him, or be with him. There's so much emotional ties that the other romance branches simply lack. Even the Iron Bull's betrayal doesn't match this situation where Solas' romance culminates.
Travis Gibbons completely agree, though I didn’t have Bull betray me in the end. I have been purposefully avoiding this dlc with my Solas romance, but I went through it with my Bull romance, so I made sure he wouldn’t betray me cuz that would just suck too much on top of everything else
Solas' face tells so much in that moment. You can see his thoughts go from anger and disbelief (How can you tell me you would have understood? With everything the Dalish believe me to be!) Then consideration (Lavellan has always been unique among all others. She doesn't let her people's beliefs define her own, she wouldn't behave the way they do) And then horrible realization (I could have told her. She would have accepted.) But now the damage is done, and he must proceed with his plan regardless.
The irony is that even as misguided the dalish are about their culture the one thing they did get right was solas.is everything they say him to be down to a tee
My favorite thing about Solas is the way he talks. Fucking poetry. Every single sentence weighed and measured against his immortal past. Bravo to the writers.

Ya know, this is ridiculous. Using simple phrases for complex characters is not good writing. It's what dumb people do when they want to sound smart but aren't, so can't. I think you are all brainwashed to hang on anything that is said with a progressive Lilt? Rhythmic and Hypnotic tones seem to deeply affect progressives? If you add in an inflection that screams "I'm an idiot, please victimize me!" they just eat from the palm of your hand? Trash Character in the trashiest of a mediocre series. 4/10. Flemeth was better, and she was already cliche.

I know riight?! The music was so on spot for the scene. It definitely added to the emotional weight of the moment! I remember being emotionally overwhelmed at this stage. It was awesome! T.T

