It's probably because Brock is adding some more controversial views in his videos, which he didn't before. This will offend a lot of people, hence the negative comments. Personally, I appreciate you being more outspoken, Brock!
13:46 if you want to start working out at home just start with pullup bar and some resistance bands and use your body wight. you will not be a pro body builder but you will build good body and strength. and after you found you kept using the bar then you can get cheap dumbbell set with interchangeable weights that will last for many years after you, you can even get them used and get a cheap used bench, used them for a year if you didn't stop then and only then invest in better equipment depending on your needs
I think i agree with everything you've said here. The car always gets me. Most of my pals lease, and talk about all the benefits, all i see are the negatives which are that you're essentially throwing your money away. Fine if you don't have a mortgage (or other expensive commitments). Nice video once again Brock.
Went to the shelter, got a dog, walk him three times a day which improved my health and fitness. Plus contact with other dog owners and one contact led to a new job.
What I find funny about branded clothing is that if you NEED to wear the logo to show you can afford it, it's means you're around people that probably wear fakes, but most people can't tell the difference, so it just looks like you're wearing a fake too. Around here it's usually chavs that wear the overly branded stuff.
Good video, agree w you on knife sets being a waste, however those blocks are not good if the blade faces down like that, will help dull the blade over time. Magnetic wall rack or block w sideways slots are better. Also spot on with weddings, new phones, and new expensive cars. Used acuras and lexuses are great from a reputable seller. I got a 4 year old Acura in 2017, customized it to my needs and its still going strong.
Thank you Brock. This was eye opening and I agree with a lot with what you said. I was wondering if you can do a video on the opposite - like things people dont waste their money or things they that could put the best value with their money like investing, a good mattress, higher quality clothing, etc.

Also on cars. My family owned a shop and most parts are not proprietary, but if you use a Honda part in an Audi, then it voids your warranty. So you have to use the 200$ part over the 30$ part.
I'm surprised in your knife recommendations, you did not mention Zwilling (JA Henckels). Granted in the US, many garbage knives are sold under the name "Henckels Intl" that are made in China, but their top shelf Zwilling (Twin in German) are fantastic. I never used anything else when I was a professional cook in another life and still don't. I've heard they used to offer free resharpening for life with their knives (you did have to pay to ship your knives to them) but I am not sure if they still do that (I just sharpen mine at home). Only knives I think are needed are: chef's knife, santoku (I prefer it for thinly slicing vegetables), bread knife, smaller serrated knife (for cutting tomatoes without smashing them), a small paring knife, and maybe a bone knife if you are into filleting. And a good set of steak knives is always a must. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, NEVER PUT YOUR KNIVES IN THE DISHWASHER! ALWAYS WASH BY HAND!!!

Thanks to some of Brock’s videos a few years back I’ve saved a ton of money living the “capsule wardrobe” lifestyle. But then I spent it all on a nice boot collection soooo 😂
I'm still using an iPhone 8, and while I did finally get a newer vehicle, I had been driving an old Chevy Malibu for almost 13 years. I spent all of the money I saved from not having a car payment for so long on things like student loans or credit card debt, and now my wife and I pretty much only have a mortgage and car payment for debt. (Both of which we're on schedule to pay off well before the loans' projected lifetimes.) We're not extremely frugal by any means, but not wasting money on little stuff here and there has really allowed us to treat the kids to vacations and whatever else they need far more comfortably.
A lot of deliveries are junk food though with not many folks ordering fruits and vegetables, so perhaps it’s better kept for special occasions. It’s also healthier to go out for a walk and get some fresh air. Mind you, I don’t live in a polluted, crime-ridden, urban sprawl.
Brock, you’re being generous with water bottle company’s charging 30 times more than what you’d normally pay drinking water from the tap… truth is, those multiples are more in the hundredths and they literally use the same water. You can also purchase a water filter that’s easy to install to the cold water line of your sink, if you’re concerned about taste &/or “chemicals”.
I'm still using my iphone 5! Bought in 2013, ios will no longer update and I did change the battery 3 years ago (bought for 30 bucks on Amazon) but as of July 2025, the 3G network will no longer be supported so I'm being forced to buy a new phone. My car will be 20 years old in 2025 and at only 144 000 kms on it, it's still going strong!
