PHEV just works, I'm considering the RX450h+ that gets around 40 mile EV range that would be more than enough for daily commute and maybe run the engine once a week.
My 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid was great. It was my first car. Got the SE for $26k U.S. brand new. I didn't have the PHEV, but hybrids can be nice and cheap.
I love my Tonale PHEV. Fast&Furious in D mode, still fast with great mileage in N mode+"manual" (gear shifter in Drive and pushed to the left; still largely automatic...but I can't not use the lovely hockey st...paddly paddles). A joy to drive.
My parents drive a phev and they really save a lot on fuel. They are retired, so the car is really only used to go shopping and they never use the gas engine. That pretty much only happens, when they go for a weekend trip or on vacation. So time wise, the car spends 90%+ as as EV. Distance it's roughly 70% EV Kilometers.
I would love a PHEV for that reason. I drive about 15 miles a day round trip for work and could mostly just use gas for the long road trips. Cost just needs to come way down.
@@dnice362 Plug-in hybrid EV. They have a certain amount of range you can drive using only the electric motor and no fuel, and you can plug them in at home/work to recharge that range.

Yeah but they HAVE to use gas to keep the engine healthy. According to Thomas Toyota said a tank a month for the RAV4 prime, which is 400 miles, or a 100 mile trip a week! That seems excessive.
You hit the nail on the head, PHEVs make so much more sense than full electric. It’s sad that governments and manufacturers didn’t educate people and push them instead.
Hybrid is definitely the best balance in mainstream commuter cars for right now. There's so many EVs carrying, literally, a ton of batteries around that they never use on their 100 mile daily drives and still don't have the anytime-anywhere-ness you get with ICE for long distances.
There should be way more PHEVs. I’ve been saying this for years since many automakers announced their EV intentions. Too many of the manufacturers just skipped right over PHEVs in a lot of segments and went full EV, which doesn’t work (yet) for a lot of people. I say this as an EV owner….it works for me, but only because our main road trip vehicle is gas. I would love a Telluride PHEV - wife could commute every day on electric, but it has the untethered range when we go into the back country.
I traded my 2016 Dodge Challenger SXT w/52k miles for $12.5k to get my 2024 Hornet R/T, which lowered my out the door cost to $39.5k. Without the trade-in, I wouldn't have been able to afford it. I was spending $100 a month on 87-octane fuel with the Chanenger. Even though the Hornet requires 92-octane, I'm only spending $25 dollars a month. Hornet's turbo gets quite hot when running around in "Sport" mode, and I've made it a habit to open the hood when I get home to help cool off the 1.3L.

It would be really nice to do a review of the 24 Volvo plug ins. S60/xc60/s90/xc90, any of them. They have greatly improved them over the years and this is kind of the final send off for that generation. They are super interesting when you sit down and play with them because they are so simple. But it works really well. This coming from a person who rips through new cars every 6 months.
While these do look good, the price is what is going to keep people away. You can get a Stelvio for the same price (if not cheaper when they are trying to get rid of them) for more space and you don't have to worry about all the issues that these have been having (hornet as well). Also with the price the equivalent Hornet makes more sense if you want this vehicle. I do love that color so much though.
Funny about the front license plate holder. I had a 2011 Camaro that didn't have one. Never put a front plate on it and never got any grief over it. I live in BC and we're supposed to have front plates. Drove it for 3 years and the only mention of it was crossing the border into the US.
I haven't run a front plate in... well ever. I've removed the front plate from every car I've ever owned. That said, these guys making a point to complain about it is pretty sad.
What would have been neat is if the Tonale was lower to the ground more like a hot hatchback and functioned as an entry level Alfa Romeo like an Audi A3 fighter. Like you both said actually In the US the math is hard because iirc the pricing between the Tonale and Hornet are fairly close?
Problem with the example with your friend with the RAV4 PHEV is that it’s so much more expensive than the normal hybrid RAV4 that it’s really hard to recover the price difference in petrol savings. And electricity is not free either. We went with the normal RAV4. Another benefit? No plugging in cables all the time.
I had AR Stelvio for a year and could never get used to it’s multimedia, it really seems like the guy who made it was stoned as hell, nothing was even close intuitive. And those brakes, I will never forget how it could change the braking force despite your constant effort on the pedal. And it’s suspension which held you on the fringe of rollover on every single turn. I think suv topic is just kind of new for Italians, but they try 😂 Thanks for reviewing ❤
I had an alfa romeo brera nice car now i have an alpine A110 its borderline criminal that you haven't reviewed it yet, if you come to Madrid i would be pleased to lend it to you
I am 100% with Thomas on PHEV or pure ICE being the only play right now. With charging networks, standards, and battery tech, we are in a transitional phase and things are going to change rapidly. I would not want to have an EV only vehicle right now. I like that you can reserve battery capacity and use it when you want to. For around town, the range is enough for most day to day commuting. I need this in minivan form, then I would have it alongside my Giulia.