I was playing the DLC as a human mage who had a mostly neutral relationship with Solas, and then I thought "This DLC had some serious drama, but you know what would give it some more drama? Playing as an elf and romancing Solas." Started a new game immediately just for that, and... I guess I could say it was my best and most emotianlly destroying playthrough ever. Also, now I can never romance anyone else ever again.
I've spoiled myself through the whole fucking dlc because I had to see this. This breaks my heart everytime I see it. Solas caring for our Lavellan and loving her to the end of time but nevertheless has to fulfill his duty. Even if it hurts. The voice acting of Solas saying "my love" rips me in thousand peaces everytime I hear it. It so powerful and heartbroken, I just can't. Going full fangirly right there.
I'm a guy and played with my Qunari warrior guy and while that rogue of a dwarf is an awesome partner in crime, I could not for the love of anything give up Solas for the BFF role. He's such a bro throughout the whole game, giving advice, helping and all sorts of nice things. Best vibe ever! Since I started DA franchise in reverse starting with DAI, he was the most helpful guy around and easy to talk to. Trespassers DLC was a total 10/10 for me and was epic. I told my buddy that I'd not give up on him and the way he called me "my friend" was just as heart wrenching as this scene here... bloody awesome, but as a bro I will most definitely replay as an Elven female mage cause my man Solas deserves some love. Worth it! FYI My Qunari dude is the best wingman ever! Deciding to erase his own existence to get his buddy a girlfriend! XD
Everyone always talks about the Solas romance and reveal stuff in Trespasser and yes I also romanced him in my playthrough. Yet the thing in Trespasser that really blew my mind was all of the *LORE* information overload that was going on in my head. Learning the true history of the Evanuris and the Fade changes EVERYTHING. Your whole perception is turned inside out and now everything makes sense. From the Black City and Darkspawn, to the Titans and stone shapers, to the existence of demons and the fade itself, and so much more. They wrote Solas as a sympathetic villian and he's not wrong in his perception of what needs to be done to return things to the way they were. That's why I'm so impatiently excited for DA4. At least in the hopes that the story and characters can maintain quality over all else, be the ending tragic, or not.
Yes! I started with Inquisition because someone got me it as a gift, and it's been really odd playing through the first two games with the perspective I have from the third. I've definitely reacted differently to them than I would have otherwise. Stuff like the Fade, demons/spirits, the fear of blood magic, and literally all the theology which I would normally have just added to my catalogue of completely factual lore and reacted to as intended suddenly has all these implications I know wouldn't otherwise be there and it's really strange to think about.
I just realized something even though I've watched this a million times... I mean I was paying extra attention to Solas' face expressions and body language because damn he's like an open book sometimes where Lavellan is concerned-- did anyone notice his body language towards the end? Like, how he walked away? When we first see him, his posture is ah.. Very princely like, or almost "royal" in a sense but as the scene goes on, he loses more of his composure. When he walks away, it's just goddamn HEARTBREAKING because his body language is screaming "I WANT to stay but I can't but fuck i love her BUT I CAnT--" and his face--- Shit I'm dead Bioware fucking SLAYED me with this romance
Same. i have loved watching his arc, just like when he wants there to be some horrible reason he cant be in love in with her when he confronts her on the balcony 'did the anchor change you at all?' kind of felt like he was saying 'this cant be real, i must have been manipulated, she must have been this horrible creature before the anchor etc' lol
That "Well done" encompasses Solas's character really well tbh, the sadness and wistful affection towards something he can't quite have but adores nevertheless. Damn man, Gareth David and Weekes weren't playing when they wrote and acted this out.
The best thing about the Solas Romance is that he makes you feel part of something that's much bigger than you, the inquisition or the world. He makes you a part of the history of the world, HIS history. I Always love it when another character can do that in a game: explore something that's bigger than politics, the present or even all that you believe in.
Sandro Swen Solas is the reason my inquisitor started to genuinely support the inquisition and tried to help people. In the beginning she hated having to be basically imprisoned in Haven, surrounded by so many *shemlen* (after she awakens in Haven I even went as far as searching for five minutes to find a path NOT leading past all those people calling her Herald), but Solas made her see that needed to fight together to stop the breach and after some time she came to care about the people, not what race they were... Which made his reveal of basically just caring about the elvhen so much more painful and outright destroyed a lot of the anti-racism progress she made (although she always tried to achieve the best outcome for the elves)
@@deepseafish257 See thats why i love this game you can give your person his/her own backstory mine was the one i recently played was a human male and well he grow up in a rough family and always wanted to help anyone around him. When he woke up in Haven and was confused what he had done to be in chains, but after being told what happened he jumped to the chance to help with his new power. He helped anyone around him and being told that he could not help everyone by Solas he felt hatred for him unlike anything he had felt so Solas and him never got along. but after the town of Haven was destroyed he made countless attempts to repair their friendship back but it just made it worse even so far as my character punching him in the face after a long argument and at the end of the game after Solas left he felt he was the one who made him leave
Ohh... the way her accusations left him momentarily speechless was amazing. It's like he knows there's no defense. Thank you for exploring all the facets of the game and then sharing your videos! I'll have to make a point of finding all the clues to Fen'harel's identity on my next playthrough.
I just LOVE the option of the inquisitor having solved it on their own. It confirms everything that Solas came to realize about you and everything that made him doubt his plan. She’s so intelligent and thoughtful and perceptive enough to solve this huge mystery about him he’s just like “dam that’s my girl”
Me after defeating Corypheus: "Well that was rather anti-climactic. We defeated the big bad, I suppose it's all over now?" Meanwhile thousands of miles away Solas: "We're doing a sequel!"
Late comment but I mean the world he created with the veil I think demonstrates this. He might have good reasons as well but his hatred for the Evanuris is ... intense. He destroyed the world to torment them, at least partially.
@@bsm1171 he destroyed the world by accident, trying to punish them for their attempt to enslave the elves and for murdering Mythal. Basically he fucked up real hard and can't admit it's too late to fix it (his name means Pride, after all.)
@@stephlrideout Actually, (and I could be wrong) it wasn't just because of what they did to Mythal. I'm not sure why this dialogue was written like that because with further digging it sounds like it was hugely because the evanuris were trying to fight the titans for dominion over literally shaping the world and destroying it with their egos, which is why he said every alternative was worse and they would have destroyed the world. I think Mythal was just his breaking point because she was the only one not letting godhood worship go to her head. He didn't destroy the world, that was the point, but he had to change it to keep it from being destroyed. Also, I didn't see her arm disintegrating but I'm assuming he killed it rather painlessly so it obviously wouldn't spread and kill her. She stops screaming after all. I picture Cassandra or something cutting it off for you when you leave.

I love his line after she yells at him, becuase the way he refers to the elvhen religion as mythology is just so...Solas, the nerd mage hobo that joined the inquisition, and not evil potentially genocidal god-sorry-not-a-god-guy. Also, the dynamic, the way she resents that he didn't trust her with his identity, with the truth of it all and the tension just...softens, like he knows he is wrong, like he knows what kind of pain he has caused her; becuase after all, Lavellan loses everything, not only her love interest after the dlc.
Non-romanced Lavellan's would never be able to get in his face while so aggressive. He'd cause the anchor to flare up and disable her. He disables his Vhenan with puppy-eyes.