You should really, really update your phone. Not being able to update to the latest IOS leaves you incredibly vulnerable to having your device hacked. Assuming you access your bank account and other valuable information with your phone, this would all be accessible to a hacker. Best practice is to make sure your phone’s software is supported by the company who made it still, that you have the most recent software updates, that any important apps are updated to their most current form, and restart your phone every evening. Tech security is not a place to cheap out.
I personally would NOT recommend holding on to an iPhone that doesn’t get software / security updates. We increasingly lead more digital lives and the consequences of using an unsafe device can be pretty pricey.
Idea for a sequel video would be things worth spending money on. I especially like things where you buy time and employ someone to do something you don't want to do, and your time is more valuable and they are better at... (cleaning person, laundry service, etc.).
I want a nice ring for my partner but I don’t expect a fancy wedding. Just a banquet hall rented and we do all the setup for the tables. Finally an affordable catering company. And we don’t know that much people to invite anyway, which will also make it cheaper.
Decent video Brock! I think you could sum up this video by puttin all the items in this list in 2 categories: useless services and marketing hype. In developed countries, our economies are mostly focused on services, especially in urban areas. Therefore, creating new services, which people don't really need, but are willing to pay for, is what we call 'economic growth'. Hence the meal delivery services, for example. Then you have the 'hype' category, which includes items that have little or no inherent value, but have culturally become status symbols - cars, diamonds, and let's be honest, also watches. Weddings, for instance, straddle the 2 categories. They are a set of services (event planning, makeup, tailoring etc.) which has also become inflated in price due to cultural hype. There is one category you listed here, though, that I genuinely believe is a good investment: bottled water. While tap water is safe to drink in certain areas, and filters can make it even safer, the quality of the water in terms of chemical composition is usually much lower than you get in high-quality bottled water. Yes, you can get fancy filters that might enhance the properties of the water, but they'll still not get it to be the same as good bottled water. The plastic is an issue, and I will admit, I don't yet know how to solve it. You can get water bottled in glass, but drinking 2L of that a day gets seriously expensive. Personally, I've tried water filters for as long as a year, but have gone back to bottled water. The reason is that, since water is the substance which I put the most of in my body every day, I prefer to rest assured I get the highest quality possible. And, unfortunately, in my understanding, this is still bottled water.
This is very good life and financial advice, even if some of the items listed are not applicable in the country I live, is really necessary to hear things like this
Great video as always! My wife and I have an interest in geology, so we have spent quite a bit on “dumb rocks,” but locally found tourmaline and lunar meteorites are way cooler than diamonds.
Brock lotteries are run by the state. Free market gambling like in Vegas actually has better odds than state lotteries. Just thought you should be aware ;) (not that you should do either. Better odds but obviously still in the house's favor)
I'll try and make an argument here as to why I respect the lottery more than the gambling industry. The reason is twofold. Firstly, lottery is run by states, so you could say that the money the state makes from it will go into improving the lives of its citizens. I know it's not always like that in practice, but the money casinos make definitely doesn't go into improving anyone's life other than the casino owners'. Secondly, the Lottery is not really marketed. I'm not sure what it's like in America, but where I am, there's virtually no marketing for the lottery. They're not trying to scam you out of your money with apparent glamour, like the gambling industry does.
@ there is tons of marketing for the lottery. Maybe it depends on where you live but in general marketing for it is pretty common. Way more than for casinos
Tried to explain the wedding thing to my (at the time) finance. Deaf ears. After a good five years of marriage, she admitted I was right. It's now been 25 years and our daughter is approaching marriage age. I'll let Mom take a crack at it this go around. 😅
I own a lot of knives. I have 3 favorites that i use for almost everything. But basically, you need a small paring knife, a chefs knife, a bread knife, a large meat knife if you break down cuts, and steak knives
I like that logic about cars. The amount of money you spent on cars is the same amount you already lost! Thats why i prefer used cars. With good research, think only what you need, do PPI before buying, is a win!
i completely agree with every single point except "Water" and "Wedding"... there are countries/places which don't have access to clean water, you need to buy them... and with wedding, you do not want to go cheap on that... there is either you spend money on your wedding which your wife chose or be ready to get haunted by her taunts for your entire life 🤣... and also natural products (real natural products) might come under grey area... because some natural products can work, some cant
A good knife is not expensive. You genuinely don't need any of those brands. Buy the knives that they use in chain restaurants if you want to save money. It'll probably need to be sharpened more but you can get sharpening systems that are super user friendly. Like the Spyderco Sharpmaker.