Disagree that it's 'the only play right now'. May not be the best choice for everyone, but for many drivers it's already a better option compared to ICE. We went all EV 2 years ago and neither of us ever wants to own an ICE vehicle again. That the tech is still developing rapidly only means that my next EV will be an even better choice relative to ICE.
@@MLHunt It also means that your current car will be absolutely worthless in another generation of battery tech lol. Theres a reason 2013 Tesla Model S are being sold for sub 15k rn.
@@pieswimmer1 I tend to buy cars and keep them until the wheels fall off and the residual value is close to 0 in any case. Most of the depreciation of most cars occurs in the first few years of ownership, so buying a car and getting rid of it after a few years has always seemed like a mug's game to me. So this isn't really a concern for me. The car will only be worthless if I plan to sell it. I plan to keep it until its range has degraded to a point at which it no longer serves my needs, which shouldn't be anytime soon. Why should the improvement in battery tech in new cars impact the utility of a car I own already? I charge at home 90+% of the time and very rarely need to drive >100 miles in a day. So the car I have should serve me well into the future even with some range degradation. Why would I get rid of it as long as it serves my needs, even if newer cars charge faster and go further on a charge? I honestly don't understand people's thinking on this.
I have owned a PHEV, BEV, HEV, and gas-only vehicle in the last year. The PHEV is the most practical by a landslide. BEV has one major downside - but it’s on the way up - charging on the road absolutely sucks, it’s just not ready for most people yet. Charging at home is FANTASTIC though, so if you have the option it’s not a bad one. HEV is still a great choice, great efficiency, affordability, reliability, and power. Gas-only is such a crappy way to be in 2024.
@@FuncleChuck I love my EVs and can't see ever owning a petrol vehicle again, but they still only really work well for people who can charge at home and/or or have relatively low-mileage use cases. For all people complain about the public charging networks though, they've gotten a lot better even in the past couple years since we got ours, and at the current rate of development owning one will be entirely suitable for most Americans.
I like the look of that interior, looks wise, I've never sat in one so I'll take your word for the complexity of the tech and somewhat less premium materials, looks wise alone though it's good both inside and out, it looks 70k even if it doesn't feel it.

the problem with plugins Hybrid is that after the juice runs out you are carrying the same weight while running everything with the smaller engine, since the petrol with be working overtime, whatever you saved in gas for the first 50Km will be null in the next kilometres plus now you have to charge it. Alfa going 100% in 2025 will go down as one of the worst decisions in automotive history. It's an enthusiast brand. As an Alfa owner ('23 Giulia Estrema) I've connected with a ton of other owners, and everyone I have talked to has zero interest in EVs. I know Alfa will find some new buyers by focusing on EVs and crossovers, but I losing that base of enthusiasts will do a lot of damage. And why pay an Alfa premium for a soulless EV when you volume manufacturers will be providing better more reliable cars at lower prices? Once you remove the emotion from Alfa I'm not sure what else the brand will stand on.
Completely agree, Life time Alfa person here, first being a 1970 1750GTV, and I am looking at buying a Giulia QV, the fact they even just announced another SUV, I honestly think the brand is dead already.
@TheRealCatof That's slightly after the upcoming first service point. Ask in a few months how it is going.
What is phev
@@dnice362 Plug-in hybrid EV. They have a certain amount of range you can drive using only the electric motor and no fuel, and you can plug them in at home/work to recharge that range.
@@Shiny_Dragonite eh like the cX90 phev ok got it. We have a CX5 which is actually fantastic and the steering is great, heavy. We need better gas mileage and I think the grand highlander hybrid is top of the list
Yeah but they HAVE to use gas to keep the engine healthy. According to Thomas Toyota said a tank a month for the RAV4 prime, which is 400 miles, or a 100 mile trip a week! That seems excessive.
They need to make a quadrofolio version with that beautiful v6
Honestly, if I were considering buying something like this I would choose this over the Hornet. It looks so much better.
They have basically the same interior.
You hit the nail on the head, PHEVs make so much more sense than full electric. It’s sad that governments and manufacturers didn’t educate people and push them instead.
I love it. I'm buying one.
Hybrid is definitely the best balance in mainstream commuter cars for right now. There's so many EVs carrying, literally, a ton of batteries around that they never use on their 100 mile daily drives and still don't have the anytime-anywhere-ness you get with ICE for long distances.