OMG same bro XD but I actually have 2 different canons one for the dalish elves and the other for the city elves. In my head dalish version is like 'we have hidden from the world for too long now its time to show them who were the over rulers of this continent in the past' and the city elf option is like 'You might treat us like slaves but we are slowly coming for you to topple your rein'
As much as it breaks my heart to watch this, I can't stop myself from repeating the video. Its the most ominous, heart-breaking, and beautiful dialogue throughout the whole game!! I just kind of hope for a happy ending of some sort...
DA4 We help Solas lower the veil safely. DA5 We join Solas in the war against the false gods and end the blight forever as well. DA6 I don't know. Build a (snowman) woodman while singing maybe? Being elves and all. I demand My grey warden with his Morrigan and son + Solas and Lavellan with their kids to show up happy and old or something! :D
yes. i really wonder if the inquisitor will be present when its time to fight him, just because i want them to be together so bad. i could just see him falling to his knees before her trying to apologize and crying. but she just kneels with him and hugs him so tight. ugh i need this scene
I dont know why this hasn't been seen as the breakthrough in video game story telling, just like books cant do what comics do, games cant do what films can, but this is something that cant really be pulled off in a film, its a masterpiece
I wish they have this game slowly go into and you have your character back and he comes back but give you another God’s power to give you your and. Back and the anchor and whatever ending he either fights by your side or you stop him
+phoenix-force411 I disagree. Or more specifically: the Inquisitor fights for whatever you want your character to fight for. You can play the chauvinistic Dalish elf from the very start till the very end. Promising to fight at the head of the inquisition also for the sake of the elves, make Briala empress solely to strenghten the elves, denounce Andraste in every conversation, etc. Obviously, if you're a human or qunari you cannot, and it wouldn't make sense; but there is always the option. For such a playthrough it makes perfect sense to want to join Solas. "Destroy this human-ruled world, and bring back the power to the elves".
His elves aren't the elves "now." To him, every elf in Thedas is as worthless as any other race. He doesn't care for them. He wants to restore the world of the elves during "his" time since the elves during his time were different and not lost to ignorance nor other beliefs like the Qun or Andrastian. Also, the elves during him time were powerful like Mythal.
+Mariah Meadows Part of me strongly thinks that Solas will end up being a sympathetic villain in the next game. Which will break me, entirely, and I haven't even beaten the game with my Lavellan yet. Solas's character is still very mysterious, and tragic in a poetic sort of way. He's out to do the greater good but ends up screwing up the world anyway. Almost comparable a force of nature: raw, powerful, beautiful in a savage and almost frightening way, but leaves chaos and destruction in his wake.
+Mariah Meadows True, making him the ONLY villain in the world would be kinda...well, too expected. It wouldn't be boring in the slightest, but it's something everyone expects. If BioWare wants to keep throwing curve balls at us like they have with other 'villains' (Flemeth being Mythal, Anders starting the mage rebellion, Solas being...Solas), then I wouldn't be surprised if when the next game comes out, they're able to top the way they ended this game. I can totally see the Inquisitor making that sacrifice, though. One of the themes with these games is that of sacrifice: the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, and when that comes to a head, one story must end indefinitely in order for countless others to continue. In the Solasmance version of the game, he's complicated things quite a bit. He's trying to reset the world as it was, but the world as it is contains someone who probably still holds the key to his heart. That, I think, is what will break him. He knows that he has to keep the Inquisitor at bay, or else they'll sacrifice themselves. And that will tear him apart. Dang, long response. These games, man, they get me going.

I'm trying to watch a play through of DA VG and I have to keep taking breaks, coming back to clips like this. its also just occured to me I must have never played DAI as a Elf, 'MA HAREL LASA' bloody hell! that line has stirred more emotion in me than the 4 hours i'm into the VG lets play :(

I remember playing this years ago and doing Solas romance. It hurt me so bad I literally had my next playthrough end with me marrying someone just to ease the pain from this route 😂
i kid you not, when Solas leaves me in the trespasser and i saw the ending, i loaded my first save data and just romancing Cullen to mock Solas, but damn it i felt like using Cullen and all the time romancing him with a character that so in love with Solas hurt me so much. the whole time romancing Cullen i felt empty and kept thinking Solas and his kiss and his butt grabbing in that cave. I married Cullen and it stung me so bad that my solasmancer Lavellan cannot have him the way she had Cullen. he just leaves :( that damned egg been five year and im still pining goddamn

thank you---! that was so awesome! but still heart-wrenchingly sad...! still, when you choose the 'why did you lie to me'option, and the inquisitor uses the elvhen language, that is an utter stroke of genius!!
I'd bet my money there's a whole lot more foreshadowing than that in that quest... 👀 combining that quest, the particular type of spirit it's about and the different choices you can make with Cole's veiled comments about Solas (and probably all elves) being a spirit turned physical too and with the inquistor making a choice at the end about whether to stop him at all cost or try to save him... I think we can make some good educated guesses about his ending.
One of the rare time i felted betrayed in a video game and even more rare I understand him and I would of done what he did if I was him. Think about it, if you are the last human in a world that is not yours but was and you can bring every thing back.
The more I watch this clip, the more I'm inclined to believe that female Dalish elf Inquisitor with a Solas romance is canon... I liked Solas the moment I met him in the game (his character, personality, etc) very much the wise master with a mysterious background, and it turns out he's also cast in the fallen angel role. My Male Dalish elf mage usually agreed with him and respected him. I'm a straight guy btw, but I'm actually considering a fem-inquis dalish elf play through just for his romance... (what with the male options being kinda lame too...)
Grdsman Same here mate. Straight guy and all with a manly warrior qunari man char, but Solas was definitely my BFF in this game. As a good friend, I'm also totally going to be the best wingman to him and erase my qunari from the story and get my bald buddy a girlfriend! The sacrifice is real! XD
Compared to Main game, which is more light with a smidge of almost bouncing musicality, his voice in trespasser is so low and slow and weighted with duty and regret and grief. Gareth David Lloyd is so masterful at distinguishing Solas at two different points in his life and in two different scenarios. The first in the disguise of “humble helpful apostate” and the second as Solas truly is, a time-worn and solitary man with even less hope than his supposed convictions demand of him.