Buy less and buy better for certain. I buy clothes that are made well. Wrangler ATG has been really great for good looking good fitting pants in the $50 range. Same with their western jeans 👖 💯
Based Brock McGoff! Some of these had me reconsidering (“natural” grooming products, fitness equipment, water, vehicle) so yeah very eye-opening! Gonna go subscribe to Geologie now :-)
I'm certainly guilty of using storage units. I've been renting apartments and sharing space with roomates for the past seven years there isn't much space to go around.
Designer brand are one of those that ppl need to do research if they want to spend wisely, I have a CanadaGoose and that thing is all I need in below 0 temperature back when I used to stay in Canada. It has the brand name and also the quality, I see people put on 2-3 layers while I only need 1, it was so good that I was sweating at the back so I to unzip during a -10 C weather. For sport cars it is a big man toy basically, if you can spoil yourself without taking 50% away from your bank account then do it.
@@BrockMcGoff I've heard bad things about Canada Goose recently, trying to reduce the amount that their warranty covers and refusing certain repairs, which is pretty unforgivable when you look at the prices they're charging. But that kinda shows their priorities. They've become a fashion brand and realised they can make more as a status symbol rather than a serious performance product.. I'm sure they're good quality, but are they actually any better than other top brands that are charging less than half the price? Plenty of people summit mountains in the Himalayas with jackets a fraction of the cost of Canada Goose, so you're obviously not paying a premium for the performance.
I guess he means 50% after you save for it, and you still have a good income source so you recover from that in not so many years, and that you also have some other valuable assets. If the car is the only good thing you have, you made a mistake
Great video! we're all guilty of one or more of these sins, I guess. There were a few I hadn't thought about, though....keep up the good work, good Sir!
Bro got me on the car one, but you know it’s not a huge difference to me, bro is right about pretty much everything in this video though not sure about the skin care ad though
Neat video Brock! I grew up in the 90s, as well. We only used to get delivery every few weeks on weekends before Uber Eats and all that. The only thing, I am guilty of is buying exercise equipment except, I am probably one of a small percentage that use it regularly. Also, I watched a documentary about De Beers years ago. I found it dark and yet laughable sad how much people are willing to pay for diamonds. The 'natural' products always remind me of that documentary, I watched on pesticide free produce. I remember this bio scientist said, "Pesticide free isn't really, pesticide free. It just means less pesticides."
While I generally agree with everything here, seeing your disapproving look at drinking an energy drink to stay up all night gaming has me all defensive lol. As long as it's not habitual, occasionally saying "fuck it" and setting moderation aside is SO fun. I'm 39 now, but occasionally I will allow myself to devolve into the degenerate goblin my teenage self wanted to be.
I agree, hence why I said I’m also irrational (at the beginning of the video) by buying watches. I will say though, the cheapest car is more expensive than 99% of watches. And most cars don’t hold their value or appreciate (like some watches do). So I don’t think the two categories are totally comparable.
I think this is a good example of adverse selection. I mean most people who watch this video are likely doing what Brock says already. Those who are most likely to benefit from this video are sadly not watching it. Still...thanks for all the reminders of useful advice.
I would add another 2 items to your list, Brock: coffee and film/TV streaming services. I used to work for a coffee company and I was shocked to find out how big the coffee industry is. Most people in the world pay significant money for a drink that is essentially useless. Humanity was just fine for hundreds of thousands of years with no coffee. But now, most of us in the world drink it daily. Coffee is a healthy drink if consumed black and in small quantities, but the coffee industry isn't as big as it is because people drink their coffee black and in small quantities. All the coffee shop culture, the home coffee applicance industry, the million different drinks (different ways to add milk, different types of milk, different ways to foam it, hot, cold etc.) are a perplexing waste of resources, and terrible for your health too, if you use high fat milk, lot of sugar, and drink multiple of these a day. As for film/TV streaming services, need I explain this? Enormous waste of time and money on low quality entertainment.