As someone that used to completely hate hybrids, having a PHEV finally makes sense. Full Electric still needs to much more work to be practical.
Plug in is absolutely the way to go.
I would love a Telluride PHEV - wife could commute every day on electric, but it has the untethered range when we go into the back country.
it's because PHEV makes too much sense. People these days hate logic.
James showing the headroom though 😂😂😂
Coming here from the Maserati review, Alfas are just plain beautiful!
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it 100 times: *The Tonale came first and Dodge made the Hornet as the cheap copy*
@TheRealCatof Ford Explorer is the worst SUV on the market, and I never owned a charger. Stop being a troll.
@TheRealCatof Not knowing the difference doesn't explain why you're a troll? Why do you care what I drive?
@@coastiebrian2024 (s)he's mentally handicapped. Probably a Tesla owner.
Tonale is the name of a mountain in Italy. And it's MITO because of MIlanoTOrino. It's not MAITO, it's MITO. cheers from Italy.
"mito" è chiunque sia riuscito a farsi assumere con una creatività da stivaletti usati. Con tutte le paroli in esistenza, dovevano proprio scegliere un nome proprio, la cui pronuncia sarebbe inevitabilmente stata macellata seduta stante..? Vabbè...
and Veloce it is an adjective and doesn’t mean speed but it means fast, Velocita’ is the word for speed, another Italian in Toronto……
12:10 it is holding on to the gear because it is in manual mode since Thomas changed it for James to use the padel shifters ;)
i literally cant read Tonale without seeing Toenail with a southern drawl
Toe-Nailee
GORLAMI
That's not even the correct way to pronounce it
I agree phev is the way to go great mpg and decent electric range for daily drives for me it just makes so much sense
I completely agree about PHEVs. They make far more sense than EVs, and they should have been the norm (as well as normal hybrids) for many years now.
using plugin for over 2 years, love it
Frankly doesn't seem overpriced given how nuts everything is.
Meant for young folks but costs CA$60k. Makes total sense.
Wagons r king
Wagon > saloon/coupe > suv > running > walking > crossover
While these do look good, the price is what is going to keep people away. You can get a Stelvio for the same price (if not cheaper when they are trying to get rid of them) for more space and you don't have to worry about all the issues that these have been having (hornet as well). Also with the price the equivalent Hornet makes more sense if you want this vehicle. I do love that color so much though.
Only driven the Stelvio but by all accounts it drives better as well.
@@regal842that’s what I’ve heard; if you want an SUV the Stelvio is great. If you want something smaller, the Giulia is also great
Funny about the front license plate holder.
Thomas, stop the fast hand movements, so we can tell which wristwatch you're wearing! 😂 Oh, and a fun & funny review of something I'll never buy.😄
Maybe it doesn't want to shift because you are still in manual mode? I can't really tell.
Love the green and new Alfa styling, but agreed this should be a wagon or hatch!
I still think this shade of green is the best color option for cars on sale right now.
Where i live, there is a Tonale with an identical spec and I have to it’s a good looking car which holds it’s own visually against its competitors
Thomas says smaller, James say smooler
What would have been neat is if the Tonale was lower to the ground more like a hot hatchback and functioned as an entry level Alfa Romeo like an Audi A3 fighter. Like you both said actually
In the US the math is hard because iirc the pricing between the Tonale and Hornet are fairly close?
I think suv topic is just kind of new for Italians, but they try 😂
Thanks for reviewing ❤
I had an alfa romeo brera nice car now i have an alpine A110 its borderline criminal that you haven't reviewed it yet, if you come to Madrid i would be pleased to lend it to you
Tonale isn't an Hornet, Hornet is a Tonale: if you can't see the difference, it's your problem
the license plate says "green vehicle" and i feel like thats pretty apt 😂😂
Lol
I like the look of that interior, looks wise, I've never sat in one so I'll take your word for the complexity of the tech and somewhat less premium materials, looks wise alone though it's good both inside and out, it looks 70k even if it doesn't feel it.
ignore them. I spent the weekend driving one (the Hornet version) cross-state. It's at least as comfortable as my wife's $80k Mercedes SUV, handles better, and gets much better gas mileage. It was the first time I spent so many hours driving and actually enjoyed it.
“I want a CX-5 but I have too much money and I like the idea of filling up with gas less”
“Say no more”
In Romania we have tonale mild nybrid 1.5 gas engine with 160 HP; very nice car, but with discount from 42000 is now around 34000 euro!!!! So i think 34000 euro is a good price for a compact SUV
Same in Austria roughly
The Honda cry was soo close to doing something great as far as hybrid and plug in and synergy of fun and economy, Honda should’ve kept evolving thst
I love your videos but even for a quick review a bit more serious information about the spec of the card would have been nice.