@@maddivoss3441 SAME HAHAHA legit make 2 save data just before locking the romance for solas then play through Trespasser. then get the most heart wrenching goodbye/breakup, then reload another save data out of spite before locking Solas romance and then reject him thus romancing Cullen for comfort lol. when i marry cullen with the same face, with the vallaslin still intact, i cried and felt empty in my heart because i did this to my lavellan, to cullen, to solas. thats the most empty feeling i got from supposed to be happy occasion, to these days i never touched that save data again. look what this game made me lmao, still yearning to redeem Solas since 2015

It's primarily this dialogue that my sister despises Solas, because Inquisitor is yelling at him in Elven, but he's answering in common. She took it as his not finding her worthy of it. I've actually played a Solavellan route so i get the emotional impact of each dialogue with a reader and writer perspective. I think they did a good job.
The first time I played DA: I had everything planned, I was going to be a Dalish Elf Mage and have romance with Cullen. But it took a conversation with Solas in Haven, and I changed my interest there and then, and never regretted it. So it was very ironic when this DLC came out, and revealed who Solas was, since I 99% fall for the evil one, plus I always imagined my Lavellan as an outcast of her own clan, since her favorite God was Fen'Harel.
same, my friend suggested me to play this game and she said beware of bald egg do not engage him. i was like cool okay, but then Haven happened and well there goes my heart. it's already 7 years since DA:I out but damn this romance still hurt me and haunt me
given that were unlikely to being playing as the inquisitor again im a little sad there wasn't an option for a dalish inquisitor to ally with solas pus its not like you have much of an inquisition to return to ether it gets disbanded or becomes subvevient to the exhalted council and is forced to reduce its military might
+John michael Patrick Weekes hinted that this may not be the last we hear of Solavellan if they get greenlit for the next game. As for disbanding; They go underground so that it will be harder to track their movements and will start looking for prospective allies whose actions Solas won't be able to predict. Considering how your companions are stuck in places with groups capable of ferreting out information, you may be very successful. For example, Dorian with his new group in Tevinter.
The shift of his facial expressions at 2:23 actually ruins me. Like he regrets once again not being honest with her. Realizing that she would've stood by him and helped him if he hadn't pushed her away. Shifting from his measured facade to a look of pure vulnerability UGH it breaks my heart

I’ve been replaying the game during this quarantine and I’ve realised there are many times where you can catch solas in a lie during the game and when you confront him he becomes really nervous. An example of this is right after WEWH quest when he says he “misses the intrigues of court” and so you can ask him “when were you at court” and he gets super nervous and says something like “err… oh right, in my journeys to the fade” and I’m there sitting like “I know you fen’harel bitch”
in the beginning when he grab your hand and close the rift is already questionable for me, i mean nobody knows about the rift and the mark in your left hand right, then he swooped down and just do the thing. its even worse when you can choose specialisation class. when you talk to the fade mage(?) this kind of magic is practically new and just a handful of mage manage to master it. and how in the hell is solas; which is his story; wandering mage and already mastering fade without any help or education at all😂 in my headcanon: Solas is too hasty to take his foci from Corypherus and joining Inquisitor, he just cant make a proper solid background and so when he reminisce we just caught up with it lolol
Vania Saragih yeah I found that suspicious too. Or how he says he doesn’t identify with (modern) elves yet most of his first interactions with Sera is like he’s trying to connect with her. Or his reaction to the wardens wanting to assassinate the old gods, everyone was worried about the demon army but he was deeply concerned about the old gods. I think once you play trespasser and replay the game you get this whole new perspective about him and his intentions. There’s this other conversation he has with Sera about Red Jenny in which he gives her some advice in how terrorist cells should work as if he had been part of a rebellious group before.

Yeah, his convo with Sera somehow downright weird with elves talk and something, I'm not into mumbo jumbo that Sera got old souls inside her, but that is weird. definitely never encounter Red Jenny convo with Solas and Sera, all I can remember is Sera being a dick and Solas being a prick lmao or maybe because I prefer Cole convo with Solas more than Sera-Solas. I don't remember about wardens and assassinating old gods, is it from the Descent DLC? that DLC is hard man, I don't remember anything beside darkspawn biting me in the ass.