Perhaps it’s because I’m not American, but broadly speaking, buying lotto tickets seems more correlated to socioeconomic status as opposed to skin colour. The “White” comment was a little…off-putting, we’ll say. Still love you Brock.
A script like this one takes me weeks to research and write. I don’t make things up, and I definitely don’t bring up something like race unless it’s relevant and I have the facts straight. My comments about lotteries in the U.S. aren’t opinions, just well documented facts. My only opinion was that it’s predatory and should be illegal. On a related note, I’d like to encourage an environment where we can talk openly about these things. What do you think? Love you too!
@@BrockMcGoff I agree with you Brock, I hope @ttdan118 will too. I may not be as overly sensitive to the "white" facts on something like this because I am non-white myself.
@@BrockMcGoff No one is doubting the research you do for your videos. You’re awesome, which is why we watch you. And I agree, let’s open the dialogue: I encourage you to say the phrase “I don’t play the lotto because I am educated, wealthy and white” in a room full of educated non-white people and gauge their response. Try it at a dinner party, for example. All I’m saying is that educated, wealthy non-white people don’t play the lotto either. That is also a fact. Oh well…maybe it’s just me…
I read a book called Utopia for Realists that convinced me that big charities with lots of overhead are somewhat scammy (or at least ineffective), but giving cash directly to those who need it is VERY effective. That’s how I try to give now.
I give to local churches or directly. Then they spread it to the community directly or less financially well folks in the church. Though you have to be careful with the church one cus if they're big enough they work like the big charities... You're just paying the private jet money off the head honcho.
don't really think you needed to mention the non-white community thing. the point would've been equally as impactful I used to live in poorer white communities, and the elderly white people do often buy lottery tickets
Ironically the supplements that do work, like the vitamins and creatine, are the cheapest. Because those are not exotic and can't be patented.
I'm not a big supplement fan, but I agree that the legit ones won't come at a premium and that they should stand the test of time.

Forgot cigarettes
Truth! And vapes
where did you get that shirt you are wearing? what make, what type?

I have a friend who had a storage unit for 20+ years and never took or used anything out. $60,000.00 later, he finally let it go.
The things he could have done with $60k…
@BrockMcGoff Don't you know it!
Great advice for season saver and novices alike.
I love it! we are gradually becoming angry old men ranting about new trends and how shit used to be better in the 90s 🤣
Just a correction on the free market point about lotteries... most lotteries are state run. Maybe all of them.
But you can get Lab-grown Diamonds for a fraction of the cost of natural diamonds, and they are EXACTLY identical!
It’s crazy that so many people still buy “authentic” ones 🤯
A good knife is not expensive. You genuinely don't need any of those brands. Buy the knives that they use in chain restaurants if you want to save money. It'll probably need to be sharpened more but you can get sharpening systems that are super user friendly. Like the Spyderco Sharpmaker.
Buy less and buy better for certain. I buy clothes that are made well. Wrangler ATG has been really great for good looking good fitting pants in the $50 range. Same with their western jeans 👖 💯
What top are you wearing?
agree with workout equipment, currently burning time walking on my treadmill watching youtube videos
Based Brock McGoff! Some of these had me reconsidering (“natural” grooming products, fitness equipment, water, vehicle) so yeah very eye-opening! Gonna go subscribe to Geologie now :-)
I fully agree with all these, great list
💯. With supplements, do you mean protein powder too?
Protein makes sense for some people, and it’s time tested. Yes it’s a supplement, but I don’t put it in the same category as cbd oil, etc.
100% grass-fed grass finished beef tallow will work best for skin all over.
You live and learn…but overall these are all good things to know! 💡
Extremely informative and useful!
I'm certainly guilty of using storage units. I've been renting apartments and sharing space with roomates for the past seven years there isn't much space to go around.
That sounds like a good use of the service to me!
I approve all of this. I would add expensive mechanical watches, but I did mention them in passing 😊
Yeah I admitted that in the very beginning 😅
@@BrockMcGoff you did! I wanted to write that YOU mentioned that, but my fingers failed me
All good, thanks for watching!
People look at me crazy when I tell them that the lottery is a scam to keep the poor... poor
Amen on the weeding thing, Brock!