Why? This is one of those joke cars. You're not going to buy one, I'm certainly not going to buy one. Nobody is going to buy one.
Lower the suspension, and the Q4 engine (lose the PHEV) and all of a sudden its the best hot hatch
Nice new Pelagos FXD on the wrist there btw
I sometimes make "Extra Throttle House Quick Reviews" "Extra Throttle House Extra Quick Reviews" by playing them at 1.25x speed.
I can't be the only one that calls it a "Me-toe" rather than a "My-toe".
And you’re right, since MiTo is short for MilanoTorino.
just saw one om the road accually has more road present than i thought
The concept is best suited for European market. Waiting to see what they are going to do with the Guilia and the Stelvio
Automated subtitles wrote „this is the toenail“. Quite the chuckle for me
Come on guys, we all know Canadian dollars are worth the same as Fallout bottle caps
Yay another video
The rear facing camera is struggling in this video. The noise is atrocious despite what should be ample amounts of light for a modern camera. The other cameras don't seem to be having as much trouble.
On that note I'd love to see a behind the scenes episode where you go over the technical details of how you shoot and edit your videos.
the problem with plugins Hybrid is that after the juice runs out you are carrying the same weight while running everything with the smaller engine, since the petrol with be working overtime, whatever you saved in gas for the first 50Km will be null in the next kilometres plus now you have to charge it. Regular Hybrid like Prius is i think better til we figure out this EV craziness
I live on the outskirts of a reasonably sized city in the middle of The UK; I have never seen one of these on the road, in the wild.
If you could get this color with the Hornet, it would be the green hornet?
The way he kept using the paddle shifters took me out 🤣🤣
These things qualify for the $7500 EV credit in the US if you lease one.
My friend told me one time when we were joking about the reliability of Alfas, regarding the Guilia Troglafolgliolgiloglio that someone wrote in a forum were people were talking about how unreliable the Gulia was, "I've had over 1800 trouble free miles!"
Like how you mangled the foglio bit😂
Nobody cares
Actually todays Alfas are not more or less reliable than its european competitors and you can find bad forum posts about every car. Besides of that i dont think that a forum is a reliable source.
I'm driving PHEV Tonale as a loaner. It seems it has no overtaking power. Does it need to be in dynamic with a fully charged battery to have that power?
In that category it’s probably the one I’d take- although needing a 3 row SUV- I’m not a buyer in that category.
That said I did nearly bite the bullet on a used Stelvio QV, and was willing to give up extra space in back.
Full electric has its place. But for most people, a hybrid is probably the best choice. If you have a garage to charge in, a PHEV is probably best.
The endinga are always the best lol 😂😂😂
looks nice
Everyone is saying, the used car market this crazy... people I know, recently bought a fully loaded, one-year-old used BMW 530e xDrive Touring for less than the Tonale's sticker price in Europe... PHEVs make sense depending on your drive profile, but don't take the first year depreciation!
11:00 It's call the Mini Cooper Plugman, or Plugsport.
It’s a good looking SUV, maybe Alfa will come out with the Tonale Quadrifoglio.
Alfa looks nice. Could do with sports seats. Less arm chair and gadgets.
Couldn’t agree more- killing the brand
Completely agree, Life time Alfa person here, first being a 1970 1750GTV, and I am looking at buying a Giulia QV, the fact they even just announced another SUV, I honestly think the brand is dead already. Think of that, they killed the MiTo, the Guiletta, and now make one Sedan, and 3.. FKN 3!!! SUVS. How in any way shape or form is that an enthusiast brand??
@@NotSean269 100%. What they should be doing is doubling down and updating the Giorgio platform, throwing the Hurricane I6 into a new Giulia and openly going after BMW, Audi and Mercedes in the sport sedan segment. They need to be more aggressive. Who would buy a 4 cylinder C43 over an updated Giulia? Or a 330i over the Giulia 2.0T?
I love how the license plate says that this is a "green" vehicle. Green indeed!
All of the pain of owning an Alfa with absolutely none of the benefits
Chevy volt, in summer 93 km on ev, winter get around 60km on ev and then of course the engine which is like 60 bucks to fill up
damn in Italy it's like 38k euros, didn't know in north america was that marked up
I actually think the design looked like alfa, and then dodge just rebadged it. Whenever i see the jotnet it looks like they took the tonale and slapped a didge bumper on it
I’d rather get a new Prius
Well it looks like it has decent ground clearance for slightly deeper snow. That's all I can say that's positive.