When I brought DA:I one of the staff members from the game store I brought it from told me the trespasser dlc was only for PC, Xbox one and PS4 so i brought it on PS4 she told me to romance Solas because it was really good still haven't forgiven her for that, make me feel things will you how dare you.
I mean... it IS kinda the best romance. It also sets up the best STORY LINE for the next game, with all the angst. Man, that staff member be a savage though. XD

I did also have my romance in Dragon age 2 with Fenris as a female mage so maybe I just like difficult relationships lol.
I went to GameStop looking for games like my old fable series. The dude recommended Dragon Age Inquisition. I'd never heard of Dragon Age. The dude lied this is nothing like Fable it's so much better Fable isn't even in the same league and it was my favorite game series. Also, I went back and yelled at him for recommending the Solas romance. He laughed and said he was sorry.
They were effectively powerful enough for centuries, millennia, with no opposition except each other, that still calling them gods is very valid, as we must consider that Solas' POV is still his own and there's certainly things we can disagree with him on.
Being effectively Immortal and semi-all powerful for millinenia sort of fits the criteria of "Gods" in many respects. Trying to Downplay them is going to be a fatal mistake for everyone in Thedas. I garuntee it, these elves hold far more power than anything we've been shown in Dragon Age, they shaped the world itself in many ways. They were singlehandedly slaying Titans (massive mountain sized creatures of equal power) Solas is the one who Created the Veil, and we havent even seen what he's truly capable of, he has only a fraction of his full power and it was already more than enough to deal with the Quanari, the Inquisition, and Briala's organization. And he was just getting started. This Elvhen was known as a god for a reason. And once DA4 comes, everyone will see why the Elvhen were truly the greatest.
Dragon Age has always delivered; DA: I is no exception. Only here, the character that would be your enemy, is the same that would save you, guide you, even love you, and hate bringing about so much pain to someone that he had grown to respect and love. That, combined with a score that gives off a triumphant yet somber tone, this may be one of the best delivered scenes in the trilogy of games, alongside one of the most developed ideas. Congrats DA: I, you’ve created a character that spanned the history of all the games that flows naturally, that I don’t want to kill at all costs, instead redeem and prove to him that he doesn’t have to be the villain. Not many works of fiction can bring so much up in my head, but DA constantly delivers, Inquisition proved itself with this.

I'm not sure why but the silence that Solas gives Lavellan when she says "I would have you *trust* me!" is so heartbreaking. He's holding back, it feels like, from saying that he DOES trust Lavellan, but he knew if he'd told her the truth, she would have been able to stop him. Damn. Solas's backstory is just...too much sometimes.

Part of me would say Solas' romance may be the most CANONICAL. Just this sheer emotion you see in him and the Inquisitor, and the fact there's never a genuine moment that the two bed one another. Never vow together, and even leaves the elven inquisitor behind... This romance is the most impactful as it ends with a strong purpose. That she will not give up on him and do what she must to save him, or be with him.
There's so much emotional ties that the other romance branches simply lack. Even the Iron Bull's betrayal doesn't match this situation where Solas' romance culminates.

And then horrible realization (I could have told her. She would have accepted.)
But now the damage is done, and he must proceed with his plan regardless.

Also, now I can never romance anyone else ever again.
I've spoiled myself through the whole fucking dlc because I had to see this. This breaks my heart everytime I see it. Solas caring for our Lavellan and loving her to the end of time but nevertheless has to fulfill his duty. Even if it hurts. The voice acting of Solas saying "my love" rips me in thousand peaces everytime I hear it. It so powerful and heartbroken, I just can't. Going full fangirly right there.
I'm a guy and played with my Qunari warrior guy and while that rogue of a dwarf is an awesome partner in crime, I could not for the love of anything give up Solas for the BFF role. He's such a bro throughout the whole game, giving advice, helping and all sorts of nice things. Best vibe ever!
Since I started DA franchise in reverse starting with DAI, he was the most helpful guy around and easy to talk to. Trespassers DLC was a total 10/10 for me and was epic. I told my buddy that I'd not give up on him and the way he called me "my friend" was just as heart wrenching as this scene here... bloody awesome, but as a bro I will most definitely replay as an Elven female mage cause my man Solas deserves some love. Worth it!
FYI My Qunari dude is the best wingman ever! Deciding to erase his own existence to get his buddy a girlfriend! XD
Everyone always talks about the Solas romance and reveal stuff in Trespasser and yes I also romanced him in my playthrough. Yet the thing in Trespasser that really blew my mind was all of the *LORE* information overload that was going on in my head. Learning the true history of the Evanuris and the Fade changes EVERYTHING. Your whole perception is turned inside out and now everything makes sense. From the Black City and Darkspawn, to the Titans and stone shapers, to the existence of demons and the fade itself, and so much more. They wrote Solas as a sympathetic villian and he's not wrong in his perception of what needs to be done to return things to the way they were. That's why I'm so impatiently excited for DA4. At least in the hopes that the story and characters can maintain quality over all else, be the ending tragic, or not.
This! I really hope DA4 has multiple final endings, one of them siding with Solas to restore the elves.
Yes! I started with Inquisition because someone got me it as a gift, and it's been really odd playing through the first two games with the perspective I have from the third. I've definitely reacted differently to them than I would have otherwise.
Stuff like the Fade, demons/spirits, the fear of blood magic, and literally all the theology which I would normally have just added to my catalogue of completely factual lore and reacted to as intended suddenly has all these implications I know wouldn't otherwise be there and it's really strange to think about.