Wait 50%? Did you mean 5?
Canada Goose jackets are incredible. Yes you’re paying for the brand too, but the actual garments are insanely high quality.
@@JoseMiguelLoor yeah that is what I was trying to type into a short sentence.
I can confidently say I don't do any of these. Yet. (Wait until I buy a whole ass airplane)
I love this
Oops, my car is featured in your thumbnail 😬
"no one needs a watch"
Brock...that's blasphemy 😆
I take it back!
Is your typical drugstore 50+ multivitamin considered a supplement?
Multivitamins have mixed research, but most doctors would say that it’s safe and possibly beneficial to take one.
@@BrockMcGoff Agreed. But use brands that independently verify lab claims.
Bold opinins youn man. Iapplaud you for that. I dagree on supplments and agua.
But I get my drinking water from a stand alone water store. 50 cents a gallon right now.
Tea tree oil does work. And fast fashion can last years.
Great video! we're all guilty of one or more of these sins, I guess. There were a few I hadn't thought about, though....keep up the good work, good Sir!
Thank you! Will do!
You left out mechanical watches 😂
Damn! Great video. Agree with every point.
Bro got me on the car one, but you know it’s not a huge difference to me, bro is right about pretty much everything in this video though not sure about the skin care ad though
Hey we all have our vices (looking down at my wrist right now 😂)
Starbucks! Unless you ask my wife. Nice video!
Thanks brother for nice video
Glad you liked it!
Car spending drives me crazy. I'll be driving my used CR-V until it falls apart.
Blind Boxes, ie, future landfill contents.
I love this channel
While I generally agree with everything here, seeing your disapproving look at drinking an energy drink to stay up all night gaming has me all defensive lol.
As long as it's not habitual, occasionally saying "fuck it" and setting moderation aside is SO fun. I'm 39 now, but occasionally I will allow myself to devolve into the degenerate goblin my teenage self wanted to be.
"Everything in moderation, including moderation."
Well dang. I was doing great until you got to energy drinks 😆 I guess everyone has that one thing
Totally agree!
I'm at lot more financially savy than I thought.
#20 Creed or other "niche" fragrances 😏
There is no 1000 dollar gucci bag, Sir. Hahaha. Way above it. waaaaaaaaay
Still on my iPhone 11 .
Cars aren’t just point A to B they are what watches are to you, so don’t criticize
Oh well…maybe it’s just me…
@@ttdan118I wouldn’t say that because correlation ≠ causation, but I do think this would be a really interesting discussion for a dinner party.
Brock it’s Bob 💯
The man, the myth, the karate legend. Oss my friend 🤝
I waste money on protein bars.
The only untrue part of the video is he saying Temu and Shein clothes will last 1 or 2 years. That sh** be falling apart after 2 weeks of use lol
Nicely explained 🙂
Thank you!
BTW Brock get some rest. Bet you did this video at 4am.
I’m lucky if I can sleep through the night without at least one kid related wake up right now m… it’s taking a toll 😵💫
@ I can see that. Be well, my man!
GG KICKS WILL KICK YOU YOU IN THE $$ AND NOT WORTH IT.
Charities are a scam. Spend the money on yourself.
I read a book called Utopia for Realists that convinced me that big charities with lots of overhead are somewhat scammy (or at least ineffective), but giving cash directly to those who need it is VERY effective. That’s how I try to give now.
@BrockMcGoff Yes, to worthwhile individuals.
I give to local churches or directly. Then they spread it to the community directly or less financially well folks in the church.
Though you have to be careful with the church one cus if they're big enough they work like the big charities... You're just paying the private jet money off the head honcho.
@lookingatdaisies9901 That has happened far too many times. So many hucksters with bibles.
Gotta be honest your advice is sound but damn you must be boring as white bread
CUTCO makes the highest quality knives for the homeowner. They are guaranteed forever, and if they ever go dull, they sharpen them for free.
don't really think you needed to mention the non-white community thing. the point would've been equally as impactful
I used to live in poorer white communities, and the elderly white people do often buy lottery tickets
Yeah it’s definitely linked to income as well, and education. But the most vulnerable are in the trifecta of low income / low education / nonwhite.
