I'm a professional editor and I always try to learn and draw inspiration from high end editors, but all I find are crazy tutorials about insane flashy effects and complicated shots. It's incredible to find a master that shows and teaches that just with a few cuts and subtle movements you can go a long way, and that's real mastery of the medium and just the inspiration I was looking for. good job!
@@JordanOrme Yes! I'm still learning myself and I hate how overrated those flashy effects are, while no one seems to talk about how simple things like cuts and keyframes can have a huge impact on your videos. Thank you for this! ^_^
@@JordanOrme Been watching your videos while I'm transcoding this commercial project. I also want to say how refreshing it is to see a tutorial like this. Also the video where you just showed us your project folder template. That's so helpful for other ppl to see who want to work in the industry. I see so many youtube editors who throw everything in their project with no organization and toss all their media into a sequence and edit that way. Just makes me cringe.
Actuallly a very simple edit that anyone can do with a free software at home, too. Sometimes less is more. I have never been a fan of too flashy videos. I love it when I am able to understand the shot that I am seeing, cause we let it enought time to breath in and than just harsh cuts. Love it. This is more my style.
Speaking of some typical kpop mv effects as you mentioned, I somehow always thought that those recent pop mv seems to have been influenced by kpop music videos, especially those recent Justin's MVs and I was right. I'm glad that more and more prodessionals engaging with American Entertainment industry recognize and respect korean video & media effects and morden skills. Hope there would be some sort of collaboration between people like you and editors or directors in SK to be happened in the future. Excuse me if my expresstion in English doesnt sound make sense or if there is any grammatical mistake in this comment my english isn't perfect. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips for your great work.
YES! THIS! I completely agree. I have so much respect for Korean artists and how they have revolutionized music videos and us Americans have so much to learn from them!
It's in the middle of the night but I've just been binge-watching your channel, you're so so sooo freaking amazing, also learned a lot !! thank u so much
As someone who has been editing for 10 years I can literally feel your heart through the screen sighing and saying "yup this video was not challenging enough" "But the simpletons wanted what they wanted so Here ya go" lol
Literally learned so much from this video more than spending 31235778 days watching 25 min tutorials on youtube. So glad this channel was recommended. Thank you!
this is so interesting, honestly just fell in love with your videos! i’ve always found directing such an interesting thing to learn about because it influences the viewing experience so massively yet i often don’t realize all the decisions that have been made for the end result to look the way it does. just subscribed and am going to watch all your videos byee
this type of breakdowns are extremely helpful! this channel provides exellent value with dope sense of humour! Btw, Justin's "Company" music video is also edited interestingly, if it was your work we'll be glad to learn :)
IM SO GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL!! i've been into editing videos since i found out windows movie maker was a thing (LOL) around age 10, and over the years have taught myself a lot and picked up on a lot on my own. video editing and tricks can be taught, but it definitely can come as an instinct to an extent (where jump cuts go best, fitting to the music, the feel of the film, the creative side of working with your shots, etc). i love filming too, and so cinematography is something i also enjoy (and i see you giving input on both on your channel which i LOVE)! watching your break downs/reactions has opened my eyes to things i've never seen or realized, but also showed me stuff i've used in the past myself due to what i've picked up/viewed from videos over the years! also as a fan of kpop, it's cool seeing those influences as well. watching your break down is giving me so much more editing insight so THANK YOU!
I graduated my post grad in documentary filmmaking a year ago and I found editing to be my weakest skill. It took the longest out of the entire process and I had a lot of room for improvement. But, you make editing very easy to understand and breakdown the process in such an enjoyable way. It’s obvious that you love what you do. I’ve learned a lot from you, so thank you for teaching.
You're great!! Love how you interest in learning things from music video like kpop. I like to watch your reaction video so much!!! (sry for my poor english)
this is absolute gold, especially graduating film school soon and trying to brush up on techniques that aren't just complex vfx tutorials, but the psychology of why one makes the cuts or the slight simple effective adjustments to the footage.
Hey Jordan, thank you so much for your efforts, this was great! On another video, the Taylor Swift Out of the Woods one, you said that it was the purpose of a video editor to relay the feelings of the artist to the audience. That comment made me want to know more about what it's like to do what you do. Can you please do a day in the life of a video editor??
I came across your videos in my recommendations and I'm glad I did! My career goal is to become a video editor so it's interesting to see how a professional edits a video. I find the editing process so fascinating!
I loved that you shared the dancers' energy with us at the end. Some of the best stuff happens when they are just playing off of eachother. You mentioned that you used one of the "whip shots" that happened when the cameraman was moving his camera after getting a specific shot. Do they also provide you with intentionally shot video of fast, or slow, movements around the set...... or do you just grab the moments yourself?
Good question! I usually just grab them myself. If I was directing, however, I would intentionally shoot those because I know I like to use them when I edit :)
Hi. I don't know if you'll be able to see this but I have only started watching some of your videos today and I have edited videos (but just clips from my favorite artists and requirements for school activities) and I didn't actually get how music videos work or what's the story behind since I'm really slow in getting it lol but you seriously made me think that every music video has its own meaning or why it was created like that. Plus, you're really funny and it certainly looks like you're teaching me in a fun way. I'm not really that good yet with editing since I've only discovered it as my passion before I entered college. Sadly, I didn't get the program that I want. But you inspire me to widen my capabilities and learn more about editing!! Thank you for sharing us these types of videos 😊 I will surely learn a lot!
I'm currently studing to be a camara man and editor, and sound editor haha in Spain. I love to watch these videos of yours to see if I am actually doing correct my editing and reaffirming my studies 😊😁

how much of the motion in the choreo shots are key frames vs shot that way? like are you making only slight adjustments to motion shots, or were they originally still shots that you're completely controlling the motion? the dynamic is incredible.

Opposite! First I edit the video, then we send it to the colorist, then they send it back to me for the final export!
Wait... So the one who edits the video is different from someone who colors the video???