I just realized something even though I've watched this a million times... I mean I was paying extra attention to Solas' face expressions and body language because damn he's like an open book sometimes where Lavellan is concerned-- did anyone notice his body language towards the end? Like, how he walked away? When we first see him, his posture is ah.. Very princely like, or almost "royal" in a sense but as the scene goes on, he loses more of his composure. When he walks away, it's just goddamn HEARTBREAKING because his body language is screaming "I WANT to stay but I can't but fuck i love her BUT I CAnT--" and his face---

That "Well done" encompasses Solas's character really well tbh, the sadness and wistful affection towards something he can't quite have but adores nevertheless. Damn man, Gareth David and Weekes weren't playing when they wrote and acted this out.

The best thing about the Solas Romance is that he makes you feel part of something that's much bigger than you, the inquisition or the world. He makes you a part of the history of the world, HIS history.
I Always love it when another character can do that in a game: explore something that's bigger than politics, the present or even all that you believe in.
Sandro Swen Solas is the reason my inquisitor started to genuinely support the inquisition and tried to help people. In the beginning she hated having to be basically imprisoned in Haven, surrounded by so many *shemlen* (after she awakens in Haven I even went as far as searching for five minutes to find a path NOT leading past all those people calling her Herald), but Solas made her see that needed to fight together to stop the breach and after some time she came to care about the people, not what race they were... Which made his reveal of basically just caring about the elvhen so much more painful and outright destroyed a lot of the anti-racism progress she made (although she always tried to achieve the best outcome for the elves)

When he woke up in Haven and was confused what he had done to be in chains, but after being told what happened he jumped to the chance to help with his new power. He helped anyone around him and being told that he could not help everyone by Solas he felt hatred for him unlike anything he had felt so Solas and him never got along. but after the town of Haven was destroyed he made countless attempts to repair their friendship back but it just made it worse even so far as my character punching him in the face after a long argument and at the end of the game after Solas left he felt he was the one who made him leave

I just LOVE the option of the inquisitor having solved it on their own. It confirms everything that Solas came to realize about you and everything that made him doubt his plan. She’s so intelligent and thoughtful and perceptive enough to solve this huge mystery about him he’s just like “dam that’s my girl”

I'm not sure why this dialogue was written like that because with further digging it sounds like it was hugely because the evanuris were trying to fight the titans for dominion over literally shaping the world and destroying it with their egos, which is why he said every alternative was worse and they would have destroyed the world. I think Mythal was just his breaking point because she was the only one not letting godhood worship go to her head. He didn't destroy the world, that was the point, but he had to change it to keep it from being destroyed. Also, I didn't see her arm disintegrating but I'm assuming he killed it rather painlessly so it obviously wouldn't spread and kill her. She stops screaming after all. I picture Cassandra or something cutting it off for you when you leave.

I love his line after she yells at him, becuase the way he refers to the elvhen religion as mythology is just so...Solas, the nerd mage hobo that joined the inquisition, and not evil potentially genocidal god-sorry-not-a-god-guy. Also, the dynamic, the way she resents that he didn't trust her with his identity, with the truth of it all and the tension just...softens, like he knows he is wrong, like he knows what kind of pain he has caused her; becuase after all, Lavellan loses everything, not only her love interest after the dlc.
Non-romanced Lavellan's would never be able to get in his face while so aggressive. He'd cause the anchor to flare up and disable her. He disables his Vhenan with puppy-eyes.

I dont know why this hasn't been seen as the breakthrough in video game story telling, just like books cant do what comics do, games cant do what films can, but this is something that cant really be pulled off in a film, its a masterpiece

It feels wrong to actually "agree" with him, in my opinion. It goes against everything the Inquisitor fought for.
+phoenix-force411 I disagree. Or more specifically: the Inquisitor fights for whatever you want your character to fight for. You can play the chauvinistic Dalish elf from the very start till the very end. Promising to fight at the head of the inquisition also for the sake of the elves, make Briala empress solely to strenghten the elves, denounce Andraste in every conversation, etc.
Obviously, if you're a human or qunari you cannot, and it wouldn't make sense; but there is always the option. For such a playthrough it makes perfect sense to want to join Solas. "Destroy this human-ruled world, and bring back the power to the elves".
His elves aren't the elves "now." To him, every elf in Thedas is as worthless as any other race. He doesn't care for them. He wants to restore the world of the elves during "his" time since the elves during his time were different and not lost to ignorance nor other beliefs like the Qun or Andrastian. Also, the elves during him time were powerful like Mythal.
+Mariah Meadows Part of me strongly thinks that Solas will end up being a sympathetic villain in the next game. Which will break me, entirely, and I haven't even beaten the game with my Lavellan yet. Solas's character is still very mysterious, and tragic in a poetic sort of way. He's out to do the greater good but ends up screwing up the world anyway. Almost comparable a force of nature: raw, powerful, beautiful in a savage and almost frightening way, but leaves chaos and destruction in his wake.
+Mariah Meadows True, making him the ONLY villain in the world would be kinda...well, too expected. It wouldn't be boring in the slightest, but it's something everyone expects. If BioWare wants to keep throwing curve balls at us like they have with other 'villains' (Flemeth being Mythal, Anders starting the mage rebellion, Solas being...Solas), then I wouldn't be surprised if when the next game comes out, they're able to top the way they ended this game.
I can totally see the Inquisitor making that sacrifice, though. One of the themes with these games is that of sacrifice: the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, and when that comes to a head, one story must end indefinitely in order for countless others to continue. In the Solasmance version of the game, he's complicated things quite a bit. He's trying to reset the world as it was, but the world as it is contains someone who probably still holds the key to his heart. That, I think, is what will break him. He knows that he has to keep the Inquisitor at bay, or else they'll sacrifice themselves. And that will tear him apart.

I remember playing this years ago and doing Solas romance. It hurt me so bad I literally had my next playthrough end with me marrying someone just to ease the pain from this route 😂
i kid you not, when Solas leaves me in the trespasser and i saw the ending, i loaded my first save data and just romancing Cullen to mock Solas, but damn it i felt like using Cullen and all the time romancing him with a character that so in love with Solas hurt me so much. the whole time romancing Cullen i felt empty and kept thinking Solas and his kiss and his butt grabbing in that cave. I married Cullen and it stung me so bad that my solasmancer Lavellan cannot have him the way she had Cullen. he just leaves :( that damned egg been five year and im still pining goddamn

I'd bet my money there's a whole lot more foreshadowing than that in that quest...
👀 combining that quest, the particular type of spirit it's about and the different choices you can make with Cole's veiled comments about Solas (and probably all elves) being a spirit turned physical too and with the inquistor making a choice at the end about whether to stop him at all cost or try to save him... I think we can make some good educated guesses about his ending.
One of the rare time i felted betrayed in a video game and even more rare I understand him and I would of done what he did if I was him. Think about it, if you are the last human in a world that is not yours but was and you can bring every thing back.
The more I watch this clip, the more I'm inclined to believe that female Dalish elf Inquisitor with a Solas romance is canon...
I liked Solas the moment I met him in the game (his character, personality, etc) very much the wise master with a mysterious background, and it turns out he's also cast in the fallen angel role.
My Male Dalish elf mage usually agreed with him and respected him.
I'm a straight guy btw, but I'm actually considering a fem-inquis dalish elf play through just for his romance... (what with the male options being kinda lame too...)

Compared to Main game, which is more light with a smidge of almost bouncing musicality, his voice in trespasser is so low and slow and weighted with duty and regret and grief. Gareth David Lloyd is so masterful at distinguishing Solas at two different points in his life and in two different scenarios. The first in the disguise of “humble helpful apostate” and the second as Solas truly is, a time-worn and solitary man with even less hope than his supposed convictions demand of him.
bioware should just let us play the inquisitor again i would gladly add another 40+ hours of this game if thats the case

when i marry cullen with the same face, with the vallaslin still intact, i cried and felt empty in my heart because i did this to my lavellan, to cullen, to solas. thats the most empty feeling i got from supposed to be happy occasion, to these days i never touched that save data again. look what this game made me lmao, still yearning to redeem Solas since 2015

It's primarily this dialogue that my sister despises Solas, because Inquisitor is yelling at him in Elven, but he's answering in common. She took it as his not finding her worthy of it. I've actually played a Solavellan route so i get the emotional impact of each dialogue with a reader and writer perspective. I think they did a good job.
The first time I played DA: I had everything planned, I was going to be a Dalish Elf Mage and have romance with Cullen.
But it took a conversation with Solas in Haven, and I changed my interest there and then, and never regretted it.
So it was very ironic when this DLC came out, and revealed who Solas was,
since I 99% fall for the evil one, plus I always imagined my Lavellan as an outcast of her own clan, since her favorite God was Fen'Harel.
same, my friend suggested me to play this game and she said beware of bald egg do not engage him. i was like cool okay, but then Haven happened and well there goes my heart. it's already 7 years since DA:I out but damn this romance still hurt me and haunt me
given that were unlikely to being playing as the inquisitor again im a little sad there wasn't an option for a dalish inquisitor to ally with solas pus its not like you have much of an inquisition to return to ether it gets disbanded or becomes subvevient to the exhalted council and is forced to reduce its military might
+John michael Patrick Weekes hinted that this may not be the last we hear of Solavellan if they get greenlit for the next game.
As for disbanding; They go underground so that it will be harder to track their movements and will start looking for prospective allies whose actions Solas won't be able to predict. Considering how your companions are stuck in places with groups capable of ferreting out information, you may be very successful. For example, Dorian with his new group in Tevinter.

Why do I keep watching these and hurting myself all over again.
I’ve been replaying the game during this quarantine and I’ve realised there are many times where you can catch solas in a lie during the game and when you confront him he becomes really nervous. An example of this is right after WEWH quest when he says he “misses the intrigues of court” and so you can ask him “when were you at court” and he gets super nervous and says something like “err… oh right, in my journeys to the fade” and I’m there sitting like “I know you fen’harel bitch”
in the beginning when he grab your hand and close the rift is already questionable for me, i mean nobody knows about the rift and the mark in your left hand right, then he swooped down and just do the thing.
its even worse when you can choose specialisation class. when you talk to the fade mage(?) this kind of magic is practically new and just a handful of mage manage to master it. and how in the hell is solas; which is his story; wandering mage and already mastering fade without any help or education at all😂
in my headcanon: Solas is too hasty to take his foci from Corypherus and joining Inquisitor, he just cant make a proper solid background and so when he reminisce we just caught up with it lolol
Vania Saragih yeah I found that suspicious too. Or how he says he doesn’t identify with (modern) elves yet most of his first interactions with Sera is like he’s trying to connect with her. Or his reaction to the wardens wanting to assassinate the old gods, everyone was worried about the demon army but he was deeply concerned about the old gods. I think once you play trespasser and replay the game you get this whole new perspective about him and his intentions. There’s this other conversation he has with Sera about Red Jenny in which he gives her some advice in how terrorist cells should work as if he had been part of a rebellious group before.

Yeah, his convo with Sera somehow downright weird with elves talk and something, I'm not into mumbo jumbo that Sera got old souls inside her, but that is weird. definitely never encounter Red Jenny convo with Solas and Sera, all I can remember is Sera being a dick and Solas being a prick lmao or maybe because I prefer Cole convo with Solas more than Sera-Solas.

It always bothered me how he would stand there and watch as you writhed in pain.
When I brought DA:I one of the staff members from the game store I brought it from told me the trespasser dlc was only for PC, Xbox one and PS4 so i brought it on PS4 she told me to romance Solas because it was really good still haven't forgiven her for that, make me feel things will you how dare you.
I mean... it IS kinda the best romance. It also sets up the best STORY LINE for the next game, with all the angst.

@@cussundriakneal9904 Oh I do agree and if Dragon Age 4 lets me play as my Inquisitor I will be continuing that story I will save The Dread Wolf even from himself if my character is willing to remove her own arm I pretty sure she will be happy to bring the world to it's knees to do so.
I did also have my romance in Dragon age 2 with Fenris as a female mage so maybe I just like difficult relationships lol.

I went to GameStop looking for games like my old fable series. The dude recommended Dragon Age Inquisition. I'd never heard of Dragon Age. The dude lied this is nothing like Fable it's so much better Fable isn't even in the same league and it was my favorite game series. Also, I went back and yelled at him for recommending the Solas romance. He laughed and said he was sorry.
So it was some Asura's wrath type of shit. Super powerful guys claiming to be gods were the original elven pantheon.

They were effectively powerful enough for centuries, millennia, with no opposition except each other, that still calling them gods is very valid, as we must consider that Solas' POV is still his own and there's certainly things we can disagree with him on.

Protoman I generally agree with Solas and I agree with him here, but his attitude colors his perception regarding this and many other things.
Being effectively Immortal and semi-all powerful for millinenia sort of fits the criteria of "Gods" in many respects.
Trying to Downplay them is going to be a fatal mistake for everyone in Thedas. I garuntee it, these elves hold far more power than anything we've been shown in Dragon Age, they shaped the world itself in many ways. They were singlehandedly slaying Titans (massive mountain sized creatures of equal power)
Solas is the one who Created the Veil, and we havent even seen what he's truly capable of, he has only a fraction of his full power and it was already more than enough to deal with the Quanari, the Inquisition, and Briala's organization. And he was just getting started. This Elvhen was known as a god for a reason. And once DA4 comes, everyone will see why the Elvhen were truly the greatest.

Dragon Age has always delivered; DA: I is no exception. Only here, the character that would be your enemy, is the same that would save you, guide you, even love you, and hate bringing about so much pain to someone that he had grown to respect and love. That, combined with a score that gives off a triumphant yet somber tone, this may be one of the best delivered scenes in the trilogy of games, alongside one of the most developed ideas. Congrats DA: I, you’ve created a character that spanned the history of all the games that flows naturally, that I don’t want to kill at all costs, instead redeem and prove to him that he doesn’t have to be the villain. Not many works of fiction can bring so much up in my head, but DA constantly delivers, Inquisition proved itself with this.
